1:25Let's love! Welcome back. This is episode 547 of the NYYST Podcast. I am your host, Christian. We are presented by NYY Underground. And just about a half hour or so ago, the Yankees closed the door on a two-nutting victory over the New York Metzzi two-to-one subway series win, a five-in-one home stand.

2:26And you're thinking, hey, everything's really good except for they gained zero games in the American legies because while the Tampa Bay race played division leaders in the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves, they also went five-in-one over the last six games. So as the days are jwindling here in the 2026 regular season, the Yankees are still four games out of the first place mark in the American legies where as we've talked about all season long here on this show is how important it is for the New York Yankees to win the American legies to avoid the wild card series. And it's not just me saying that, you're seeing that kind of prevail the thoughts around the postseason right now. As the Yankees just need one more win over their last Duda Math in my head, correctly,

3:2713 games in order to clinch a postseason birth. And we all know they're going to wind up with the top wild card at the very, very least here that they might be the best team in the American leg. They might have the best 26 man roster, but they also might not get out of the American leg if they play the wild card series. They're going to go up against the Boston Red Sox in that wild card series and that's going to be a dog fight. That's going to be a slugfest. Whatever term you want to use, those teams are going to go toe to toe and beat the crap out of each other in that three games set. And as we saw last year, then the Yankees would, if they got past Boston, would have to go on the road to face a team in the American league. He said, gives them a lot of trouble and they were out in four games. So I know four games with 13 left looks daunting, but you still have those four games left against the Tampa Bay race.

4:27You can't pull the plug on this thing and say, this is a guy I need to rest. This is a guy. No, you have to push forward because that week off after the regular season ends and before the division series starts is more important than trying to get rest now here in these remaining 13 games because the Yankees path to the world series is a lot easier avoiding the wild card series and a lot easier when the American league has to run through the Bronx. Doing anything other than going full tilt to try to win the division until you're mathematically eliminated is not okay with me. Just like sitting Luis Carcillo, Jr. automatically against lefties is not okay with me. And I posted this yesterday on social media and I got a lot of pushback on it. And I don't really understand why fans would push back on this other than they're just kind of brainwashed by the YPM here at this point because we always talk about this here.

5:33How do you get to your best nine? Okay. And when you're playing a left handed pitcher, I don't know if you can necessarily get to your best nine because Ben Rice is not catching. We all know this at this point. Luis Carcillo Jr. is not playing second base at this point. We all know that. One of the three guys, either Gold Schmidt, Rice or Luis Carcillo Jr. is not going to play against a left handed pitcher. And based on what we've seen since Luis Carcillo Jr. has been here is that he's been the odd man out. And I know he's got a 244 average and a 652 OPS against lefties and that's lower than what Ben Rice does against left handed pitching. And obviously we know the killer that Paul Gold Schmidt is against lefties. But it doesn't sit right with me that when you look at this team and I ask you who the second best offensive player is in this lineup,

6:36who their biggest offensive threat is behind Aaron Judge. And you tell me Luis Carcillo Jr. And I'm telling you what Luis Carcillo Jr. And he automatically just gets put on the bench here. I don't know if there is a right answer to this question. That's why it frustrates me so much because there's times that Yankees do things and we say to ourselves, they don't have to do this. But at the same time when we look at this problem that they're having right now, they might have to do this, but I don't have to like it as well. Because okay, Garcia Jr. is their second best offensive player. So he's got to be in the lineup every day, no matter what. Well, Ben Rice has been really freaking good this year, 38 home runs and he's got a plus 700 OPS. I haven't looked at the numbers exactly, but his OPS against lefties is a lot better than Garcia Jr. So is he the guy that gets sat? You're not sitting Gold Schmidt against lefties. This is his sole purpose of being here.

