I'm John Williams.
He's Jay Smith, and on today's show, we got a big recruiting weekend coming up this
weekend.
Not next weekend, not the weekend before last, this weekend, it's future freaks weekend.
It's a junior day featuring members of the 2027 recruiting class and a lot of big time
prospects.
And guys that they're targeting coming into town, we're going to talk to Athlon's SEC power
rankings, where the Oklahoma Sooners land, and maybe why they're not getting enough respect.
But let's talk about this, Jay, because over at CBS Sports, they came out with a list
of budding stars for the 2026 season, and your guy, David Stone made the list.
Yeah, there's one that doesn't surprise me.
He's the one that everyone's been talking about over the last, I say last six months, especially
throughout the season.
Last six years.
Well, yeah, last six years, yeah, in general, but the, it's really ramped up as far as
draft wise has been like really these last six months, but you're 100% right.
They've been talking about Stone since he was at IMG Academy.
We knew that he was, he had the potential of being a game breaker, a game changing player.
And he's done a fantastic job on the run, defense today.
He's getting better at his pursuit on pass.
And truth be told, he is a, he's potential day one first round pick talent.
And air, I believe it.
I mean, that's why he was a five star.
That's why he was one of those five star pluses.
Everybody had him as a five star and it's a top defense of tackle in his class.
And he's starting to live up to it.
And so now I love seeing the CBS has given that announcement because we expected that, right?
Like I was talking about this not so long ago over on my channel and fair sports on if
Oklahoma was to look at a 2027 kid, Jalen Brewster who's the number one detacled in the class.
If Oklahoma decided like at the end of the season that they're going to jump in that sweepstakes,
back to me would be an indication that David Stone to it to the league.
And that's their expectation is that he's going to be pro because, you know, why pay for
a guy like that?
If you get Stone back one more year with Jayden Jackson and the, the plethora of guys
you got behind, because if you're bringing a five star of that caliber, you expect
him to play immediately.
Stone has developed himself into not only the reputation of being a beast, like I said
on the interior, but someone that they expect to continue to rise up over the next few
months.
Yeah.
So he played really, really well as a rotational defensive tackle this past year.
You know, the sack numbers aren't going to impress anybody one and a half sacks, but
the dude put up a ton of pressures and he was living in the backfield on a number of
occasions.
The sky was just really, really impressive for the Oklahoma sooners.
And there's a reason why you're excited about what he can be with a full time role as
a starter.
You know, he was fourth on the team in total pressures.
While being Rosia in pass rush snaps, he, oh, he was first in pass rush snaps, fourth
on the team in total pressures.
And he was up on the list in stops, according to profile focus number third, number three
in stops, while being number actually finished the season number one amongst defensive tackles
in snaps last year.
So like, this was a player that kind of had a really good season, but it flew under the
radar because Grayson, Halton was great.
Taylor wine was great.
Army St. Thomas was great.
Kendall Daniels was great.
Like, they had so many impressive defensive performances and David Stone.
Yes, the sack number sack numbers were not there, but he was impacting the passing game
every single time he was on the field.
His pressure numbers were ridiculous and he's only going to continue to get better.
The more he's in Oklahoma strength and conditioning program, the more he just matures and ages,
he's going to continue to get better and better.
And so what he's got coming up in 2026 is going to be an even better season than what we
saw this last year.
It has a chance to put himself on the map as one of the best, if not the best defensive tackles
in college football.
Yeah, exactly.
And we all kind of expected that out of him.
And, but yeah, he's the, like you said, the numbers don't jump off the page of the quote
don't quote actual stats, right, the ones that count.
But yeah, he said those pressures teams were watching for stone.
They were looking for him specifically, honestly, there were situations where, and that's
kind of why I said that at the beginning of the season, where I kind of thought Jane Jackson
had an opportunity to lead the team in sacks.
And at one point, he was one of the leaders in it.
And it was mainly because I knew that people were going to watch Armason.
