Few things are as uplifting as the greatest moments in sports.
And nothing brings us together quite like Team USA at the Olympic Winter Games.

millions.
When Team USA steps onto the world stage, we're not just watching, we're cheering together.
This winter, we're all on the same team, Comcast, proud partner of Team USA.
The Chiefs went from the frying pan all the way into the fire and lit it up by signing
Kenneth Walker, both third to the running backspot today.
We didn't see it coming, we're going to tell you why next.
From the land of the three and the home of the Chiefs, this is the Lockdown Chief Podcast.
Welcome in Chiefs, Kingdom, the free agency frenzy that the Chiefs are not usually in
has kicked off and we appreciate you being here, checking in with us, making us your first
listen here in Lockdown Chiefs, your daily podcast for the Kansas City Chiefs.
I'm Lockdown Podcast.
Now we're the number one sports network in America, in the world, in the universe.
I'm just going to say it all because it feels good to say we have a lot and I'm a little
excited because I didn't expect what happened today.
We're going to break it all down for you this morning, et cetera, et cetera.
If you didn't see our breaking news pieces, you can go check those out as well and we're
going to revisit Kenneth Walker, signing Kansas City, the first big chunk, what that means
and what that signals because it is more significant than just getting a running back.
And I'm going to tell you why then we're going to come back Travis Kelsey late this afternoon.
We understand it's coming back on a one year, $12 million contract, but is it?
We'll hit that as well as who the Chiefs lost and who some other new Chiefs are going
to be.
What it's all about.
I'm right, Tracy, the founder, Rogan, analytics and performance consulting, but we break
down the draft and all the metrics that you need to know about the class going in.
You can find my work over at nfl33.com and our gerafootball.com and setting us straight
on the cap, which is going to be an important factor here.
All the quarterback measurements, the business side, this is Chris Clark at KC Chiefs Corner
is where you can find him.
And this is a lot to go over.
This is going to be a fun show.
We can't thank you enough and you every day is why we do this and why we are so successful
at it.
We couldn't do it without you.
If you want in and you want the behind the scenes inside the discord, there's only
for our members and getting that ad free audio, you can do it at lockdowncheese.supercast.com
and use that key term free agency to get yourself a discount through March 15.
You want to check that out because that's what's going on right now is free agency.
And it is then some Kenneth Walker, average 14.35 per year if I have that right.
I thought it was a little bit lower when it first came out by first reports.
But it's a three year deal for the reigning Super Bowl MVP and the guy that has produced
more explosive plays by himself last season than this team has as a whole in the running
game.
I'm pretty sure he had two in the Super Bowl explosive runs and the Chiefs didn't have
any of the entire season.
Yeah, it depends what you're defining is explosive, but it certainly is there.
Yeah.
So definitely something to look at, 28.7 million guaranteed for Kenneth Walker of the
third.
It's going to be real interesting to see all in the structure how they have it.
My guess is cap hits probably five, six, seven million this year for 2026 depends on what
the signing bonus is.
I would imagine he's got the normal minimum salary.
So my guess is it's there's going to be a large signing bonus and then it's going to jump
in 2027 because the Chiefs are going to have some room going forward.
At this point, that's going to be the big question.
How he fits in the offense is going to be interesting as well because I do think that what
he does best, he has a city hasn't been doing very well or very much of.
So you have to wonder how they're going to shift in 2026.
Yeah, that does make sense.
The shift is the thing and there's a lot of conjecture here and no more so than I think
is relevant for a guy that is blocking for a guy in this position.
That kicks you so much that he came out and had some nice things to say on social about
getting ready to block for Mitch Schwartz, old friend, had an opposite take is in his
comment was you don't have to commit to the run with this because he provides more upside
on a less on a more per touch basis rather than having to dedicate it to it.
But I will say this, that is absolutely true.
You should get more bang for the buck per touch, but you still at this amount of dollars
spent have to give him more touches than what we've seen Andy do in the last few years.
And maybe that justifies it and maybe that's what Andy needed to say, Hey, we're spending
on this resource.
I didn't think they would spend this money.
I'm glad that they do because you guys know how I feel about the run game.
I want the run game.