7:38I just don't like the fact that God forbid the Yankees get knocked out in this wild card round. And Boston could potentially throw two lefties in that series that two thirds of the games that decide your season, your second best offensive player is not playing in. And you know, fans will tell me, well, the Yankees are using him in the right way. Or do you know what the numbers are? I know what the numbers are. I'm one guy that has evidence for feeling the way that I feel. Okay, I don't just go on social media or go on this show and spout things because I don't know what I'm talking about. I know that he added those three guys. He has the worst numbers against lefties, but I also know that he is their second best offensive player. And I can't lose a series in the post season when he's sitting 67% of the games. I know that in my heart, I'm not going to be okay with that. And you as a Yankee fan should not be okay with that as well.

8:42Now, as we sit here in the final 20 games in a season, this is the time to give Luis Garcia, Jr. A B's against lefties, let him get some run against lefties. Because then if he takes an 0 for 9 against 3 left handed pitches, then you know what? I saw it because the majority of those numbers, if not all of them are from Washington. I want to see what he does here. Maybe he can stay in against lefties a little bit longer and pop one into the short porch. I need to see this happen in the Bronx. I need to know for sure that there's a good valid reason I'm sitting my second best offensive player in the post season. And right now I don't know that. And yet it's going to bother me too saying, hey, Ben Rice is sitting in the post season.

9:43Or you're going to say, all right, we'll play both lefties. And then Paul Goultzmit is sitting against the lefty in the post season. That's going to bother me as well. But hey guys, when we talk about how poorly the Yankees are constructed, this is part of what we're talking about. You know, and then again, you get blowback and saying, well, they're not poorly constructed. You've got a platoon situation. Come October, there's no platoon situations. Your best nine got to be out there. I'm sorry. I'd rather go down and as much and again, am I circling around and talking out of both sides of my mouth, maybe. But come October, if the Yankees are losing in the wild card round, I'd rather lose with Luis Garcia on the field than Paul Goultzmit. I would. I'm sorry. I need to know that at least my, I went down with my best or maybe Ben Rice is not the

10:47hitter that Luis Garcia junior is overall. It's frustrating. It's going to be something that's going to upset a lot of people and the Yankees better hope. Not that they really care. They mean we know they don't care. They better hope that they get out of the wild card round if they sit with Luis Garcia, junior and two out of three games. And yeah, I'm going to continue to say two out of three games because I fully think it's going on three. I'd be stunned if it didn't. And the debate is going to be how did the Yankees line up their pitching in those three games. Some clapish in an article today said the respectful thing to do would be to start Garrett colon game one. He's not the Yankees best pitcher. The Yankees have the best pitcher in all the American league on their staff. That's the only answer for game one is you put the best pitcher in the entire league.

11:52The second best pitcher in all of Major League baseball because you got to give the miss his do for what he's done this year. The ball in game one of any postseason series. The real debate now for the Yankees becomes does Garry Cole get the ball in game three or do you give it to Carlos Rodón? And you guys know how big of a fan I am of Garry Cole and it hurts me to come out here and say this but today it's a legitimate conversation to have whether or not he deserves to ball in game three over Carlos Rodón who has been a hell of a lot better than Garry Cole has been over the last handful of starts here. Garry Cole has gotten his doors blown off in his last two starts. Is it time to worry? It's time to have a conversation though. That is what it's time for.

12:53Garry not Carlos Rodón deserves to ball over Garry Cole in game three. That's what it's time for. There's could be any number of reasons why Garry Cole is going through the slump, the worst of his career over his last two starts. Is it mechanical? Could it be tip and pitches? Is it a little bit of fatigue? Remember Garry Cole isn't throwing a full season in the big leagues since 2023. We're deep in the waters here in 2026 now after he was injured in 2024. Tommy John surgery in 2025 and missed the first two months here in 2026. Is that why he doesn't have the same wife on his pitches that he did earlier in the season? Whatever it is, it's not because I think the guy is washed and nor do I think anybody that think he is washed is having a rational thought in their mind right now. But it's something the Yankees have to sit there and discuss as we move forward here. Because all four of these guys are going to be in the rotation against Tampa Bay.

