Can the Cubs and White Sox bounce back? (Hour 4)

Get the job done right. The first time Bruce Levine is the score's baseball insider. And he joins us now. Good morning, Bruce. It didn't look like a dirty slide to me. How about you guys? Well, I think that it had intent.

1:01I don't think it was dirty. I think Brandon Lau sound soft. Nonetheless, it did create quite a bruja. You were there. You heard from Sam Antonaghi Postgame. We heard his explanation earlier. How did you think he handled the whole situation? I think he handled it great. And I think he's a refreshing player. He's not out to hurt anybody. But he's out to beat you. And I think when a player like that brings an attitude to a clubhouse like he does, along with his teammates, I think it's refreshing when you see the brand of baseball. He plays even on the north side. They play a hard brand of baseball. No one's out there to hurt anybody. But the game should be played in a hard way that you're trying to win. And you don't have any friends on the other side. There's way too much fraternity like atmosphere in baseball. These days, I like to know that there's just like on the other side. I like the fact that Christian Yalich hates the cubs and tries to go out there every time and beat him.

2:06I like rivalries. To me, it transcends baseball. It's football. It's basketball. I like that idea. So that's my perception of it. Maybe I'm a little prejudice because I get to watch this guy play every day. I see how much he's brought to the White Sox in the way of excellence and attitude. So that's my take. Bruce, good sign. Davis Martin, another solid start for him yesterday? Absolutely, absolutely, Jerida. He threw five really good innings. They're looking for stability in the rotation. A rotation that's thrown the fewest of any in baseball all year long. You hope that with him getting straight now, you hope that Burke comes back and pitches well again because it wasn't really good the other day. Bullpen is strong.

3:06The league is not strong. The White Sox still maintain a three game lead in the lost column. You can talk about halves and game and they have two and a half, one half. It's all about with 16, 17 games left. It's the lost column. And the White Sox are there. They just have to start winning games. I said about a week ago if the White Sox continue to play 500 baseball from that point on, they're going to be okay. Well, they haven't quite done that recently, but that's all they have to do. They have to be consistently average in the American league till when their division and go on into the playoffs. They're two up with 17 to play. They're two up on the green and the lost column. I know you say that Bruce, but like they're two up in the standings with 17 to play. Game in hand means something. I know it. I know it. You can't deny though.

4:07You say that they've lost three out of four. They're not playing very well right now. Okay, we'll agree on that. Okay, what effect does pressure? You talked about the mounting pressure as September gets older every day. You get closer to the end of the month. Do you think it's a product of that or why is this team picking this time to not play at its best? Well, I don't think, first of all, it's a good team. It's not a great team. There aren't any great teams in the American league. Point them out to me if I'm missing it. Tampa's a very good team. The Yankees are a very good team. After that, you know, point me out the great teams. The White Sacks have been in first place since July the 4th. It's a long time, right? Two months. So there's been time for teams to catch them, pass them, move by them. They haven't done it. So when you look at the White Sacks, you ask that question again. Sure there's pressure. There's pressure on every team right now.

5:09And the White Sacks have a bunch of young guys that haven't faced this type of pressure before. You have a manager that hasn't managed a team in the playoffs as of yet. I think they're handling it pretty well. Honestly, you know, the questions asked every day to multiple players. I'm one of them that asked. As you said, two days ago, I asked, well, Vennable, the same question. And I think he was pretty honest about it. Again, they're going to deal with pressure. They're going to have to fight their way through it. I think they're about an inch and a half away from us talking about a different outcome yesterday with my draw. I was lying dry with the bases loaded. You can talk about that in a lot of games, but I don't see them playing sloppy base. I don't see them making horrible mistakes. It tells you the pressure has gotten to them. If I've missed anything, let me know. They're getting beat. And they're getting beat by some better pitching. They're not scoring as many runs. The thing that came out yesterday, which is great, is you hope Murakami is starting to feel like Murakami.

6:15Because they certainly need the offense from him at the top of the order to make a good push here and finish strong. That was kind of the glaring thing other than Davis Martin last night. Where was the offense? They had chances with runners in scoring position. They just couldn't really get it done, Bruce. Yeah, you're right, Jared. They did. And they'll admit they had chances. Again, one night where Nukum, who's been one of the best relievers in the game, just didn't get it done. A lot of few runs. But you have to score more than two, right? So they weren't able to. They move on to today. I think they have a good chance, you know, to at least salvage one game from this series. And we'll see how it turns out. But I think intriguing baseball this time of year might be too exciting for you, David. I'm sorry. But it is exciting baseball and an important part of it.

