Hour 4: Silver & JD wrap up Thursday's show by reacting to the breaking news that the 49ers and Dre Greenlaw have agreed to a reunion on a 1-year, $7.5 million contract. Simultaneously, 49ers defensive lineman Bryce Huff has announced his retirement at the age of 27 on social media. How much football does Greenlaw have left in the tank? The guys discuss it all to close out the show.

Fixed flight tray goes down.
Three pay has two-time outs left.
But the 49ers have the football.
34 seconds to go in this game.
Two-interceptions for big,
play,
tray, greenlaw.
Remember for that eight-game stretch,
when Jordan Love randomly turned into a future Hall of Famer.
And then we were witnessing it happen at Levi's Stadium.
And then luckily, he kind of struggled the final 17-18 minutes of that one
through a couple of interceptions.
And I can still hear Greg Papa in my head.
Get down, Dre, greenlaw.
If you missed it,
49ers are bringing back big play,
Dre, one year seven and a half million dollars.
IJD, I'll say this.
As for what he's got left,
in terms of his body, how broken down it is,
that is very much to be determined.
He was released by the Denver Broncos.
But in hindsight of the last couple of seasons,
it did work out pretty well in the sense
that you didn't have to pay Dre,
greenlaw last year,
even though they definitely wanted him back.
Kyle Sandhan and John Lynch got on a plane,
flew all the way to Texas to meet up with him.
He goes to Denver.
Now you're signing him on a much cheaper deal.
And so I don't look at it as like the ultimate solution.
You want D-Winters to continue to grow.
You're going to have more depth at that position.
See if Nick Martin can give you anything.
But at the price of seven and a half million,
I don't hate it for a guy that's part of a winning culture
for a guy who is rightfully earned the nickname big play, Dre.
The question just becomes,
what does he have left on his body?
Yeah, and if I just asked you to guess,
how old do you think Dre, Greenlaw is?
I did this own exercise, and I'll just admit,
I would have thought he was 31.
But how old do you think, again, you may know,
so that would defeat the purpose of this
because you looked it up.
But how old do you think Dre, Greenlaw is?
Is he going into his age 28 season?
He's 28 now, and we'll be 29 coming up,
coming up in, I think in May.
I was looking at it during the break.
So he'll basically be 29 for this season.
So he's, and I said that to Walter,
and I mean, Walter didn't say anything offensive,
but he said, I'll be kind to Walter.
Well, do you want to say what you,
do you want to say what you said to me?
I'll let you, I'll let you kind of jump in.
I'm bro, you're on the chopping block.
What did he have the bottom, his body type?
Well, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll let you say however you want to say.
It wasn't bad.
It wasn't offensive, but I'll just let you say it.
I don't want to out you may have the body type of a 40-year-old.
It is all I'm saying.
Okay, okay.
Exactly.
I go, I go, I go, Walter, he's only 28.
Yeah, he's only 28 going to be 29,
and well, he's got the body of a 40-year-old.
Then again, you know how much I love Cavan Looney.
That guy was my favorite 39-year-old at age 26.
To that point, it does,
it does come down to, look, I think this is a depth play,
and not necessarily, hey, we're bringing Drake Greenlaw back
to be, you know, the starter next to Fred Warner,
you know, the primary starter next to Fred Warner.
I just think they're trying to get a bunch of bodies
that they like into the mix there,
in addition to some of the bodies that they already,
already have, and obviously he fits the vibes.
Him and Fred Warner, you know, love playing together.
The question is, again, how much can he realistically provide?
But I just look at the nine-year linebacker room right now.
You've got Warner and Winters.
You now add Drake Greenlaw back to the mix.
You brought back Garrett Wallow,
who the 49ers really liked and played well in, you know,
the limited opportunities he got in the playoffs.
You still have Tatum Bethune.
You still have Nick Martin.
You still have Luke Gifford, who's a special teamer,
so you can take Luke Gifford out of needing to basically play
the linebacker spot,
unless it's in an emergency type situation.
I guess Gifford's a free agent.
I guess Gifford is a free agent.
He's a free agent right now, yeah.
Yeah, he's a free agent right now, actually.
So maybe he winds up being somebody that you'd like to bring him back
for special team's purposes to be sure.
