Play Dodgers who is a very nice fellow. Since Mr. Burns is a real estate man, he evidently knows how to pick out of all part because he's done a good job. This Washington Park, locked between 4th and 5th avenues for the benefit of U-Fans and extends from 3rd to 5th Street. When Mr. Burns got the grandstand and the bleachers erected two years ago, he called it Washington Park. For it was here or nearby that George Washington's continental army fought the Battle of Long Island. Just beside us in the booth here this afternoon, we have a young fellow, General Handyman of the Brooklyn Dodgers, who is selling tickets here this afternoon for this immense crowd of nearly 4,000 people who are going to watch the mighty Browns in action.

5:16And our good friend watching alongside us is Charlie Abbott. You know, it was just 5 years ago that these St. Louis Browns were organized. We'll have their story for you in a moment. But I just want to say that back in 1846, 30 years ago, this game we call baseball was pretty wet behind the years. But today, in 1886, it's grown up to be a man, just about 40 years old. And the 1880s, these years have seen baseball become harder to play. Nowadays, I think it's much more exciting to watch than it was in the old days gone by. Of course, some old timers insist that these modern days of baseball are just as good as the old days of baseball 20 years ago back in 1856 or in 1866. But I don't think so. I think perhaps the old days were a little bit better, a little bit more thrilling. The days of the old athletics, the mutuals, the Cincinnati Red Stockings of 69.

6:20And the old carriages of those days making fun of baseball's new rules in this year of 1886. They more or less scoff at the new styles of pitching and base running. And especially to the old timers, get a big kick out of the game's new fangled protective gear and the dead ball. And by now, of course, we know that the curved line delivery has been perfected by pitchers. And that's the most amazing thing that you'll ever see. You'll probably see Dave Fouts who'll be on the mound out here this afternoon for the St. Louis Browd throw a ball. And if you watch it closely, you'd swear that you saw that ball curve. I mean it. He throws a ball pretty fast, but he can also make it curve. Candy Cummings started that and it's now got to be quite a fat. I don't think it will last because I think pretty soon the batters will catch you on the hitting this curved line delivery. But I'm pretty sure that Fouts finds you the effective at the moment. All of these new fangled baseball techniques just coming to being in the last four or five years.

7:22And while they may not last, any fan will tell you that they make the game a lot more interesting. Last year, the game of baseball took a mighty big stride, I think. Last year was the year, you know, that we had our first authentic world championship series for the championship of America. That was the year last year when the Brown played the Chicago White stockings. Of course, the outcome is still in question because they had a lot of squabbles and recrimination and the claiming of the championship by both sides and as much as one game had been forteted to Chicago by the Empire. But since that great event last year, men have traveled further than they ever expected just to see a baseball game. Why as far west as the Mississippi River, the names and the games and the stuff and substance of baseball have passed on many a limp. We'll have the starting lineups for this game between the mighty Browns and the Brooklyn bridegrooms here at Washington Park in just a moment. But first, I want to say something about these St. Louis Browns. Just five years ago, we mentioned previously that the Browns were first organized and their story is as follows.

8:25The National League kept such cities as Cincinnati, Louisville and St. Louis from getting a franchise. But that certainly didn't deprive those towns from playing ball. The fact is, they played in an atmosphere that was leisurely and quite unrestrained. It was Al Spink of the Sporty News and his brother, William Spink, the game's greatest writers who formed the Browns in that year, five years ago, 1881. Al Spink contacted OP Kailer, the Cincinnati baseball writer, and suggested to him that Kailer pick up as many professional baseball players as he could at the Queen City from the Red Stockings of 69 and call them the Reds. Kailer obliged and soon the two teams met. That was on May 22nd, five years ago, in 1881. Fans were so baseball hungry that they really ate up that ballgame which ended with the Browns winning 15-8 over the Reds. It was at that point that Al Spink was able to get a backer for the Browns. The legendary, a man I think it'll go down in all baseball history, Chris Vandray.