14:00They're all going to have a start before they hit Tampa Bay. Whether or not the Yankees are leading the division or mathematically eliminated, whatever it might be after those four games with Tampa Bay, the decision needs to be made who's getting the ball in game three. And right now it is Garrett Cole's game to lose. I think he's the front runner. He's the guy that Yankees want to give the ball to in game three. But it's his to lose and it's within the Yankees right and every fans right to question right now based on how he's pitched versus how Carl's Rodanus pitched. Whether or not he should get the ball in game three. Because Bob Clappish is like, oh, the respectful thing. Respect is out the window. And you have in once since 2009. And yeah, when they laid the 9-11, read that on Friday, who do they choose to do it? The captain of the team, obviously, the manager, again, obviously.

15:01And Garrett Cole was chosen to be the third guy there. Don't mean that. Don't think that doesn't mean something because it does. He's the senior statesman here. It doesn't mean he just automatically gets the ball in game three. If he's going over his next two stars, continue to pitch like this. And I don't know what you do with him. Maybe you try to piggyback him with Max Fried's going to be a little short. Again, you know, you got two or three starts here to build Max Fried up where he can go six or seven innings because they haven't done that yet. But again, if he's going to serve up the goal for ball like he's been in his last two starts, he's not going to be somebody you should be putting out there in a situation to piggyback Max Fried and say a game to. Now I think his next start would be against the diamond backs.

16:04That is how I think he's lined up here. Let me just let me just double check here. That's how I think it would be. So he pitched Saturday. So one, two, three, four, his day would be. Yeah, I would say I would think his day would be with the day off on Thursday. His day would be that first game in Arizona. If he gets his shit kicked in on that Friday night, that's going to be really concerning here. Two starts is one thing. Three is now a real legitimate pattern here that we have to pay attention to. And I'm already at the point where I'm willing to have a conversation. I'm not ready to take the ball from Garry Cole in game three, but what I am ready to do is to have that conversation with you. And if I'm ready to have it, you all should be ready to have it because there's nobody that loves Garry Cole more than I do except for maybe Amy Cole, okay?

17:04And I want that redemption arc for Garry Cole after game five of the World Series and not having pitched in 2025 to come back and drop his balls on the mound in a big postseason game for the Yankees. I want that for him. But if he's not one of the best three starters that the Yankees have going into October, he shouldn't get the ball just on seniority because what I want more than that redemption arc for Garry Cole. I want a redemption arc for franchise that hasn't won in 16 years. And then maybe Garry Cole in game one in the DS. Maybe that's the redemption arc there. There's a talk about it with SGR on our last episode that. You know, Garry Cole might see it as a sign of disrespect getting skipped over for game

18:04one versus game three and it might fuel him. Well, imagine if you skip him over completely in a series. And at some point, we talked about this. Well, what if you get knocked out in two games and how do you go into this long depressing winter that it's going to be with this lockout looming, dissecting every little thing the Yankees did or didn't do to not get out of the wild card series and say, well, the game three starter might or who you choose to be game one. It's going to be the biggest discussion point if you don't win this wild card series because then you say, how do you go in? How do you go down without cancel it or pitching or how do you go down without Garry Cole pitching? Well, if they go without road dawn, I mean, if they go and road down in game three and they don't make it out, it's like, then you're going to sell the same conversation as how did the Yankees lose in the postseason without starting Garry Cole in one of the games?

19:06And then it'd be because of merit. Whereas that previous discussion was based on, well, somebody's got to start in game three. And you're going to debate that forever. Well, now, Cam Schiller is as risen to the point where people have decided and you stole this coming today, if you listen to the broadcast, where people have now decided to shift their attention from saying he's the side young to saying he deserves to be in an MVP conversation. Well, I don't want to hear anything from anybody about a side young race. Okay, I don't want to hear it anymore. The guy has done more than enough to prove that he is the side young award winner in the American league. Sub two year array, 21 starts of zero to one run allowed.

20:07And the reason why this shifts now from side young to MVP and he's not going to win. I mean, the pictures have to be ungodly. And he's been close to that, but not to the point where it's really a debate. But think about where the Yankees would be, what I'll cancel it. And I want to point something out here because this is this is this is this is why I love this guy so much. So you all remember that game that he had against the Cardinals, right? We'll remember it. Everybody said, Oh, here comes a regression. Here comes a regression of Cam Schlippler. So when that game on August 3rd in three innings, he gave up four earn runs in five walks.

