The Chiefs’ draft is done but the roster isn’t.
Before we dive into the biggest questions surrounding Kansas City’s draft strategy, we kick things off with something completely different… Dairy Queen just dropped a lineup of wild new menu items (including a Cinnamon Toast Crunch dipped cone 👀), and we had to talk about it.
Then we break down the biggest question coming out of draft weekend: what holes still remain, and how can Kansas City fix them before the season? From position concerns to potential free agent targets, we look at what’s still missing and whether the Chiefs did enough to compete right now.
Plus: quick reactions to the draft strategy, key decisions, and a few unexpected detours along the way.

Are the Chiefs REALLY Going to MISS the Playoffs?! | Arrowhead Addict
https://www.youtube.com/@ArrowheadAddictPodcast/
Welcome into the Arrowhead Attic podcast. It is, man, it's Thursday, April 30th, almost
May here. And this is the OG hour, Patrick Allen, joined by my pal from Sports Illustrated,
formerly a fan-sided, Matt Vertram, Matt, how you doing, man?
I'm doing well, how are you?
Are you good? I'm good, how are you doing?
I'm doing good, I'm doing good. Is that a brochure, you're wearing?
Ah, yeah, yes it is. That's a nice one.
Thank you. I went up there on Sunday with the girls and for Genevieve, it was her first
game. She was thrilled to death. She just got a foam finger and we went around a
commandy act. But no, we went up there, a good friend of mine, I know, listen to the pod,
Tyler Barnes is a great guy, works for the team and always is nice enough to help us
sneak into the stadium and take care of the family. So yeah, I went up there with the two
little ones and watched them beat the parts. So it was, it was fun. It gets a great time with
they always do. And yeah, I got a, got a sweatshirt. So I've got, I've got more brewers gear,
seriously, at this point than I have any other team. Maybe the G should be the only exception,
I think. But it's, it's close, it's close. I've got a lot of brewers to stop. But you know,
they've got, the brewers have great logos. So great logos, great colors over the years,
mostly blue and gold. So yeah, I think, I think the one I have on right now, they only wore this
like four years. Yeah. So I said, what the hell? You know, it's, at first, I was like, oh,
is it vintage? And then I realized I'm old. So yeah, it is vintage because it was like 25 years ago.
So now I've got that, moving to Connecticut in a few weeks. And I've got to join the coalition
to get the wellers back and hard for or something. So yeah. Are you one of these guys who,
so like some people, right, they, they're, they're big sports fans. And I know you were an
Oakland A's fan and the team sort of has driven you to the point of insanity. And you've got some
friends of the brewers organization. And so you support them. Are you one of these people who are
like, I'll never wear another logo from another team like some people like they like baseball caps,
don't wear any team, you know, those types of things. Where you stand on that? I don't own anything
of a team. I'm not a fan of except for like jerseys. I'd frame like something like a guy
of like a Wayne Gretzky, Edmonton Oil or Jersey, like for any sample. But no, I mean, look,
and I'm fortunate to like, I've been a next fan of my whole life. I've been a devil's fan of my
whole life, but it she's family life baseball. I was always an A's fan of my whole life. And I mean,
listen, I still, I have MLB TV. I still watch the A's. In fact, I've actually made a huge effort
to share to watch more baseball than I have in real time. I've been watching the brewers and the
A's and it helps that they're in different leagues. I think it's a little bit of a, it's a unique
thing because I grew up in A's fan. And whenever I watch the A's, I mean, I always still feel like
they're, I mean, they're my team. I'm always going to root for them. But, you know, at the brewers,
it's, it's a very personal thing because I've become friends with a lot of people and it's a
couple of good really good friends with people in the building. And so I don't just root for them
because I like the team, which I really have grown to be a fan of them. But also, like I'm
rooting for the people in the building because I know so many people there. I want them to have
success. I went there last year and they played their game five winter take-all in the NLDS
against Chicago. And that was one of the coolest games I've ever been to. I mean, that was just
crazy how excited everybody was and how much it meant. And it's funny being with the people there
that are, you know, in the executive roles. And, you know, for fans, it's super important and
it's, it's a passion. But for these people, it is their jobs. It's their job to win. And it's,
you know, when you watch the game and again, that important with them, you realize just how much
passion there is in the building. And I think sometimes that gets lost, right? I think sometimes
we see these guys up in a box and it's like, oh, yeah, you know, they're watching the game.
It matters in a major way. So no, it's, um, to answer the original question. No, like I usually,
like, I don't have any stuff that isn't like, like, I'm not going to be walking around on
Lakers here. But that's not my deal. I have two minds of it. I would never wear a,
like, a raiders anything, right? But there are certain situations where I'm a fan of sports and
sports is entertainment to me, right? So, you know, my wife, friends, like everybody here knows
I'm an Ohio State fan. My wife went to University of Illinois. And so in the align, I were doing
them all in the tournament, like I picked up an align I had. And I was, I'll wear the align I had
because I'm supporting her. I'm cheering for the align. They're playing Ohio State. I don't feel
like, but it's weird. I think it depends on certain situations. I just, I could never stomach
putting a Yankees hat on my head, right? But yeah, yeah, it's like, yeah, man, I'll, like,
I'll rock some other team's gear. Yeah, I think it's different to like, I went to Fenway years
ago because I always wanted to go to Fenway. And you know, when I was young, I got like a,
just a red socks hat that I was like, well, I'll just play pickleball on it, you know, like,
I don't care about the red socks. But to your point, they're not some big rival of the age of
the Brewers. Like, I don't, so I guess in that regard, I didn't remember that thing you said it.
