Detroit Lions shake up the roster, sending David Montgomery to the Houston Texans and releasing Graham Glasgow, signaling a bold new direction for Brad Holmes’ front office. Is Jahmyr Gibbs ready to become the true workhorse, and will Juice Scruggs be more than just a depth piece? Matt Dery unpacks the motivations behind the Montgomery trade, discusses the emotional farewells, and questions whether the running back room is now Gibbs’ to dominate.
Key topics include possible James Connor reunion talks, how Sione Vaki’s development impacts the Lions’ backfield, and what cutting ties with Glasgow means for the offensive line’s future. Mock Draft Monday spotlights edge rusher Cashius Howell as a new target, while Matt Dery examines remaining cap space, further roster moves, and the franchise’s aggressive free agency approach. Can these strategic gambles power the Detroit Lions through a pivotal offseason? #firstlisten

big 50 today, into a Tuesday, March the 3rd, what a busy day in a Lions country.
I didn't say Lions Nation, don't you hate that?
Why did everything become a nation, Red Sox Nation, Cubs Nation, Jets Nation, Islander
Nation?
Okay.
No.
But a busy day, down at 222 still is Rodwood Drive, David Montgomery, gone, Graham Glasgow
is out.
There are running backs now available to take Montgomery's place.
We got a lot to do today on a Monday Lockdown Lions.
We also have a mock draft Monday, which we got to get back to today, which we will do
at the end of the program.
Lockdown Lions today brought to you by Fandall.

We are on TikTok, we are on Instagram and everything else.
Yes, the juice, shrugs, era has begun here in Detroit.
I never thought I would be saying that I would never thought I'd be saying on a Monday
with one week until free agency.
I would never think that I'd bring up the name Lakin Tomlinson ever again on this show.
But juice, shrugs shared the left guard spot this year in Houston with Lakin Tomlinson.
And now juice, shrugs is a member of the Lions because first and foremost today, as I was
boarding an airplane coming back from vacation, always happens when you set foot on a plane.
The Detroit Lions trade David Montgomery to the Houston Texans for a fourth round pick,
a seventh round pick, and 26 year old offensive lineman, juice, shrugs, all of that haul
for a 29 year old running back.
Now first and foremost, I love David Montgomery.
I want to David Montgomery to stay.
If you listen to this podcast, if you watch locked on Lions the last few weeks, we've been
doing the show for 10 years.
What do I always bring you here on locked on Lions opinions, facts, fun, great guests.
I love Jeff Risen, formerly of the Lions wire.
Now at Detroit Lions podcast tomorrow to talk all things combined.
But one thing I've been very adamant about the last few weeks is that you've got good
players on your team.
You want to keep those good players here.
But David Montgomery did not want to be here.
All right, let's get that out there.
David Montgomery said all the right things.
David Montgomery did all the right things.
His Instagram post today, talking about how much he loved Detroit.
How he grew up here, Lions will be in his blood for the rest of all these cool things.
It pulls it hard strings.
It does because the Lions have been getting good for the last four years, and he's been
a big part of it, and he signed an extension we didn't have to a few years ago.
He wanted to stay and he put on his best smiley face and his and his best attitude and he
went to radio row at the Super Bowl and said all nice things about the Lions.
But let's be honest here, he didn't want to be here anymore.
He just didn't.
He wanted and some of that, some of that, I'm not going to blame it on him.
I think he handled it well to just have the right tone and sell the right things, and
he did talk to Drew Petsing, but it was a roller coaster the last few months for him.
First of all, he put out some cryptic Instagram posts during the season when he wasn't getting
the rock.
All right.
Now, he never complained publicly, never said Jameer Gibbs should be on the bench and I
should be on the field, never said that.
He and Jameer have an unbelievable relationship.
You saw his broken hearted tweet today and you saw Amin Rassem Brown put stuff up.
David Montgomery was a beast, but he wanted to play.
He wants time and you're not going to get time when you've got arguably the best running
back in football as their number one guy.
Brad Holmes at the combine was on with Tom Pellacero from NFL Network, or maybe it was the rich
eyes in interview and was like, Jameer Gibbs is, he's the key to our offense.
He's what makes us go.
So if that's the case and Montgomery wants to go somewhere, probably somewhere good and
he's going somewhere good in Houston, it's good team.
And seemingly when that AFC South every year, they need a running back Joe Mixen sat
out all last year.
They had Woody marks.
But the Texans sent a pretty good haul for the Lions.
This was a trade for both teams.
This was a good trade for Houston and Detroit.
Texans need a leader, Texans need a running back bell cow, a horse, and that's what Montgomery
is.