7:17Bruce, stop picking on me. I'm grumpy. I did not like with the way the Cubs game ended last night. I did not like them going with the rookie instead of Carson Kelly, especially with Tyrone Taylor on the bench. Is Dustin astutely pointed out. I know you were preoccupied. You were doing your job. You were at the rate. But I'm sure you have caught up to the Cubs situation by now. What did you think of that last sequence? And how big of a rut are the Cubs stuck in? Look, you're down. How many runs going into the ninth, right? Eight to one. It's a hail of Mary, isn't it? I mean, they hadn't brought on their top reliever. Sprout was probably the worst pitch on the team with all due respect. So there was a point where people were saying it's seven and nothing. And the brewers in the fourth inning were bunting and stealing. They tried to steal a base. People were saying you're piling on. You don't think there's anything. Such thing is piling on in baseball.

8:18The Cubs made a valiant effort to come back. They almost did. I guess you can nick pit on the usage of the players right there. That game was lost really early by a good starting pitcher. He had a bad night and the brewers had a really good plan against them. But the brewers are their 10 games ahead. I mean, we're back to two years ago when they finished 10 games ahead of the Cubs. So they're no longer in the equation into the playoffs. It's now about the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres watching them. Certainly Philadelphia as to where you end up. And hopefully you do end up because you only have a couple game lead on San Diego. Two and a half or three on Arizona. You know, it's going to be tough. They're going to have to play a good baseball here in the end of last 15 games. Bruce, that's a pretty graceful way to give Craig Consul pass. I didn't even see your arms move.

9:22Nobody gets the passes. Tell me you're do they know I mean so how nobody it was eight to six Bruce PCA was on deck. I don't care how far back they came or who was on the mount. They had a chance to tie the game extend the game, one at bat. And they went to BJ Murray in that situation. A playoff atmosphere. It's a lot to ask of a rookie with one major league hit. The game yesterday was a playoff atmosphere for one team. That was the brewers who clobbered them in the early innings and made it. Made it pretty much a joke out of the game until the Cubs decided to rally and make a game of it late. But honestly, they were beaten early. They were swept in a series that they had a sweep. And you have to move on. Everything isn't going great for them right now. Certainly you had no discovery last night on the bullpen.

10:24There was no discovery to be had in a blood game until the ninth inning. So again, that's going to be the major challenge here. You hope that a Gosman had just a bad one here. You hope that homes is back to having a better start the next time out. There's always there's never that reminder in the visiting teams clubhouse store. And there's never a sign saying you are expected to lose today. Right? The Cubs fans and the Saxons are expecting you to lose. So please cooperate. Thank you management. I'm going to pick you back off of David's question Bruce because we were having this discussion earlier in the show. I mean, the numbers everybody is hijacked by the numbers and handcuffed by the numbers. Do you would you if you were making that decision would you go by the numbers or the experience of a guy in the night? Yes. Just in that making that BJ Murray switch right there and taking out Carson Kelly.

11:24Do you go with the numbers or go with the experience? I mean, it's you know, it's it's crying in your beer. It's just it's it's it's such a waste of energy to talk about that. Isn't it? I mean, it's it's we're all here for four and a half hours a day Bruce. We do a show every Saturday for two hours. David, I absolutely not. It's not a waste of time. I apologize. I apologize. But you know, nitpicking that, you know, it's really not the point. Okay. It's not the point of the game. That blown out. Okay. They they lost a series. Come here are the numbers you really worry about in games. There are last 21 games. They've had the lead in ten of them and lost them, right? Those are those are the numbers you worry about because the pitching has not been good enough. We know it's a it's a really good offensive team. We know it's a great defensive team. We know there's a lot of heart in the team.

12:24Now, without pitching at the end of the game, none of that is really going to matter. And they have to get that straightened out. Are you going to have a power like Palencia at the end of the game now? Are you going to have a side who's up who's a ground ball pitcher at the end of the game now? Which way does Craig Council go to get his outs? You know, the one thing that's interesting I'm going to talk to him about this tomorrow. He's never used any of the terms set up man or closer in the entire year. He doesn't have that in his vocabulary. It's it's fascinating because he his mind doesn't work in the way of you have this role and you have to get it done. Now, when he had Hader with Milwaukee, he had a closer because he struck out two out of every three hitters. They don't have that luxury with the cups. So, Outgitters is his term for, hey, do your job when you go in there.

