Colpikes delivers in the fastball, Ashburn is in for strike. Thinking about Joe Becker, training mules, you know that old mule skinner story about a fellow who brought his mules to a trainer to have him trained.

2:04:54I guess Becker would know it. The strike one pitch to Ashburn is a curve in there, one two. Colpikes are mules of the trainer and the trainer says, by an outpain him and the first thing does is pick up a two by four and hit the mule right between the eyes. And the owner says, what's the matter with you? You lose your mind or something and what are you hitting the mule for? And the fellow says, I didn't hit him, I'm just trying to get his attention. I'm ready to give it up. The only two pitch, Ashburn is a fastball foul away. Loosing up in the Philadelphia Bowl fan, the familiar number 36, Robin Roberts. On to to Ashburn, it's in 2.99. It's a big at bat for Richie and it's a comeback out of the mound. Colpikes handles it, flips to first and that does it for Ashburn.

2:05:55Now let's see when the last time Ashburn failed, it had 300. There's been a few years. One out in the eighth inning, 2.1 Philadelphia in the battered Don Landrum, he is over three batting 143. Time running out of 1957. Landrum moves away from an inside fastball ball one. So Ashburn ends the year under 300 for the first time since 1952. And that's a note. Colpikes winds and the one offense is fastball high, ball two, 2.0. One that I just come to bat for perhaps the last wind up of 1957. For all I just and Kennedy, should anybody get on, maybe Jackson. But two in offense, in there for the strike, 2.1.

2:06:59So Colpikes should be going into the service as a chance to fire a fastball for the last time for a while. The 2.1 pitch is the fastball and he missed. Ball free, 3.1. On deck the villain of the pitch as far as Brooklyn is concerned and the hero does far for Philadelphia, Boucher. His home run in the sixth inning with a man aboard is the difference. Philly's 2, Brooklyn 1, Ethaning. The 3.1 pitch, curve ball foul away, 3.2. Land remuiting, 3 balls two strikes. Colpikes checks with Pignatano. Now the 3.2 pitch, fastball fouls. Phillies were helped considerably by the young ball players this year. Ed Boucher, Harry Anderson, Bob Bowman and the pitcher, Jack Sandford, Cardwell, foul. Help them along. The 1-0 pitch down low ball 2, 2 and 0.

2:10:05Phillies had two breaks against them with the plus side of the young ball is coming through. Lo Patta being injured and almost useless for most of the year and Jones in ability to hit. On this final day of the year, we'll run down the pitching record. So the ball, the boys, and then when the dodgers hit and the ninth will say they're batting averages. More or less, close up shots. The one-off pitch, Anderson swings and misses one and one. Billy Harris, on one, Don Besson, one and three. Rod you Craig, six and eight, prior to today. Anderson waiting, co-fanks, 11 and two, Harry Swings and Foulsadbite. The National League earned run average leaders. Johnny Padres, as we check out in Rothfingers, they are not officially out. They do not get league sanctioned, but you can just bat bet on them. Padres will win the title, followed by Don Drysdale, the third man in the league. He'll tie Drysdale, he'll be Warren Spawn. The Padres aren't officially as one of the ERA titles. They only dodged you Richardson's Dazy Vance. The one and two pitches way up five, Pignatano leaps in the air to grab it, tune to.

2:14:17The dodger pitching staff turned in the 18 shutouts this year. Padres had six Drysdale four, Newcomme four, McDevid two, Magli one and Magli and LeBine time combined for shutouts. The two two pitches low, ball three. So Sandy co-fanks has gone to a full count to Harry Anderson. Don Landerman's second, Ed Bushay at first, one out on the eighth inning, two to one and favor the Phillies. Gofak set, checks his men, the three to pitch, fastball, golf stat and a big high bounce to Gilliam at the short hop that has played a hard his in time and everybody else moves up 90 feet. That was a very tough play for Gilliam for two counts. One is Bruce A. went by almost shielded the ball from Gilliam's vision, the other is and it was a big high bounce and a left hand batter going down the line.