The Lions get back to draft picks and a guy in Scruggs that might be able to play and
help.
He's not the starting center for these people that are writing and I'm not going to name
names.
Oh, the Lions got a starting center candidate and juice Scruggs.
If juice Scruggs were any good, he'd be the Texans starting center.
Their own line is dog crap.
But a depth piece who's been a bust since he came out of Penn State was probably drafted
to I in the second round.
He hasn't played well.
Look at his PFF grades are not good.
All right, his best year was two years ago when he played center mostly, but he's not
been very good.
We're not just handing them the starting job because he was in the David Montgomery
trade.
He'll be a depth piece and a rotational piece of garden center.
No one's handing him the job, but he's in the last year of his contract and the Lions
are taking a flyer on him.
So by the way, they saved four million dollars in cap space by trading a running back
who's 29 years old, who's owed what 15, 16 million dollars next two years, including
I think nine million next year.
I don't like it because I love David Montgomery and I'm a fan, but I understand it completely.
I get what Brad Holmes is doing and Brad Holmes twice right after the season and at the
Combine last week said, we like David, but Brad didn't want to say it, but it's obvious
that the agent and Monty said, look, can you send me somewhere I can play?
And don't send me to the Jets or the Browns, please.
It sounds like these two sides worked it out.
My gumries, you know, puts out an unbelievable Instagram post about how much he loved it here
and what Detroit meant to him and what it was to, and that that's, I love that stuff.
All right, I'm sentimental Lions, Lions have been climbing now for the last three, four
years.
They've had really good seasons.
This pasture was nine and eight and sucked for all of us, right?
It just did, but for nine wins to 12 wins to 15, David Montgomery was a big part of it,
but I'm sorry.
He, if he didn't want to be here, he's got to go.
And there are going to be plenty of running backs out there.
And oh, by the way, first one on the list is Cione Vocky, Brad Holmes.
You drafted him in the fourth round and traded up to get him at one 32.
We got to see what he could do now.
And I know there's going to be people said, yeah, but he's a converted safety and that
was in college.
He has been on the Lions for two years.
We have not seen much in terms of Kenny, Carrie, the rock in a football game because Jameer
Gibbs is going to get dinged up.
That just how it works.
And he's going to have to go to the sideline.
There's going to be somebody else standing behind or next to Jared golf.
So hey, hey, Vocky town.
Let's see it.
One of those, one of those mid round Bradholm trade-up picks.
Let's see if one of them can pan out because we know plenty of others and in Hooker,
Roderick Martin, Gio Manu, have been clunkers.
Vocky is an excellent special teamer.
A guy that picks up the offense and if you watch him in the preseason and I did, picks
up Blitz as he can really block.
Now he's going to get an opportunity.
But there are other options, which we will discuss coming up.
But to see Montgomery go just sucks because he was a part of something cool here.
This reminds me when Jamal Williams was let go.
Everybody went, you can't get rid of Jamal Williams.
He cried on TV.
He cried in Green Bay.
That's our guy.
And the Lions went, hmm, we're going to let Jamal Williams walk and go get David Montgomery
instead and spend about the same amount of money.
And that's what they did.
And it was a shrewd move by Brad Holmes.
It was a great move.
But this is business.
All right.
I'm a fan just like you guys.
I don't want to see David Montgomery go.
But it's pretty obvious.
Well, he didn't say it publicly.
He wanted to play and I got news free and I'm going to say one more thing.
What an effing disaster.
John Morton was his offensive coordinator.
What a disservice he did to this team and to this offense and to David Montgomery this
season.
What a disaster.
Look, you're going to have bad moves.
It's going to happen.
All right.
The Eagles had the two bad coordinators of one year and fired them both, including Matt
Patricia and said, we got to wash our hands of this.
God, John Morton killed this offense at times.
Not all the time.
Lions still have a good offense.
Still have good players.
But man, Montgomery was rolling, playing with Gibbs.
And I get it.
Gibbs has gotten better over here.
So it's going to be difficult to keep them both appeased.
But the John Morton era.
And the eight or nine weeks that he called plays holy hell because David Montgomery was
pissed.
And even after Morton wasn't the OC or wasn't the play caller, it didn't get me better
this year.
All right.
What could this running back room look like?
We could we see a reunion between Drew Petsy and one of his guys.
We will get into that coming up next right here.
I locked on lunch.
And as we told you before, locked on lines today brought to you by a fan duel college

went into Bloomington, won and cut one and covered.
What's up with my Hoosiers?

And you'll get one month free of our every day or club go there right now.
All right, so David Montgomery's gone.
What are the lines going to do in terms of a backup running back?
You know, Sione Vocky is not a known commodity is a spec good special team.
