‘Profoundly shocking’ allegations against Cesar Chavez spark soul-searching in movement. Americans support SAVE Act’s photo ID requirements, but democrats reject it. US postal service will run out of money within a year. The 250yr old agency could come to an end. Gen Z is outsourcing hard conversations to A.I.

You're listening to bill handle on demand from KFI AM640
AM640 bill handle here. It is a Wednesday morning March 18th
Right now the first hearing for senator mark wane mullen to be the new dhs secretary after christinaum got fired
And he is uh well he's going to be nailed by the democrats and upheld as a hero by the republicans because that's what happens at these hearings
It's not a question of in that even though they're investigative hearings. There are anything but
And i think one of the questions uh that is now being asked of
Uh senator mullen is how do you think you would look like in a cowboy hat on a horse and he is
Saying damn good. Thank you very much. Now
This is a story that is strange to say the least Caesar Chavez
Which you should know who he is
He founded the united farm workers and this had to do with the grape pickers a table grape pickers
Uh back in uh the 60s who were treated so horribly as basically subhuman
Uh they were put up uh in shacks these were migrant workers that would come to various uh great uh
The farms and uh the whole families would be picking
grapes and they would live in shacks with no open uh open sewers and no hot water no hot water at all
And it was just horrific the way they were treated. So uh Caesar Chavez
created
The united farm workers. Okay
became a huge hero by the way
1965 uh he went on a hunger strike and uh senator robert kennedy
Crazy asked kennedy's father
Who is a well-respected liberal. I mean it was probably going to be president of the united states good chance
Had he not been assassinated in los angeles
So in 1965 uh kennedy breaks bread breaks the fast with him and remember that was covered
I think internationally and uh Caesar Chavez who literally is a saint
Uh he's been deified uh by uh particularly the labor movement
Uh in the united states well uh it's come it's come out now that he has been accused memory
He died 1993. He has been accused now of um
What uh the union is describing as troubling allegations
Uh what kind
Well family issues. This is the quote from the union
Uh that is not our story to tell uh or our place to comment far more troubling allegations involving the abuse of young women or miners
whoa
There was a um
A television personality in england uh a jimmy uh
Savile who was a hero
And uh he uh had it was massive television personality for years decades and decades it turned out
He was molesting children and adults his entire career and it was after he died it came up
The same situation uh 1993 Caesar Chavez dies
So the union is spitting right now
Uh and uh me there's Caesar Chavez streets and schools
I mean the guy is uh and it's true what he did
I mean it was extraordinary individual who made major changes
If you remember back in the 60s and uh I was around uh the
mantra was uva's no
And literally grapes table grapes that were and the stores would sit and rot
Because the boycott was so extraordinarily successful and the growers came to the table
And you have the farm workers now had uh some benefits uh they were they moved into the range of
poorly paid
But at least accepted uh as uh people who deserve
To be treated reasonably well. I mean they became a part of the workforce where here before they weren't even part of the workforce
They were just uh people that were abused beyond belief
And Caesar Chavez did it
And now you've got allegations of all of these uh
Untoward uh let's say uh
Yeah, I don't want to go too far with this. Oh let me go too far
Uh abusing raping uh minor uh girls
That's the accusation and you think that those are only allegations and the union pointed out those are allegations
However
Do you then take allegations with someone like this and knock off all of the celebrations of his life
And the founding of the united farm workers
They have cancelled so many events
So there's some there has to be something there because if I'm uh head honcho of uh united farm workers
I would say hey these are allegations
And allegations uh certainly are not factual. They're allegations. They could be
Well the union is accepting. There's something there. There is something there. Now does that mean there is something there
I don't know uh you'll see some lawsuits uh for short
Uh and uh why can they how can they file lawsuits because here's what uh the state of california does
Is it opens up a window where lawsuits could be filed
For conduct that happened 40 years ago 50 years ago
And you've got that they did that sort of the boy scouts they did this with uh the uh catholic priests
Uh where windows were opened up and uh the lawsuits hit which is why uh the
Boy scouts and the church wrote hundreds of millions of dollars in checks
If you add it all up, it's in the billions of dollars and even
They were paying people that had been molested 50 years ago
And so we'll see what happens
But uh see sir chavez boy is you talk about being knocked off uh of a pedestal
And he truly truly is uh was
On a pedestal and in reference to canceling the events the union said
The reason it was canceling it would provide space for people who may have been victimized
Define support and to share their stories if that is what they choose
Isn't that pretty much an admission that they're saying yep
You betcha see sir chavez boy. I'll remember him uh and uh what a hero he was to the uh to the labor movement
I mean truly
Okay, uh there's a big controversy of foot uh with uh the save act and uh this is uh the act that the president is pushing
It's save america act and uh the one that's being talked about the most uh the
the provision that is
Certainly noted by most of us is requiring photo ID to vote
Democrats have long opposed this okay. They're saying it's basically like a Jim Crow era loss
That prevents african americans from voting to show voter ID to show picture ID is basically stopping many many african americans from voting
Well, guess what that message is failing
It's falling flat with the american public including black voters
And why because photo IDs are required for almost everything now
and
Why not for voting
There was a few research center poll uh in august and uh 83% of you have a us adult support requiring all voters to show government issued photo ID to vote
It's only 16% opposed it
And support now includes 71% of identified democrats self identified democrats 83% of independence even 76% of black voters are saying photo ID is okay
Uh and the democrats of course uh and certainly in congress are saying no no no no only uh one
Democratic senators in favor and that's uh federman out of pennsylvania
Uh
Now uh republicans are focusing on the photo ID provision
Uh democrats also point out well, let's look at the rest of the save america act requiring proof of citizenship
A passport or a birth certificate to register. That's a higher burden to prove than just a photo ID
President trump has also called for the amendment attached to it
To include restrictions on mail-in voting boy. That's a little more controversial
And then throws in provisions against trans athletes and gender-affirming surgeries for minors
What the hell's have to do with uh voting?
