BWB 022 - You Just Made The List

0:00Coming up, it's another episode of Breakfast with the Beats from the PitcherList podcast network. First, Mike and I talk about the teams that we think will make the playoffs despite being currently out of contention. Then, we discuss Luis Roberts' potential and Freddie Peralta's recent success. And for the record, I'm all in on one of those players in 2027. After that, we go over Nick Pollock's annual list, which he outlines every pitching matchup down the stretch. And I can't stress to you how important a resource this is and recommend it to you, especially in all daily leaks. Finally, in our mental health moment, we go over our nerves and how we deal with them in our everyday lives. All that and more in episode 22 of Breakfast with the Beats. But first, a quick word.

1:21Price and coverage match limited by state law. Okay, weekend. It's my least favorite weekend of the year, but I'm here and I'm with you. So life is as good as it's going to get. So Tuesday is when we go back to school, right? Yeah, that's my first day. And it's kindergarten, so that day will feel like a week. Yes. And the week will feel like a month and the month will feel like a year. But it's going to be like hurting cats on Tuesday. Part of me? It's going to be like hurting cats on Tuesday. Oh my god. It is so hard. Like it's, you don't understand, like when you leave in June,

2:23when we leave in June, how far they've come, they're independent kids, but they come in like, quote, babies, literally, they don't know what's what, where they're going, what they're doing. And the first month is just routines and rules to make sure that they know what they're going to do the rest of the year. It's, it's crazy. I'm sure they're like feral animals when you have them first coming in. You know what? Actually, they're, they're most for the most part knock on wood. They're pretty quiet timid and just shy, which is kind of good. But sometimes they're just afraid to do anything. And then you've got to show them, no, this is how you hold a pencil like this. Like you've got to hold the pencil. Right. It makes something happen or. Well, your old pal, my Carter was not quiet and shy or timid in kindergarten. No. The trouble started like day three. So I just leave it at that. We'll move on. Nobody wants to hear about my kindergarten troubles with Mrs. Slapec. Godruster. Wonderful woman. For the lot she had to put up with a lot.

3:23So Dave, first question I wanted to ask you before we get into our articles and then we get into the rest of the show. Of the teams right now that would not qualify for the post season, what team are you in on that you think will make it by the end of the season. And I have to say, I find, found your selection fascinating. And I want to ask you about it. But go ahead and tell the audience who you chose. Okay. So my choice was my original choice was going to be who you picked. But since you got to the show doc first, I'm going with the Pittsburgh Pirates. I've been saying all year long that I really like the talent that they've collected. And the only issue with them is that they just haven't been able to stay healthy all at once. But I think it's all coming together now. O'Neill Cruz is back. Connagriff and just returned. They've got good pitching. They've got a loaded bullpen. They've got some good timely hitting. And I think now is the time. And I know they're far behind right now.

4:24I think they're four and a half back. But I think that they showed earlier in the year that when everyone is together, they have what it takes to win. And I think they can do it now. And not to mention they should be getting Ryan O'Hern back, hopefully by next weekend as well. That's your guy. I love Ryan O'Hern. He's so underrated. He just needs a chance to be on the field. And I mean, he's been hurt twice this year. But No, he's a good one. And I think that that's an interesting choice. I mean, the Pirates have been in the mix all year. And they're getting healthy at the right time. And they have the type of pitching staff that if they get in there, they could really cause problems for other teams. Because I got to the show document first, one does that ever happen? I mean, that never, that never happens. I don't, I don't even know how I got to it first. I don't, how did that? Anyway, you are on the ball this week, I guess. I don't know what it was. Yeah, you put your gun on. You put your gun on. I'm never really that far on the ball.

5:24So what I, the team that I really like here, begrudgingly is Toronto. I think Toronto has the experience of having gotten there last year and going really far. Obviously they played it all the way out to game seven of the World Series, but they too seem to be kind of getting healthy at the right time. I like their lineup quite a bit. They've got a lot of pieces there that are really helpful and guys that are performing pretty well at the same time. But their pitching staff is intriguing to me. And I don't know if you're seeing it there, Dave. I mean, you would know better than I do since you see the games more often. But I haven't Dylan Seas and Jose Soriano at the top there is a, that's a tough combo right there. It becomes pretty clear what the Blue J saw and Soriano and making that trade and, and, and going to use him further down the road. They've also had a resurgent Max Scherzer, who I'll be writing about today in my article, because he pitched really well last time out. He gets seven strong innings against Seattle, struck out 10. You always know when Max is back and when he's pitching well,

6:25but there's a playoff spot on the line somewhere, because that's when he seems to really come forward. Now, he could lay an absolute egg the next time out. But the fact that they have him and don't sleep on Spencer Erigetti either, you know, he's there as well. They have some some pieces there. James and Tyone, I don't know about that. But I mean, I think they have a rotation there that could cause from trouble. And you wrote this week about Treyis Savage, who's on the comeback trail as well. So he's about close to coming back too, right? Yeah, I could see him maybe back for the last two weeks or so. If that, I don't know if he'll be at a full, starting pitcher's workload, but they do have options, which is good. Like he said, and I mean, like he said, it was vintage shurs or this week. And if he can provide three or four innings at a time, and if Tyon can come in and out and maybe do something, they've got some potential here. And it's just it might be too little too late, but I like your call here.