He's been in the league two years, but can he tote the rock in Jameer Gibbs's absence
when they need him to we don't know that yet.
This draft for running backs is buns.
It's cheeks.
It's terrible.
Not a good draft for running back.
So the lines are thinking, oh, we just got some extra picks, we've got a couple of
fourth rounders now.
We got an extra fifth rounder now, a couple of two seventh rounders.
You know, maybe they could take a running back and that's possible.
Do you take a running back in the seventh round?
You never know.
Isaiah Pacheco late round guy, you know, you can get running backs late, but there is an
option in free agency and he could be signed right now.
James Connor was let loose today by the Arizona Cardinals in a cap relief move.
James Connor, of course, is a guy that has started, whether it was Pittsburgh, whether
it was Arizona and is a pretty good running back.
He played four lines off as a coordinator at the time Cardinals office coordinator drew
Petsing for the last three years.
So a James Connor reunion, if Connor is willing to be the second back and doesn't want
to be the every three down guy, I think it would be a great fit.
And again, sometimes what the NFL turns into is, is buddy ball and the buddy system.
But keep an eye on James Connor, again, free agency starts a week from today, but Connor
now is out in the open market because he was released.
But unrestricted free agency, a week from today, this show is going to be buzzing.
You imagine if I get on here and go, man, we got Linda bomb.
I don't think that's happening, but you never know.
That's a week from today, but keep an eye on James Connor ties with Petsing if he's willing
to be Jameer Gibbs's backup.
And I'm sorry, not get the kind of carries that he's got in the last few years.
But if he wants to win, he just came from an organization that is notoriously bad in Arizona.
I'd love to see that James Connor opportunity for sure.
Joe Mixin would be interesting too, because I think the Texans are letting him go.
After he sat out all last year, now that they got David Montgomery, I just don't know.
I think Joe Mixin probably feels like, hey, I lost my job.
Because of injury.
I was in a thousand out of Russia two years ago, and it'll want to be a starter somewhere.
But keep an eye on somebody like Connor, and we'll talk more about it tomorrow with
Jeff Ristin too, in terms of what might be a fit for the Lions with free agent running
backs.
And somebody that you can get as a backup, as Nick Chubb will need to be a backup and
plan a winner.
And is he healthy enough?
We'll see.
All right, Lions cleared a ton of cap space today.
This is not a surprise to anybody.
They created over five and a half million in cap space by releasing, and they announced
it offensive lineman Graham Glasgow, the team starter at center last year.
Just did not play well.
All right, the last two years have not been good for him.
He admitted after two years ago, the 2024 season that he didn't like playing left guard.
He didn't feel like he played well, and he didn't.
Lions moving to center this past year, with Frank Ragnows retirement, and Glasgow was
not good.
He just wasn't.
He said to make six and a half million this year, this was an easy call for the Lions.
They free up four million with Montgomery being traded, and they create five and a half
million in cap space by letting Graham Glasgow go.
Again, now, do the Lions move, take Rattledge to center?
Do they draft a guard move, Rattledge to center?
Do they just draft a center?
Do they sign a center in free agency?
Juice Scruggs could be in the mix.
I'm not sure he's a starter, but at least be a part of the competition at center.
Glasgow 33 years old, we'll see what he decides to do.
He did put out this message on his Twitter feed today, quote, I'm grateful for the seven
years.
I've spent as a Detroit lion.
I'm thankful for the great teammates, coaches and friends.
I had along the way.
I love this city and the fans that have supported me for the better part of a decade.
There truly was no place I would have rather been.
Whether the times were good or bad, I'm proud of the time I was able to spend here.
Detroit and being a lion has had a huge impact on making me into a man I am today.
This is a lot of what David Montgomery said, too.
Because of that, it will always hold a special place in my heart.
I wish the Lions, especially my former teammates, nothing but the best.
I will always be a fan of the guys where I took the field with, will always be a fan
of the team that changed my life.
Thank you.
End quote from Graham Glasgow today.
Look, this guy gave the Lions a lot of good years.
He did.
He did.
Last two years, haven't been good, but great teammate, great guy in the locker room, leader and
a veteran presence that this team needed over the last few years.
And never complained, whether it was right guard, left guard center, never said a word, played
through a lot of injuries.
He was banged up last year, but the performance just wasn't there.
And you've got to be strong up front.
Look what the Lions do over the Lions doing well two years ago, three years ago, pounding
people.
And it started with number 77 at center.
Ragnar was a monster and they tried to replace them last year with Glasgow and it just didn't
work.
So we're going to see more of this.
We're going to see more guys not brought back.