You just sort of throw that in the pack and hope it slips through i guess
uh
So there was a press call on saturday and senator schumer who is um norta leader uh went to other provisions in the save
America act when he was asked about this particular photo ID provision
Uh and he started talking about the department of homeland security to screen states voter roles
That's part of the bill uh flag suspected non-citizens for disqualification
And here is the problem is uh that uh the president and republicans have said that without absolute proof of citizenship
There were huge numbers of illegal aliens that are voting
Well, how many huge numbers
In the millions. Well, uh, okay, how about some proof huge numbers
I can't give you the exact number, but they're huge
Oh, that's just not true. I mean they just don't vote. I can't imagine an illegal alien who is looking at being deported
Is going to go and vote
That's going to happen
So here is one possibility and this is uh what one democratic leader said how about a national ID card tied to social security or
Another federal program and that could serve as a one-stop shop for all the business with government
And I'll tell you why that makes sense
We're one of the few countries in the world that do not have a national ID card
We don't look and it makes sense if you go all over the world
There's your card and that proves everything you use that card for proof across the board
Boy, it's a lot easier
Well, uh the democrats saying we don't even want that
Because poor people don't have access to their birth certificates or know how to get them
The don't have passports because they just don't have passports because they're very few poor people in the inner city
They jump on an airplane and fly overseas
and so it disenfranchises people
And they're in lies the rub
Is the reason that the voter ID law to be passed save america act is to disenfranchise democratic voters?
Or is it uh to make sure that voting is secure
Well, guess what the republics are saying guess what the democrats are saying that's the fight but the bottom line is
We are more and more in fader favor of voter ID
I like the idea of voter ID and I told this story many many times
So I went last time I went to the polls to vote
I now do mail-in voting
Because well just because I got lazy in my old age
But I'd love to go to the polls because that to me is exercising my franchise to vote as an american citizen
I physically go there. I punch the card
For my candidate and when I went there and they asked me a William handle
I gave him my address and they go yep there you are and I say now would you like to see my ID?
You know proving who I am no
Wait a minute. Don't you want to see my ID? They refuse to look at it literally refuse to even look at it
It's like they've looked away
So I threw it at them
No, I didn't
I should have
Okay, now uh there is um well, uh there's uh some talk right now
Postmaster general david steiner uh said at a hearing uh yesterday
Uh in front of the house oversight subcommittee on government operations saying the us postal service uh we're going broke
That said we don't have any money. We're going to go under
Oh quick factoid who created the postal service do do do do do do do do
Neil
Ben Franklin correct and and the post US Postal Service is older than the United States
It's been around for a while. Okay, so with that uh what david steiner said the postmaster general who's a former FedEx subordinate member
Uh, he said here's the problem and these are problems that we have to deal with for sure
Uh, first of all the uh post office does not get money from the government
Uh, it is a quasi governmental agency and it will attest it's self-funding
sale of stamps basically and packages, etc
Uh, and also uh what we have that no other
No other service does in terms of mailing packages uh and envelopes, etc
is uh that um it's a universal service obligation
will be required to provide mail service to every American no matter where the American lives in the United States
Which means the boondocks of Alaska you can only get there by sled dog sled seriously
Uh the bottom of the grand canyon uh muole service literally they go down there by a muole that's the US Postal Service
And it just cost about a bunch of money and the uh
Steiner said listen you want all that that's fine
You know we can do that we are doing that but you got to pay for it
And so the way the post office stays afloat because it's been losing money for years
I mean by the billions of dollars 10 billion dollars a year for the last several years is they borrow from the government
The government is likely to give him money, but the government less than borrow money and uh there's now a limit as to how much
Can be borrowed and the post office has already hit it so Steiner said and we need more room to borrow
And also look at emails
Look at the way we deal uh with communication
No one writes letters anymore
Uh, which is I think a reasonably good thing although you know penmanship and the only person I know that has great penmanship
Heems to be Michelle uh cube who just has beautiful handwriting the rest of us is chicken scratches for the most part
Uh, so what we do is we do emails back and forth
And that means we don't do letters now it's hard to ship a package via email
But a letter is a little bit easier well the post office makes most of its money on first class mail
And first class mail is disappearing very very quickly
Now packaging is different
And here is uh the issue if I go to FedEx and I want to uh
Uh mail a package. I want FedEx a package to uh burrow Alaska
Which is the probably the most northern part of Alaska and the last
I think the last populated place in the United States
Uh, FedEx is going to tell me to go pound sand
You as postal service has to deliver that package
It has to deliver the package at the same price