7:25Yeah, I did just they have a 37% chance right now, according to fan graphs with making the playoffs. And that's a team that I would not want to play in the playoffs. I think that they're scary because of their experience and their veteran leadership that they have there. And also the top two in that rotation are pretty nasty. You'd be in an inferrified there. So yeah, so we Pittsburgh and Toronto were the teams that we picked there. Pittsburgh did win last night, one to nothing. Jared Jones, wow. Fantastic game. Glad I hung on to him in my homely day. Remember last week I was thinking about Jettison in him and Jettison in him. And you told me to hang on. And so I did and he's been really good. Yeah, he's he's been inconsistent at times, but he's he's got the potential to do it. So I don't know. Maybe he can continue. So Dave transferring over to our beat writer articles, you know, I'm picking up on a pattern here that you have. And the pattern is this folks folks for those of you who are maybe not picking up on the pattern.

8:27There's always at least one of these articles that Dave puts in that is meant to irritate me. And Dave is such a nice guy that he would never say that out loud, but he's got a little devilish look in his eye right now as he's sipping his coffee quietly and looking innocent. I don't know. Because he put an article in this week folks from the Orioles, Jake Rill, friend of the program. We've had him on the show when we were doing the other podcast last year, right? When we were a little bit different set up than what we are now. And Jake Rill wrote about Luis Robert Jr. And how excited he is to join the Orioles. Dave. Yeah, you're such an irritant. People can't see you right now, but I can. And there's like this shaft of sunlight that's like driving right through your head right now. It's making me feel the same way like Dave's hat on arms getting. I know it would never be with you. It's this one panel that I can't shut. The whole time.

9:27It's like that I have God is shining down on your face. It's like putting this article in. Getting back to the article. It actually was a good article. And I'm going to tell you, and I'm going to tell all the folks that are listening. I took an objective view to this. I read it through as if I weren't a fan of the white socks. And we'll think somebody who had watched Luis Robert play for a long time. Tell us a little bit about what that article summarized. And then I have a couple of things I'd like to say about it as well. All right, so the article is called Luis Robert excited to join the O's and eager to contribute to the postseason push by Jake Rill. And I did put it here because I do have a question. I want to ask you about it, but we'll get to that in a minute. So really the article just talks about his history saying that, you know, he was with six years with the cut, uh, sorry, with the white socks, a half season in New York. And how this is the first time where he'll be switching teams midseason. So it's a weird emotions for him and it's something new for him.

10:29But he is excited. He said he's very excited to be in Baltimore and looking forward to helping a team maybe make it to the postseason. So since he's gotten there, he's done okay. He's played anywhere that they've asked him. He was playing in left field and that's actually a big issue in Camden, Yards because there's more, um, you know, like with the fence and everything like that. It's important to play there. He's likely to play every single day. However, the biggest thing over his career has just been his health. It's kept him off the field over his career and he made note of that himself in the article saying that this has always been an issue for him. He just can't seem to stay on the field. Since August 21st, he's hitting 244 with four home runs. What's interesting about him since then and this season, he's not really running a lot. I think he has two stolen bases, but just two attempts. Whereas in the past, people would be drafting him because, um,

11:31he would, uh, he would, he would run. He would be a borderline five category contributor. I don't know if he's stopping because, you know, it's, it was the met's and now the Orioles or if it's because of his age or it's because of his injuries. Regardless, he's likely to play every day and there is talent there. So I think he'd be somebody worth picking up for at least this month if you really need somebody in the outfield. My question is to you though. Number one, who was the better pickup for the Orioles? Um, CES or Robert? And number two, if you could paint the perfect off season for Robert here, what would it be? Well, CES and Robert I think kind of share a similar quality and that they can get hot for a period of time, but they're really probably not anybody that's going to carry your team for a long period of time anymore. They, they've got that power that they can go in small doses on.

12:35They've got a lot of ability to be able to do those types of things, but I would say that Robert is probably the better pickup here. Um, I've, I've given this a lot of thought and I'm being serious. I'm not just messing around on this, you know, um, it's hard for me to be objective about guys that were on that White Sacks team that was supposed to get them to the next level because none of them ended up handing out. Yeah. And the various levels of career, but flame outs essentially all told everywhere. I had an interesting experience with my son a couple of weeks ago. We went to, um, the White Sacks and Met's game. It was the game where Peter is hit the walkoff in the ninth inning off of Senga to win the game. And Robert was playing left field and he was right in front of us. And Jack was just gazing at him for a long time. And Jack had seen him play in the playoffs in 21. I had taken him to a playoff game when the, when the socks were there courtesy of my brother who was able to help us get tickets in there. And, uh, he just looked at him and he said, Dad, what happened to him? And I said, what do you mean? He's like, well, he's, his body is incredible.

13:39Like he looks, he looks like he should be able to do anything. And that's the thing about Robert. He has the skills. He has, he has everything that you would want in a five-tool player. He runs, he can hit, he can hit for power. He's a great glove. He can throw. He, he has all the tools there. And that leads you to wonder what, what is the problem here? I mean, obviously injuries have been an issue. They've largely always been soft tissue issue injuries. Yeah. Um, those have continued since he left Chicago. And so you have to kind of wonder if there is, um, uh, if this guy ends up becoming a platoon bat, if he is a guy that plays three or four days a week to preserve his legs and see if you can kind of recapture that magic, I don't think at age 30 next year he goes into it and you'd be like, wow, I'm penciling in Luis Robert to play 150 games because if you, if you pencil him in to do that, he's never done it. The most games he's ever played in a, in a season is 145. So there, there could be value there. But I think what you're going to find