I didn't necessarily believe it had to be one player, but if you have a player of this
caliber and a guy that can break away, that's what this offense needs.
The crazy thing to me about this is you're sitting here looking at a situation where it's
a question of do you sign, you know, do you go out and get Kenneth Walker?
Do you get Etienne?
Because everybody was talking about the chiefs and Etienne and how there was, you know,
that was going to be a thing.
Walker's 25 will won't be 26 until I believe October if I'm correct on that, which means
he will be 29 when this contract is playing out in the third year.
So I'm kind of reserving judgment on the contract until we actually get the actual details
as to how it breaks out because it's more than likely more like a two year 28 million
dollar deal than than what is being reported.
But you know, we'll see how that ends up being when it all comes down to it.
But the other side of that and the reason I bring up at TN is because he got a four year
deal for 52 million.
So it's a little bit less than what Walker got, but Etienne's also 27 and you're talking
about a league where this is a not for long league and a not for long position.
I think this is a better deal even though they paid more money.
I completely agree with you.
And I think as this last season has shown you, I had Kenneth Walker hire on my draft board
then even brace hall in their class.
So I think it's a good investment.
Yes, he had some early injuries and it is a concern that we still have to keep an eye
on.
But it has proven out that he has become the top back in that class.
And when you look at what's happened today, those two guys moved.
Other than that, Tether or Gerald goes to the Cardinals from the Falcons, Kent Gainwell
goes to the bucks from the Steelers.
Everybody else pretty much resigned with their previous team.
Yeah, the other thing that's going to be interesting about how this is playing out is Kenneth
Walker faced a lot of stacked boxes in Seattle.
That isn't going to be an issue.
Oh, I hope he does.
I hope he does.
So does Patrick, because that's the job.
That's the role by having a threat in this run game now.
If you have to pull down and put someone else in that box, it opens up the field for Travis
and Rashid and Xavier and player to be named next is the way I'm going to put it.
Sorry, I'm not discounting Jalen Royals, but I do think that there is another ride you're
see where that's going to be started to the scene that isn't on this team.
No, I think you're probably right in that.
I think they, when you look at how this is playing out so far, people are going to look
at the Kenneth Walker deal and be surprised that the chief spent the money.
I am a little surprised, but I'm not shocked.
And I will say this probably also leads the chiefs to make more adjustments to contracts.
And I would imagine that we're going to be hearing about more adjustments to contracts,
especially with Travis Kelsey, we'll talk about in a second.
But the big one that really is interesting to me, and I know we need to focus on Walker,
but the big one that I think is going to be interesting over the next couple of years,
you look at Creed Humphrey being at $18 million in the Linderbomb, just got 27.
He's now like a two thirds of the highest, man.
It's crazy.
And it's a screaming deal at this point, because I will, and I still think the chiefs
adjust it, and it'll adjust the cap for the future.
But Creed's not going anywhere, so he's still the number one center in the league, but
he is not getting paid like the number one center in the league.
I do think that there are going to be some more cap adjustments that will be coming
mainly just because at this point, they've spent most of the money that they could
probably spend and still get the draft class signed and any of their own.
Guys, the other thing that's interesting about all this is we have no word on it,
on the chiefs getting any restricted for agents or exclusive rights for agents.
That's kind of interesting for this time of year.
Yeah, that's true.
That's usually the thing that leaks out first, but this is the first year in a while
that the chiefs have been players on day one.
You've let alone like hour one.
So that I think also gives you a clue as to what they recognize as the need here.
And I think as we go forward this week, we'll talk about it more.
We'll talk with Matt tomorrow, and we'll break down a little bit more about what the role is.
And it's not just about the run game.
It's about the overall offense, but that offense is still going to look pretty much the saying
because all 87 decided he's coming back 12 million.
I think it's worth it.
We're going to get into it next.

We have a ton here.
A lot to break down about Travis Kelsey.
I hope you guys feel better.
We told you yesterday.
Relax. He's not going to play anywhere else.
He will end his career as a chief.
And that is exactly what's happening as we heard here within the last hour.
Travis coming back looks like a one year deal for 12 million possibly up to 15 with incentives
is the way that it's read so far.
I know that you have some questions about that.
But if that's true, if that's just a straight crash, cash transaction.