So, yeah, you've got those names,
and then other free agents, Curtis Robinson and Eric Kendrick's,
for the 49ers.
So it's interesting.
We'll have to see how things play out there,
but you add a guy that you know if he's healthy
can really fit extremely well in your system.
And then you also still have a couple of young guys,
that, you know, couple three young guys
that maybe you're trying to develop there.
So I like it from that standpoint.
And then if Drake proves that he can play and hold up,
then you've got a player there.
Then it becomes, I think, a big deal.
If he doesn't, I think you've still got other options
that at least for now would, would at least pencil
to be ahead of him on the depth chart.
Are they digging themselves right back
into the calling coward hole?
I mean, we did play the audio yesterday.
Coward talking about, oh, the 49ers kind of remind me
of the warriors are trying to keep the band together there,
opting to go a little bit older.
And I know that one year, seven and a half million dollars
isn't some large ransom by the standards of the NFL
and the salary cap and everything.
But I do think that, you know,
Evans was an older signing that I for one totally love.
I think it's fair as much as I love Drake Greenlock.
And look, when he's on the field, if he can be productive,
like, I have no doubt if Drake Greenlock is able to suit up
that he can be a highly productive
and energetic player.
Remember how awesome he was in that one half late in the 2024 season
when the Rams came into town and it was the Thursday night game.
That was all before he had to take himself out of the game
and then there was the Devon Ray Campbell fiasco
because Drake Greenlock wasn't there and everything.
He was awesome in that game.
I have no doubt that if he's able to suit up,
he can be a productive player.
But while we talk about Mike Evans and the big question being,
well, how many games going to give you?
How many snaps going to give you?
Well, it's right, Greenlock.
It's just like how much really does he have left in the tank?
And is this a move where you feel like it's more of an nostalgia play than anything else?
Yeah, no, it feels like more than just an nostalgia play.
I will say that.
By the way, and shout out to our buddy Matt Lively
for noticing this first and others kind of picking up on it.
Now, Bryce Huff apparently announced his retirement on Instagram.
Like did a video announcing that he's stepping away
and retiring at 27 at this point.
And he's going to be 28 coming up here.
I think this would have been his 28 year.
But yeah, Bryce Huff announcing his retirement.
And that's somebody that I think that I understand him still under contract.
I'm checking for another year.
No, I think he was for another year.
I believe he is under contract for another year.
So we'll see if that sticks.
But yeah, Bryce Huff, at least for the time being announcing he's retiring on his Instagram.
So I know you probably know the answer to this one.
We were just talking about age and playing the age game.
Do you know how old Bryce Huff is at the time he is deciding to retire?
The 27.
27 years old?
Yeah, wow.
That was pretty crazy when you think about it.
But yeah, under contract through 2026
after the trade that brought him over from Philadelphia,
he had signed a three year deal with the Eagles going back to 24.
So 24, 25, 26.
And he was set to have a cap hit with the Niners at about 5.4,
a little under 5.4 million dollars for this season.
So I think the Niners really liked having him around if this proves to be true,
which there's no reason to believe at this point that it wouldn't be
since it's coming directly from him.
But as long as that proves to be true,
that's another area where I think the Niners are already looking for another guy
that could rush the passer.
I think they really are going to be looking for another guy
that can rush the passer, maybe in the draft.
And I think now maybe that becomes a need in free agency
or potentially via the trade market.
Well, earlier in the show, I read off, you know, in hindsight of the trade
of Osa Odigizua, this was the 49ers defensive line room.
This is what I gave you at the beginning.
I said, edge wise, you got Nick Bosa, Samo Kuwano, Bryce Huff.
Now Huff is obviously retired.
Then the more in the hybrid slot, Michael Williams key on white.
And then you got Odigizua Alfred Collins and CJ West.
And so even with that information at the value it was coming into today,
I thought, okay, I would like to see another edge.
I would like to see another defensive tackle.
And then maybe we're thinking of a solid 10.
Now I'd like to see a couple more edges.
As we sort of pivot over the next month to the NFL draft,
while I'm not yet focusing on specific names,
all of a sudden does this increase the need and maybe the desire
to go and get the best available edge at 27.
I know that front offices don't always think that way.