14:43is that Robert will be the type of guy like CES that we were just talking about. Wave for wire gets hot, pick him up first stretch and then stamp him back down to the wave for wire. Um, I just don't, I don't see, um, the power right now looks like it's more real than the speed, which is a total opposite situation of what we were just talking about. You know, you had mentioned the speed. He had three seasons in a row where he stole over 20 bases, even with the injuries, even only playing a 100, 110 games, you know, and so he was kind of seeming to be that guy who was going to hit 14 to 15 home runs and then steal 30 bases, which would still be usable in a fantasy format, even with a 2 30, 240 batting average. I do think his best days are behind him and I do think though that he could provide value in the right situation. Like if he went to a team where he didn't have to play every day where they could rest his legs once or twice a week, I, you have to wonder if some of this with him is mental. Just the, the nagging injuries that have come up, uh, just draining his ability, draining his spirit, maybe to play a little bit. He's never struck me as a type of guy who

15:47is just dying to be able to get on the field. And the White South have a bunch of guys right now that that are like that. And, and, and I know that's my own prejudice against that because I really like to see guys that are grinders and hustle and play a little bit dinged up like those guys are right now. Robert won't do any of those things and I think it's pretty clear to say that I think it's fair to say that, you know, if he, if he feels off at all, he's not going to play that day. It's, it's funny that you mentioned the mental part because I was going to make a comparison to Byron Buston, but I don't think Byron Buston is in the same mental state as Louise Robert. No, I was going to make the physical comparison how, you know, he struggled with injuries throughout the years. And once he was healthy in an off season, that's when it all took off before last year that he was able to focus solely on his game and not have to focus on rehabbing and, you know, getting better. But the, yes, the mental part of it, that's the biggest, that's, that's huge and that's something you just can't, I guess you could teach, you could help, but you can't really, you're, you're just born with it. And

16:48if he can't overcome these mental hurdles of, you know, exerting himself or I don't even know what it is, but it's, it's, it's, it's something that's completely different. I think from Byron Buston, who's just in all out go getter, who feels like he's doing everything he needs to do to stay on the field, whereas I don't know if the love and the passion of the game either for Robert is there. And I think that might be the big difference. I'm glad you made that point about Buston because all of Buston's injuries come from playing. Yeah. These aren't like stretching issues or, or anything like that. I mean, the guy plays against Arizona fire, you know, running into walls. He can't stop himself. He's got the fire to be able to do that. Now, you don't want to see that rune is career either, but I think with Lubob, it really is more of the, the mental piece of it of, of being ready to play every day and how that goes. I do think that there's a lot to be said for that. And that's probably something we will continue to talk about over the winter, but a situation that I,

17:49I was looking at the teams this morning, I was thinking, where would he go that would be a good fit for him? How about a situation like Kansas City? He needs to play in a small market. He needs to be in a place where he's not under constant media scrutiny. And he's going to be Chicago and New York are markets that will eat you up, right? He's not cut out for that. If he could go play in a place where he could play 120 games in relative obscurity, you know, you might see a little bit of a bounce back, you know, the, the royals could do a situation. They're always looking for outfield help. They could stick him in a corner outfield and some type of a, you know, half platoon or whatever, or maybe put him in center with his bell and, you know, rotate them around a little bit and see how that goes. But to me, that's a place where it seems like it would be a good spot for him to land this offseason on a, obviously a smaller deal. He's got a lot of proving to deal. I don't know if he's going to feel that way. I also think about it from the standpoint, Dave, too, of like, I've never known what it's like to be gifted, like physically gifted, like what he is. Can you imagine, like when it's come so easy for you and then all of a sudden it gets hard, how difficult that

18:52must be for a player? Tim Anderson talked about that in his retirement ceremony, right? Like, you know, he was a natural athlete, but he wasn't able, none of those guys on the white socks. I'll just stay at it. And I've said it before. I have no shame in saying it. They all lack the mental acumen to adjust to, to, to when they started to struggle, how they were going to adapt. You know, the, the top of the pops for them was the corn game in Iowa, right? When they blew into play to the field of dreams, that was the pinnacle of what they were able to do. They, and they never did more than that. You know, they got to the playoffs and they got annihilated by the Estros, you know? Like, it's just a, it's a tough reminder that baseball is as much mental in the grind of it on an ideally basis, especially now when we're in September. And you got guys that are playing with jam fingers and twisted ankles and big bruises on their feet from foul and balls off of them. And arms are tired. That it really does require a lot of mental acumen, just as much as physical, to be successful. I think your call of going to Kansas City is perfect because I think a small market team would do well. And thinking back to that White Sox team, it's just amazing that in 2021,

19:59they did so well, but they had so many players with so many off the field issues. Oh my god. Yes, it just, their pinnacle, like you said, was then and then it just tailed down and it's got to be refreshing as a White Sox fan just to see a rebuild done right and they finally recovered from it. Yeah, it looks like they're, it looks like they're going in the right direction. So I think, you know, remind me one of these shows I want you to do a deep dive with me on Luis Castillo because I think I know how to fix him. Okay. Yeah, let's do it. Move that some other time. Okay, moving on, moving on. I wasn't too bad. I wasn't too nasty towards Luis Robert. No, you were very nice, very objective there. I, I, I, I approve. Yeah, the guys in the bubble and the bloom discord were egging me on to go for it because I told him that you were setting me up with a, with a Luis Robert article, they're like, Caleb, go after him. I'm like, no, okay. The next one day was actually two

20:59articles together by Adam Barry talking about Freddie Peralta. And what a feel good story it is for him to go to Tampa and be successful. What did you find in those articles? Yeah, these are both Adam Barry and you can look them up. They're both about Freddie Peralta before and after his start this week. And it was really informative. And it actually opened my eyes to what's really happening here with Peralta. He said on record that he struggled in New York with the adjustments that the Mets wanted him to make. That's huge because the Mets wanted him to do certain things that he wasn't either capable of doing or he wasn't willing to do. But I took it more as he tried to do whatever it was and he wasn't able to do it. And that's why he was struggling. He said it wasn't because of the extra pressure being in a big market like New York. But he was mentally weighed down by his lack of production there. He tried to work better and feel better. And he felt good physically. So he was at the peak of his physical health, but he just couldn't make the adjustments.