But yeah, I got to do have a cap of them. I'm trying to just any other team. I think when I lived
in Chicago before I had any affinity for the Brewers, I had like a Cubs jacket, like we all lived
within a mile or regularly and went there all the time, you know, and yeah. But, and he can't,
but like, they weren't a right. So to your point, yeah, I guess that's true. Like, I really don't
have much gear of teams. I'm not a fan of, but like, I do feel like it's far different. If you're a
cheese fan, I think it's far different. If you're a giant sweatshirt, because you just like the
colors, you're like, you know, whatever, it's a throwback logo. You're like, compared to if you
had a Bronco sweatshirt, right? I agree with that. Yeah, there's a huge, I don't think any,
I give I slut a buddy of mine as a cheese fan wearing a Lawrence Taylor jersey. Like, I wouldn't
be like, well, what the hell is that about? Where if they're wearing a John Always jersey, I'd call
the police. Yeah. So yeah, no, I think there's, there's truth in that.
In December, I was as a New York City for a work thing and a bunch of us went to the MLB store
and I, I saw this Pirates hat and it was a Roberto Clemente Pirates hat and it's on the front.
It's it's a standard, you know, Pirates hat, but they had like a cool like Roberto Clemente logo
on the side. And I was like, I'm buying the sat like, this is cool. Roberto Clemente is a legend.
I'm, you know, I went to school near near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania like I was like, yeah,
there's enough connections here for me that this is cool. Like, would I, would I pop it on on
a day where the guardians were playing the Pirates? No. But I think, I think some people, you should
fan how you want to fan, I think, right? And it's like, you want to have a second team or an NFC
team like, I'm not going to begrudge you that. It's entertainment. I think it also too, as I've
gotten older, it's actually fun around this conversation. I was thinking about this last night while
I was watching people like most of my life, I'm about 37, the chiefs have ranged anywhere from
decent to pretty good. And now obviously the last, you know, seven or eight years,
maybe they've been amazing. The last one I was standing and then a couple of years they were
awful. But like for the most part, they've been at least like respect. The devils early on in my
life for a borderline dynasty. And in the last 15 years, they've been total trash. The nicks have
mostly, the nicks actually found a book ended. It's almost like they're good now. They were good
in the 90s and they're awful for 15 years. But I do think it's like, as I get older, you know,
I have two kids, you know, married, I cover the NFL for a living in a way that is much more
extensive than it ever has. When I travel more, I feel like I don't have the time
to watch the nicks 82 times a year. Like when I was a kid, you know, elementary,
middle, high school, even I never miss games. Ever. I watched every nicks game. You know,
the only time I miss a nicks game is I was watching a devil's game. Like I watched every game.
I'm going to point my life now. Like there's no way. Like I just can't, I'd be divorced. I'd
be a horrible father. Like I can't enough football. Thank God it's different because it's, you know,
17 games in Sunday. Like you're good. Plus it's my job. Baseball's been nice for me in the sense
that the A's play late at night. The kids are in bed. The brewers. Once I get out to the East Coast,
you're going to be playing at 8 8 15. That helps. But I find myself more following the nicks,
following the devils. And then in the playoffs, I'm there every night watching all the games. And
I'm keeping up. I know it's going on all year long. I know right where they are in the state. But like,
it's a different kind of fandom for some of these teams. Because and I suspect my kids get older.
I'll get back to watching pretty much every night. But I don't have the time to just
sit down and watch every game. I don't know how people do it. I really don't, unless you're single
or you don't have kids or like, I don't know how anybody should sound and watch this 82 games
of a basketball or a hockey season. And they're not, they're not getting followed for divorce.
Yeah, it's, it's impossible. I mean, it's a, what about the, I mean, the season,
ticket, baseball season, ticket holders to go to every game. Can you imagine?
Yeah, it's, it's rough. We got, we had great show for you guys. Obviously, we're here to talk
about the Kansas City Chiefs. But and there was a, there was a little something. They added a few
players to their roster last week. We haven't got a chance to catch up with Werder. I'm on that.
So we want to talk about that as well. But first, I got to let you know that,
look, Aura Frames is a great way to mix things up with the standard Mother's Day playbook. Guys,
it is, you're listening to the April 30th of your year in a tomorrow. It's May 1st. Mother's Day
is right around the corner. You don't want to screw this one up. Just get it done now. And you won't,
you won't, you won't find yourself in trouble. Come that in court Sunday. And, and, and,
look, a lot of people lean towards flowers, brunch, gift cards, Aura Frames.
I've got an Aura Frame. I've had an Aura Frame. This is a huge win. It is a digital frame. Basically,
you put video on it, slide shows. And it's there in your, in your living room. And, you know,
we all take so many pictures. I, I've got a two year old or he's going to be two next month.
I've got thousands of photos on my phone. And it's nice to be able to go back and look at those
ones that, that you forgot about. And, and, and, and mothers, in this case, they deserve an upgrade.
So, you know, it's got unlimited storage. You can put as many photos on there as you want.
You can even preload them before they ship. So if you're getting a gift for mom, you can put a,
a bunch of pictures of your ugly mug on there, the grandkids, whatever. And when she gets it on
Mother's Day and she opens it up and she plugs it in. It's already got the pictures on there.
She doesn't to figure out the tech, all that stuff. It's a great personalized gift.
You can add a message before it arrives. They include a gift box if you want. And every frame
comes packaged with that no extra, you know, no price tag. And you could share your,
your photos of videos effortlessly. And download their free or app. And then you could text photos
straight to your frame or upload them, which we do for my parents who live in Ohio all the time.
