Discussion and self-knowledge Episode 43 St. Gregory now turns to a danger that follows

responsibility closely, losing sight of oneself.

When a person is preoccupied with a care of others, it becomes easy to neglect the interior

life or mistake outward activity for real fidelity.

St. Gregory insists that leadership and service require constant self-knowledge, not introspection

for its own sake, but truthfulness.

A person who doesn't know his own weaknesses, limits and tendencies can not guide others

well.

For St. Gregory, discretion is wisdom, formed by humility, prayer, and an honest awareness

of one's own need for conversion.

From the pastoral rule of St. Gregory the Great, the ruler must examine himself carefully

less while correcting others, he neglects his own wounds.

St. Gregory understands how easily responsibility can distort vision.

When attention is directed outward for long periods, the inner life can become thin, neglected,

or quietly evasive.

A person may become skilled at seeing what is wrong in others, while failing to notice

what remains unhealed in himself.

That's why St. Gregory speaks so strongly about self-knowledge.

He doesn't mean a soul turn inward into endless analysis.

He means a soul willing to stand in the truth.

The one who serves others must remain teachable, repentant, and aware that P2 stands in need

of mercy.

That's where discretion matters.

A person helps a person judge rightly, not only about others, but about himself.

It keeps authority from becoming harsh, blind, or careless.

It prevents correction from becoming hypocrisy.

It teaches the heart to move with great patience because it remembers its own wounds.

This belongs naturally within the Benedictine way.

A holy role doesn't allow a person to hide for long behind role, duty, or appearance.

Emility brings the heart into truth.

Stability keeps a person from running from that truth.

Obedience softens defensiveness and teaches the soul to listen even when the truth is

uncomfortable.

And this matters far beyond formal leadership.

This teachers, pastors, employers, friends, and anyone entrusted with guiding another person

face the same danger.

It's always easier to identify another person's faults and to reckon honestly with one's

own.

St. Gregory reminds us that responsibility doesn't excuse neglect.

It makes self-knowledge even more necessary.

There is mercy in this teaching.

St. Gregory is not asking for perfection before service.

He's asking for honesty within service.

The person who knows his own wounds may correct others with greater tenderness.

The one who remembers his own weakness may lead with greater patience.

Self-knowledge doesn't weaken care, it purifies it.

This remains the measure here as well.

He sees clearly, judges rightly, and loves without distortion.

He never uses truth to wound for its own sake, and he never corrects from pride.

St. Gregory's insistence protects that pattern.

Responsibility must never eclipse conversion.

The one who serves must remain under the gaze of God.

So St. Gregory offers a very sober grace here.

Before we speak, before we correct, before we guide, we must let the truth reach us first.

The heart that remains honest before God becomes safer for others.

The ruler must examine himself carefully, lest while correcting others, he neglects

his own wounds.

Before listening to Scripture, allow your body to settle, remain still.

Let your attention be steady and unguarded.

This posture supports truthfulness rather than self-justification.

Lord Jesus Christ, you know the human heart completely.

Keep us truthful before you, inform us in humility and wisdom. Amen.