22:04Came to Tampa Bay and what they did was they tweaked his release point, regained his extension and he adopted the way that Tampa Bay of throwing the change up more. And he also wanted, they added more Velo on his fastball. And it was great and look at him now. And I think that's really telling. And that's something I'm going to keep in the back of my head is that we, I mean, look at the raise and the brewers. We've talked earlier this year about the brewers, about how good they were to know what they have in somebody, find their strengths and tailor what they want towards those strengths. I consider Tampa to be in the upper echelon of that as well. And this opened my eyes to that. And it kind of slowed me back as to what the meds are actually doing there to have a picture as talented as Freddie Peralta come in and be unable to do what you need to do with him.

23:04Really opens my eyes. They could be all well and done with their rookies and their prospects and developing them that way. But when free agents come over, I might take a little step back in the future. Regardless, I got off track there. The whole point is I'm, my faith is back with Freddie Peralta. I really like what they've done. And I think he's a free agent this year. And I hope that maybe he understands that Tampa really likes him and they're good for each other. Maybe they can work on some of a home, home park discount there. And that he can stay there for a long time. Because I think he could be a staple for them for years to come. Well, the White Sacks are also going to be looking for top of the rotation help. And I know that they've always been interested in Freddie Peralta in the rumor mill. But what he's done is is really remarkable in Tampa. You make a really key point though that I wanted to just expand upon for further thought. And we won't go into grave detail

24:06on it here because we've got a show to get to. But organizations that insist on their way of pitching, I think that that's going to become a pass a thing. Because if you have a guy like Freddie Peralta, why on earth would you say, yeah, this is what you did really well in the walk, but we want you to do this. Like, does that make any sense? Why would you not do what a pitcher does? Well, and that's where Tampa excels. Tampa excels and getting guys back to a reset point quickly. And they'll say, hey, we have video of when you were really going well. This is what you were doing. This is what we're going to try. So he's doubled his change up usage since he got to Tampa. And that's absolutely crucial. Seattle is kind of going through this thing right now too, right? Therefore they're like, yeah, we're just not a change up organization. What do you, what does that mean? Like, no, you should be an organization that focuses on the five best guys that you have putting them in the irritation and letting them do what they do best. Regardless of what your philosophy is on that. I'm not saying it's a bad idea to have a philosophy, but the philosophy for me would be like, hey,

25:07let's work on command. Let's throw strikes. If we can get, if we can get, if we can get strike one, we're going to be in business way more of the time than if we don't, right? Like, that should be the philosophy. Not like, no, we don't throw sinkers here. What are you talking about? It just makes sense from any job. I mean, if you get a job at a grocery store, you're a butcher and then all of a sudden they say, we like what you did and how you cut meat. However, we want you to load up some produce for the next five weeks. It doesn't make any sense. And that's exactly what the meds from this article we're doing. And I don't know, it's just, it's baffling to me that it, that not all teams can do that. That you can't see what you have, tailor what you can do with them to their strengths. That is a show idea for winner, right? It's down. We'll organize, we'll look at some pitching organizations and figure out what they're doing or not doing. That'll be fun to do it. We should. We should do that, actually. That week, we could rank the, because I think it's

26:08helpful. I think it's helpful for when, you know, when fray agents come there and what are they going to do? Are they going to actually continue what they were doing? Are they going to redevelop somebody? Correct. Well, those are great articles, Dave. Nice, nicely done. They irritate me with Luis Robert and then celebrate with Freddie Peralta. So that was great. And we both kind of, we're looking at this article this week that Nick put out. It's a massive treasure trove of starting pitching. And we wanted to go through it for you guys today and kind of highlight some pictures, both good and bad on this playoff

27:13push. As we're all trying to, I'm assuming the reason why you're listening is because you're trying to win championships like Dave and I are. And we have to look at pitching constantly, the constant churn that is required in making these playoff pushes. And so Dave, I wanted to go through each team here. And let's pick out a couple of guys on each one that we want to talk about good and bad, starting with Arizona. And Arizona has a rotation that has been kind of on again, off again, all year, but they're in the middle of the playoff hunt themselves. Anybody here on Arizona that you're targeting down the stretch? Not really in the sense that when you look at the schedule here from Nick, it's just the matchups. They all go from about average to something that you should avoid altogether. They do have a three game set at Kansas City, which projected right now is at Water Rodriguez, Soroka and Galen. But I don't know how much I trust any of those pitchers.