We upload pictures of my son. It's a top rated app. It reached number one in the app store on
Christmas Day 2025. So listen, they were named number one by wire cutter. You could save on these gifts
from mom by visiting or frame.com for a limited time. Listeners get $25 off their best selling
carver, Matt frame. That's the one I have. Just use the code arrowhead. That's a you are a frames.com
promo code arrowhead support the show by mentioning us a checkout terms and conditions apply.
Don't screw up mother's day. Just get an aura frame for her. And you're good. All right.
We're going to talk cheese. I promise. But some things are more important than even the Kansas City
chiefs. And in this case, it is the dairy queen. A long time favorite of our M and I's. We love
the dairy queen. And if you've been listening to this podcast for any amount of time, you also know
we love breakfast cereal. We rank breakfast cereals on the show from time to time.
And I couldn't believe this when I saw it on Twitter. The dairy queen,
Verteram has come out with a cereal line. They have got a cinnamon toast crunch dipped cone.
I'm going to read you the description here. Creamy vanilla soft serve twisted and dipped in a sweet
cinnamon cereal coating complete complete and crunchy cereal bites and topped with
synodust. They've also got a choco frosted donut blizzard classic chocolate frosted donut
pieces mixed with a colorful rainbow sprinkles. And of course, the blizzards of the all-time great.
And then a fruity pebble shake crunchy fruity pebble cereal blended into vanilla soft serve and milk
and whipped topping to finish off. I mean, what are your thoughts on this? This this is I couldn't
believe it. I mean, look groceries cost more nowadays. I don't think they could cost enough that
I wouldn't at least take a shot at this. I'm willing to pay any price. If a box of cereal was like
40 bucks here, I'd be all in. And then so we've got like the cinnamon toast crunch one is the one
that I just feel like I I have to try it. Right. Like above all else, right? Like the the fruity
pebbles ones interesting. I'd like to give it a shot. The cinnamon toast crunch one. It's so
it's what April 30. There's no chance I make it to like Mother's Day without giving that a shot.
Yeah. That just sounds that sounds unbelievable. I think I'm a spokesperson of Boxer. I would
put four dollars to the ice cream come. It is whoever did it's a genius idea. And I'm proud of
that person. I hope their family's proud of them. Mag asked me to pick up Rory's today from day
care. And I'm thinking we might take a little bit of a little thing. You just never got there.
Yeah. I don't know where he is. I got to do this, man. I got to do this. I've been watching
what I'm eating. I hit an all-time low on the scale today. So I'm playing with so much.
Let me be clear about something. Not an all-time low and all-time low since I started watching what
I was eating. Yeah. I was I was 159 pounds one and I'm not that right now. So you know, I'm playing
with house money. I go, I swing. I can get all three of these. I can eat them. It's not going to
it's not going to change things for me. So it might change my life, but it's probably not going to
change my weight. I love Dairy Queen. If anybody who is any connection to Dairy Queen corporate is
listening to this and here's this. Yes. Please get us involved as a sponsor for the pie. I can't
tell you we will be the greatest marketing campaign you've ever had because we'll just do 45
minutes shows talking about Dairy Queen. I will do unspeakable things. It's actually funny. In my
I guess you call it a career. In my career, there have been multiple instances where like we just
like me and yourself or me and I've been randomly talking about like a consuming like a food or
beverage product and it's somehow turned into just free stuff. I remember at one time when I was
at Fanside tweeting out about how I had like a friendly bet with March Madness going on with Hunter
and that turned into McDonald's shown up at the office. Oh, that was incredible. Full blown
showing up at the like McDonald's had rep show up and used our at the time our conference room
in that office. Yeah. To set up an entire spread of McDonald's for everything. Not just for
like Hunter and I for the entire company. Like just here it is. I still I got a putter out of
that. I still have somewhere. Yep. And then I did another podcast years later where we ranked soda
and Mountain Dew is number one and Mountain Dew got in touch with with my coast and I and we're like
here's a whole bunch of free stuff and I've got like a Mountain Dew cooler,
got the flag Maisie got like a shirt out of it. It's unbelievable. So to your point Dairy Queen if
you're out there. This wouldn't be my first time. Okay. And I'd be more than happy that the
rep the absolute hell out of Dairy Queen. I can be bought and I can be bought fairly cheap so just
keep it in mind. I have a vintage teal Dairy Queen sweatshirt that I wear so much I love the Dairy
Queen. I mean it is it is the best ice cream hands down anywhere for my money. I love it. It's
the nostalgic. That's where we used to go after baseball games. Yeah. Winner lose. Go to the Dairy
Queen. You get a blizzard. You get a peanut buster parfait. It just it makes me happier than just
about anything I get that gov when it comes to food is as Dairy Queen blisters. Really what the
tragedy of this podcast is that we have not been sponsored yet by Reese's or General Mills
cereal. That is the lost chance of a lifetime by General Mills. I mean I can't I could think of
a hundred ways that I could cut a promo with with Count Chocula. Okay. You know much Count Chocula
we sold on this podcast. People send us pictures. I know. I know people mail me Count Chocula boxes.
Yeah. My dad the first time I had my dad is like somebody might be trying to poison you like
as you know what we're going to find out. Fair. Yeah. It was for all the days. I wasn't poisoned.
I've had people send me like three boxes of Count Chocula in them. It's just insane but also
awesome. Family size. Oh, cute. Yeah. I mean it's it's so fun. I
know that is absolutely the case. Like we you know this podcast is inspired of beer
outward. Yes. Your company. Yeah. Which of course is in the interest. You see me spilling the grain.
Just well done by me. Now it's food and drink really is where it's at. Like this
this should not be a hard sell here. And yet I feel like it's been it's been overlooked at times.
Yeah. So we've done about 21 minutes on on food and fandom. So let's talk about the
chief. Okay. It's the off season. Give us a break. So let's dive into the draft here.
