Can Alberta’s industrial base coexist with its emerging AI economy?

Megan Gill says the ability to use less electricity at the right time could become increasingly valuable as Alberta adds massive, power-hungry AI data centres to its grid. As executive director of the Alberta Direct Connect Consumer Association, Gill represents some of the province’s largest industrial electricity users, including companies in forestry, pulp and paper, cement, manufacturing, and petrochemicals. She explains how those industries already respond to electricity prices and transmission costs, while identifying gaps in Alberta’s approach that could determine whether the data centre boom ultimately benefits existing industry—or drives up costs for everyone.
