Chagos, Iran and the new era of naked imperialism

Despite some theatre for the benefit of domestic populations, there is no serious dispute in the Anglo-American camp over the aims and methods of US imperialism. Diego Garcia’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean, with access to south Asia, east Africa, and the middle east, is more than enough reason for the imperialists’ illegal turfing out of locals and establishment of a powerful military base there. This is one of many ‘strategic island’ locations that the British held onto as they were officially ‘dismantling’ their empire, and is a key part of Britain’s ‘special relationship’ with the USA. Tiffs between London and Washington over who ultimately controls the base reveal contradictions in the imperialist camp (and frustration over the lack of finesse in Trump’s White House) – but in the end, the Anglo-American financiers are united in their desire to maintain imperialist world domination.
