It's Tuesday, March 17. I'm Nireita Moreno, and you're listening to the LAS Report's
0:53
afternoon edition from LAS News.
1:00
Over the weekend, hundreds of Angelinos journeyed to an immigrant detention center in the
1:04
Mojave Desert to protest against alleged conditions in Adelanto. Currently, an estimated 2,000
1:11
people are being held at this facility. Hulia Barajas was part of the reporting team that covered
1:16
the protest, and she joins us now. Hulia, you went to Adelanto with our colleague, Libby Rainey,
1:22
and my understanding is that this was a protest, but it was also a type of concert, right? Can you
1:27
explain? Yeah, of course. So the event was coordinated by the National Day Labor Organizing
1:32
Network and sister organizations across Southern California, and the purpose, as you mentioned,
1:37
was twofold. So on one hand, people were there to protest the Trump administrations,
1:42
ongoing mass deportation effort, and the expansion of these types of detention centers.
1:46
So current and former detainees, the immigrants phase, run in food, denial of medication, and solitary
1:51
confinement. The federal government has denied these claims, but as NPR reported last week, the number
1:56
of people who are dying in ice custody keeps growing. The protesters were also there for a concert,
2:02
which was staged to serenade the people being held at Adelanto. And what did you hear from the
2:06
protesters in terms of where they came from and their motivation? People made a trek from all
2:11
parts of the LA and even the Bay Area upstate. We spoke with family members of some of the people
2:17
who are currently being detained. We also had a conversation with the man who used to be in
2:22
prison at Adelanto, and he was there distributing groceries in case anyone was struggling to make
2:26
ends meet. And other people wanted to express solidarity with their immigrant neighbors.
2:30
Here's Heavenly Cute. She's a longtime Altadena resident whose community was destroyed in the
2:35
Eden Fire last January. We're here to show that black and brown unity is very important, especially
2:40
under this administration. The strength is in us being in solidarity with one another. And knowing
2:46
that ice has impacted Pasadena and Altadena also impacted the recovery. We know that there has been
2:53
day laborers who have been supporting the recovery, the debris removal. And Heavenly told us she really
2:59
appreciated the effort to play music for the detainees because joy is also a form of resistance.