28:14Although I do trust Rodriguez somewhat, but I don't know if I believe what he's doing. But overall throughout the end of the season, it doesn't look like they have great matchups. So if you're streaming somebody from the Diamondbacks, it could be hit or miss. Yeah, you know, the thing about FOT that's really kind of concerning is the strikeout rate is really low, even though he's been great. And so he's got matchups coming though with Philadelphia at Houston. I don't like anybody pitching there anymore. Tepsets, New York, if you might want to avoid altogether. Although I will throw this out there, a guy that I veer marked, I have him in my dynasty league that could be a good pitcher next year's cold drink. Watch what he does over the winter folks and see what he ends up becoming. Shifting over to the athletics, Dave, they've got some talent in their rotation. Is there anybody there? I mean, I know how much you love Jeffrey Springs. That's a joke. Anybody there that you're looking at? I like Jacob Lopez here quite honestly. Yeah, Lopez right now is looking like he did last year when he was healthy. And I think that's

29:16really key to what's been happening with him. The athletics have some nice matchups coming up. They're at Texas, they're at Tampa, they're taking on the Angels, they're at Seattle versus Houston. There's a lot of potential here. The talent might not necessarily be as stable as you want, but there's a really good chance here for guys like Gage Jump, JTKin, and Jacob Lopez to really take off here. So if you're looking down the stretch, I would try and avoid home games, but on the road, most of these are good looking, sorry, they're looking like good matchups for the A's. I agree with you. I would stay away from them at home, but Lopez, since the Oster break, guys, nine games started, two wins, two 36 ERA, one or nine whip, but here's what really caught my eye, 60 strikeouts and 49 innings. And in this first half, he had 43 strikeouts and 55 innings with a

30:17683 ERA. So he's made some changes there. I do like Lopez looking at him down the road there. I do like JTKin the way that he pitches, but he feels a little volatile to me. And not somebody that I would be going after. He's got Seattle twice though, and his next three starts. So that's somebody that you might think about, although a little scarier, but maybe a good streamer. Atlanta, Atlanta's got kind of a interesting rotation, right? In terms of, you know, there's Chris sale and then a host of other characters that are there. Anybody there besides, obviously, sale, you're not going to bench sale at this point. Yeah, it's funny. Their better pitchers have the worst matchups down the stretch. It looks like, but you're not benching Chris sale. And honestly, Tyler Malley's been really good and really good to tough matchups, but I'd probably run him out there if you really need somebody. But guys like AJ Smith, Shaw, Vroom, Grant Holmes, they have two or three good matchups at Washington versus Tampa and versus Cincinnati. So those

31:22are some low-owned pitchers that I might take a shot on down the stretch. Yeah, I think for me, here's sale is obvious, but then Malley's got the Philadelphia two times in a row, which doesn't, I would probably avoid, but then he ends with Houston and Miami. Those would be ones that I would be willing to kind of take a shot at. Baltimore, okay, boy, this rotation, Ouch, kind of needs an overhaul. Trevor Rogers has obviously been very solid for them. Is there anybody in Baltimore that you're targeting down the stretch here? Of honestly, I don't know, honest, they're so hit or miss. Everyone's hit or miss. You never know what version of them you're going to get. They could all be good, but they might not. They're only really tough outing is versus Milwaukee. Other than that, they have a lot of good matchups coming up on paper. But like I said, they're so volatile, you could get someone great, you may not.

32:23Well, Nick said it nicely in the article, you know, guys like Bradish and Bazz, it's there. It's just a matter of can they put it together? And that's the thing that you're always concerned with those guys. I wouldn't use those guys really unless I was desperate. Brandon Young has been kind of an interesting option for me in several, several leagues this year. I don't use him every week, but he's on my bench quite a bit and I've streamed him in a few places, but he's looked a little tired, maybe tired lately. So I might be, you know, reading myself of him this weekend. Boston loves this rotation. A lot of options here. Anybody that you would jump out at you here, they have down the stretch. They've got kind of a mixed bag of opponents as well. Yeah, Jake Bennett, he's got our chance here to really potentially solidify a spot in the rotation for them next year. He's got the angels at Texas and at Tampa. So those are three dark green matchups that he's got going. Other than that, for the most part, their toughest part of the

33:29schedule since this came out is pretty much done. So there's a lot of really good or average matchups. I'd be happy rolling with any of them to be honest if you need a streamer. Yeah, you know, Toli is terrific. He's been great. Nick points out on the article, you know, you kind of hope that he doesn't fade and get tired down the stretch. Obviously, Sonny Gray is on auto. I had a lot of Rangers War as this year and I probably should have waited on that a year because he was in the first year of that free agent contract and I know better. I just thought that he would be consistent wherever he was and he's just not really in a great spot right now, but you could go, you could do a lot worse than having a Boston starter Chicago Cubs, you know, they overhauled their rotation at the trade deadline, getting clay homes in Kevin Galsman. Galsman actually has been really solid. He was great last week against Milwaukee. I think he had nine strikeouts. Anyone here and please don't say shoulder. No, although he did look good last

34:31night, but outside of this matchup against my at Miami, it's it's pink and red for the most part rest of the season. So if I'm going to be following this, I'm going to keep this in mind that these are all tough matchups for a lot of average pitchers. I might avoid them as much as I can down the stretch and look elsewhere. Yeah, Galsman, it really intrigues me right now. I'm a never-ending aga guy because I'm always afraid he's going to give up three home runs in the game that I have him and so I've not I've not had him on any of my rosters. Yeah, I took a chance last night. It actually paid off knock on wood, but it was not easy to watch. He's been really solid. Shifting over to my guys on the south side rotation. It's been full of question marks here the last couple of weeks. You know, I think Sean Burke is a set and forget right now, honestly. He's been their best guy. Anthony Kay is a streamer. I think he's going to give you six

35:35endings and strike out four or five guys. He's going to give up three or four runs. He's been pretty solid. No big huge flare ups there. Anyone else. I'm sort of interested if what you think about Davis Martin coming back. He looked okay the other night when he came back from his blister issue. He did. He looked he looked okay. I don't know how much I believe it. I just haven't believed it at all really this season. For the white socks in general, if you can make it past this week, they have some good end of the year matchups. I mean, they're at Kansas City and then home to the road Rockies to end the year. So if if you want to roll out white socks pictures that last week of the season, I think that might be a pretty good idea. I'm holding out against hope that Castio could do something down the stretch, but I think he needs a winter reset. I think I do think that he's got a fixable problem. We'll see. But Martin would be huge for them down the stretch if he could be what he was something close to what he was earlier on in the season. They were talking about him winning the Saiyong earlier and he's been stuck on nine wins since early June.