9:30As you all know, he is an incredible figure in sports these days. He came over here to the land of the free as an immigrant. Almost 40 years ago, he was then just 17 years ago. Well, Chris Vandray has stayed here in New York most of the time, drifting to St. Louis for a few years now. The owner of the St. Louis Browns. In St. Louis before becoming owner of the Browns, he clerked in a grocery store, became proprietor of a small delicatessen that Sullivan and Spring have news in St. Louis. And Chris Vandray didn't know too much about the game of baseball, but he could see the big crowds he drew, and that was what he liked. He still liked it. He is the owner of the St. Louis Browns. The Browns. The Dodgers, if we've told you are managed by Charlie Burn, the Browns will be piloted out here this afternoon by their first baseman, Charlie Kamisky. And here are the starting lineups for this afternoon's game that you may want to list on your scorecards. Starting at third base and leading off for the Brooklyn bridegrooms, who will bat first in the ballgame.

14:48So it's only late on my third base, Dui Gleason that charged up, hip on heel in left field, Charlie Komisky at first base, Kurt Welch in center field, Yank Robinson at second base, Bob Carruthers in right field, Dave Fouts doing the pitching for the St. Louis Browns and Doc Bushong will be doing the catching this afternoon. The great Bill Terry on the mound for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Dave Fouts, one of the aces of this St. Louis staff pitching for the St. Louis Browns. So naturally this is going to be a great game, a wonderful game. This baseball has come a long way and you'd be surprised how many people are out here this afternoon. In case you've never seen the boys on these two teams playing out here this afternoon, I'll try to give you an idea of what they look like. The cut of the uniforms is pretty much the same as it has been for the last couple of years except for their different coloring. Some of the labs are sporting this year's handlebar moustaches, some are clean shaven, around their neck, the little black bows, some of them tuck onto the color, some of them hang down like a Buster Brown tie,

15:50and their caps angle off into a small curved bill. Those not wearing caps, light your big stock of black hair. Well plow sit down, parted in the middle. So that's pretty much the setting here this afternoon. Everybody in their finaly for the Saturday afternoon game, which will be under its under way and about five minutes from now, Dave Fouts and Bill Terry are out warming up on their respective sides of home plate. And the ball game will be underway in just a moment. Let's pause down the line 45 seconds for this message from your local announcer. All right, sir. 20:00George Pinkney will lead off for the Brooklyn Dodgers, and this ballgame is just about to get on his way. Up there is Pinkney in that little color of his. Back behind home plate, 50 feet is Doc Bushong, and out on the mound, 45 feet away from the batter is Dave Fouce pitching for the mighty St. Louis Browns. George Pinkney steps up, waiting to have war club, little thick around the handle, all elitim down at third base, dui gliesmith shortstop, yank robinsmith second base, Charlie Komisky at first base. The outfield shows Tiponiel and Muff, Kurt Welch in center field, and Bob Carruthers out there in right field. This Washington Park layout of the Brooklyn trolley Dodgers, and of Charlie Byrne, is down in a natural dugout, a natural hollowed out place in the earth. So although we have a fence out in center field, there's not much need of one really, you have to hit one up over the dugout and up out of the incline before you can worry about hitting it over the fence. And it's George Pinkney, the batter of the moment. Dave Fouce delivers to George, it is a low fastball that goes across the plate and bounces down to Doc Bushong for bow one.