I'm okay with that.
In that, it motivates him for, I think, a last flourish.
A last dance kind of little more than I expected to tell you truth.
I thought it'd be closer down in the 10 range.
But I can live with it.
How did you take it?
I'm still a little surprised.
I just have a hard time believing that this is just going to end up being a straight one year deal.
I would not be surprised if it's like a one year deal with a void year.
Or two void years.
Because at this point, it's the chief's chasing and trying to get Kelsey to come back to chasing
on the Super Bowl and go back.
And so to me, I'm not going to be upset even if it's just the one year deal.
Will be a little surprised, but I'm not going to be upset about it.
Kelsey, it's funny because we actually talked about this last, we recorded it last night,
but it came out this morning talking about the fact that Kelsey wasn't going to be playing anywhere else.
It was all just kind of one of those things.
And then you go look at what some of the other tidings have gotten in money.
And, you know, Kohler, who's done almost nothing in the NFL,
comparatively speaking, got what, eight million a year.
Although I like that signing a little pissed off that it's in Los Angeles.
I understand.
I think he's a guy that helps their offense quite a bit.
I wouldn't mind adding him as a TE2.
And I like Kohler.
I think he can be a good player.
I just, eight million a year is a little, I mean,
for a guy that basically did almost nothing.
I do think Kelsey left money on the table.
So if this is just a really a one year deal, I think he left money on the table
because he probably could have gotten something
if he was going to be willing to look elsewhere.
But this is probably the max as to what Kansas City could offer.
And I would imagine that those incentives are not likely to be earned in incentives,
which would mean that he would have to come in and probably have like a thousand yard season
or chiefs go Super Bowl or something similar or win the Super Bowl or something
to hit that extra three million.
Because I can't imagine they're going to put that on the sour cap on top of
something that you can easily get.
So to me, I do think that it's going to be interesting to see what ends up coming from this.
And I know we have a lot of people in the chat asking,
did we have we heard of any other adjustments to contracts?
I have not this point.
I've been watching.
I've been looking.
But I still think that there's a pretty decent chance that you get an
adjustment to creed.
You may get an adjustment to Trace Smith.
And maybe you get an adjustment to Chris Jones.
I will see you on that one.
I'm hoping they don't touch Jones's contract.
But at this point, we have another guy we're going to need to talk about.
The Chris Jones is pretty happy about.
And I know Ryan's going to be happy about it.
We're going to talk about that a little bit later.
But Kelsi being back is interesting.
And here's my question though.
I don't want to take away from Kelsi.
But this is something that we haven't had chance to talk about.
And it does seem like we keep hearing more and more
that Brian Thomas Jr.'s available for the Jags.
Would you?
Yes.
I mean, it depends on the cost of course.
But yes.
Second round.
I believe he was my...
Why did you say we're two in that class?
I'd have to go back and double check that one.
Second round.
It's a little steep for me, given performance.
But I'd give him a high third, which we know that we happen to have.
So why not?
Yeah.
There's, I mean, it's just going to be interesting to me.
I'm just curious because I know
that people are looking at that going.
Why is he available?
Don't have a good answer on that one.
I know he doesn't necessarily fit what they're trying to do.
But you start talking about what you can do on this offense
and how you can adjust and make things happen.
And that, to me, would be one of those things
where that would be a huge change for this team.
Yeah, I mean, it would be very big.
And we're going to talk about that in terms of the draft.
Now, and I think the next week is going to make things clear
about what the draft priorities are.
I do want to stay on the tight ends in this team for a second.
I do like, as you said,
color at eight, Isaiah likely got 13.3 a year.
That's surprising to me too, very much heavier.
So it makes sense, Travis at 12,
that it does look relatively good.
Although I will say I love the siding of Isaiah likely in New York
because I think this is exactly what Jackson Dart needs.
Is a weapon at that position to help him.
I think that was super smart.
And one of my favorite moves of the day,
one of my least favorite moves right now,
is that the entire, like, the fab fiber gone.
This was a cornerstone of Brett Viches' accomplishments
and they are gone.
Watts and gets picked up by the Rams.
The Rams are basically stealing half of the Chief Secondary
at this point.