36:37You know, and he had this two week off time with this blister issue, which might have also been kind of a way to help him replenish and get refueled. So we'll see what happens. So Saps have been a great story since an addy boy, oh boy, I'll tell you I've really struggled with this rotation this year and and rostering guys off of it outside of Chase Burns. I've had I haven't had a lot of success with anybody here Dave. Anybody here that you really like? No, I'm looking here at there's a lot of red and pink for most of the season and their best matchups are average matchups and even those are against the Cubs and at Toronto, who we just said is is kind of making a late season surge. So unless I am absolutely desperate and need somebody for some volume, I'm probably avoiding anyone who plays for the Reds. Another another offseason topic. I don't understand Nick Lidolo.

37:38I think it's more of the blister this year. Just he he had setbacks while recovering from it. And it's been about two or three blisters this year. I'm going to give him the benefit of that doubt, but I'm not going to give it so much where I'm going to be pushing him up in drafts. I'm going to be trying for late draft value. Yeah, that makes sense. I just been frustrated. I thought this was the year that he was really going to kind of break out a little bit and it just hasn't happened. Cleveland, boy, kind of scare me. They're right on the White Sox tail in the American League Central. To me, Parker Messick is just he's terrific. I watched him pitch again this week. He's just got such a great feel. He feels to me like an old school like 80 style pitcher when I watch him. He's kind of this burly guy. There's a lot of strikes. Get some strikeouts, but really like pitches the contact. He just gets it in throws it gets it in throws it. Gavin Williams has been great here obviously as well. Anybody else here? I mean, any interesting buy-be or Griffin down the stretch?

38:46Maybe Griffin, even though it looks like a tough schedule. I feel like as good as Cleveland's been, it almost feels like they're still treading water and they're still they're still making something out of nothing. Gavin Williams could be a stud. The rest though, I don't know, like buy-be's hitter miss. Can't tell you didn't hitter miss. Logan Allen, did he just get sent down? I think he might have been alright. Yeah, I think he was only up for the double header yesterday Dave and then they put him back down. He's just not a guy that they can count on for much. So there's a I don't know. I don't know what to say about the Guardians. I trust their system, like I trust the rays. So you know what? I mean, you could do worse if you're going to be starting down the stretch. Also, I think of David Wells every time I see Parker Messick. That's a good comp. That's a good comp. I worry with them. There's a couple guys there. You just

39:50don't really know what you're going to get night in night out. I've had buy-be in a couple of places and there's weeks where he's terrific and then the next week he gives up seven walks. It's just something to really watch there. I have Messick in my home wing and I'm thrilled that I have him. Colorado moving right along. Nobody. I mean, they're at the White Sox. You could go Sagano, Feltener and Freeland and really just I'm kidding. The socks will hit like a 16 inch softball team on those guys. Let's go. Hopefully they'll have the division wrapped up by then. I don't think I've ever rostered a Rocky's pitcher to be honest. Other than a older. I have Gabriel Hughes on my dynasty team. Houston, bunch of guys here that I'm interested in. Yeah, you know what? What's Neskey's look great. He's somebody if I were in a dynasty league and he was out there like a deep dynasty. I would I would try and add him for cheap now and keep him for next year. Hunter Brown has a tough schedule down the stretch and I wonder if in the off season we'll find out that he's been battling. So I don't know if he plays to the talent that he's against or what like the level. But if you need someone out of everyone on this list, I'd probably go Michael Waka, but I'm not that confident in any of them. Yeah. I think I'm skipping Kansas City now. I have Cameron in my Tau Wars team and he's been hit or miss and I think you know I'm worried that they might shut him down. I mean there's no reason to continue to run him out there. Also ran in the position that they are in. Not a lot of talent there in Kansas City right now at this point. I will say that

45:10Seth Lugo always intrigues me in some ways because he knows how to pitch, but he really has got to find that velocity again. The love to see how that works out. I don't think he wants to go. And that's the problem. Yeah, but at some point, you have to be the adults in the room. I don't know if he's still playing through an injury and I think that might be something we find out later after the season. Otherwise, I'd be okay starting pretty much any of them. I mean, Shane Drowhan has been amazing and I would have thought to start him at Cincinnati and he struggled last night and it's a pink thing here. So yeah, it's good on neck and it's it's a tough place to pitch. I do like Drowhan's arsenal a lot and he's somebody that I'm also ready to about today that's on the waiver wire that would be I think a good pick up. He's got Baltimore and St. Louis to end

It's interesting in Minnesota how they have so many guys that you pull them up on the waiver wire. You're like, wow, I think I might like this guy, you know, like there's there's things to like about all the guys that are in their rotation. Zebby is the one for me that is like, you know, every time I look at him, I'm like, man, this guy