I was let's just overarching you know when the chiefs traded up. I thought for sure
they were trying to get like a Rubin Bay. But the way the board fell was weird right. I thought
it was like a Rubin Bane or Jordan Tyson. I and I only thought that because
and every mock I ever did which those are BS at the end of the day right every simulation that you
take. Right. It's just it's just a helpful guide. I thought Delane is going to be there at
number nine. Like he's going to be there. And he may not have been and obviously Brett
beach didn't think he would have been or he wouldn't have moved up for him. But I was surprised
by the pick. And I think there was a lot of there was a lot of negativity around chiefs fans
who said they didn't like the way the pick went down not necessarily the pick. So what was your
take when they moved up and then they took Delane where you like yeah this makes a hundred percent
so were you like I don't know if I like this I like the player I don't know if I like the move
how where did you stand on it. So I think you could make first of all and they traded up from nine
to six. I thought it was one of two things. I thought either they were going up for Bane
or I thought they were going to take the lane and I thought it would be Bane. I thought it was
going to be Rubin Bay. Just because Richard kind of five barely got it too. I thought they might
be trying to get that last edge rusher before there was another kind of drop off to the second tier.
And I also thought it could be corner because with Jermod McCoy it became clear by the draft that he
wasn't going to be a first round pick with the with the health issues. I thought okay look you know
who's the next corner like Colton Hood maybe or or maybe it's Chris Johnson out of out of
San Diego State who ended up being at 27. I thought it'd be one of those two guys and I've
seen him that being man sort of like. I have a little bit of a different take on this. I know
G stands are going absolutely Chernobyl level nuts on Twitter about the fact that they they traded up
to get him. And I will tell you a couple things right now that I I felt in the moment. Number one
I think you could make a very strong case he is the cleanest prospect in this entire draft. He may
not be the best in terms of like I think Jeremiah love his best player in this draft but I could say
here in our go I mean Jeremiah love is a non-premium position. Mendoza I don't think is the number one
quarterback in a lot of drafts but wasn't this draft. All those offensive linemen I mean you could
talk about Fano Maui. No they might all have to be in guards. In fact now I know I think he's going
to be a guard. Arvel Reese I love Arvel Reese. The only thing with him is like what position is he
and he's 20 years old. So there's a question of you know okay well what is he going to become
belly with his run game, bane with his arm. I don't know that there's a single red flag about
Mansour Delay. I don't know what it is. He's got no issues off the field. He can play any style you
want to play. He's brilliant on the field when you watch him. He is he understands everything
is happening in front of him. He he's a physical guy. He can run up sub four four. He's got he's
got good side. I have no idea what it would be. I don't know what the issue would be. And before
the draft happened like I know I was going to be grading all the picks in real time rounds one two
three for Sports Illustrade. And so what I did was I wrote blurbs like 80 players for the draft
and then as they got picked I wrote you know okay how does this guy fit with this team and then
fill that up. With Delay and my blurb was essentially look this guy is one of the best players
in this draft and he's going to be a home run. Like I mean I'm obviously paraphrasing that
but it was to me it was a pick that I had a really hard time being upset with now. If you want
to sit there and talk about hey don't love to think of up a third and a fifth. My answer to that
would be fine. You feel that way. I don't I don't ever care. I do have a fifth round pick to three
of them. I don't care. It really is about giving up a third round pick. And if that's what it
cost them to get the guy that they wanted that's fine to me. Yeah sure I don't love to have 74
but I don't have a problem with that. Like I just think sometimes we overvalue these mid to late
round picks. Look your draft usually usually is going to be determined by the first two guys you take
maybe the first three and of course in this case that she sets three to top 40 picks very rarely
is your draft to find by guys you're taking like that does happen. Kelsey was a third round pick
Tyree kills a fifth round pick. Obviously there are reasons for Tyree kill but usually it's the first
and second round the kind of term whether or not your draft is good or bad. Yeah it's weird we
if you've been listening to this podcast this off season. I have been talking about the Browns
number six and the cheese moving up for a third round pick for weeks and that's exactly what
happened and a lot of people nobody wanted to move up everybody I talked to they're like don't
move up stay at nine you're going to get a good player. We don't want to give up that third round pick
and the argument I was making was if they think they can get a blue chip guy a pass rusher I was
mainly leaning towards a pass rusher right or a guy that maybe is so talent like an R of L Reese
that I was fine with giving up that third round pick because I was like look it's a third round
it's easier to replace a guy you're going to get in the third round usually then it is to get a blue
chip guy and so I was fine with them moving up I was hoping that they'd move up for a pass rusher
or if they really believed in carnal tape going and getting carnal tape to give my homes a weapon
I was very big on giving my homes a weapon carnal tape was gone Bailey was gone
Reese went number five yeah it would have been interesting to see if the giants took sunny styles
or Jordan Tyson what the chiefs would have done would they still have traded up I think they
probably would have it is the pick our Val Reese in that case rather than man sort of lane I don't
know we'll never know probably unless Brett Beach decides to tell us but he's not going to say that
because he's he's got me it's sort of laying on his team now so he's not going to be like well
we're all Reese was there we would have taken him he's not going to do that so
I'm okay with it uh they just have to be right the thing for me is that when you move up
to number six I'm expecting that you're getting in all pro like this he should be a multiple
time all pro and if he's not and he's just a good corner like you know like he's to Brandon
flowers he never won an all pro did he okay yeah he's a good player right yeah like yeah if he
ends up being Brandon flowers this is not a disaster but it's not a great way yeah but I'd
also put it this way if that same thing if they picked him at nine would you feel the same way
it depends on who else was on the board um you know I would but I would not feel as strongly
because you didn't give up any of the extra capital to go yeah you took the best player on your
board fine this is a move this is an aggressive move and they had a lot of holes in needs and they