21:02Doc takes the ball on one bounce, he is standing 50 feet behind home plate. Doc Bushong doing the catching this afternoon. Out on the mound Dave Fouce, 45 feet away from the batter. Dave delivers, George Pinkney starts to swing, and he objects to one pile watch and says that he called for the ball to be put outside but they put it inside. An up pile watch just lets it go by and the count is now one ball and one strike. One ball and one strike as Dave Fouce is throwing into George Pinkney. 22:02Dave Fouce, uh, delivers, it is too low again. Doc Bushong takes it on about. Bushong is looking at his glove, he is the only player wearing a glove out here this afternoon. Naturally, although I have heard a rumor that uh some baseball teams are considering letting their first baseman wear a glove also. I do not know whether that is true, of course Charlie Komisky is not wearing a glove here this afternoon. Three balls and one strike. Dave Fouce works from 45 feet and has the pitch thrown low again. George Pinkney takes it for ball four and the account is now four balls and one strike. Pinkney at bat, he's a right-handed batter, plays third base. Thought ready to deliver in there, goes right through for strike and it's four balls, two strikes now. That's the count on George Pinkney, a right-handed batter and lead off man for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Tip on the earl and left-feels, Kirk Welch and Setup Eild and Bob Carruthers and Right-Feel. Let's pull a little bit to the left side for George Pinkney. That's worked, there's ball five. Low, it came across the outside corner but a little below the knees of George Pinkney, lead off batter for the Brooklyn Drive Rooms who are batting in the top half of the first inning.

23:08So you count as five balls and two strikes on George Pinkney, right-handed batter and lead off man. Thought set, delivered to Pinkney, low for ball six and it is now six and two, ball six and strike two, Pinkney at bat, third base, one of the Brooklyn Dodgers. I think that George is almost as good a third base, one of the brownies have the saffron, O'Holly, late them perhaps, not quite as proficient. I don't think he's quite the fielder. Here's the six two pitch, Dave Watt-Faup's works and George Pinkney takes in the half for a call strike three right over. No, wait a second, wait a second, let's see, there's umpire watch saying that we'll have to check it here. Umpire watch says that the batter called for the pitch high and he did throw it low. So they'll have to throw all over again. After throw all over again, he is outlawing that pitch because it was not thrown where batter George Pinkney wanted it. And it does not go for strike three. So the count is still six balls and two strikes on George Pinkney lead off batter for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

24:15Here at Washington Park, bounce works, Pinkney swings and fouls it off to the left side. Six balls and two strikes with count remains. Of course the foul balls don't count as a strike, you know that. As a matter of fact, they don't count at all. Doc Bush Young, the only player wearing a glove here this afternoon standing 50 feet behind home plate taking the pitches on one bounce. There's Pinkney signaling that he wants a fair pitch across the heart of the plate. And I should say he is asking for that pitch right about at his solar plexus. We'll check it for you. Yep, that's just about at his midsection. Dave Watt, ready to work. George Pinkney swings and hits the bouncing ball off down to the left side. Dewey Gleason is up with it. The short stop throws to first baseman, Charlotte Kamesky in time for the out. And George Pinkney after working to a count of six balls and two strikes, smacks one down to Dewey Gleason. The short stop throws him out at first base. Remember that all elitom, the third baseman of the St. Louis Brown, will be on the air with us on the Liberty Broadcasting System immediately after this ball game is over.

25:15And so now we have one down and up comes Bud McClellan, top half of the first inning, second Brooklyn baseman. Bud McClellan at that. Dave pops on the mound for the mighty St. Louis Browns, King Kims of these American associations. It's the broad grooms in the Brown. Bud McClellan up for the Charlotte Dodgers. Charlotte is running by the ballpark here at Washington Park. He may be able to hear him in the background. Beer vendors going everywhere for their big signs. Dave Fast Wines works. McClellan swings in the first pitch and Bud laughs it up into the air. A high fly ball going up toward Kurt Welch in center field. He moves over four or five steps under it waiting and takes it for the off. Two are away in the top half of the first inning for the Brooklyn Dreadgroom. Pinkney and McClellan cut down in order by this able right hander working out here this afternoon for the St. Louis Browns. Dave Fouts FOU TZ. He stands back 45 feet out on his pitchers mound away from home plate and receives the ball thrown to him by Doc Buschong.

