18:51The wait for some families is agonizing but researchers believe they have made a breakthrough that could speed up the process and help provide some closure Chief correspondent Adrian Arsano brings us that story Last thing he said to me was people are jumping out of the window. I got to go those were Michael iKin's last words to his new bride monica September 11th 2001 He called her from the 84th floor the north tower of the world trade center urging her to turn on the television She did and effectively watched her husband get murdered 25 years later not a single trace of him has ever been found I didn't get a ring I didn't get an ID people got cards they got they found papers with their names on it like I didn't get Zero it's like he went to work and that's it like nothing It's not just michael's remains that have never been identified 40% of the two thousand seven hundred and 53 people killed in New York City that day have yet to be matched with any of the thousands of remains found

19:55The work to match them has never stopped and recently there was an extraordinary breakthrough one more ID Made using new forensic tools to extract more DNA from bone paired with genetic genealogy and this allows to kind of look at family units Wider kind of more branching way dr Jennifer Odin is the world trade center for forensic anthropologist with the chief medical examiner's office The family tree you can have parents siblings we could have aunts uncles cousins and then from that investigation You can then kind of narrow it down to oh we think it's this individual and then from there we could then reach out to families And see if there's possible DNA that could be provided so they're renewing their appeals to family members of those murdered then especially the children to consider submitting DNA samples This means some hope of identification, but dr. Odin knows it also means a complication The medical examiner's office believes many of those who haven't been told remains have been found

20:56Don't want to know it's just too hard count Canadian Abigail Carter among them Have you been contacted do you have any of Aaron's remains? I did not and I'm thankful for that Abigail's husband Aaron Dach was a funny smiling man at home And a serious dedicated worker with his team he was at a trade show at windows on the world at the top of the north tower And he called her to tell her to call 911 She wondered then if he might have been joking You know, I was so preoccupied trying to get my my daughter on the bus for school that I was kind of just like Yeah, all right like why don't you want me to call 911? I of course regret that I didn't just say like are you okay? I love you You know like it never occurred to us that it would be the last time I would talk to him The idea that all these years later she might get a call about remains is really unsettling I don't know just the idea that Something would be in pieces is just disturbing and it's not like I mean I don't feel like I need proof that he was there. I know he was there. He called me

21:58Even with the distance of time This is a delicate moment and there's a lot to consider whenever the medical examiner's office grinds down the remaining bone to find DNA They lose a bit of it. Some remains are now so small. 23:02A man accused of defrauding a Canadian couple in an alleged Mexican condo scam says he too is a victim in the case The couples say they lost their retirement savings in a condo flipping scheme Now one of the accused is speaking with CBC and he says he's innocent Jorge Barrera has the story from Mexico City Um, so you're going to have a hair? CBC News travel to a modest real estate office in Puerto Morelos a small port town in the state of Guintanarro Sitting between Cancun in Pallazalgarmin to track down Harry Robinson a UK national accused by Mexican authorities of taking part in an alleged scheme that wiped out a Canadian couples retirement savings I believe in my own innocence Because we will categorically prove that I did not commit any fraud like Investigators say that Robinson and a Mexican national named Jacqueline Herrera Herrera defrauded a couple from Curve Lake Ontario

24:07Through a fake deal to buy and flip seven condos in Pallazalgarmin The couple Cindy Thompson and Glenn Brown lost $280,000 What happened to the Thompson's was was horrible very unfortunate Robinson says he's given investigators proof in the form of bank statements that his former business partner Herrera redirected Thompson and Brown's money through cashiers checks and bank transfers to other accounts I didn't have access to the money. It was allowed to touch the money But court records from the investigation obtained by CBC News show state authorities are not looking to trace the money They just have to simply prove that Robinson and Herrera did not have any condos to sell to Thompson and Brown Something investigators say they've confirmed, but that still needs to be proven in court Well, he was very convincing You know, he always you know said the right things did Glenn Brown says they trusted Robinson's word and he acted as the middleman in the proposed deal

25:11He made a sound fantastic Robinson says he believed entirely in the deal I was also deceived by the same person as anyone He says he trusted his former business partner Herrera had the goods Hola, como están buenos días a todos en me Faltaría 2 millones de pesos para That's the voice of Herrera from a 2025 voice message asking for money from Thompson and Brown Herrera is now trying to avoid criminal trial by offering to pay the Canadian couple back roughly $196,000 under a court authorized settlement We don't want to say yes to something where we're going to get less money Herrera has claimed through her lawyer That Robinson took the rest of the money Jorge Herrera CBC News Mexico City And finally the effort to rename a street in Ottawa's central park neighborhood As the name suggests the area has somewhat of a New York theme the streets feature signs like grammar c park Statenway and Manhattan Crescent

26:12There are residences called Park Place and Astoria But the one that's causing particular upset for some is Trump Avenue We're past the point of Of debating whether or not that street should have his name on it It's offensive to have his name on a street in the city of Ottawa the nation's capital and it's time to remove that name That city counselor Riley Brockington who filed a notice of motion to change the name of the street dedicated to the now US president The neighborhood was built more than 20 years ago when Donald Trump was a mere New York real estate mogul Brockington says its name needs to change given what he sees as Donald Trump's ongoing attempts to hurt Canada If we were to commemorate a new name in the street today for this individual he would fail basically every criteria So it's time to honor Someone else with the you know a street of the nation's capital The counselor's motion does have the support of Ottawa's mayor Mark Sutcliffe He says as long as the people who live on Trump Avenue are consulted

27:16My preference would be that there's nothing named after Donald Trump in Ottawa And so if this it brings to an end the naming of a of a street in our community after the US president Then I'm fine with that Another Ottawa City counselor Tim Tureny recently told CNN some of the replacement names under consideration Include Obama Avenue Gulf of Mexico Avenue and even Rosie O'Donnell Avenue In honor of the comedian and longtime Trump antagonist a similar motion by counselor Brockington narrowly failed to pass in 2021 The vote on this latest attempt to rename the street is set to take place in about two weeks Thanks for being with us.