13:24We expect you to get out. But he has his fingers behind his back cross just like everybody else right now. All right. Well, he needs to get some outgitters up from Iowa. We talked about Shelby Miller yesterday. But on Wednesday, Edward Cabrera came out of the pen for two innings and he hit a hundred miles per hour or a hundred MPH as Pat Hughes would say. And look pretty sharp. He gave a one-on-run. He had a strike out. And I wonder Bruce, by the time that the Cubs all get back to Rigglyfield to play the Pirates on Friday afternoon, will Edward Cabrera be in that bullpen getting outs for Craig Council? You know, David, it's a great point. Normally, this time you don't talk about experiments. And when Council was asked about whether there were help is at AAA two days ago, he said no. But right now, you try anything. If you've got a power arm and you think it's a possibility that he can go in there and blow people away. Because the one element that the Cubs don't have at the end of the game, the other team, is due.

14:29And that is power arms just strike people out rather than the ball in play. You're hoping with a slider or a change up, the answer is sometimes at the end of the game with three outs left is 98 plus and striking people out. So when it comes to him or Polencia, I think you have to try. You know, again, it's experimental with two weeks left. But they're in a situation where they have to establish some people at the back end. I know one thing, Craig Council is not afraid to try. And he will, if he has to, here this week. Well, Vennable had the only questionable move that he made yesterday. I thought it was strange and we ask Ozzy about it.

15:29Andrew Ben and Tendi was a designated hitter from the left side against the right hand. We know that. Miguel Vargas started the day on the bench. Ends up with three at bats, but he started the day being rested in the midst of a very important stretch of the White Sox season. I was surprised that was the case and I did scrutinize that decision, second guess it maybe. But that's kind of part of the deal, right? When you're the manager, yes, you open yourself up to that by every decision that you make. When it's good, we praise it, when it's bad, we criticize it. And Bruce's fuzzy math just doesn't add up to me. Yes, they were down eight to one. But when they're down eight to six, all of a sudden in your head, it's a two-nothing game. It's changed. It's a two-nothing game. Let's go. We got a two-nothing game with a runner on second. What would you do with Picro Armstrong on deck? You would want to get any of the best chance possible getting on base or advancing the inning.

16:30I need my guy up. Home run was coming. That's what David said. Is Cabrera an option on Friday? You think Cabrera makes sense, Dustin. Do you think that he is somebody that you would like to see in a Cub uniform Friday? Well, it would make no sense for him to throw another pitch outside of the Big League team. But right after last night, there's no reason they did the whole up-down thing I'm assuming and all that other jazz. Real life isn't that what we heard from Tommy Hottieby yesterday, right, with Taylor McGregor. We heard real life. We can do all the side stuff. We can do all the bullpen. We can all do that. But you've got to get in there in a real live game action and get the job done. Let's hear from Tommy to Taylor McGregor on the marquee sports network talking about the Cub Bullpen. What have you guys identified and what are the things you're working on to improve? It's an execution thing. It's a delivery thing that you're just not able to repeat at the level you were or need to be. I think for Webby, it's actually about just simplifying things.

17:30I think when he got on the run that he went on, it was very simple approach. It was executing away, going in on hitters when he needed to and trusting his outer lane strengths. And when he's right and mechanically right, like everything, he can execute at that at a high clip. And I think for him, it's just about not making the moments bigger than they are, right? We all feel it. We're in that part of the season where every game feels like it means more than the game before. And the moments big and these games feel like playoff games. So I actually love that our guys are going through this right now and feeling it right now because it's only going to make us that much better for when the post season happens. And we're in those big moments. We're battle tested. We're ready for anything. I love Tommy. He almost makes it sound like it's enjoyable to go through what the cup is going through right now. He almost makes it a bullpened cry to sound like something you want to be a part of. I love it because everybody else is frustrated right now. They're concerned.

18:31But he does the way that he speaks just makes you feel like he's just a little bit. Show the pitches tomorrow. Show the Friday afternoon. They were good. They game. Are you think? Yeah. Because the splits are favorable to show the day. Dustin and I had that conversation yesterday. Yeah, he's better. He's better during the day. He's got about that. Listen, he was last time out. He was good, right? The haircut, superstition. The haircut worked. I got him in my power rankings. He's ascended. I think the home, the home, giving up the home runs is gone to to Gosman now. So I think he's good. I think he's going to be okay. That's that power you want to transfer. You don't really want to do that. It doesn't have to nobody. You don't need a pitcher to giving up three home runs. So after, after what showed it did last week. Yeah. Is Shoda making the wild card round assuming the cups playing that? Is he on the on the wild card roster? Wild card playoff roster? Yes. Yes. I think he is. I think Shoda the money. I think that he is.