33:35Also, Harriet Beechestow is here this afternoon. I see Mark Twain down along the third base line. One of the other celebrities. All right Bill Terry delivers underhand pitch to Dewey Gleason which is taken in there for ball one. Gleason calls for that high and he thought it went a little low to him and says something to umpire walls. Umpire walks just allows the protest. And the count is one ball and no strikes on Dewey Gleason who calls for the next one right up across his uniform insignia. Terry underhand him and it goes just about up around the insignia but it's a little too close to him as a matter of fact it almost hit him on the head and he dropped back to the earth and the count is two balls and no strike to a nothing. Now he picks himself up again. Dewey Gleason the plate one away the bottom half of the first inning for the St. Louis Brown. On first base Bill Phillips down behind the plate. Uh, his peoples I think he uh, I think Doc Bush Young who's catching this afternoon for the St. Louis Browns is about a good of catchers we have in the American association with the possible exception of Connie Mack of the Washington senators.

34:41Connie was sold this year with uh, four other players to the Washington senators. That was a big deal. That thing I believe amounted to nearly $3,000 with those four players including Connie Mack. But the biggest transaction of all was Ed Della had his sale this year for $1,900. $1,900 Ed Della had he brought. Well, there's the umpire up. 39:33The ball went over the stand style along the third baseline and Umpire Walsh is asking for the ball to be returned. It is not returned and here is Umpire Walsh calling the 5 minute intermission. The band will play now for 5 minutes while we look for the ball. The rule being, as you know, that if a ball is lost, the band plays for 5 minutes and at the end of that time, if the ball has not been found, we will then have to throw another ball into the baseball game. The Brooklyn Place Band is playing in the background. We are in a 5 minute intermission now. We are searching for the baseball. The Ui Gleason on a 6 ball and 2 strike count. Kitted up over the left field stands and it went out into the midst of some buggies over there. Several of the spectators are assisting us in finding it. We have not found it yet. While we are looking for the baseball in the standard 5 minute intermission here called by Umpire Walsh, the band will continue to play.

40:47Well apparently we are not going to find the ball. I do not know it was hit out of the midst of some buggies and here is Umpire Walsh examining a new ball as though it is his intention to throw the new ball in play. The rule here you know is that if a ball is lost, we wait for 5 minutes while we are looking for it and then if we can't find it, we go on and go on the new ball. Umpire Walsh is proceeding to do right now so Bill Terry will have a new baseball to work with which is rather unusual losing one this early in the baseball game. You know it is an interesting thing to know about today's baseball. People like the game and they go out here at Washington Park to see it and yet the hotels want to admit baseball players. The other night some of them went around to one of the better hotels here in New York to register and the clerk was very nice to them until he found out that they were baseball players. And then he told them, we can't take baseball players. Well the boys all went around town and no hotel would let them stay. Finally they ended up at a third rate hotel and got in but on condition that they could not mingle with the other guests.

41:55The fact is they weren't even allowed in the dining room and the hotel gave the ball players their meals in a special room. One of the most interesting things was one of the ball players got a tough steak and nailed it to the door on the way out. I think that's one of the reasons why they can't stay in the hotels and not allowed to eat in dining rooms. I didn't think that was a very gentlemanly gesture. I believe that as soon as the band completes this number play will be resumed with Dewey Gleason at bat and the count six balls and two strikes on the St. Louis Brown shortstop. Alley Latham went out on the line drive to Pete Neath the third baseman of the Brooklyn Drive Drums. Tip O'Neill is on deck. He'll be the next batter to hit. And then down in the hole is Charlie Komiske. He clean up batter in first baseman here in the bottom half of the first inning. Well, Bill Terry out on the mound standing out there and I'm pile watch is going to call play ball. He's given up the other ball as a lost cause. The other ball is definitely lost. We're not going to be able to find it and we're going to have to have a new ball. So it's all set to go. The police band concludes its number and Bill Terry will work with the new ball.