In the sense of, well, we're going to get an edge no matter what.
But I'm thinking, okay, you did give up a draft pick.
You have another hole to fill.
What do you do in terms of filling out your edge rushers?
Yeah, I think I would not put that at the top of my list for necessarily.
I think wide receiver is where they really have to go.
It's wide receiver and edge.
I think some combination of wide receiver and edge,
now that they were able to get OSA in there for the interior defensive line.
So I think those are the two things.
I don't think it necessarily has to be first and second round picks,
specifically there.
And I think maybe you find somebody that's an edge that you like that can be a
situational guy with one of those fourth round picks.
Like I think you can take a flyer on somebody that you think is high motor
and can maybe make an impact.
I think you're just too far down at 27 to say, for me,
you're going to get the best edge available there.
I think you need to feel it out.
I would be inclined at this point still to say
that you need wide receiver above all and a deeper wide receiver draft
to where I think you can still get somebody pretty good at 27.
I would say wide receiver first round.
If I'm looking at it in that vein and then second round,
you kind of go by feel maybe you go edge at that point.
And then that leaves you with a bunch of flexibility at different positions
toward the middle of the draft where you have those those four fourth round picks
currently at your disposal.
All right, 808 KMBR.
Wow.
In some ways, this is even a busier end of our show than we had during the first day
of the free agency frenzy.
Dre Greenlock coming back to the 49ers on a one year seven point five million dollar
deal.
And then at the age of 27,
Bryce Huff has announced that he is retiring from the NFL per his Instagram account.
We'll continue to dive into all of this and take your right up to two o'clock.
Walter, stop body shaming the 40 year old.
It's pop and silver on these sports later.

This is Papa and Silver on KNBR.
The Sports Leader.
Born down, here's your game.
Here's Russell Wilson back.
Wilson throws cut.
Hallister's get on the goal line and drop by Drake Reed Law.
He is short.
Forty-Nighters come away with the ball.
The Forty-Nighters have stopped Hallister on the goal line.
The Forty-Nighters are going to win the game.
The Dre Green Law.
Big play, Dre.
And better late than never, by the way.
In honor of Papa, let's go Buffalo or not.
Next Thursday, week from tonight, 7 pm.
You can celebrate V&M's heritage.
As the sharks take on the Buffalo Sabers,
give Walter a call right now at 415-896-KNBR-415-896-5627.
Dial it up, be lucky, call number 10,
and you have a chance to win right now.
All right, JD, about 23 minutes to go.
We got trash talk in the WBC.
We've got the Warriors trying to figure out
how to survive even longer without Steph Curry.
And we got the Forty-Nighters continuing to make additions.
Bryce Huff a loss due to retirement.
Now, Dre coming back here for a one-year,
$7.5 million deal.
Not to go down like the very dark moment,
but just as an aside, for Dre Green Law and what he meant
to the 49ers when they made their Super Bowl runs
and the one in 2023, just from a football fan,
not even working for the Niners flagship,
not even having the interest in them catching
or capturing Lombardi number six.
Dre Green lost 20 killies the way it happened,
the timing, the moment, the stakes, all that.
That was one of my least favorite moments of being a football fan
that I can remember in my lifetime.
It's just devastating.
It was devastating being in Allegiance Stadium
when it went down during the Super Bowl.
I mean, to think of everything that he had been through
as you laid out and being one of those players,
it was a part of both of those teams in 2019
and that season in 2023 that were able to get to the Super Bowl.
And he was among the group of players
that were the heart and soul of both of those teams.
And again, a handful of players between Kittle
and obviously Warner and Dre Green Law
that were a part of both teams.
And so it's notable, obviously,
just how heartfelt everything was to have it happen
and have it be something that obviously hurt the 49ers in that game,
but also hurt the 49ers with the void
of not having Dre Green Law
able to come back and play at a meaningful level
other than the one game in 2024.
Or yeah, 2022 season.
Anyway, KNBR, we are sorting through all of the news of the day.
So it started with Osa de Gizua and the trade.
Then we played a lot of audio from Mike Evans
and he put out there, I believe they are one piece away.
And I am that piece we got into that.
I talked about if you even see that as false
or maybe even borderline delusional,
it doesn't really matter because some athletes earn it
in Mike Evans certainly is one of them.