They're going to keep their eyes on dominant.
They were really eyeballing Grayson Halton after what he did last in 2024.
And stones emergence.
I was like, okay, Jay's going to probably be able to sneak in there.
They knew who Jay Jackson was, but they, a lot of people assumed his, his focal point was
really being a run stuffer, being a space eater.
And then he was starting to get those sacks and they were like, oh crap, we got to stop
him now.
So it's going to be a pinching him instead is that they keep switching who they have to
go after.
And that's a great problem to have for Oklahoma going for it.
So I think Brent Venables is definitely taking advantage of that with the way that he does
his stunts and the way he switches up the pressures.
But I expect David Stone to be an all-American issue.
Like it's all American a bust to me in my personal opinion.
Yeah.
And at this point, I'm just kind of hoping that they figure out a way to convince him to
come back for 2027 that you get one more year out of him.
Hey, they found a way with Armason Thomas, right?
They found a way with Kip Lewis, maybe fingers crossed.
I'm not going to cross my fingers.
I'm not.
I'm not going to put it outside the room in possibility for Jim Nagy and his staff Brent
Venables Todd Bates to convince David Stone.
Hey, one more year.
Just give me one more year, my guy.
If he's projected day one, that man's gone.
I would be pissed if he came back as a projected day one to come back here.
Take your butt on, man.
We got a new quarterback.
We starting over.
Get your butt out of here and go make your monies, right?
I need you to I need you to ball out this year.
I won't be mad at him if he goes to the league.
I'll totally understand it.
I'm just hoping, man.
I'll get you.
It's spring.
Hope springs eternal right now.
So that's where I'm at.
I mean, I always want guys to come back.
Come back one more year.
Like that's one more.
That's always my hope until you're 35 until you're 35.
If you're 90 years in the league or ninth year in college football,
maybe don't come back one more year.
If you're trying to get a chance,
it's definitely don't come back one more year.
Go to the NFL.
You need to go play against the pros.
You're too good for college as it is.
Well, I don't know why you're spending one more year in college football.
Aside from David Stone, though, Jay,
who do you think is somebody else that could be a budding star or a rising star this year?
Man.
So it kind of makes me want to look on the opposite side of the ball because I mean,
it feels like the defense wise,
we've really established who a lot of those players are.
And because of that, it's kind of it's kind of tough like lying back or wise
nest is still one of my list, but I don't know.
Like I need to see.
He hasn't given me a season like Stone did where you got to start to see.
Oh, kind of the trajectories there offensively.
I mean, you've already got two young running backs.
I was like, I mean, his play like just going to break out again.
And he's kind of done that.
It him into a thousand yards wouldn't shock anybody because you've seen the talent.
But I do think it that why receiver room though.
I kind of feel like this is that many choice allies your time.
It's time.
It's one of them.
You take it.
Sure.
Stop playing games.
It's yours.
You know, lock in and do that.
Because right now we're looking for a fifth wide receiver.
Number five is up for grabs.
Because if I'm going to be honest,
I've been thinking about this like crazy and we'll do another preview on the spring ball.
Because I think that'll be fun, of course, with the positions once again.
But I'm starting to lean.
I think your micro card might be a third wide receiver at Parker Livingstone being the guy
that rotates in a fourth.
It's starting to feel that way.
And it's I think it's mainly because of what we saw at the end of season from your Michael.
If he continues to grow in space and play in the flow of the offense.
Problem.
Problem.
That could be your breakout star offensively.
You know, if he's if he's getting more snaps than Parker Livingstone.
Again, Livingstone's so young still.
He's got three years of eligibility left.
He's a guy that you can continue to build your offense around down the road.
If you feel like your micro card just has a better grasp of the offense throughout the spring
and throughout summer and fall, then hey, there's a good chance that you could see that.
You're going to play four wide receivers at least.
But I think you're right.
Elijah Thomas or Emmanuel choice need to kind of they don't have to have a thousand yard
a year for us to be excited about their future.