felt a lot of them um and so that third round pick there were there were some really talented
depth guys and and I think the other issue that a lot of people have with the pick was that they
they feel like the chiefs have this superpower of getting really good corners and value and starters
in later rounds of the draft the people are looking at Chris Johnson and Ponds and guys like
that and they're like hey man like we why don't we just take one of these guys later and get a guy
we're not going to be able to get like a pass rusher uh later in the draft so I would say one
thing that I think because I've I've had a million people say this man I went back and looked like
this idea that like they just take corners constantly they're just constantly finding these guys
late in the draft like the only proven corner that a beach is ever drafted passed the first round
who's been really good is Joe and watching like now no way it might be I like him but I mean
you know the jury's out what Jerry's need was a he might he was he was a beach pick but he was
because when did they draft and they drafted him 20 20 he was a beach pick so that's not fair
they they founds need they found watch which is a great hit rate like to find two guys that way
but they for every one of those guys there's also nazi johnson and there's Joshua Williams
and there's I mean I there are a few other guys who didn't even like make a ripple in the league that
they drafted didn't work out come all hadn't there's another one um the points well taken like they
have found very good value and of course if no Williams works out now we're talking about three
guys you know from from third round on but the best guy they took was McDuffie in the first round
they took and I granted it was in the money jump for him but they was right the deal but third
and fourth round picked to go get him like I I just feel like and by the way how many times was
that sentence uttered in the four years after world like oh well you know they get up a third
and a fourth I mean my feeling also covers my my thoughts on this number number one I have
spent the entire offseason from free agency to this wrath saying the same thing about choose
I do not care about the quantity of guys they bring in I care about the quality they do not need
to be with the dolphins or in the draft and draft 13 guys they don't have 13 roster spots to give
out I know they went six and eleven and I bristle with the idea that oh it was just some flukest
thing and it wasn't a flukest thing they yes part of it was injuries but part of it was they just
weren't very good they were just not a very good football team last year they they fell off in certain
ways this team I think needed to add more than depth more than the 50 second guy anything they
needed to add guys who matter when they're on the field what does the other team do and in
free agency I thought they added one of those guys with Walker when that guy's on the field you
need to play the chiefs differently in the draft I think a guy like Mansword Elaine is again I
thought before they took me to one of five best players in strap in my opinion and I wrote this
in my barb I was just looking it up I think he has potential to be a pro ball and all pro player this
year I think he's that talented and so if he's a really good corner he's a top five to eight corner
in the NFL that changes the way you can play defense you can just put that guy one on one with
T Higgins and so okay he's eliminated and now we're going to double chase you know or whatever
the case may be I think there does come a certain point that the chiefs started to lose those
blue chip guys the last year watching them you have my homes you have Creed and Trace Smith
Simmons very well might turn into one of those players you have Chris Jones and they had Mcduff
you last year but man the roster fell off a cliff after that in a lot of places I feel like
adding Walker adding the lane you know what we'll see about Gilman I feel like basically a place
is cook we'll see about Woods and Armation Thomas but I'm going to tell you right now to me
if they're going to be good this year like Super Bowl good one to two of those details I mean they
got to hit like they've got to be impactful players now they both they both don't have to be but
one of them has to be one of them's got to be a guy that by week eight week I know they guys
probably the other thing and if they landed that and the lanes good and walkers didn't that's a lot
that's a lot between having rice for seemingly a full year worthy hopefully not hurt on your long
my homes back how like you're a much different football team but it's you know it's going to be
a process for them this is a lot of new talent coming into the building they're going to have to
make it all mesh yeah and I think one thing that gave me a little bit more heart the more that I
thought about it was it's disappointing I think for a lot of chiefs fans too because
we gave up McDuffie and then we got to Lane and so it was like ah yeah like we we wanted more
we wanted a different position but I would look at it as the chiefs gave up McDuffie to get
to Lane and Ken Walker because the money that they cleared the difference in pay that they would have
had to have paid keeping McDuffie and able them to sign a guy like Ken Walker and then replace
McDuffie with the Lane in the draft and the Lane if he reaches his ceiling because he's going to be
a better boundary corner might be a little bit more valuable than a Trent McDuffie like if he could
get to McDuffie's level even just in terms of talent right would you rather have Delane or would
you rather have McDuffie well I mean it was I'd rather blame the standpoint didn't use the
hell watch cheaper for next five years I mean it's I think that's the thing that gets lost in
this too is to your point about walk they saved a hundred million guaranteed with McDuffie
I think the world to Trent McDuffie there's no way I wouldn't pay them a hundred million
dollars guaranteed it's wouldn't that's not a knock on him but I get to tell you and I mean this
I don't know that there's a player in the league that's not a quarterback that I'd give a hundred
million dollars to guarantee I mean Miles Garrett yeah you know I mean we're talking a half
dozen guys Justin Jefferson made like as much as I think a Trent McDuffie I also think quietly there
was a little bit of consternation and not not they stand off his way but like where is he going to
play I think the cheese love to play him inside I think he want to play outside and I get it look
it's harder to physically play in the slot you are taking on more run fits you are blitzing it's
more physical you know you're not going to last as long in the slot and all I could especially
if you're a smaller corner McDuffie is smaller compared to some of the bigger guys out there
Delane I feel like he is a he is a boundary corner not saying he can never put him inside but that
guy is going to play outside that guy is a boundary corner in the way that you know Peshad Breelin
was in a way that Lajarious need that need played both but eventually kicked outside that he was like
I think of the chiefs that does clear the deck a little bit in terms of like okay this guy