If they didn't already have a link,
they might have taken Brian Cook to tell you the truth.
Cook ends up playing for the Bengals,
which I cannot stand either.
That bothers me.
But at this point, I don't expect Nazi Johnson to be back.
I don't expect Joshua Williams to be back.
And poof, the fab fiber gone.
I did not expect that.
That took me by surprise.
What about you?
It didn't take me by a huge surprise when I saw what Jim Watson was getting.
You paid, trying to make up for you,
$100 million guaranteed.
You're paying Jim Watson another, what, $50 million guaranteed.
Or somewhere in there, like, he's over $70 million a year.
So you're going to be looking at this secondary
and going, okay, what are they going to do?
Well, they have guys that they've drafted in no Williams.
They had a guy that they brought in last year who didn't play much.
But you have to think that they're going to be looking at corner
a little bit more than they probably were before.
But I can't really say, we talked about this with the homie Duffy thing.
I can't say that I was upset that they let him go with that number.
Like, there's no way I could justify paying Tremond Duffy 31 million a year.
Period.
Well, yeah, and at this point, it'd be what?
So there's a 48 million between the two of them.
There just was no way this was going to stick together.
Well, and beyond that, you know, I saw somebody say that the Rams are trying to argue
that it's really a $27.5 million deal because they're getting them for $3.3 in 2026.
Okay, great.
I still wouldn't have paid Tremond Duffy that.
So I don't care.
Good luck, Rams.
Just fight however you want.
Yeah, you have to deal with the consequences.
It does shed some light, though.
And I see in the chat, you guys are on it.
You're keeping up the corner back.
The secondary general is becoming more of a focus here.
We're seeing part of the offseason season plan here.
And it's going to shift towards the defense.
Will they do something in the wide receiver market?
Have they done another restructure?
Those are other things that could come.
But who's going to be the new chiefs and who are possible new chiefs?
That's what we're getting to right after this.
College basketball is non-stop.
Big games, tight spreads, momentum swings, every single night.
From early tip-offs to the late-night west coast action shootouts,
there's always action on the board and you can get in there.

There's a lot to it.
I'll let you bring up the defensive tackle.
The other signing today is that they are reinforcing part of that.
And I do think that is a reflection of what this defensive tackle class is.
But what's your reaction that tells about the player and what you thought?
I love it.
Curious Tonga.
Is that how you pronounce his name?
Definitely Tonga.
Yeah, just calm Tonga.
I love the signing actually.
I think that this is a fantastic sign.
This gives them the ability to basically upgrade two positions.
And what I mean by that is the fact that you were not putting
well, it's not even it's not and I'm not even talking about the offensive side.
Oh, what you're thinking.
Oh, yeah, I wasn't talking that.
I'm talking defensively because this really what it does is it resets what you're asking
on more normal lot to do.
So now you have a backup for Chris Jones.
Like you didn't have that going into this off season because they were trying to play
on more normal lot where Tonga is going to be playing.
Right.
And so it allows Omar to go back to his base weight.
And be himself, right?
Right.
It's been it's a great move for that.
And that doesn't even take into account the where everybody else is going
with the offensive stuff, which I know you would love.
And think about what Don Terry Pote did.
Like they they've used the Patriots used Tonga.
I think 19 or 20 times this season as a fullback.
Andy Reed and yeah, Andy Reed and being in me are going to be excited
because I do think that this they're going to bring some stuff back that they haven't
used in a couple years because they haven't had somebody at that position.
I don't know that we'll see hungry pig right.
But it's not going to shock me if he's back there as somebody that's on the goal line.
It's funny because he's going to be basically a two-way goal line players.
And yes, he'll play more downs than just that.
But that's my point.
Like he'll be playing on both goal lines if the chiefs are going to go heavy.
Yeah, and that's that's my point.
This is not the move.
It's it's similar, but it's not the move that I thought they would make.
I thought Tim Settle was a guy that could do similar things.
Not on the offensive side, but on the defensive side and brought some edge,
brought some Frank Clark to the defensive tackle position.
The guy's just he plays with some nasty.
He talks a lot of trash on the field.
I thought it would have been a good signing.
He ends up getting 8 million per season.
He goes to the commanders.