And I know he's had a couple of good starts in a row and that's probably going to lead to him being rostrated more leagues, but I'd really like to see a little bit more consistency before adding him anywhere. I think other than Ryan, I'm kind of avoiding here. The Metz, wow, they've got some, they've got some really good young pitching there, don't they? I mean, honestly, it doesn't always coalesce the way that you would like, but no one McLean is just he's been wonderful all year. I mean, kind of flying under the radar a little bit given the Metz struggles, but anybody else here, Christian Scott Thornton, I know Tong is coming up. Anybody there that you're targeting down the stretch, Dave? Looking at this schedule, I would be, I mean, I like Christian Scott. I roster him in my dynasty, Lee. He just always has that one inning where it all falls apart. So if you can get through and somehow get through that inning, you're going to be fine. And he's got at Miami versus Baltimore versus Philadelphia and then at Washington down the stretch. That's not too, too bad. But yeah, even Sean

So I mean, if you need him, I mean, they call him here a desperate desperate streamer. So if you absolutely need somebody, he's got the braves back to back. And typically when you go back to back, the pitcher does well one and the hit the batters do

56:45well for the other. And he's then he's at the Metz and then versus Milwaukee, who may or may not have already clinched the division and may not start everyone. Well, the fillies are going to be a tough out in the playoffs, man. That is a good baseball team. That is. So what do you think? They pick three of them. And then two of them will be in their bullpen. And yeah, my guess is that my guess is that they would go glizzardo santa as Wheeler and then painter Nola would be in the bullpen. That's not a bad bullpen. Right. I mean, and obviously they they need some help. They they've needed help all year and the bridge getting to the back end, right, with Durand and Krookering and Bolin. But those guys could they could really be a tough team to beat in a series. Yeah. They're not because they're not going to beat themselves and they got a bunch of veteran hitters that know exactly what they're doing. So I would love to see and there's a world where Philadelphia could win the whole thing. And I wouldn't mind that in the least. Shifting to Pittsburgh, the team that you highlighted earlier on in the in the show today, Dave. Obviously,

57:48Braxton and Ashcraft has probably been their best guy. We they've got schemes. I don't think anybody sitting schemes on the stretch. What about Chandler? What about Jared Jones? I think if you roll but then this this long you take a chance and roll with them again. I'm looking at the only reds or pinks that they have here. Sure, they do have one series at home against Milwaukee that's pink. That can be tough. However, after that, they're at home to the royals and then the the Cardinals. So at the very least, even though it's tough matchups, I don't know how tough the opposing lineups might actually be, especially with two teams that may not be playing for anything at that point. So I roll with whoever they go out there with and yeah. It's some. The Pittsburgh is a really fun team and I really like the direction that they're going in. They seems like they're really trying to build a team there that it can contend every year.

I think the only guy here that I would trust is Mize in some way shape reform. I mean, I, but I think he's also probably a bit of a streamer. I don't know that I would start him in Colorado, but he's got Washington and Miami down the stretch. Those would be games that I might start him in if I had him. Yeah. I mean, it's worked this year. So keep going with it. I just looked it up. Yeah. Musgrove's re-ad assignment. He's having more issues between starts and he doesn't know why. So I don't think he'll be back. Well, I mean, part of the problem is you're getting older and your body doesn't respond the same

Musgrove is a guy that I've had on my IEL and tout literally all year. I want to do a study about home versus road splits because this, this team, and I think it was at Texas, their home and road splits for pitching is so unbelievable this year that they, it's, there's like, their completely new pitchers when they're

I, I get that there's, you know, you know, the ins and outs of your stadium, but to be so good on at home and so bad on the road, it really baffles me. Although the only real guy you could get off the waiver wire might be Bryce Miller and I wouldn't trust him at all. Yeah, none of these guys are going to be available. I'm, I'm Kirby is really frustrated me this year. Gilbert's been great. You know, Katie Anderson's probably not available mostly, but he might be out there in some deeper league, you know, not I shouldn't say deeper leagues more shallow leagues. He might be available. Maybe he's the guy that you might take a look at, but I don't know. I, Seattle's kind of a weird, weird team to me. They feel like they should be a lot better than what they are.

It's, I mean, they they've been hitting somewhat well this week, but these are young guys coming in trying to prove themselves and once pitchers adapt to what they're doing, I think it's going to be a hot mess down the stretch. Yeah, I'm out on everybody for down the stretch except web. Rupus to, you know, sketchy for me to to bank on St. Louis. May streamers may maybe, but I don't see anybody here that I would really be taking in a risk on. Maybe Carl Leahy, he's had his moments this year. I just don't know how deep into games he'll go,

Other than that with Texas, they've got a good week coming up versus Tampa and at Seattle, but after that, it looks like a

I don't know if he's coming back or not, but I'm just saying, if they're still in the race and there's a game that he can pitch down the stretch, Evaldy might not be a bad guy to have on your IL. You know what? Honestly, maybe for the last two weeks, I think you're smoking. You're smoking. Well, it's because we've had this conversation how he's your guy. He's the guy you can't get enough of. And I'm a guy that can't get rid of, like we're polar opposites with him. So there's no security here with either of us. It's a good thing. Anybody else here that you have any interest in? Uh, if your savage comes back, I'd be in on him. But otherwise, we talked about Toronto earlier and they are who they are right now. Yeah. And then finally, last but not least, maybe least, Washington. Anybody, anybody there that you have any level of interest in Cavali at all, anything? They, uh, well, they play the, um, the angels at the end of next week. So if you want to take advantage of a week lineup there, you could do that and they're at St. Louis. Otherwise, it's hit or miss. Um, I don't think you're taking a chance on Jackson Kent anywhere. Will Dion actually hasn't been bad in relief in both relief? I just don't know the chance for him

1:08:24to get a win. Yeah. The Washington seems like they're going to be going through some, um, evaluations here these last couple of weeks. And so I'll be watching that, but there's nobody there that I'm probably going to be looking at. So that recaps all of the teams that we talked about there for playoffs on the stretch of huge shout out to Nick for all of his work doing that. Those are monstrous tasks to do. Um, and he does it better than anybody. And we're appreciative of working with the great team at Pitcher List and all the people that are there and appreciate Nick and the guys and, and, and staff there for giving us a shot to be able to continue to do the show weekend and we got despite my proclivities to hate certain players. Um, Dave, I want to talk to you and we always end with the mental health minute. And I want to make sure that we end with that because it's, it's kind of what we're known for if anything and want to make sure that we're, you know, discussing that. You had a great question that we were talking about in our group thread this week, which was how to deal with getting nervous and, and what do you do when you get nervous?