And now we've got another addition to the line backing room.
Ultimately, where he Morris is going to have a lot of pieces to plug and play.
And when you evaluate this defense and what it is,
we know Nick's coming back and it's another ACL,
but it was a clean tear.
We have Fred Warner coming back
and he was pretty close to doing so in the post season,
which earlier you deemed as maybe a blessing in disguise.
And then you've got a bunch of young players
who either haven't quite gotten their shot.
Like what really is Nick Martin at the NFL level
or it's guys that we've seen play a lot.
And we're trying to evaluate if there's a long term fit here for this defense.
If we're talking about someone like a Malik Mustafa,
Marquis Siegel got thrown into the fire at the start of the season.
And then again, in the post season,
D winters looked like one version of himself certainly alongside Fred Warner.
Then he had to do it the hard way without Fred.
Michael Williams, same deal.
He was playing alongside Nick Bosa.
Then he had to do it a lot by himself.
And then he went down.
So there still is a lot of youth even though the focus
with this team and you look at the roster is always going to be the age and the proven players.
Now it's kind of important where some of these younger guys can come along.
And you'd have to hope that the addition of green law at the very least
can give a little extra something to someone like D winters or Nick Martin
or any of these younger pieces that they might even be drafting here in the coming month.
Yeah, I'm curious.
I would not put the 49ers to me that the signing
of of dry green law would put the 49ers out of looking to draft a linebacker.
Now, maybe I'm wrong on that.
But I just looking at, you know, they bring back wallow.
We got into it a little bit in the last segment.
We'll see what happens with with Luke Gifford, who's who's a free agent.
But I just look at Warner and Winters.
And now you have green law and you still have Bethune and Martin.
You know, I also think and wallow and and so and they really like wallow.
So I look at that and I go, man, that is, I mean, what is that?
One, two green laws in there.
Three, Bethune's four.
You still have Martin and wallow.
I mean, that's six linebackers right there.
And so, you know, how many are you going to carry?
And so I think there's, you know, I almost look at them as having maybe, you know,
being full at that position or maybe depending upon others that wind up in the mix
and training camp having, you know, one, one too many or maybe, you know,
maybe you're going to have to look to make a move as far as, you know,
your 50, 53 man roster and all of that.
So I think it's going to be interesting to see, you know, it, I also think it
lessons the potential, you know, on paper,
immediately for Bethune and Martin to play a lot.
So again, something to monitor, it's kind of a tell there that maybe they don't want
those guys to be able or to have to play a lot.
Obviously, Bethune, a seventh round pick, Martin, a third round pick going back to,
to 2000 and 25.
Well, Bethune's a young player and he certainly had some great moments like the
wearing the Fred Warner's number 48 before Sunday night football,
before the Atlanta Falcons came into town.
That was a really nice showing for Tatum Bethune after they had lost Fred Warner and kind of
helped get the nine or season back on track.
And then there were also times where Bethune showed some severe growing pains.
And I do remember by the end of the season,
Papa was kind of advocating for Eric Kendrick's as he was a late signing to come in.
And I think during the Philly game, when we came back, we talked about Kendrick's
in a wallow and obviously those were two unlikely heroes of that game.
But I'm not trying to label Tatum Bethune as being someone that can't have a long-term future.
But I think it was one of those instances where due to some of the sudden injuries and then
departure like a green law in that last offseason, he's someone that got thrown into the fire
a little bit to where you're thinking, I don't really know if he's the kind of player that has
the ability to help them compete right this moment. Now an extra offseason should help
ideally a little bit more depth that these positions should help. But yeah,
Bethune is a little bit more of a question mark. And that's a, you're rightfully bringing up
that point where maybe green law coming in, maybe alter some of the playing time for these
other young guys that we've seen little snippets of. All right. What are the other areas for you
then that are of the utmost? Because I think I think linebackers out right now and we've talked
about wide receiver, we've talked about edge. Is it safety? I know a lot of people are out there
screaming at their phone, screaming at their at the YouTube channel, screaming at their radio,
if maybe they're they're driving around saying offensive line, offensive line, offensive line.