21:14In seven starts since then, Cam Schlippler has allowed four combined earn runs. So he heard you. He heard you say the R word. And he said, regress this bitch. Four earn runs in that game against St. Louis four combined earn runs in seven starts since then. So when people want to come out here and call them a five and fly guy, go ahead. He hears it. He leads the American league and innings pitched or he's second. I think there's I think Walker depend might be ahead of him. And then when Cam Schlipp, Cam pitches, he goes ahead of him. So he might be back in first here. Yeah, five and five. If Cam Schlippler is a five and fly guy, then everybody is a five and fly guy when you're leading the league in innings pitched. So go ahead and say that.

22:16Go ahead and give Cam Schlippler bulletin board material. I beg of you to do so. He's a guy that pitches wooden edge. He's a guy that wants you to disrespect them so he can just shove it down your throat. And I'm here for it. And we all saw the season flash before our eyes. Bo Bichette ripped one almost 112 miles an hour. And we saw Cam's hand dangling down there and looked like it caught him in the hamstring. Boone said that it probably it boarded the hand, which I mean 112 would record his pinky would have shattered the friggin thing. So hopefully he's okay. Maybe he just be a little sore. Maybe the Yankees can finagle the rotation, give him an extra day. He's still got a pitch against Tampa. Maybe he can give him an extra day in there somehow with the with the off day. The season flash before our eyes because there's no hope. There's no hope

23:26without Cam Schlippler being the ace and there's no hope without Aaron Judge getting back to being Aaron Judge. Aaron Judges looked pretty shitty at the plate since he's come back from the injured list on Tuesday. And again, thank you to the Yankees for waiting until SGR and I signed off on the last episode before making that official. Thank you for that by the way. I think that's the third time you guys have done that test this year. Spent about a third of the show talking about if not if but when judge was coming back and how that would look. And then within 20 minutes of us signing off, you decided to announce that. So thank you Yankees appreciate that. And I watch Aaron Judge and I see a guy who's timing is a little off because he's seen plenty of pitches that he should have deposited in the seats in Yankee Stadium. Plenty of them. And a

24:26healthy in the flow of the season, Aaron Judge probably has four or five home runs in the last six games. Probably does. No one how great of a hitter he is and how he normally doesn't miss some of the pitches that he's got. Am I worried on his performance so far this season since he's been back in these last six games? No, I'm not. I'm not worried about what Aaron Judge has done in these last six games. We have to understand something. He skipped a minor league rehab assignment when he did he absolutely needed one. The Yankees and Aaron Judge decided to skip the minor league rehab assignment because there was only 19 games left in the season. Okay. I don't fall either side for doing it because of the truncated time he had to get ready until the end of the season. If he even came back a month ago, he's going down to Scranner to Somerset for at least four or five games.

25:26I don't think there's any discussion in that. He needed it. He needed the reps. He needed the at bats. But because he came back when he did, they're skipping it and he looks like a guy that's still not in the flow of the season and it's not just that well, he's coming off the long injury here where he hasn't played June, July, August and part of September. It's that for the majority of that time that he was on the injured list, he couldn't do anything, not run, not throw, nothing that would put stress on the upper half of his body. So we have to take that into account when thinking about why Aaron Judge is a little off right now. It's not like, well, you know, it's a hamstring so he could hit off a tee or, you know, it's whatever injury where he can continue to do things. This dude was completely shut down for months. And then it was baby step after baby step for him to get back to playing. So yeah, it's going to take a little bit of a time