But if they come out and they put up 250, 350 yards, a couple touchdowns.
They prove that they can be relied upon in some big game situations to spell the starters.
That's an intriguing idea of potential for those guys looking forward.
You know, because you're going to lose trail Harris and Isaiah satania after this year.
What is Andrew Michael Carter?
What does wider receiver look like going into 2027?
That's going to be kind of a big question mark.
But I think there's a lot of potential there and a lot of guys to be excited about for sure.
Alright, coming up, we're going to discuss what Apple on sports thinks of the Oklahoma Sooners
and their SEC power rankings heading into the spring here on Lockdown Sooners.

You know, match how you see the slate playing out of what not like I'm looking at some of the games that's coming up.
You got like Missouri playing against Arkansas coming up.
And that's one, you know, look at Arkansas is a favorite right now at Missouri.
But that conference tournament is coming very, very soon.

All right, Jay.
The Oklahoma Sooners coming at number five in app on sports SEC power rankings.
Coming in behind.
The familiar faces.
Your Georgia Bulldogs at number one.
Texas Longhorns to Texas A&M at three and the LSU Tigers at four.
Oh, that's awful.
I'm kind of curious as to well, I kind of understand the.
I would have expected Alabama to still be higher.
They played in a conversation.
Yeah.
Right.
Now they are changing quarterbacks.
We're seeing a lot of shifting of the guard.
And the squad's only returning with five starters with a lot of defensive players.
They hit the portal or whatnot that you thought we're going to start.
But they got some of the players that they have very high upside on.
But I thought that was interesting to see that they had Bama so down there at seven.
So almost middle of the pack with Ole Miss right behind us.
Qon Lacey is a beast.
And you're that shameless.
Like how do you like overlook those two and make them sit there at the bottom?
I wouldn't have personally, but I digress LSU.
I'm not sold on yet.
No.
At all.
I mean, I let adding Levitt and Jordan Seaton.
Yeah, those are pretty big pickups.
I need to see what the rest of the line looks like.
Like LSU's line has not been very good the last few years.
Like we thought they were.
They had three dudes drafted in NFL draft and that line was still not that good.
So there's questions I have around LSU.
Glad we don't play him this year.
Also, how healthy is Sam Levin?
Yeah.
I want to talk to he's not going to be available for spring ball.
So how prepped is he going to be for the fall?
That is another question, especially with new players, new teammates,
new environment, new all of that stuff.
You know, a lot of begging was done by Lane Kiffin to get him there.
He's not ready to play yet.
Make sure a little nervous there.
Of course, Texas is all the way at the top.
You know, their line is improved.
They think we'll see.
They had a lot of players in and out.
And I think we were playing.
And they kicked out the entire wide receiver room out to get Cam Coleman.
One player may be able to do something.
I don't know.
It's both strategy cotton.
Yeah, very often.
I see if it pays off.
This is exactly it.
But yeah, Georgia deserves be number one on this list to me.
That's the one you don't overlook.
But I think five is a very good spot for Oklahoma.
And all we got to do is leverage the fact that we had so many people coming back.
It's execute forward.
Yeah.
And I think you could even argue that they might be the third best team going into 2026.
Could be.
Yes, Texas A&M had a better record than Oklahoma did.
But look at the strength of their schedule.
The big games they played.
It was a bit of a struggle to beat Notre Dame.
And it was a big time struggle against Texas.
Then they only scored three points against Miami in the playoff.
Like, exactly.
Is that teams the number three team?
And they lost Casey conception.
I got questions about Texas A&M.
We discussed it yesterday.
I have questions about Marcel Reed's decision making.
I think he developed as a passer.
I just still think there's questions in big moments with the guy.
I think he's capable.
He's more than capable of putting up big numbers, bigs, you know, touchdown numbers,
running the football, leading an offense that scores a lot of points.
But can he come through in the key moments?
Can he avoid some kind of boneheaded decisions at certain times?