I don't necessarily think that diners are of that belief and we'll see what happens with
Trent Williams, but, but where do you kind of go next if you're the 49ers? I wouldn't say that
my opinion of where the 49ers need to address and fill holes has necessarily changed throughout
the day. Defense of line, you still can never have enough bodies. In fact, with Huffs retirement,
I would say edge rusher is even higher on the list. I still think you need another wide receiver
to put alongside Evans and Pierce all and then the other young guys that are looking to make that
leap. Offensive tackle, I will put on the list because I'll say it again, you need to figure out
a plan for life after Trent Williams and I don't think that the depth pieces you got like Viderium
low are necessarily the answer for that right now. And then tight end is one that I'm intrigued by.
It's not an immediate need. George Kittle will come back at some point in the season and you did
lock down Tom just a little bit more, but to get another athletic and maybe more of a past
catching type of tight end, that's one that intrigues me within a Kyle Shanahan offense. I know
leading up to the draft last year. Papa and I talked a lot about Tyler Warren who started the
year really strong with the Colts and then had some illness and the Colts kind of collapsed as
a whole to go from eight and two to eight and nine in the end, but that's a position that is
of interest. Safety is another as well, but I think that could be solved more so in the draft
then what's left out there on free agency. So I would like to see them use maybe one of those
fourth round compensatory picks on someone they feel like they can get good value out there.
I know I just listed off a lot of the short answer of it is I don't know if today's news necessarily
changes a whole lot of my priorities in terms of the holes that the Niners need to fill.
Yeah, wipes out linebacker, but I didn't think linebacker was necessarily a whole at least not
in not at the level that that edge or wide receiver still continues to be. I think if I had to go
another place beyond that I would say safety or secondary help overall that need you know maybe
still veteran. I mean it just in the mix what happens with Renardo green again I'm of the belief
that they should not trade Trent Williams that would create another hole and I think set this
entire offseason potentially back and almost tell your you know show your hand as to what you have
to do in the draft if you if you look to do that. So I think that would be an incredibly
bad idea, but yeah as I sort of look at it I think the 49ers should be looking I would be looking
at the safety room I think at this point and you know whether it's the draft or even even again
in in free agency as an area in which you can you can look to to shake things up a little bit with
a little bit more of a veteran presence in addition to some of the youth that you that you already
have and I think your corner is interesting too to me because there have been the the Renardo
green reports they like up to stout Lenore is still quality as your your number one and a guy
that that you've paid but then I think you know what what if if it's not going to be Renardo and
they're indicating that you know maybe they're by putting them in the trade rumors maybe they're
they're you know trying to lie a little bit of a fire under him or maybe they're looking to move
on if you're looking to move on you need another starting caliber outside corner I don't think
you're handing that over to Derelle Luder at this point so we shall see and then you know chase
Lucas if he hasn't did chase Lucas end up signing already I know he was
reported to be negotiating with somebody and I guess he hasn't signed already and he's a
restricted for agent I believe yes he is a restricted for agents so Matt Barrows had the list
just a moment to go so the 49ers for agents leaving Kendrick born Jordan Elliott sky more Robert
Beale went to the dolphins and then still available oh he said it's just a partial list for now so
chase Lucas would be on that as a restricted for agent you got to Juan Jennings the two guards
Spencer Berford Ben Barch Thomas more said Kalea Davis Yeter Gross Matos and then just to clarify as
we confused ourselves a little bit earlier Luke Gifford is still an available for agent
yeah and one that I think they would want to bring back and he would be another linebacker again
not one that you actually want to have to play linebacker but somebody that you want
as a as a special teams ace and the the 49ers revamped and highly improved special teams unit
of 2025 you want to keep those guys around that that helped flip the script and you know Skymore
it was another sneaky tough loss I thought with him going to Green Bay Skymore played well
for the Niners and you know didn't it started off a little shaky but you know by once he got
rolling you felt pretty confident in Skymore in the in the return game and so that was an area
where the 49ers you know one that you wouldn't anticipate being an area of high performance
considering where things have been throughout the years but he kind of made it that way so I'm
curious where the Niners end up going obviously you don't want to overpay for a kick and punt