The chiefs give just a million less to Tonga.
And a guy that probably fits the mold a little bit more
in terms of like a jovial kind of defensive tackle room.
That means they got to get some some edge and some nasty from somewhere else
on this defensive front.
Maybe that's because there happens to be a bunch of edge rushers out there
that have a ton of nasty to them.
So maybe that's keying us on the direction we're going.
Well, but you also look at the fact and I know that you were upset about this,
but go look at the edge market.
I mean, you look at the what people are getting paid on the edge market right now.
And I know we're talking edges and defensive line and all that.
But I just have to say, thank you, Brett Beach,
for bringing in a guy like Menshu last year,
for 1.75 million.
I think it was because he just got 8 million dollars for a one-year deal.
And he did nothing for the chiefs last year.
What did you do? You throw 13 passes or something like that?
Something like that.
Yeah.
So I've just thrown it out there.
That was a brilliant move to go get Menshu.
And yet he basically got four times the money for doing almost nothing.
So congrats on each on that.
I will be curious to see what they have in the QB room.
But when you're starting to look at the defensive line,
at this point, you have to figure the defensive end is going to be something
that they heavily invest in in the draft.
And I think that became even more evident when you started looking
at what these edges were getting.
I mean, you have two guys that got 20 million dollars a piece.
Maybe the chiefs were going to be willing to do something close to that,
but I didn't expect them to be putting 20 million dollars into a defensive end.
So for those of you asking,
that boy, Maffe did go to the Bengals at three years, 60 mil, 20 per.
And that's well beyond the 12 or so.
I thought his market was going to be.
I think most of the cap analyst had him projected at even less.
So the Bengals end up with Maffe and Brian Cook.
So their defense has been pretty lax is now getting some injection of talent.
We got to keep them on the radar.
I'm not necessarily scared, but I think they're on the radar.
Well, but Adafee, my, oh, way, the other guy that I was talking about the other day,
he goes for 25,000, 40 years, 100.
That's crazy.
And Jalen Phillips, who would have been fun, but we told y'all along,
he was priced out, got 30 million dollars a year
from the Carolina Panthers.
That's, that's crazy talk.
Now, I will say this.
I will give the Eagles GM credit.
He traded away, got Jalen Phillips and is going to turn it into a comp pick.
And a pretty decent comp pick because he got signed elsewhere.
So congratulations on that.
You talk about what the Bengals did with Cook.
I'm sad to see Cook go, but I wasn't, I didn't want to pay him what he got paid in Cincinnati.
I, yeah, I'm one of the few that was comfortable, but that's okay.
It doesn't really matter.
It's, it's the fact that the chiefs weren't going to.
And then he got there and that's all that really pays for it.
I mean, it is good for him.
And I think as long as you're able now and that brings us to the other new chiefs,
there are other free agents out there, right?
There has not been a ton.
Let me pull it up here.
A ton of movement at the safety and corner positions.
There's been a lot of signing back, a lot.
Jaylen Thompson moved to the Cowboys.
We talked about Bryant, Kobe Bryant moves from the Seahawks to the Bears.
I love that move, by the way.
Not a lot of moving around.
DeAlford Falcons to, to Bills.
It's, there's a lot still out there.
And I do think the chiefs will make another signing, probably at safety and at corner.
I don't think they're going to be impact starting level players.
I think we're going to have to look for that in the draft.
Well, and I also wonder if they're going to be in on the wide receiver markets.
There hasn't been a ton of movement on that.
There has been a couple of guys that have signed, but not anything that's been huge.
I heard rumors that they were interested in,
and I don't know, Mooney.
Don't know if I really see that happening.
We'll see.
Tyco and Thorden hasn't signed a deal yet as of right now as this recording.
So we'll see whether or not they want him back.
I would imagine that Juju will be back, although I wonder if he's not going to be wearing number
9 anymore.
That would be not.
So, yeah, um, still they get my back, maybe.
So it'll be interesting to see how that ends up.
But, you know, you look at free agency just in general.
I mean, there's lots of ways that there's lots of different ways the chiefs could go.
The question is, is what do they want to do?
And this is kind of, this is what I mentioned on, on, you know, a little bit earlier.