19:33Definitely. He was show to time. He might be, he might be, but can you come out of the bullpen or would you have him as an opener? I don't know. That would be a good, that'd be a good question because you're not going to be playing day games. Who, who was more likely to be in the bullpen? Shota or Javier Assad? Javier Assad. Yeah. Why? Well, because he's more accustomed to coming out of the bullpen. Okay. But he's not a swing and miss. He's not a swing and miss get. But he's a guy that you want. That's a good question, but I think because Shoda is primarily a starter and doesn't have a lot of experience in relief. You might look at it that way. But if we have Tommy, how do we next week? 20:35Hot and Peyton in the mornings on 1043 the score. No one's really on board that the bears are going to be absolute dominant. I mean, they had flash season. But like you said, all of them, it was a magical season. Like magical seasons don't happen two years and a roll like that. But the only way the bears would be able to make it is that they take away that magic and they show that they don't need that magic. They stepped it up. Say, Caleb Williams became a better quarterback. You know, they became a better team. And they don't need that magic to, you know, pull out of the hat to pull a rabbit out of the hat in the fourth quarter to win the games. They can show that they're dominant consistent throughout the whole entire game, the whole entire four quarters. That was the problem with them last year. They're inconsistency, but then point out magic, you know, in the last couple minutes. That's not going to happen again. They got to show that they can play all four quarters every single game and win on a daily basis like that. Welcome back. It's hot page. Chicago sports radio 1043 the score. 21:40who weighing in on the bears on the up and atoms, K atoms podcast. And Jarrett, not everybody is going to be on board with the bears. Like three of the four of us yesterday picked them to get to the NSC championship game to win double digit games this season. Rob Grang Kowski represents a faction of people outside of Chicago. Maybe the fan base that expects a regression. That's not to be dismissed because I think it's out there. How relevant. How valid do you think that is in terms of looking at the bears outside of Chicago and expecting that kind of season? He's got valid points. I think we all feel that way. I think we're all thinking we live. We live it. We're here. So we're experiencing a different way. And so we're looking at that we that we're believing that Caleb is going to take that next step. This offense is going to be a little bit more fluid in the first three quarters of the game.

22:42And that you have a lot of confidence in Ben Johnson as well as a head coach to be able to steer this whole thing in offensively some of the new schemes and some of the new wrinkles he's going to throw is going to be beneficial for this ball club. The only thing I have an issue with. I love hearing Grogg talk about the bears but he needs to worry about his Patriots. His Patriots they they need to show up. So worry about home team first before you start talking about our team. A15 texts in ground ground sounds cranky someone refilled his apple juice. And and also to your point in other text every team is a candidate for regression. And he I guess he can say the same thing about the Patriots. Yeah, it is we know that we can and we count in the NFL. It is tough. It is hard. And what you did last year. That is not going to I mean it's not going to happen more likely that's why every single year guys have to be able to step up.

23:44Well, I think it's a good reminder though that you know you want to have optimism because it's before the season and you've had an injury already you've had a training camp full of health issues but you still have the optimism that opening week brings a week one presents. At the same time you you look at that you don't want to get carried away and be blinded by that that you don't see some of the flaws that are right in front of you. I do. I see the first this defense is shaky is got flaws it we still have a lot of question marks that need to be answered. But I'm here for all that offensively I think it's hard because you see the weapons that are there and you know that you throughout this summer that Caleb has been progressing in the in the right direction that this offense has to be better. It has to and grunk is not on an island necessarily grunk is out there with a pinniness who actually like Bill Barnwell who's highly respected and work right for ESPN and he wrote on ESPN.

24:53Well have that a good reminder of the fact that you know that there's a lot more important to be able to go out and get the right to come. Yesterday that the bears would miss the playoffs so that. It's out there and grunk also alluded to the fact that you know last year they had seven fourth quarter comebacks and they came through in the clutch and maybe that's not something you can count on two seasons in a row. clutch change, you got to be a perfectionist. You know, the last throughout your whole career, when you saw Tom Brady go down the field, it was being, you know, perfect, whatever you think, hey, the right guy, it wasn't throwing the ball out there after running 30 yards backwards and hoping America happens and someone comes down with it. I mean, it was great football, the watch, there was a lot of fun, but to have that consistency, you got to be a drill sergeant, you know, in the fourth quarter like Brady was. He would go down. I mean, everyone was covered. Boom. He would give five yards. Boom, slant, round five yards. First down the check it to a run plate, check it to a draw to the running back. Boom, eight yards.

