Caleb Durbin Switches to Number Five, Aiming to Revive Red Sox History

Caleb Durbin just joined the Boston Red Sox in a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers back

on February 9th.

The infielder switched his jersey number to 5 right before opening day against the Cincinnati

Reds.

He was originally slated for number 17, but made the change and is now official on the

team's roster.

Durbin wore number 21 during his time with Milwaukee.

Number 5 has a bit of history with the Red Sox, but not the glamorous kind, since no

Margarcia pair are left behind after 2004.

Since 2005, 9 other players have worn it, including Nick Ponto, R2 Way Lynn, Vaughn Grissom,

and a few more like Kike Hernandez and Kevin Piller.

None of them turned into franchise saviors or all stars.

The team handed out numbers to other newcomers too, like Andrew Monasterio with 32, Ryan

Watson at 56, Yohano Vieto in 29, and Rangers 4 is wearing 55.

No big shakeups elsewhere on the roster.

Durbin will aim to break that streak and make number 5 shine again as the Red Sox kick