26:31time here. So he had six games. In my book, he's got six more. The Yankees need Aaron Judge back to being Aaron Judge by the time the raise hit Yankee Stadium on the 22nd. It's still going to be a long shot if the Yankees don't find a way to shave two games off this lead over to Corseter next six, which because Tampa never loses, it's probably going to be impossible. But it's not mathematically impossible. I especially with the double header, it's going to be extremely extremely tough to go out there and sweep the raise. But as long as that's on the table, you don't give up hope in the American leg east because if you sweep them, you also while only being tied on the tiebreaker. So then Tampa then has to pass you in those final three games. So while that's still on the table, that's not something I pass up on because I'm not, I'm not conceding to being the wild card. I'm just not doing it. And I don't want to see Yankee fans on social media digging

27:38at Judge because it's just stupid. We all know how valuable he is. We all have to listen to the facts in front of us. He didn't play for three and a half months and probably through two months of that three and a half months, did nothing to keep himself in shape because he couldn't because he would have risk re-entering the rib and then where would the Yankees be. So he needs a bit of a grace period here. And you've seen just him being in the lineup has made Cody Belinger a more impactful hitter. Cody's got three home runs and six games since Aaron Judges been back where his power stroke has been nonexistent since he came back from the injured list. Cody was getting his hits but not with a lot of power. All of a sudden Aaron Judges back and Cody Belinger was hitting him out of the ballpark. In my mind, that's not a coincidence.

28:38That's the Aaron Judge effect. And I like the way the lineup is constructed right now. Bryce Belinger then judge. Give me two hitters in front of judge and put your second best hitter behind judge. That's the way you construct a lineup. Like it. And we talked about this that Spencer Jones is recipe. So put him up there behind Luis Garcia Jr. to clean the plate up. And then right now you'd have to hit Lumbarred 6 to put another break in between the lefties. And then you'd go. McMahon Wells and then Volpe's point second base right now. That's the way you construct this lineup. You got three righties in there. And Volpe had that fairytale game on Thursday. The Grand Slam three hits. The Kurt and Cole.

29:40And I appreciate everybody at Yankee Stadium giving him that Kurt and Cole. He needed it. The team needed it. And it was like kind of a sign like, Hey, we don't hate you. We just need you to be better. And we recognize that this is your last opportunity here. So I appreciate that. I don't appreciate the fans booing Garrett Cole yesterday, though. It was a poor performance. I'm not going to say it's not. I'm not going to give him a pass for anything that he did yesterday. A poor performance. But give the guy a little bit of respect here for the picture that he's been and know that he's out here with the minute stuff. And I get it. Met's getting your tails blown off. You got to win every game because the rays don't lose. I get it. But booing him. Sit on your hands and keep your mouth shut. That's where I'll come to Garrett Cole's defense. He didn't deserve that yesterday. And again, with the thing about Volpe, he had that big game and

30:42it's just like quietness to last four games. Not going to shit on him. I'm not going to do that. But the Yankees needs something from Volpe offensively. That's how this offense is going to be really, really good in October. And you talk about platoons. If jazz is back for the Wildcard series, you have to platoon them. And if that means that jazz doesn't play against lefties, then jazz doesn't play against lefties because jazz chism is not the hitter that Luis Garcia Jr. is. That's why I'll fight this. I'll die on this hill of that Luis Garcia Jr. has to be in a lineup every day. And I won't and I won't die on it that say jazz has to be in the lineup every day. He's not your second best offensive player. He might be your second most dynamic offensive player, but he doesn't always realize his strong suits. Hey, all right, it's almost here. Are you ready? 33:50against their opponent in that weekend series against the diamond backs. And then you go down three where again you're you're looking at a scenario where it's sweeper to divisions over at that point because if you go in three, we'll say you split the first two. It stays three. And then you win. Oh wait a second. Let me do the math in my head here. So you win. You take three out of four. You're down three. So you split that double header. Right. So now it's still three going into the final two games of that series. You get it down to one. I don't know why I didn't do the math in my head correctly. You're down one losing the tiebreaker now at this point as well. The best case scenario I think right now and I think you'd probably have to sign for this. The best case scenario for the Yankees after that Tampa series going into those final three games against the