25:53So being surgical like that is what makes a quarterback clutch and have that clutch gene and that boom hitting the deep guy when it's open, but not forcing it and waiting for that opportunity. That's what Brady was. I mean, yes, you know, okay, Williams had a lot of clutch genes last year, but like we said, a lot of it was magical. Can he, can he be a drill sergeant? That's how you stay consistent and that's how you become great. Rob Grunkowski, Groc, talking about the bears and the clutch gene. I'm so glad that he was wordy there that he went on a little bit, take the people behind the glass here. How interested are we in Rams 49ers in Australia? What are you looking for the most? Because Aaron Donald is not going to play. That was what I was going to say. I was looking forward to Aaron Donald back for the Rams. Now I'm like, all right, let's see what Miles Garrett has. How does he look in a Rams uniform? Yeah, I'm looking at that defense and how stout they can actually be. I'm excited about that. I'm going to see how they stopped at 49ers offense. And probably they'll play both quarterbacks. I think that's what is highlighted from me from last night was to be able to see how these quarterbacks kind of start the season. And can we see some real solid play from both those guys tonight? Matthew Stafford is 38 years old. Certainly coming off an MVP season.

30:01But if the Rams are as good as everybody anticipates when he plays in the Super Bowl, if he gets that far, he will be 39 years old. I'm not sure there's been a quarterback or Tom Brady won at that age, but it would be a rare feat for a 39 year old quarterback to win the Super Bowl. And to get through the season, he's had some back problems as well. So can he get through the season healthy? As you get older, every single hit, every single tackle hurts just a little bit more. And they have weapons. They have one of the best receiving cores or tandems in the NFL. They've got a good running game. But I think everyone, when they watch the Rams are going to be more impressed and move by their defense. They won't have Donald tonight. They will have Miles Garrett. Trent McDuffy joins a secondary that needed the help. So you look at that group and there is complete as any team in the NFL. And that's why they are odds on favorite to win the championship. But I think that when you look at the factors tonight or tomorrow morning, depending on how

31:06you want to look at this game, because it'll be kicked off what, 10 30 Australian time? Yeah, like 10 34 or something. 10 30 technical 10 34 Friday morning. We've got it right here. Right here on the score. It will be you can listen to it. And it will be tonight with coverage beginning at seven kickoff at 7 35 right here on one 4 3, the score. I just don't know how those factors will affect the game, the performance. It's a seasonal but a fluky things happen, which to me is a shame because it is a division game and it's also going to be a game with playoff implications in terms of seating. And it's going to be kind of fluky. Yeah, they're both team, but both teams have to deal with it. And I think that's the hard part is when you play these type of games, you and I had the conversation. It's not a lot of data on how this all plays out for the travel and wins the right time to get over there. But you got to strap up the head, the helmet and go out there and play.

32:09That's what it comes down to. Do you believe that the 49ers are a playoff team? Did you have them making the playoffs? Because that's the, yeah, I have that stuff. Why the Seahawks cannot be ruled out. That defense. Still, regardless of the quarterback. I think I had them in the wildcard if I'm not mistaken yesterday. There's a lot of stuff that's happened between yesterday and right now. Just would think about my picks. But yeah, I mean, you know, one of my favorite running backs, Christian McCaffrey is amazing. So what he's able to do, not just running the football, but also outside in the passing game and how they use him and how dynamic he is, that they have other skill position players to be able to get it done. I think that's what makes them so intriguing. It's quarterback play though that is going to kind of determine if they can be that team that gets to the postseason. For a business standpoint, is this game being done for international or is this Netflix?

33:12Because this is a Netflix game also. Yeah, it is Netflix. Netflix game. Yeah. And it's an international game. But the 49ers went and I'm assuming they did a couple of things with people, you know, on the ground. Right? On the ground. But the Rams, like in and out. So they're not interacting with anybody. Their fans obviously had to get there earlier. But this is a marquee game. Like if you were talking about one of the five best preseason games on a schedule, it would be Rams 49ers and it's for the fans, it's halfway around the world. And it's on Netflix. So how did this all play out? Fans won't care where they're playing as long as they can find it on their television. That's it.