42:59The one pile was takes his position about 60 feet behind home plate standing right behind people's the catcher and Bill Terry out on the mound 45 feet away from the batter. Dewey Gleason up at bat six balls and two strikes the count on him. Bill Terry ready to work and does Dewey swings and fouls this one back into the crowd. But there's a lady in a with a hit on top of her parasol and bound it on over and she reaches back and picks it up and will accommodate the umpire this time by throwing it back into the ball game. So this is a ball that we didn't lose six balls and two strikes the count remains back out to Bill Terry. It goes six and two on batter. Dewey Gleason who's been out there for some little time now because of this five minute intermission and Dewey is beginning to look a little bit tired at the plate. Six balls two strikes. Bill Terry winds up now works underhand pitch which is one on as a hard bounder down toward McClellum. The second baseman buddies up where it makes a nice stop and throws to Gleason and throws him out by step. That's all. As McClellum threw the bill fell up the first baseman and through Dewey Gleason out by step. So there are two away in the bottom half of the first inning for these St. Louis Browns and up at bat now will be Tip O'Neill.

44:04Tip's a man who tries to bunch those foul balls. O'Neill. O'Neill in EI double L, Tip O'Neill. Jim O'Neill if you prefer. He's the luck dealer. I'd say this base game of baseball is a cross between cricket and rough and ready football. Whatever I haven't seen too many football games but the two or three I've seen look a little rougher than baseball. It played at Nail that state to the wall by the way was Aussie Shrek. Some of you may know him. Bill Terry on the mound, Tip O'Neill up at the plate. Pink me at third, Smith at short, McClellum at second. Bill Phillips at first base. Bill Terry winds up now. He delivers that underhand pitch to Tip O'Neill who takes it in there for ball one. It bounces on two bounce there to peoples. That's all right. It doesn't make any difference whether it bounces two or three times.

45:09So long as it does bounce, people takes it, throws back out to Bill Terry. He arches it out because of course it's 95 feet back to the pitcher from where he is playing out to the 45 feet in front of home plate mound. He's catching that ball on the bounce peoples. Out of about 4,000 watching this very important and crucial struggle out here this Saturday, July 24th afternoon. Between the Brooklyn Trial of Judges and the St. Louis Browns or the Brooklyn Bridegrooms if you prefer. And there is some rumor around the crowd. Somebody has just passed me a note here that Ed Delaide had he hit a home run day before yesterday in Washington. We'll check on that if we can. We'll just have to find out. I don't know where that information comes from but I think I'll speak of the sporting news as responsible for it. If so, we're very deeply indebted. That evidently happened in the game day before yesterday at Washington Ed Delaide hitting a home run.

46:12Bill Terry set the throw. It does to Tip O'Neill to swings. It's a high pop fly going out toward peoples. Or a red or out toward Bill Phillips. He's waiting under it at first base. Bill takes it for the up and that's three away. They're all gone in the bottom half of the first inning for the St. Louis Browns. No St. Louis runs. No basets. No errors and nobody left on. So both pitchers have survived the initial onslaught and got safely passed the first inning with no runs resultant and no basets for either side. Bill Terry opposing Dave Fops out here this afternoon at Washington Park in Brooklyn between 3rd and 4th avenues. Everybody going over to the German disturbed her now which is alongside third base. That consists of a keg of beer and a dipper and everybody eyeing it very carefully. As you know any player who reaches first base is entitled to a dipper full of beer here and will be allowed to have one. But nobody has yet reached first base so nobody has got themselves a dipper full of beer.

47:14Well Jerry Duggett will probably have some further information on this game. The second inning will get underway after a while. I imagine as soon as umpire waltz decides to call play in again. But right now both teams are here. Here go the here go the defensive players back on the field again. Not taking much time between innings back they go. Tip on the other left field Kurt Welch in center Bob Carruthers in right field. Allel A. F. M. at 3rd. Dewey Gleysen at shortstop. Yanke Robinson at 2nd and Charlotte Kameski at first base. Dave Fops will work into Bill Phillips in just a moment and before he does you try it. Well every now and then a team turns up with a long winning streak and you wonder how many games it'll last. 49:21Of course he will face the batter. Doc Bush on down away back behind the plate and Phillips up there with that great big well it resembles a cricket batter something that changed the styles a little bit in the last year or two. Phillips waits us for one low on the knees and it is way outside for ball one. So it's ball one count Phillips the batter and the crowd very gay enjoying themselves this afternoon to Brooklyn for our baseball game between the Brooklyn now double the bridegrooms and the St. Louis Browns and way out west. In comes the pitch Phillips swings at it here's a five ball out toward first place and it's out behind first place. Carothers goes out for it along the foul line he makes the catch for the out. It's one of ways carothers the right fielder made a long run for that ball over toward the right field. He made a nice catch and the fans seem to enjoy that run by carothers. He lost his cap going after it the little cap popped off and he goes back now to pick it up.

