Welcome back to the LA Report.
3:01
Singer-songwriter Josh Groben's new album titled Cinematic
3:05
features covers of songs from movies,
3:07
like The Godfather, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and The Lion King.
3:11
And can you feel the love tonight?
3:18
That's Groben's version of Can You Feel the Love Tonight,
3:22
also featuring the gay men's chorus of Los Angeles.
3:25
Groben spoke with LAest host Julia Paskin about that song and others on the album,
3:30
and about the art education he got as a high schooler here in LA,
3:34
and Julia joins us now.
3:36
So tell us more about your conversation with Josh Groben
3:40
about this new album.
3:41
It's pretty exciting.
3:42
Yeah, so he spoke about the inspiration for it.
3:45
It was sparked by a few things,
3:46
including being asked to sing a song from The Godfather
3:50
for a tribute to director Francis Ford Coppola last year,
3:53
which he was nervous about, but it went really well.
3:55
Also a cover he did of a Dell song skyfall for the James Bond movie.
3:59
He performed that at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas
4:02
as an homage to her doing her residency there.
4:11
So he realized how much he really loved these songs
4:13
and also Groben's experience working with film composers over the years.
4:17
And he said he ended up being able to think a lot about the songs for movies
4:21
that he could put like a personal touch on.
4:23
He really does make them his own.
4:25
And if you're someone who likes to sing along with your music,
4:27
like me, you can really go ham on this one.
4:29
And he talked about him growing up here in LA
4:32
and his high school arts education too, right?
4:34
Yeah, so he went to the LA County High School for the Arts,
4:39
It's a public school that offers training in visual and performing arts.
4:42
He actually studied theater there.
4:43
And he said his teachers really helped him to come out of his shell,
4:46
connect with singing, because he was shy and struggling with academics.
4:50
And that really resonated with me too,
4:52
just how important access to the performing arts as a kid was for me.
4:55
And that actually led to Groben starting a nonprofit here in LA
4:58
called the Find Your Light Foundation
5:01
that helps to fund arts programs in K through 12 schools around the country.
5:05
And these kinds of programs are often vulnerable to budget cuts
5:08
and Groben talked about how he thinks they're more important than ever.
5:11
At a time when our humanity is being tested more than ever,
5:15
we need to be reminded of our humanity through these programs
5:18
and especially our young people learning about the beauty inside themselves
5:22
and the beauty inside others through the arts.
5:24
I can't think of a more vital time than now.
5:27
And I'll say Groben's new album cinematic is out May 8th.
5:30
That's LA's toast Julia Paskin.