That a package is delivered from here to Denver for example or from here to San Diego
Uh, that is the huge problem and the postal service simply can't compete
So what Steiner said is tell you what why don't we raise uh the
Uh, cost of a first class stamp from 75 to 75 cents to 95 cents my god, that's crazy
You know what at 75 cents uh, we're still among the lowest uh cost mailing services national mailing service
Which they usually are in the world in the industrialized world
I mean, you know, you go to certain countries and mail is delivered uh, you know
On backpacks right next to the explosive s. So uh, it's it blows up pretty quickly
Okay, I'm not gonna go there. All right. All right. I take it back. All right fine fine fine
Neil shakes his head when I say stuff like that
Uh, in any case uh, so the president actually has um an idea and he says take away
uh, the
Independence of the u.s. Postal service, which is a quasi-independent service
and uh put it under uh, the commerce department
And therefore we don't have to worry about it being
semi-autonomous and money because it's simply part of the budget of the United States
And he said uh, that's going to be much much easier
So it would be uh, the Donald J. Trump
post office uh
The postal service of the United States
Uh, which I think would be great. I don't have any problem. I mean does that make sense yet here is the problem with that
It actually does make sense financially
But it doesn't make sense for uh, the president or any president uh, to have uh, control of the post office
We are quickly moving away from any autonomous agencies
The Fed which is supposed to be autonomous
Uh, or semi-autonomous so at least should have a firewall between the government uh, the administration and what it does
And today the Fed is going to meet again and Trump is going to go berserk
Because the Fed shares your own pal is going to announce no interest drop
We're not going to move interest rates and Trump is going to do it what he normally does
Uh, when anybody disagrees with him
Uh, and so if it's part of the commerce department it gives control to the administration
And that's the problem and depending on which side of the administration you're on also
Uh, the post office uh, with uh, or the commerce department because it's arbitrarily say it's 95 cents say uh
95 cents. Thank you
That's how much it costs or charge more money for uh, distance delivery
You want to go to burrow Alaska? It's going to cost you a buck 50 for a letter
Not just uh, 75 or 95 cents. Okay, uh, a story out of CNN actually and it starts with uh, uh
This gal Emily who receives a text from a fellow student Patrick
She gone on a blind date with him. They're juniors at Yale. So he writes to her
Hey, Emily. I hope your half marathon went well. I'm sure you crushed it
Uh, okay bear with me here. I'm not the best at this kind of thing, but here goes
And he added he wasn't looking for anything too serious right now
But they want to hang out together. He does
So at first Emily didn't think and I mean, that's not out of the ordinary
But she shared the message with two friends who uh, put it through an AI intelligence uh, detector
And she had her answer
It was like a high
99%
And he admitted using chat GPT to uh, write uh, the his uh, message
And what do I do here? It's first time I've ever seen anyone since my high school girlfriend
I didn't know what to do. I mean, I tried writing my thoughts down, but I wasn't sure how to format it
Uh, so I went the chat I gave chat the situation and chat spit out the response
And here is the problem more and more people are doing that
And even it's not even just question of laziness uh, which is a huge issue. Yeah, let them do it
It's also uh, uh, that
Uh, AI is being turned to to navigate social situations
And that is important
And the social cues that you take
How you deal with people bottom line is social relationships are messy
That's what life is about
AI unmesses it
It's clear cut here you go and relying on AI just uh puts this generation
Uh, in a whole different light also you hear about the brain the cortex uh, uh
Developing uh, by the time you're 25 26. That's when it's fully developed
Well, uh, Gen Zers aren't
And so that actually stops the development curtail's it slows it down
And this is a really broad broad research uh concern that researchers have uh, the head of research at common sense media non profit
Michael Robb calls his social offloading
And it isn't even limited to generation Z
Uh, he's observed it with gen alpha
I don't know these uh born between 2010 and 2024
Some millennials uh, 1981 to 1996. I've never been figured. I never could figure out these generations
You know, it doesn't go 1980 to 2000, right? I mean god forbid that it makes sense on that one
But the bottom line is uh, that uh, we are uh going in directions uh with AI some good some bad
And this one not so good. I mean we're changing. We're not going to we are not going to uh, be able to read
It's going to come to the point where AI is going to talk to us
If you have a question you won't have to read it
It will tell us
What you want to know in the in the method that is easiest for you to assimilate it
Uh, books
newspapers
Uh, scrolling
Well, you'll be able to just scroll without your fingers
You'll just be able to say scroll down scroll up. I mean, do you remember Wally
Uh, the uh, the movie where you had those incredibly fat people that were just scooting around
And that's how they lived
Yeah, that's where we're going
I mean just to getting fatter and fatter
Will what do you think of that?
Okay, I think it was a great piece of animated fiction
Okay, animated fiction what planet are you on? Okay
coming up
Boomers
Uh, that's me by the way, I'm a boomer and I'm going to tell you a little bit about what boomers that you would be surprised