50:21So we have one down and here now is Birch the luck fielder. Birch coming in for Brooklyn of course the Brooklyn team at bat they are the home team and batting down the first half of the second inning. So Birch is the batter and only mound out to pitch him down as they fouts on that last pitch a while ago to Phillips. Fouts through the ball he came way down low with his motion and almost drugged the ground with his fingertips. Now in it comes and the Birch swings on it here's a ground ball that goes back to the middle out to pass second base. It's into the outfield and it's a single it's a single for Birch who hit a ground ball right through the box that Fouts tried to stop. He couldn't get it and it went on through second base into center field and there is the first base hit of the ball game. Birch on with a single through the box into center field and Kurt Welch the center fielder threw it back in to second base mongyang Robinson. So now we have one man on base and here is Smith at bat George Smith coming on the shortstop for the Brooklyn bridegrooms.

51:24Smith the batter and he's up now and the pitch comes down to Smith it's low outside way outside. Doc Bush on got that one on second bounce and threw it back to the mound. Of course Birch holding on at first base to not try to run because Bush on can throw the ball pretty good. Smith waiting ball on the count and here's another one this one is high and Bush on had to move to the right side to make the stop on that one did so nicely and the count goes ball two. So it's two balls and no strikes on George Smith and he looks out faces pitcher Dave Fouts and indicates that he'd like to have one about chest high now. So here is Fouts trying to accommodate the batter who asked for the pitch chest high the count is ball two and here it is it is outside. He missed the base and it is ball three. So Smith is waiting now with ball free and no strikes. He's up there we have one man out one man on base at his bird. Bill Terry the adonus pitching for the Brooklyn team now at bat and he of course is a pretty good hitter he's batting number seven in the lineup and comes the pitch swings on it here's a bounding ball out toward alley latum the third base in the comes fast up with it the fall of the first base he threw it out in time alley latum the little third base

56:28and the third baseman came scooting in for a roller off the bat of Terry and picked it up and whipped it across to kamiski at first base in time for the out and that is all for the Brooklyn right grooms in the second inning no runs one hit no errors and birch is left on base at second he got a single a base hit the ground it through the middle in the center field so he is out the side is out on Terry's ground ball to lay them on a weak boundary so that is all for Brooklyn in the top half of the second inning. And at the end of one inning and one half a play our score is nothing or st. Louis the Browns and nothing for the Brooklyn right grooms so that's the way it stands as now we'll have the umpire to call play in the bottom half of the second inning in just a moment and the visiting team from st. Louis will be up with kamiski welch and Robinson it's no score okay. 58:57Kamiski let's it go by for a ball and it's one ball and no strikes we have a picnic at third base Smith at shortstop McCoyle and at second base and Phillips at first base the infield. Kamiski swings on this one and bounces one along towards shortstop income Smith for he's up throws low in the dirt the first and Bill Phillips grabbed the ball on one hop and the batter is out. A nice play there by first baseman Bill Phillips who went down in the dirt and took a ball that bounced in front of him and he caught it as it came up in time to get the batter Kamiski at first base and on par a wall ran from his place way back behind the catcher halfway down toward first base so he could get a better view of the play he did and they called the batter out. Kamiski was a little bit upset he thought perhaps he was there before the ball but umpire waltz turns around and will not talk to him so now the batter is Kurt Welch the center failure for the St. Louis Browns it's no score Welch is up and the pitch is a strike he let it go by but it was in over the plate where he asked for it and he goes as a strike one.