1:09:29And do you even still get nervous at, at the age that you're at? So I wanted to turn it over to you. Um, you've been pretty clear with the audience and with me over the course of time that there have been a lot of times in your life where you have felt different sets of nerves and, and have kind of learned how to navigate through that. Tell us a little bit about how you navigate being nervous. Yeah, I, and to be fair, I brought this up because my least favorite weekend of the year is Labor Day. It's my least favorite holiday. It's because I'm starting school over again. And, and let me get this out in the open. I love teaching. I love teaching with, I love little kids. I love being around them. I love, you know, just educating the young children. But it's hard for me after so much time off to go back and like I was saying earlier, you know, with the children, how, how far they've come and how we have to start over. And I do get nervous and it's, it's nerves about, you know, getting back in the swing of things.

1:10:32I get nervous for my kids too. They're going to school. My one son's starting high school. Right. He's got needs, special needs and it's, I just, is he going to make any friends? He's he going to struggle academically. And my other son, he's, it's supposed to be his last year of high school. So there's a lot on my plate right now and I, I am very nervous about it. But I'm also an overthinker and I know I've said that a lot. I, I overthink everything. And that's just something that I do. As I get older, I'm not as nervous as I used to be about everything. But when I do get nervous, the way that I tackle it and it's, I don't know if it's healthy or not and they did it today is I actually sleep. I sleep a lot. I get tired when I'm nervous. You'll see me look yawning a lot. And then I sleep this morning. I'm usually an early riser. I got up and I fell back asleep for two hours. That's awesome. I don't overeat. I actually sleep. And it's not the best way to actually tackle a problem. It's actually kind of avoiding it.

1:11:39But what I do for myself, I actually think to myself and talk to myself and remind myself that I'm going to be okay that I can handle it. I know that I'm surrounded by people and I'm, that they care for me and I'm surrounded by the experience to guide me through any problems. And I tell myself, I give myself a timeline, a reasonable timeline and I say by this time tomorrow or by this time in three days, it'll all be okay. It'll all be over. And that actually helps me get through whatever issues I'm going through. Those are wonderful techniques to use. And I do a little bit of the same thing. I don't feel like I'm an anxious person. I don't feel like I get super nervous. I've seen a lot of my life and most things that can kind of make my mind up about is what level of control do I have over something? The only control I have over anything is the the locus of control that I exert over the people that are around me and the people that are

1:12:40with me. But I can only control the things that I can actually control. And one of them is really my attitude. And my anxiety hits me in the middle of the night. I'll wake up in the middle of the night, like a lot of middle-aged guys do to go to the bathroom or to get a drink of water. And then I'm up and I'm wandering around and the thoughts start to creep in about like what's coming up that day and whether or not I have the energy and the stamina to be able to stand up to that day. I always remind myself of this simple fact. I've been alive for 53 years. I've survived every day that I've been on the planet. I will survive it no matter what happens. It's going to come I'm going to come through it. And like you said in a day or two, it'll be like what was I worried about? And it'll be kind of over and done with and we'll be moving on to the next thing. I think we're both you, alike in that we worry about the world that we leave behind for our kids. I mean you got the boys that are you know both in high school now wanted to tail and wanted to begin in. You've got a lot of things coming this year. There's a lot of events that'll be happening first and last for you with the boys this year. I've been through that before too. And the nerves that I have are you

1:13:44know what what am I leaving behind for my kids when I'm no longer here to be able to try to guide them like what is the United States going to look like in 20 years? You know I don't know if I'll be here or not but my kids will be and I worry about what kind of world we're leaving behind for them. And those are the types of things that keep me up at night. But then I look at that too and I say you know we survive. We continue to march through each day and we do the best we can with what we got. And here's the thing folks. If you find yourself having a bad day, the idea is really not to try to string too many bad days in a row together. Right? To start doing something is positive. So if you're really feeling a lot of anxiety and it waffles you for a day and you need to sit around today and put a blanket up to your neck and drink tea and hot chocolate and watch bad movie after bad movie or binge Netflix or whatever you do that's fine for a day because we all need to do that. But tomorrow, get up, go for a walk. If it's not 95% humidity outside, take a shower, do little things that help you kind of get back on the horse and rebound and those are huge tasks

1:14:48in the grand scheme of things. The world becomes a reality. Correct. That's really really well said. I know you like to leave us with a quote. Yeah. It's from the sandlot. Oh man, this is baseball. You got to stop thinking. Just have fun. And you can use that for anything really. Yeah, life is fun, right? Like we have to remember that. It's not all gloom and doom no matter what's going on around us. Find those little moments of joy and glory in the course of your day. Whatever that might be. And for me, it's usually having a cup of coffee by myself in the morning before the chaos starts. That's where my joy starts or reading through a novel like I am right now and spending some time at night getting back into my reading routine and whatnot. So those little moments of joy to fill your cup back up so that you can continue to pour for others. We're going to let you guys get going. It's been a long show.