This is what I mentioned, I think a couple of times last week.
At this point, the chiefs are in a situation where they don't have to make a move with anybody
else's contract unless they need money.
Like it's not a matter of, yes, I guess technically Jones has a bonus due on the 13th.
So if they're going to do anything with that, they would need to do it by the 13th.
So that's something that could happen the next couple of days.
But otherwise, you could wait till almost the draft is over if you're going to just make
a move with trace contract or creeds contract because it's just a salary conversion at that point.
It's not.
Yeah, but what does that do?
Is there a reason to do it later?
You know what I mean?
What kind of?
Because you could go out and spend money that you're not going to have otherwise.
On what though?
At that point, free agencies long over.
I'm not talking about no, but no, I'm not talking about that.
I'm talking about having the money to be able to function and be able to do your draft.
Like, yeah, you can be in $1 next
on the 11th.
Yeah.
Right.
But you don't have to actually make any other moves until you get to a point where,
you know, you have to start signing the draft class and you have to start worrying about that.
You have the flexibility to wait until later.
And here's the other thing that that opens up the ability to do.
What if the chiefs end up in a position where there's a high quality starter that ends up
getting cut because somebody had to go and draft a replacement?
Yeah, that's true.
Or not necessarily, but, you know,
that has available that is available that you could maybe trade a 2027 draft pick for.
Or, you know, maybe it is a cut and you go sign in for a cheap deal because
everybody's out of money at this point anyway.
So, I mean, there is a chance to do both of them.
Or there's a chance to continue to be active in free agency.
I am shocked.
I will say this, I am shocked the chiefs made two moves today.
I was expecting at least one.
But I am shocked that they did two, not saying that they didn't need to,
but it is also the two positions that they absolutely have not done enough for
in the past couple of seasons.
And really quick, I know Walker is a three-down guy.
Do you think this means that there's no chance hunts back?
Or do you think he still could come back at a cheap deal?
I think it'll be well after the draft if Hunt does return and it will be like,
do we feel we need somebody else to bring a little umph to short yardage?
I think honestly that Kenneth Walker has proven he can get skinny in there
and make short yardage work for him.
So, I'm not terribly worried about that.
I don't think it's going to happen.
I will say that there's still corner depth out there,
but a lot of the guys that I liked for this team are gone now.
I mean, Robertson signed for eight a year with the commanders.
Cordell Flott, who I really liked for this system,
went to Mike Borgonzi in the Titans.
He got 15 a year.
I wouldn't have paid him that.
So, okay.
And a lot of detailer ended up at 20 a year playing for those Titans.
So, Borgonzi was going to do the reconstruction on his secondary as well.
Eric Stokes goes to the Raiders.
Goes back to the Raiders.
A $10 million per year.
Former Georgia Bulldog.
Then they bring in quite Walker here as we were recording this.
They already got in the Coby Dean.
They're basically rebuilding the national championship defense from Georgia
from a couple of years ago.
Just wait until the cards are free agent.
They might go try to pay it.
Yeah.
We'll see.
It's going to be interesting to see what the Raiders have done.
I mean, the Raiders have made some moves.
The Chargers have made some moves.
Still thinks it's absolutely crazy.
They create Humphries so underpaid,
considering the new market for centers.
Thank you for the Raiders on that.
A lot of teams are probably going to be really pissed
because they just really screwed the market.
Really quick going back to something that we talked about.
In the last segment,
Brian Thomas Jr.
is on the salary cap for 2.1 million guaranteed this year,
2.8 million guaranteed next year,
and a 50 year option in 28.
I'm willing to give up the 40th pick for that.
Yeah, I can get talked into it.
I can get talked into it because
with one and 29, yeah.
Because you're not going to, I don't think you're going to get
somebody better prepared to come in and contribute right away.
And if Pat can hit the ground running whenever he gets back.
And he's comments again today that he's going to be back for a week one.
If that's the truth and give him every weapon,
you can get put Thomas out there
for Rashid and Xavier to play off of and travel as well.
Like, hell, let's go.
All of us.
It walker.
Yeah, that's good.
That would be a really fun offense.
It will be.
We're going to have more for you.
We're going to get Matt's takes and what he knows on the inside tomorrow.