Can he do that?
I mean, I get the same questions about John Matier,
but I think they upgraded their talent so much around John Matier
that the offense is going to be significantly better.
We talked about that yesterday too.
But I think yeah, anywhere from three to five feels right.
With the old missing.
Yes, Trinidad channels is coming back.
He won laces coming back.
But they lost some key players on that defense the side of the ball.
Who mind me?
I'm going to LSU.
That's a big loss for them.
Are they going to be able to rush the passer as well?
Is that a defense that can take a step forward that?
I mean, it was a defense.
It was okay.
It wasn't good.
It wasn't great.
It was good at times.
It made key stops at times.
But yeah, it was good enough.
But will it be good enough this year?
That's where I kind of have questions with them.
And then yeah, to me, it's it's Georgia until Georgia stops making
the SEC championship game and winning it like almost every year.
I'm not going to pick anybody other than Georgia to be number one.
Me either that.
Until they stop winning exit stop winning conference championships.
Then I can definitely say I'm not picking them.
And well, you know, once we go beat them between the hedges,
then at that point, I can actually say, you know, maybe Oklahoma has a chance
to see them at the conference.
You know, in the conference championship game.
But overall, yeah, I don't I don't see a reason why anybody should pick
against Georgia for the foreseeable future.
All right.
Looking at teams nine through 16 J that's Florida, Tennessee.
Miss Florida, Tennessee, Missouri, Auburn, Mississippi state,
Vandy, Kentucky and Arkansas.
Do you think that there's a team in that group that could make a push
to be one of the top five teams in the SEC next year?
Oh, man at the bottom.
Because that's kind of what Oklahoma did, right?
Oklahoma was kind of projected in that eight to 10 11 range.
And they were ended up as one of the top five teams in the SEC in 2025.
I actually think that Tennessee may end up back up there.
Okay.
Because hype was done a really good job overall.
They just need to get them another runner.
And I think I do like the hire of Jim Nose at the great hire.
That was a fantastic hire for what he's trying to achieve.
Will he be as good as Banks was two years ago when the defense was just
out with like James Pearson all of them?
I don't know.
But I think he'll be able to use those players better in comparison to what Banks did.
And I think Jim Nose will be able to fill the cupboard up a lot better in comparison.
So I think that's a good one.
I think Tennessee is one that probably can.
I'm also a little biased.
I like high school.
Yeah, I like high school too.
And he's been consistent.
I mean, he's had nine 10 win teams.
Most every season that he's been at Tennessee.
There might be one year.
I'm not looking at the year by year records right now.
But there might be one year where that wasn't the case.
But, you know, he's been really good.
Every, you know, most years, it's just a matter of can they get enough wins to get to that 10 win season and make the playoff.
And they did it with Nico Yanleave.
If they can do it with Nico, they can do it with, you know, Mac.
That was a year that they had that.
They had a great defense.
So if Nose can, like you said, like Nose can do it.
Nose can get them back to that.
And there's a possibility.
All right.
So I'm looking at it now.
He's gone 7 and 6, 11 and 2, 9 and 4, 10 and 3, 8 and 5.
So last four years, anywhere from eight wins to 11 wins.
So could they bounce back with the first year quarterback?
They were able to have some success at different times with different quarterback.
So he's got, I got proof of concept a little bit.
But a lot of it depends on the schedule and how other teams around them on the schedule are, are looking that year.
Florida is one of those teams that's kind of intriguing to me.
Simply because John Summerall, he's just a good coach.
Could he create some upsets in places where maybe they're not expecting them to win?
Now, they've got a tough schedule.
They do every single year because they're not in conference.
Can they be good enough in year one?
I don't know if they'll be right there.
But if they are to go like six and two in SEC play, they'll be in the top five of the SEC.
Just may not have enough wins to make the playoffs.
So yeah, fascinating.
Any love for Vanderbilt to stay kind of in the mix in the top six, seven.