and by the way last year if you go look at the snap charts and the snap count break I mean
Duffie was a boundary corner for them was there there's slot corner last year's tomorrow corner
okay so and that obviously was a train rack and they went out and they got coho and they got
Kennedy in the fourth round this secondary in a weird way I don't know that it's just talented
because it's not like Delane is a rookie even if he's great he's a rookie Watson if you have if
you want to say Delane replaces Watson is a rookie okay well listen coho is not McDuffie and no
Williams and Christian fault they're not McDuffie this secondary though might fit better together
like there might be a little bit more of coho's an actual slot guy Kennedy is a slot guy
no Williams is a pure boundary corner Delane at to this point he's a pure boundary corner so is
Christian fault a loaded Gilman is a is a safety who fits their scheme to a tee Connor is a
fine safety he's a terrible slot corner but he's fine it's like I want you know the
Kennedy enrolling Wallace give you those guys who can kind of play a little bit of safety if you
need them to but also you play slot well I think this secondary is not as talented overall
although my growing to being so I think it actually the pieces fit a little bit better than last
years we're felt like they were always moving guys around they never really had the fine rolls
all right let's let's move on to just the approach to the draft defense defense defense defense
the chiefs have said that that wasn't the plan that they weren't like we're going in we're
taken all defense the first four picks that's just the way that the board ended up falling so
that's what they did to you agree with that approach the one thing that drove me nuts was
we've been talking all season about the state of the wide receiver room we don't feel really
strongly about it wild card and marshy rice an unproven player so far in Xavier worthy
Thornton you know he's looking for a fifth year break out here like that's probably not going to
happen so you're you're you're staring down the barrel the end of Travis Kelsey potentially
marshy rice given his walking papers after the season and you're looking at Xavier worthy as
your wide receiver one you're not feeling great you're in this draft you got two first
drawn picks you got a number 40 you're not getting anybody for Patrick wrongs nobody
well listen it's a fair question I think some of that is the way the draft fell but also to like
I I didn't Gary's point on the screen like I think they know this is going to take two years
I mean this is not just going to be they're going to fix this all one just fell swoop the two
minutes and now I would point out that because of who your quarterback is and I do think they have
a talented roster you know they head on a couple of these these early picks they could
contend for some bullies here because right now look around the lake I mean who's the team in the
AFC you know if that team just slide out better than the cheese and I'd be shocked that she's
being in a pot of game nobody but I do think right now they are clearly short of flavor I don't
even know how you can argue that they're not like they you know I'm great with them a quarterback
to their credit the running back situation went from horrendous to really good and heartbeat
the tight end room scares me a little but I think great bounces back at least some from what
he was here going Kelsey it was credit still a top five tight end in the league so okay you know
fine I'll live with that until the wheels fall off love the offensive line but
that receiver room man that scares the hell out of me because you're talking about
three guys who are essentially the starters in Thornton Rice and Worthy who are I'm sorry never
healthy or rarely so I mean Thornton his entire career in New England is Marvandry worthy
last year to his credit played 14 games and played through a lot of injuries but I was beat up
oil rice has played I don't have for I think 12 games total over the last two years
part of that suspension part of that injuries like even if they're really healthy by their
standards this year they're probably combining to miss like 8 to 10 games they just are so who the hell
is your fourth thought Jalen Royals can't be the answer after they basically refused to play him
last year despite how terrible they were they were playing judo smith shoes to roll lentlessly
over Jalen Royals even when they were hopelessly out of the playoffs
Niko Ramiyo and Cyrus Allen you're fit the wrong big dirty other guys right now like you I'm sorry
if there is one bullet left in the chamber so to speak in this offseason it's got to be at
the receiver has to be like Keenan Allen Stefan digs if his legal issues are cleared up and
and look maybe you want to stay away from those complain I get it but I would say Stefan digs
is an option with the cheese because they let's face illegal issues have never been a problem for that
team um I tirey kill is he going to be able to play I don't know you know who knows and then there's
I hesitate but like with the chief's flow to seven ground pick the nighters for Brandon Iyuk
that seems insane but the cheese has done crazier things and he's 28 in a former first round pick
and he costs them 1.2 million this year like Debo Samuel's still out there they need somebody
who can play a wider receiver because right now you're one pulled hamstring away from
it's being a disaster and at the TV maybe I mean look I also um caps lock is an option uh but looks
it's I'm not excusing Andy Reid but let's be real man I mean if Xavier worthy pulls a hamster
hamstring who the hell's coming into the game who's doing it is I love to pick a jalen royals
but like they literally wouldn't play him last year they're like no he's never seen the field
that tells me they don't think he's very good or they don't trust him like Niko Romihio is a return
specialist period sire sound is a fifth rounds receiver like they are and what do they have a
situation where for two weeks two of those guys are oh my god I mean they don't have to run
them all 50 times I don't know what the hell they would do they need to go out and sign someone
someone who can reliably go out and catch a pass even if it's just a hey you're gonna go out
you're gonna play 30 staffs again okay fine you know it's like when they had the Andre Hopkins
like someone who also by the way is a phrase someone who can catch a football that you're not
terrified of putting it out on the field I think fans they so overestimate potential at the
wide receiver position like jalen royals is a fourth round pick you guys he's not gonna turn
into tyrie kill he's not gonna turn into Michael Pittman probably right like he he's a fourth round
pick if you're lucky he's a special teams contributor and a guy that is a as a wide receiver
for for you probably and you know when I see people talking about what about cold well is rass
score like he didn't get drafted like look it happens it happens right but I mean like when you
when you like the fourth round picks like okay almond Ross St. Brown he was a fourth round pick so it
it it happens sure right roll I am that's insane I I asked chatchee PT right I was like what who
are the most who are the most successful in the modern era like who are the most successful fourth
