The rule of St. Benedict for daily life, learning to listen to God with a discerning heart,

We now turn to St. Francis of Rome, a wife, mother, widow, and Benedict to nominate.

St. Francis didn't live apart from responsibility. She lived in the middle of it, married young

into a noble Roman household, she served her family, endured illness, suffered the loss

of children, cared for the poor, and later gathered women into an obli community linked to

the Benedict and monastery of Santa Maria Noava. That matters because her holiness didn't

grow in quieter circumstances. It grew in a life that was often interrupted, demanding,

and heavy. Yet her prayer wasn't pushed aside by those realities. It was carried within

them. St. Francis became a witness that Benedict and fidelity can take root not only in

cloister, but also in household life, grief, service, and the long duties love requires.

What she shows is not a lesser path, it is a very searching one. She teaches that God

isn't found only in the moments we set apart for him. He is also found in the duties we'd

rather escape, in the people entrusted to us, and in the work love asks us to do.

From St. Francis of Rome, a married woman must leave God at the altar to find him in her

domestic cares. St. Francis understood something essential. Fidelity is improved by stepping

away from ordinary life, but by remaining present to it. She didn't romanticize her responsibilities,

and she didn't treat them as obstacles to holiness. She received them as the place where God

was asking for her attention, her sacrifice, and her love. That doesn't mean prayer was neglected,

it means prayer was no longer confined to one posture, one room, or one hour. St. Francis of

Rome loved prayer, but she also understood that love of God must pass into love of neighbor,

especially when neighbor is the person already in front of us. Her household duties,

her care of the sick, and her service to the poor weren't departures from devotion. They were part

of it. This is deeply Benedictine. The Holy Rule gives rhythm and direction to the day through

prayer, solmity, and the liturgical life of the church. St. Francis couldn't always remain at

the altar, but that didn't mean that spirit of prayer was lost. The rhythm of the hours, the

memory of the solms, and the movement of liturgical seasons had already formed her heart,

so even in the home, in service, and interpretation, prayer could continue,

what was begun at the altar could still be carried into the ordinary duties of love.

Her witness shows how much the Benedictine way matters. The quiet, order, and structure formed

by prayer, solmity, and the rhythm of the liturgical life don't disappear when interruption comes.

They help sustain the heart within it. St. Francis shows that when disorder presses in from the

outside, a life already shaped by God can remain steadier within. This is deeply Benedictine in another

way too. Stability isn't always geographical, sometimes it's vocational. St. Francis remained

with God by remaining faithful to the obligations she had actually been given. Later, as an oblate,

that Benedictine fidelity took more explicit form, but it had already been tested for years in the

home, in suffering, and in service. That reaches into our lives very directly.

Parish life, family life, work done in charity, matters. The tasks that fill a day aren't spiritually

irrelevant just because they're ordinary. When they're received and offered in love,

they become places of encounter with Christ. St. Francis teaches the heart to stop dividing

life too sharply between prayer and everything else. In a faithful life, obedience and love

old them together. Christ stands at the center of this fidelity. He is found not only in silence and

recollection, but in mercy, service instead fast love. St. Francis teaches us to recognize some

duty and charity meat. That is why her witness remains so powerful. She shows that the soul doesn't have

to leave everyday life to become holy. It has to love God faithfully within it.

Before listening to Scripture, allow your body to settle. Remain upright and present. Let your

posture reflect readiness rather than withdrawal. This posture supports availability rather than escape.

or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you,

or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?

Lord Jesus Christ, you meet us in the demands of daily life. Teach us to remain faithful

where you've placed us and to find you in the duties love requires. Amen.