There's a report today that Tyrus Wheat, the edge rusher will not be offered a contract
by the Lions.
That'll free up a little bit of money.
There could be others that are that could be cap casualties to get the Lions to where
they want to be from a cap standpoint, a week from today, restructuring golf, restructuring
Penaisule, restructuring St. Brown, all of that will take place in the next week.
So that the Lions can go out and be shoppers a week from today.
Wow, what an exciting.
It's a crazy time around the league.
No question about it.
No, no doubt about it.
All right.
Coming up next, we got to do mock draft Monday.
Our buddy Trevor Sikima at PFF has a post combined mock and a name at 17 for the Lions that
I've not heard mocked to Detroit before.
We'll do that to coming up next right here on Lockdown Lions.

I got to give a quick shout out to my guy, Jake.
Read more of the host of the Lockdown Lions Squad Show that a live show earlier today.
Check that out as well, Jake filled in for me on Thursday and Friday.
As I was on a little vacay, but I'm back now and I'm going to be with you for a while.
I mean, this next week is going to be crazy with what Brad Holmes and the Lions decide
to do in free agency, picking up guys like I said before that may have been let go.
It's going to be a free for all the next week.
So stick with us right here on Lockdown Lions.
It is time for mock draft Monday.
We're going to be doing this every Monday leading you up until the draft in late April.
Today's is the post-combine edition courtesy of our friend Trevor Sikima at Profit
Paul Focus.
Here is his top five, Raiders at one, Fernando Mendoza, Jets at two, Arvel Reese, Cardinals
at three, the Big Taco Francis, Maui Goa, Titans at four, take sunny styles, the awesome
linebacker from Ohio State, and at number five, the Giants, Carnell Tate.
So three buck eyes in the first five picks, Reese styles and Tate, my God, that's crazy.
At six years, the Browns taking Monroe Freeling, who I would love for the Lions, but man, doesn't
look like he'll be there at 17.
All right.
So Trevor Sikima at 17, four year Honolulu Blue and Silver Gladiers has the Lions taking
an edge rusher from Texas A&M, Cassius Howell.
Trevor writes, quote, Howell had a bit of an up and down week at the combine.
His arm length was verified as one of the shortest of any edge rushers since 1999.
He then placed in the 40th percentile in the broad and vertical jumps and the 80th percentile
in his 40 yard dash and the 10 yard split before tweaking his hamstring during on field drills.
And why are we taking at 17, Trevor?
Regardless, Howell was one of the top pass rushers in college football of the past three
seasons bringing a tenacious and relentless rush style and would pair nicely with Aiden
Hutchinson and quote, interesting pick for the Lions.
I've not seen Cassius Howell as somebody that has been mocked to the Lions before at 17.
But again, that fills a need for Detroit with an edge rusher.
He also comes from the SEC, which we know Brad Holmes loves.
Everybody has Caden McDonald, the big nose tackle from Ohio State going 25 to the Bears.
It's like everybody has them mocking him to Chicago at 25.
That's a kid that I would keep an eye on.
I would.
And with this terran Arnold situation, I know Jake touched up on it on Friday and again,
he hasn't been arrested and this is his name was mentioned by police and it's not a good
scene.
We'll see what goes on.
But could there be, could the Lions be in the market for a guy like Avion Terrell, the
corner back from Clemson at 17.
Now Mezzador in this mock goes 15 to Tampa and Spencer Fano, the big tackle from Utah
goes 14 to Baltimore.
Interesting.
We'll have to have Trevor on soon to talk more about Howell and we'll ask Jeff Risen
about him as well tomorrow on the show.
It's very early.
What if the Lions bring back, you know, Alkadine Mohammed and sign another edge rusher or make
a trade for Max Crosby or something like that.
That would change how these mocks go.
But for the first time in a while, we're seeing a lot of different names for Detroit.
We're seeing offensive linings.
We're seeing edge rushers.
We're seeing defensive linings.
We've seen some corners.
It's intriguing to say the least.
All right, Jeff Risen was in in anapolis.
Combine was over the weekend and last week we get his thoughts on it.
Jeff of course wrote for the LionsWire and LionsWire.com for a long time.
He's now Detroit Lions podcast, writes for the site, also hosts their shows.
He will join us tomorrow on this very program.
But a big day today, David Montgomery gone, Graham Glasgow out, more to come.
All right, I don't think the only lines are making as big a moves as they made today all
in one day.
But I think we're going to see some other guy shipped out and some fresh faces in.
This week as they create some cap space and everything else.
So stick with us right here on Lockdown Lines.
We appreciate you all making us your first list and checking us out wherever you get
your podcasts.
And again, every day is we appreciate all of you for being with us as well.