round ride receivers I got a list here of Andre Reed John Stahlworth Cliff Branch Brandon Marshall
Derek Mason Roy Green almond Ross St. Brown and Jericho Coetry like a lot of those guys are from
the 70s right they just they're not they're not just turning out wide receiver ones in the fourth
round every year and UDFA wide receiver ones like the chiefs if you don't think they have a huge
problem at receiver I get if everything works out Rishi rice is healthy he's motivated he stays
out of prison then great you can get by the season if that happens if Xavier worthy takes the
leap forward if Travis Kelsey is at least as good as he was last year and you have a running game
and you have a real wide receiver coach now if all of that goes right great if and literally
anything goes wrong you might have a really big problem if Xavier worthy actually is people
are just so mad at me every time I see that so far he's McCall Harman they're like he's so he's
so much more talented than McCall Harman I'm like look it doesn't matter right he is what he is
through two years the production you have gotten from Xavier worthy is McCall Harman I don't care
if he got injured last year and he was playing hurt it doesn't matter what matters is what you do
on the field your career is your career potential all day that that didn't that gave us more than
six wins last year that didn't get Patrick Rome's help that didn't make him catch the deep balls
like he is what he is I hope I'm not saying and throw dirt on his grave but what I am saying so far
you haven't gotten more out of this guy than you got out of McCall Harman if he isn't
you're okay had his first two years it will not pick up his fifth year Roger yeah that's it you
want the truth that's the truth and I think he is talented I thought after his work year he was
going to be terrific and then he got hurt for he replays into the season like I can see a scenario
where he he has 600 yards is your I can see scenario he has 900 and you're like okay yeah he really
came on but let's just be honest about this they are one injury away one injury from to type
Juan Thornton where you're like you're screwed like I don't know who else playing you know people
think he's Jerry Rice because he caught a couple deep balls last year he's a nice little he's a nice
player but like he's that's what he is if they're not you're not running your offense you're
tyquan Thornton you're not I'm sorry and that's by the way that's fine like you him being
an elite guy down the field which last year he was that's awesome like that's a great thing to
have in the back pocket but they weren't throwing anything but go balls to him I mean that's pretty
much what he was catching and that is a nice thing to have but it's low percentage their offense
is largely going to be run through three guys Kenneth Walker Rashee Rice and Travis Kelsey that
is going to be and by the way that's great like if you're running your offense through those three
guys I mean those are three really good players okay the problem becomes if Rice gets hurt
or if worthy goes down and then they can just squat down on these underneath route now you
got a problem now you got a big problem like to me if I'm the chiefs okay I would I would make a move
for someone at receiver sooner or later if that's Keenan Allen great if that's if that's going
out and getting Debo Sam like I don't love Debo Sam at this point it's not he's Jerry Rice
can bring anybody else out from that roster behind those three guys like I only so Debo Sam can make
a play do something I mean that's where they do I mean maybe you even swing a trade maybe
you're going to make it a trade like I'm not talking about AJ Brown okay I they would have to give up
and send him out and then pay him and I don't know I mean you know you'll look around the league
and yeah is there is there a trade to be made is there somebody out there who you could sit there
and say okay you know that guy makes some sense I'd have to sit there and really think about it
you know I know Brian Thomas Jr was kind of the guy everybody was talking about for a while I mean
I'll give you look I'll give you a guy that I think would be a one and done scenario for them
Calvin Ridley now he's 32 do I want Calvin Ridley in a normal world and not really
um but last year with the Titans he did nothing he had played in seven games at three hundred
three yards a year prior to that on a team that had no offense get a thousand yards
is he worth I mean you're flipping nothing for that guy nothing like maybe it's worth
giving them a you know nothing pick at me if you trade for him post June 1
now they're eating seven point five million and you're getting them from five point four million
like maybe it's worth it but the point is they're going to have to do something I'll give you
another one and this would be more costly you call the Cardinals up and cheer them off from
Martin Harris and Junior I would 100% like what are you giving up for him I don't know you know
maybe maybe that one of the one of your two third rounders next year with that do it my guess is
they probably would want a second and I probably I wouldn't give that to him but like
that guys are rookie had eight hundred eighty five yards and eight touches I understand last
year at six hundred eight yards played in 12 games I'll bet on a 23 year old who was a top five
pick all day long like to me that's a call making I'm calling the Vikings and I'll admit up front
I'd be a little terrified of making this called Jordan Addison like last year six hundred ten yards
three touchdowns it was the worst year he's had a year before that eight seventy five and nine
touchdowns year before that is rookie nine hundred and all I've noticed that sounds like I'd call
them up do you want the Rams third round pick for Jordan Addison because a guy like that changes
things big time big time like now all of a sudden you've got that you got top talent I just think
if there is anything that they need right now it is absolutely a receiver if they would move
them I would I would absolutely go after Marvin Harrison Junior and I'm going to show you this
because I know you'll appreciate it I stagged this nice the other day you'll notice there a little
little number number two out of twenty Marvin Harrison Junior here so former Ohio State guy
very fun car I've gone down the the card collecting rabbit hole and and the wall it is significantly
lighter there's a there's a target on the way to Rory's daycare and it's just like I'm just like
walk out with the blocks of cards and it's not good um well let me ask you this who is your
favorite pick from this chiefs draft the line I think the line is going to be all pro I I think if
you're factoring in value or Mason Thomas is really I just like the fact I got somebody who's
a much different part in the normally get they're all about their they're on athletic 270 pound
edge rushers I love the fact they drafted a guy who's basically like a like a just a straight
up linebacker which he essentially is he's a stand up rush linebacker who's going to be the hand
that they're here for the chiefs at times I love the fact they're all like yeah we don't
carry a son of 40 past you see that guy turn a corner like we're going to get that guy