2:15:19Gilliam had the short hopper, he made the play. Okay, two out, run as a second and third and Willie Jones the batter. Willie is struck out it into a double play in bounce out, batting two seventeen. Gofak's two is wind up and delivers and Jones takes a curveball in for strike. You're wondering about the Dodger bullpen this year, we can tell you about the men who saved games. In other words, coming on when the Dodger's lead, not getting credited with a victory but at the same time holding the opponent quiet and the Dodgers could hold onto their lead. It's a big department when you talk about relief pictures. The strike one fits to Jones a fastball foul back on to. Flemla Bind saved seventeen in relief. Eddie Robuck, who won eight also saved eight. Johnny Padres saved three as a starting for three one twelve

2:16:21and Sal Magley saved one in relief. So that's just about the story on pitching this year. And the pitching on the Brooklyn ball club is certainly the big beacon light of the future, it's quite a stat. Gofak's getting a sign, oh and two, the counts to Willie Jones. Sandy looks over a third at Landrum, now goes to his wind up. The strike two fits, fastball got him swinging. Gofak's strikes out Willie Jones and for Philadelphia in the eighth inning. And it's an odd thing, Gofak's faced five men in the inning. He walked two, two other men made out. And the first four men who hit the ball fairly well and two of them got on baseball left handers. And the one right hander, if you're playing for percentage wise, who should be able to give Gofak's trouble, he strikes him out.

2:17:24The end of eighth, Philadelphia two and Brooklyn one. And before we get to the ninth inning, what might be the final half inning of 1957, let's have a few words from Jerry. So Farfillo ended up at the 306. Gil Hodges coming up in the entire ball club, rooting for Gil as of this moment. He had a scoring fly ball in the first inning, doubled and bounced out. Hodges is batting 299. He has to have a base hit now, so it's 300 for the year. Swings and fowsed back on one. Another note about this ball game, the Dodgers have not lost to a left hand of this year. Six and the old. And Seth Morehead has him down 2-1 with one out of the ninth. So Hodges batting 299.

2:19:32Morehead delivers and the pitches in there, so Gil's in a hole, account no balls and two strikes. So this could very well be the last time this year that we'll be doing any play by play for you. It's been a good year, maybe not a great one for the ball club, but there's been a lot of thrills and excitement. And a few laughs and just about everything you want out of the year. Curve in the dirt, one and two. It's sure like to thank all you folks, for your patience when we boot them. And for your kind letters as well. One out of the ninth and two one Philadelphia. The end of 57. Hodges swings a fly ball to left field and friends he's not going to get it. And it's in it right there to take it. So Hodges does not get the base hit. And Gil ends the season batting 299. That's too bad. All right, two outs. And perhaps the last man to come up for Brooklyn this year, Bob Kennedy.

2:20:37And this for Bob will be his last at bat in the Major League. Lee Soy as announced he plans to retire the end of this year. Curve ball to Kennedy and for a strike on one. Another note on Kennedy. Back in 1939 when he broke into the Major League. He played his first Major League game right here at Conymax Stadium. So his baseball career is just about made the complete circle. Wouldn't you say? Kennedy swings and fows it by going to. He starts and ends it. That's Philadelphia. Started in 39 and closing it up in 57. So the Dodgers with one strike left to them. Trail 2-1 in the ninth inning. In the closing game. The strike two fits. Just cut on and foul back. On to. On deck Randy Jackson.

A home run by Boucher in the sixth inning with one on, turned the tide. After the Dodgers had gotten a thunder and grunt in the first inning in the final store, two to one the fill got in front. Jerry, let's say you did your first Brooklyn ball game when Labor Day last year. That's right, Ben. For the first full year. And Alan Ross, what about you, how long you been digging out figures for Brooklyn? Well, I started with the Brooklyn Club in 1947, but I've been on the radio. You're that old? I guess I am, and I feel it right now.

2:24:40Happy how long have you been, uh, I've been in the game back for solid years for Happy Durkin. And he also did a little bit way back in 39. My Tommy Volani are producer since 1952. And it's, uh, in the end of our eight year was the ball club. What, those years have certainly gone fast. Eight years. Fifty, well, you've heard me here, but what about 20 years, have you? They've just got out of it. I don't know, they've been 20 years. Well friends, that's just about it. We don't want to go into a big, long thing here just to let you know that we sure enjoyed working for you all year long. We hope we brought you some enjoyment. I imagine sometime rather we've gotten a little mad at the other end too, but too, that's the way it goes. We would try it. And now you'd like to remind everybody that this final game, Jerry, was brought to them like every game through 1957 by home.