returner but you know he is somebody that that did perform perform pretty well all right we'll
get ready to wrap it up when we come on back final thoughts on the day I do have one note to share
with the world baseball classic and by the way that game will be on Fox tomorrow because you know
we love our channels no to be for Logan Webb on Friday night and then we'll get ready to hand it
over to dirty work it is Papa and silver JD hanging out with us on the sports leader
Papa and silver now continues life from the KNB arc casino matrix progressive jackpot studios
casino matrix progressive jackpotter here where are you just drop in please play responsibly one
eight hundred gambler all right final few minutes here JD silver and Walter with you congratulations
to our contest winner Mike in Walnut Creek and Mike's got a birthday coming up next week happy
early birthday go enjoy a little shark sabers and if you haven't won yet we still got one more
opportunity for you coming down to it tomorrow all right JD so the 49ers continue to make some moves
in there the warriors are getting some time off before they got quite a gauntlet ahead in their
schedule and they'll have to keep doing this without Steph Curry and then the giants continue
at spring training Harrison Baylor was back in the lineup today after his time playing for
Israel at the WBC Logan Webb big one tomorrow against Canada if there's one thing that February
march has brought us it's our USA Canada rivalries the old staple of the in-between football baseball season
yeah I think you could make the case the way this this shook out it's a it's a it's a good matchup
for for the United States is they get their reprieve from being eliminated after the the gaff
from Mark Derosa not knowing that they had already clinched their spot we can all take a deep breath
and allow the the country to relax a little bit on on Derosa you know all that Derosa's real
crime was you know what is real crime was it was underestimating team Italy they're insane I
load us team totally now they they won yeah they won every game and and we'll see if if those two
wind up you know matched up again in in the round you know the in the rounds that that follow here
I haven't I had the bracket here I'm looking at the bracket so where would it be I guess
would have to be in the final if they're gonna if they're gonna meet each other so yeah USA Canada
and then Korea and South Korea and the Dominican Republic are gonna play so the US would have to play
Canada and then beat them and then and then it'll be a tough one between Korea and the Dominican
Republic in the semi finals but this thing's gonna come this thing's gonna happen quick games
Friday and Saturday Sunday and and Monday and it's gonna be over here on on Tuesday so the next
five days are are going to determine the outcome of this thing all right great show today all
around appreciate it and I got to say with web getting said to pitch tomorrow because I know that
you and I will talk at least next week on the air this will be our last show of the week together
because we'll have Kruegen Grant Brisbane had this note about Logan Webb and why he actually likes
the why Brisbane I'm saying likes the timing of the WBC because Webb is someone that yes it's
important to get your body ready and ramped up but what he kind of wants to see out of him is
Webb pitching with some adrenaline that's the kind of stuff that you're looking for in the ace and
this is gonna be a big one for him tomorrow that I'm certainly intrigued I'm gonna get into this
whole knockout round and as far as baseball in the WBC having a little bit more intensity and at
times patty-ness like Randy Rosarana Cal Raleigh and Vinnie Pasquantino after his three bomb night
saying hey team USA you're welcome we were thinking of you guys you know it kind of does take me
back to when Tony Vitelo was like we want to be an uncomfortable spot for people in the situation
and obviously in order to be uncomfortable you have to be successful enough to to be an uncomfortable
spot on the schedule but I kind of like to see a little bit of attitude it makes me think like
the difference between regular season baseball and postseason baseball or any baseball with high
stakes that ramps up pretty big when you compare it across other sports so I'm looking forward to
watching Webb do it with the adrenaline yeah I think it's gonna be good I think it that is the
number one thing in terms of being happy that the United States was able to advance is that does
give Logan Webb an opportunity to pitch with with some stakes which is always a good thing and it's
just it's just fun for for the viewer as well tomorrow I will say that the WBC hooked me with
the the Dominican Republic Venezuela game hooked me I think the the US hanging on the brink kind
of hooked me I wasn't into the pool play as much as maybe others were but I'm full blown in now
on the on the quarter finals as they start it was to be wasn't it it was to be that really hooked
in the end it was to be it's always to be big thank you to JD have a great weekend I will check out
some dubs OT for you and we'll catch up next week yeah looking forward to it dubs OT tomorrow we
get just dubs Saturday and then back to back dubs OT's on Sunday and Monday appreciate everybody