The old scotchman enjoys the privilege this afternoon that can come only once in a lifetime. The privilege of living history again. I have with me on the other end of a telephone at his home in Garden City Long Island, the amazing Olly Laiton. This is the same Olly Laiton who you've just heard play shortstop in the game between the Browns and the Bright Rooms. He played third faith though, he will find. I mean third faith, sure you did. In 1886, Olly was 27 years old that year, 64 years ago. He was one of the greatest ball players of his day, the handlebar mustache day. Olly was a great player and a bygone day which only a handful of you will be able to remember.

2:48:38Olly Laiton was born in 1859, two years before the Civil War. He started playing baseball 14 years after baseball was invented. Only 14 years. He was born 10 years before the first professional baseball team ever came into existence. So here is the half forgotten past living again, the day before yesterday of baseball, the oldest living ex-major Ligger, Olly Laiton. At 91, how do you feel Olly? Pretty good, pretty good. I got a little bad back otherwise, pretty good. Now where are you talking from right now Olly? Where are you talking from now? I'm talking from my home in this garden city. Now what is your occupation now Olly Laiton? What's my occupation? Yes sir. Well I am, I have charged the press boxes and both ground. In the polo grounds and in Yankee Stadium you are in charge of the press boxes.

2:49:39You are the last 15 years. I see. Olly, I want to ask you a question about some men back in baseball history that maybe some people won't even recognize but I know that the two of us are going to remember very well. Do you remember Big Ed Della Hattie? Della Hattie? Yes. Why play Della Hattie again and all the time? You played against Big Ed Della Hattie all the time. To the Della Hattie. I see. Would you say that Ed Della Hattie was one of the greatest hitters that baseball ever saw? At that time yes, him and Lagerway. Della Hattie and not Blasjway. Yes. Well now who? Jesse Barkick. Jesse Barkick. And here we definitely. Here we definitely. Yeah, I guess it was the bad. Now, who would you say was the greatest hitter you ever saw before 1900? Before 1900, yes sir. Tip O'Neill. Tip O'Neill was the greatest hitter. I had a life batting average about 6, 360.

2:50:41At a life batting average of 360. He was a great batter. All right. Now, he played left field that he knocked. He was a Saint Louis. Yes sir. O'Neill. That was Tip O'Neill playing left field for Saint Louis, wasn't it? Am I correct there? Am I correct that that was the same O'Neill that played left field for Saint Louis? Yes. Tip O'Neill. Tip O'Neill. Yes sir. It was another Tip O'Neill in Texas. But today, of course, he never played ball, I don't think. Who do you think was the greatest all around baseball player you ever saw early? Well, at that time? No, just all through the history of the game. Oh, now? Well, if I just rather say... Well, what did you want to now fielder and then fielder? Well, let's take the outfielders first. Who was the greatest all around outfielder you ever saw? Well, the greatest outfielder I ever saw, I think,

2:51:42the Maggio. Was it the present day Joe de Maggio? Yes. That's very interesting. You'd say that he was better than Tip O'Neill or Delahatti of those boys. Tip O'Neill, Tip O'Neill had a bad arm, but he was an ordinary fielder, but he could hit. I see. Now, who was the greatest in fielder you've ever seen? Well, at that time, at that time, Wagner. And would you say that Honest Wagner is the greatest in fielder you've ever seen? No, I wouldn't. Because a little fellow he playing sharp stuff for the ink is the greatest I ever saw. Of course, he had a great spitten spit ball. Uh-huh. Now, were old players before 1900 like Hauss Ratburn and Ed Della Haddie? As a whole, would you say that they were better ball players or worse ball players than the present day lot? At the present? Uh-would you say that the old time ball players like Ratburn and King Kelly and Kat Bansson and Della Haddie were greater or less great than the present day crop like Demagio,

Ha-ha-ha. How know what you mean? Yeah, just think of it. We used to play baseball and now on three quarters. Matt here to pitch a noun 35 minutes. Now, it- it takes two hours of you seeing the papers. Two hours of happened three hours of happened. Picture taking these times. Looking for signs to catch you walking down. Huzzle in the near end field. Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to know, uh- I want to impress you with just how old Arley Latham is and how many years ago he played baseball. Now baseball was invented supposedly in 1845.