I need to see what Jared Curtis looks like in his first year because he's most likely going to win the starting job.
I don't, I got to need, I need to go look at Vanderbilt's depth chart, which has actually my plan here as spring ball happens.
Really dig into the SEC and see who's who's going to be what with the depth charts going to look like.
But I'm expecting Jared Curtis to start.
And if that's the case, I don't trust no freshman is starting quarterback.
And it's nothing to get to him.
It's I've never trusted a freshman quarterback as the starter.
He's just the games the game, man.
Yeah, he can be tricked.
But that defense is still going to be good because Clark Lee has been cooking in that capacity.
Yeah, let true freshman quarterbacks surprise you.
Don't go in with any expectations.
Just like, hey, it's a learning year.
We're going to go through some growing pains.
If we get some good games out of him, great.
But let's just build on whatever you do hand that ball ball.
And speaking of Austin Simmons at Missouri, like if he can have a consistently good year, that run game is good enough.
And the defense has been pretty solid.
A lot of these years that they could potentially be one of those teams that surprises a little bit.
I know, man, in the last two days, we've given a little bit too much love to Missouri.
So maybe next week we're going to have to throw a little bit of shade on Eli Drinkwitz and the Tigers.
Just they're getting too comfortable up there in Columbia.
So we might have to talk a little bit about that.
But coming up next, it's future freaks weekend.

It's going to be fun of future freaks is one of my favorite ones is the junior day so you get all of the supposed to be juniors you have some sophomores that populate and sometimes the freshmen to pop pull up but they but those it sounds like rumor has it a massive list of juniors are going to be pulling up and players that this one is going to be after of course you're committed to be there the expectation is at least 12 of the 14 commits will be in town on the Cooper Whitten has been logged as having a visit on March 2nd.
So he may not come back possibly he does he may actually decide that or he may go you know well he's committed so he doubt he goes anywhere else but yeah he'll he has a potential of showing up but we'll see right what type of capacity is actually trying to visit but like I said 12 to 14 committed players should be in town.
And a lot of bigger name players in like James and Roberts is probably the biggest one will be talking about as he's the quarterback Oklahoma once him and Jalen Scott the other Alabama player state of Alabama player that the sooners are big time in and it seems like there's been a lot of crystal balls and predictions been going in for him as a flake.
That one will be a huge one go ahead and lock down that other safety that you've been wanting in your room and from there shocking name is popped up case Alexander from down there and Washington Oklahoma tight in him and Cinnaka driver have been to tight in names has been linked to coming on the visit that be huge Oklahoma can make could swing that this weekend.
Yeah so it seems like you know Alexander has been you know training more towards Penn State but don't count out Oklahoma's recruiting staff's ability to sway the momentum of a recruitment we've seen them do it on a number of occasions but yeah James and Roberts that's kind of the highlight of the weekend but also you're bringing in you know Jalen Scott you're bringing in Gabriel Osborne a top you know 50 prospect that you're in a really really good position for Gus Corsair a four star offensive lineman you're bringing in Bodyspares
a four star athlete from Utah it's again it starts that you have so many blue chip prospects here and what's interesting as you look at it to Jay is there's a number of cornerbacks that Oklahoma is heavily investing their time in it looks like they're going to try and take a bigger class than maybe they did in the 2026 cycle when they just took two guys right they took was it Derek Johnson and then they added the kid at the end yeah Lebron Bauer there on a national signing day
they might look to go a little bit bigger because eight in a couple years you're going to be without Eli Bohn you're going to be without a Portland Gillery so you have to find those replacements and sometimes you want to throw numbers at a position and this looks like a recruiting class that is heavy at cornerback and Oklahoma's in a good position for several of those guys I can see them going with at least three this cycle and kind of like what they did in the 2025 cycle yeah three is the expectation I have on them I don't I don't they may go for four but Gabriel Osborne the
Mustang kid to go along with McCale McCraery as well as McCale was at Hall the other one that they've got a few they got a couple of corners already committed so that that's kind of the question for me is do will they will they lock up get my