34:58Orioles is being down a game. And if that being down a game means that you lost one of the three games to the raise in that series. That means you're really down two games. So you have to sweep and hope that Tampa gets swept. It's daunting. So also the situation that the Yankees put themselves in. There's nothing you can do about it now. I think the Yankees all I think we all had an expectation of what the Yankees would do without judge. And I think they probably exceeded it. You know six games above 500 would add them is nothing to write home about but they also didn't crater. They also stayed right in that same spot that they were previous to him being injured. Right. And the raise kept winning. So you've got to give credit to the raise for not

36:01succeeding this division to the Yankees here. So you've got to give a lot of credit to them for what they what they've done here over the course of the regular season. It doesn't mean that I'm not going to go to bed if the Yankees don't get to the World Series and not think like what could have been if Aaron Judge was healthy this year. And what could have been is that the Yankees are going into this American League division series. The absolute lock favorites to get to the World Series this year at the American League. It just wasn't meant to be. You heard it got hurt. And they're going to most likely, more than likely here, finish in second place. Again, that doesn't mean that you take your foot off the gas. It means you keep moving forward trying to win this division until the numbers equal eliminated. This weekend five and one equals still four games out. And that's got to frustrate the hell out of the Yankees. And that's frustrating the hell out of me as a fan. They did everything

37:05that I wanted them to do this week at Yankee Stadium. Playing the Rockies was a take care of business series. There's no need to talk about what happened against the Rockies. It was a take care of business series. It didn't matter if it looked pretty, how it looked, that's the worst team in baseball win three games. They did. And then you knew the Mets were going to come in here. We're a little spunk a little fire. The anniversary of 9-11. They weren't going to be patsies to you. They didn't go away on Friday night. I'm going to excellent start from Carlos Rodón. He went out there and he was big boy Carlos on Friday night. And the Mets just hung around and hung around and hung around. And the Yankees survived the Mets on Friday. And then obviously on Saturday, Cole gives up the home run, the lendoor to start the game. And you could have really could have went about your day from there. And just going back real quick to these left-handed lineups

38:11really, right-hand lineup, the lefty lineups to face lefty pitching. Is it just me or does it always seem that the Yankees just go through these ugly, disgusting, blah offensive games when they put their right-handed bats in there? Is it just me? Am I just or I don't know. That's how I feel. They didn't really do much offensively outside of a belly, how the couple hits there and drove in a couple runs. They get embarrassed. You know, Bradley Hanner doesn't belong on a major league roster. He eats the bullet there. And I think we're expecting Clark Schmidt back on this road trip. And we never have to see Bradley Hanner again this year. And then yet today, you know, you got Cam doing Cam things, the bullpen, the top three guys all throw up zeros. They get just enough offense and they win a series. So, hey, you want it five

39:11and one, that's what they needed to do. They did it and they don't gain any ground. It's frustrating. And I really want to and not that I want to, I think this is probably the last time this name will ever be mentioned on this podcast. But you think about how legitimately great the Yankees have been all year out of both the bullpen and the starting rotation. And I can't maybe Jake Bird, but not even Jake Bird. Now you got traded in the Louis Cross, see a junior deal. Have we seen somebody be so incredibly asked this year? Now normally you can pick to it. You can pick a starting, you can pick two or three guys out of the bullpen that have just been absolute nightmares, just bad, bad pictures. I don't care how it's done, just do it. Like I said, you're facing a team in the Arizona Diamondbacks that are fighting for their playoff lives right now. At 540 on Sunday, the Diamondbacks are two games behind the San Diego Padres. They're also 79-70. They're not a pushover. You need to go in with that series. It's going to be right there. It's going to be right there for the Yankees. I don't see the Yankees being mordered for out. Come that series against Tampa. If you got to sweep, that's what you got to do.

Then after the Baltimore series ends on the 27th, which is the final game of the regular season, we're not going to record that episode until we know where the Yankees are locked into. It's going to be more of a wildcard series preview show. So 10 years of covering regular season of the Yankees is down to 1 more episode. And there will be an announcement before that Arizona episode and what I'm going to be doing next year. Because I'm not going anywhere. I want everybody to know that. I love doing this.