2:55:48When was the first year that you played a baseball game, Arley? Well, I thought I'd start to play for money and uh, in 72. In 72? Yeah. In other words, uh, you started to play less than ten years after the end of the Civil War. Yeah, I was thirteen years old. I was catching. You were catching? Yeah, I was there. They taught by play delivery in Stonem, Massachusetts. In Stonem, Massachusetts. And we had sit-paras. Sit-paras. Geraldine-paras. Uh-huh. The singer. Father, playing first place. Ah, I see. As would I get him go to Philadelphia in 82. Ah, I see. Uh, Connie Mack was catching, then, was he? Connie Mack was not then, no. Well, he was catching up- he started in the 80s. That's right. Yes, he- he was catching with Pittsburgh. Well, Washington also wasn't he? Uh-huh. And then he also catched with the Washington senators. Well, now I couldn't say. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.

2:56:48Now, your first-butt baseball game was then in 1872 and you were thirteen years old. Yeah. Which means that you started playing baseball way back when. Now, what was the difference in the baseball rules those days? Can you tell? Well, then you know, my day we just have a new rule. Ah, I see. We had- we had high-preeds in Philadelphia in 82. Uh-huh. With our reach. And he had a semi-procure. And there was only four national eat-ups then. Yes, sir. And we used to play them as they come these and went away. Uh-huh. In 82. Ah, I see. In 83, that's the year I went to St. Louis. Uh-huh. Well, that's- that's something. Uh-uh. Now, Oli, uh- Do you remember candy Cummings of Brooklyn? Who? A fellow named Candy Cummings. I'm going to take you way back now. Candy? Uh-uh. His name was Cummings. He is credited with developing the curveball.

2:57:49No, I don't remember. I thought you might remember him. And that would give us a link with something that is practically in the original days of baseball. Now, Oli, uh- I'm going to really test your memory. Uh-uh. On, uh- On your plan- on- You- you were the, uh- manager of the St. Louis Browns, what year? I don't know. It was about 80-80 fire, remember, but I'm not sure. I tell you, the listing was sick. The listing got sick and I had tried to take it. Yes, sir. But not for long. Uh-huh. Uh-uh. Now, uh- He was a playing manager as most of the people were in that day. He was the first baseman, uh- Of the, uh- uh- Browns. Oh, Commissioner. Yes, sir. Commissioner- Commissioner started right back. Um, he came up. You remember the name Ted Sullivan?

2:58:49Yes. We're Ted Sullivan. Ted Sullivan brought him from DePUT. I see. And, uh- Long in 80. Uh- When did I- I was- American- so she- That's not in 82 or 83. The American Association began in 83. Well, he's seen my bad Ted Sullivan brought him up. Uh-uh. I see. DePUT. I see. Now, uh- You went on in the year 1886, I remember very well, to win the American Association pennant. And, uh- If I remember correctly, you also played Chicago in that World Series that year, did you not? Yeah. Uh- Do you remember anything funny about that series? Oh, yeah. Well, I tell you one thing, that there's one player, a standout. And he'd be a standout now, and he was- But just, but just think of- That I- Well, I am a star, and that is Kelly, Mike Kelly. King Kelly.

2:59:49Of the Chicago, you know. The S.R.H.M. Yeah, he was wonderful. Now, he- Didn't he start the expression slide, Kelly slide? Huh? Isn't- Isn't wasn't it, uh- Wasn't it Kelly who got the expression started? Slide, Kelly slide? Yeah, that's the one. I thought so. He's with Minneapolis, uh- His son's with Minneapolis. Yeah. Uh- Is he with Minneapolis or his son? Would he want to- Uh-he's, uh- It's his son with Minneapolis, is it not? That's what he is, Napoli. For Minneapolis. For Minneapolis. His son is with Minneapolis, is he not? Oh, no. That's Kelly. Yes, sir. No. All right. He has nothing. No. Well, I'm so grateful to you for talking to us this afternoon. I think it's, uh- Just wonderful, Arle.