Kale Davis my apologies he's the other commit will they lock up Gabriel Osborne the the local kid and there's another local kid that I'm hearing that we've been looking at Daniel gave it out of UConn so you got a UConn kid in the Mustang kid their rivals so
they don't even value stand up exactly so they'll probably there's a chance you go for both I mean they're both pretty tall guys six two six three six four ish guys ranging long so they'll be they'll be worth it to have because you could probably move them around the safety you can move them around possibly even cheetah they bulk up
I do see them grabbing probably three in this class which it's kind of interesting because when I looked at the clack when I'm looking at the roster here I've already put together my roster look
you've got of course Tristan Haynes is a red shirt freshman and Dakota Dakota fields who you just picked up he's a red shirt freshman then you've got Derek Johnson as well as LeBron Bauer soft moors in prints who you also picked up recently in courtland gillery
class it seems to pretty young I mean I thought he thought Boeing being the junior and Jacobi Johnson being an actual senior they're all juniors and down so adding three more that would
really expand that room a lot makes me wonder if they're they may they may quote-unquote process some guys or move some guys in other positions like I said something go to safety there's always a possibility there too because you also got a JJ Newcombe who's also you know he's five 90 be red shirts off more who can who's also playing some cheetah so yeah kind of like the Kindle Dolby Robe makes you wonder kind of what that what they're going after if they do what they're what the plan is if they do go ahead
and get three guys yeah and you look at the offensive line recruiting obviously Cooper Hackett Caden Penny or the big fish that Oklahoma's landed in this one Luke Wilson also being town they're going to be having Gus Corsair Brian Swanson in there as well as Tyson Ross who Oklahoma receives some crystal or predictions in favor of landing a commitment from him so Isaiah Karin is another one that they recently offered I think in the last just few weeks out of the Dallas area so they've
got a number of offensive lineman that they've zeroed in on and they have the opportunity to be really selective here because you again you've added Hackett you've added penny those are your cornerstone pieces in the recruitment of offensive lineman in the cycle now you it's like who else wants to join us yeah you're here the guys we want we only have this many spots available who's coming with me and it's going to probably be a rush to jump in the boat a little bit but
they've got some intriguing interior offensive line prospects that are going to be coming into town this week well who else is intriguing to you that you're seeing on this list that you're excited to see what some of the buzz looks like coming out of this weekend yeah honestly the biggest one for me still is a hundred percent getting James and Roberts in the fold him in Jalen sky there are the two that really to me feel like they move the move the needle now Joseph Graves is an interesting one is it's
the rumors are true Joseph Graves is a toaster boy that's at IMG Academy now so similar to all our David Stone he's a he's one that really intrigues me if Oklahoma decides to pull the trigger to grab from six to two eighty five you know like that local kid that now is at IMG getting him to come visit I mean I'm wondering if Oklahoma is really serious about pursuit of film he's got a good he's got a pretty
solid offer sheet for the most part but it's not as impressive as you would like but I can say it again local kid that's one that I would like to see go down yeah and it's one of those things to like trust the offers trust the evaluations if Jim naggy and his staff and Brent
animals David Stone or not David Stone Todd Bates and Miguel Chaves and hey trust David Stone former you know teammates you know he would have been of what a sophomore when David Stone was a senior or he would have been a freshman when stone was a senior I think
he was in Tulsa at that time I'm just with the IMG Academy last season so they didn't cross paths and I could pass him but they're Oklahoma kids yeah so with Jake Rell at least he got to play with Jake Rell a little bit Jake Rell that's intriguing in and of itself but it if he's coming to campus for this weekend I got
to believe that Oklahoma is interested now it might be interested if some of the other dominoes don't go their way in the cycle but it'll be at least intriguing to see how that all pans out because it's worked out well for them to land kids on the defensive line from IMG Academy so far all right