so I love his talent and the way he plays and I grew up on Derek Thomas like that is the way
you rush the passer um but I think the lane is going to be fantastic like I I would genuinely be
shocked if he's not really good like maybe he doesn't earn a role pro maybe he's a pro boy however
I would be shocked if we're sitting here in four years like yeah he stinks I I would I would
just before this happens yeah and I'm I'm with Jay Fern in the comments it's it's Emma Johnson
for me and I am I really wanted them to take a running back I know they got Ken Walker
this is just a guy sometimes I feel like NFL teams get to they get too cute when they're
drafted players and they ignore production it what some of these guys do in college I think that
that this is and that leads into my next question too about Bane but like you look at what this guy
did in college he just absolutely lit it up I'm not saying he's going to come in and he's going to
be Emmett Smith but what I am saying is he's an exciting runner he can do a lot and I we were talking
about heading into the draft like boy if something happens to Ken Walker you got for Shard Smith
back there that's it like you're going to need somebody and I think this was a really great value
pick for them I think you know with the exception obviously of Jeremiah Love he could end up being
the second best running back in this draft what does that mean and a shallow running back draft we
don't know but he had unbelievable production look at his all-purpose yards he played in the big 10
it's not like he was playing you know a D3 or something like that and rack and up those stats so I'm
excited about him and I think in the chiefs new philosophy behind run it which sounds like they really
want to run behind creed behind trade behind Kingsley I think he'll fit right in there nicely some
cited about that but but again we're talking about NFL teams looking at some of the measurable isn't
saying well yeah I know he had an incredibly pretty I was like I think he was the most productive
running back in the nation but we don't like some of these things so we're just good we're not
going to take him high that brings us to Rubit Bane who went into the college football playoff and
ruined my team season Ohio State completely wrecked our season were you surprised this guy
fell to number 15 I was I was um look I think the RNY thing really turns some teams off um there are
things I can just tell you straight up not so much about Bane just you have arms under 32 inches
they will just take you off their board automatically 30 and seven eights is miniscule it is tiny tiny
in terms of RNY through online been defensive or offensive so I think there were some teams
it's just by rules like he's we're not going to bet on him we're we're not we're going to let
somebody else try to make history with the guy with that true RNY now all of the mindset listen
that guy was the best player in the college football playoff he was unbelievable and he has a long
track record and it's not like his arms are 34 inches then all of a sudden you know chopped off
three inches was about yeah so I'm going to play now I think Rubit Bane is going to be a very good
player I thought that going to the draft I thought the chiefs might take him I would have been
thrilled that they took him I'm not upset that they didn't because like the lane was one of my
favorite players in the draft but I I do think he's going to be good I think it's a fair concern
that a guy has that short arms at the NFL level I do think that's fair but I I also
think that tape should matter more than anything else and when you're watching that guy play he can
play he can play regardless what his arm like this if he ends up being an all pro player taken at
15 by the box how bad of a look is that for for Brett Beach if he traded up and he took a corner
back when that guy was sitting there on the board and would have been there at nine that's
good the corner back yes I mean I'm serious like it turns out to be Trent McDuffy that's not a bad look
I don't I don't really care um you know I I had stayed thinking and thought stuff because like
the chiefs of drafted guys were unbelievable pixelating rounds and then other teams because it's
like you're just you know what you take who you take and how good is your pick I mean that
to me is all it's about and if the chiefs end up you know if man sort of lanes really good
now that we're going to care but if if the lane stinks or he's average and bane's going to
propels then yeah you're going to wear it because a lot of people want to ruin bane and and so yeah
I mean that would absolutely be a look it's kind of like the things taking Jordan Tyson
everybody in the world knew we're coming in he's got a ton of ton of talent he's got a ton of
injury history like if he goes out and gets hurt a ton that's on you man you knew going in that
guy's got injury history so you know like that's the risk you run listen everybody at this time
in that draft everybody's being so hey he's got all the potential in the world but you know what most
these guys are not going to realize it's just a truth it's a reality of it you know at some point
those names you can put on a card they define the people who chose them and for whatever the reason
health fit talent want to do you know work or it's not but if the chief if the lane ends up
being a really good player I don't think they're going to look back and worry about passionate
ruin back I they've had such a need to to get a premium pass pressure for so long I I think my
head will explode if he does because I'm a really really great player because you know you can only
guard one guy at corner and all that stuff but hey let's see how it works out I will say this
there are analysts out there that think armace and Thomas is the second best pass pressure in the
draft and if he turns out to be and he turns out to be good and they got him where they got him
and the lane turns out and that's the thing about this draft that I do like is if these picks if
these first three four picks work out for them look out they're laying the groundwork for really
good defense this year but in particular next year and that gives them the opportunity like we
mentioned with a potential two-year rebuild or retool if things do work out if rice rice knows
hey man I got it I got to get out there I have to perform at a high level because I'm I'm trying
to get a contract either here or somewhere else and there's a lot of concerns about me and this
is my chance to cash in you know he was a second-round pick like he's he's not he's not and he
has all these legal bills to pay so you know he really needs yeah financially to have the best
season there is nobody more motivated on that team yeah imagine then we should rise yeah he's got
to do it I mean there is a mill about a hundred million reasons you ought to be motivated yeah
was if we know anything about the cheese he'll he'll have 1,400 yards this year and we'll have
the most hotly debated situation of all time this all season do you pay for she rice
that'll be that'll be fine yeah and if they do hit on these I do think Brett Vich has set the team
up for another potential diagnostic run which is part of the deal here with Patrick Mahomes
