Don't have to do anything.
No opener for the Kansas City Chiefs this season.
And I'm JC Pearson with the league really start the season with replacement refs.
We'll talk about that.

We will tell you more about that later in the episode.
Here's what's on tap.
The owners meetings away, off and away for the NFL, what we learned and how it pertains
to what we'll see on the field as far as the competition committee scheduling and beyond.
No opening day trip for Kansas City.
That is according to Clark Hunt.
We'll see what the guys and the fellas think about that one as well as replacement rep,
replacement refs potentially making impact on the play as well as some comparisons for
cheese players in 2026.
Darren, you all right.
You good, man?
Yeah, I'm good, man.
I'm frozen.
Yeah, I don't know.
You know what it is?
It's that shirt.
It's shirt.
It's shirt.
It's shirt.
It's shirt.
You know what?
It's shirt, the apartment complex, man.
This thing's a blitz, so we got it stuff.
But I'm good.
Okay, let's go off and away with these NFL owners meetings.
I'll plenty of headlines, but the one I want to kick off today's episode with is actually
the one you were most passionate about in our chat, Darren.
An 18th game coming to the NFL.
This is something that has been long rumored, long talked about, now potentially back on
the table.
I want you to kick us off on that.
What are your thoughts on potentially adding an 18th regular season game for the
Chiefs and more?
I mean, I don't like it from a perspective, you know, for the players.
I mean, you know, the owners are going to get what they want and they're going to get
what they're going to get.
It is, it is going to happen just a matter of wind.
They would prefer it happen in a negotiated manner where they can schedule it to start
next season, not this season coming up at the following season, so an 18th game can
push them to the Super Bowl in Atlanta, that's going to be taking place a big over president
of the day weekend at that time, which is one of the reasons why they have not announced
the date she had for the Super Bowl in 2027 because they're hoping to get that 18th game
worked in there.
Obviously, from a player's perspective, you know, we've heard players over the last
couple of seasons be more receptive to, you know, 18th game, the hour talk about, well,
give us an extra buy, you know, to me, the players are looking at it at a minimalistic
thing versus, you know, the big picture of what, you know, what the cost is going to be.
The owners know that that's more money, you know, more inventory for the networks and
you know, we're talking about it more as relates to, you know, as one of the announcements
that came out of that is that now Friday, they're not considered a short week.
So they're going to be planning, planning more games to play on Friday and on holidays
that fall off Friday and stuff like that as well as things give a need.
So for the NFL, you know, to me, it's like, I think it's like, you would say it, pigs
get fat and halls get slaughtered and that's what the league seems to be doing.
We're trying to go to 18 games.
JC, you played in the league.
It's all about the, all about the mighty dollar, whatever happened to player safety.
When we are so concerned about that, you know, changed the rules because we're worried
about player safety now, we're adding more games and, you know, when does this stop?
You know, and then they want to add more overseas games to travel, you know, the players
are just, you know, just cattle, you know, we all knew what, when I was playing that, you
know, I mean, they didn't really care about the players.
It's all about, you know, the mighty dollar, how much they can get, you know, by using
you basically.
And then that's what they're doing and, you know, what's to say, you know, it's going
to stop at 18.
It was what 12 way back then went to 16.
I don't know if we went to 14, but it was 14 and 16, yeah.
You know, and then, but it was 12 way back, though, and, you know, so I mean, where, where
does this stop?
You know, as long as the, the, the TV people are going to keep paying the money, they'll
keep adding games.
They'll keep finding a way to add the games.
And the only pushback is the NFL PA and it doesn't seem like they took the opportunity
to try to change their course either.
And it's a two-party negotiation, right?
The CBA's through 2032, if I remember right.
Yes.
It's 2030.
2030.
Okay.
It just feels like I agree that donors are going to get what they want.
And I think partially, it's because they're not getting enough real pushback that we've
seen over years in other industries.
This industry doesn't seem to have that toss it back.
And I'm sure the players are going to be upset and frustrated.
And I think they have to go back to themselves and their representation about how they try
to combat what they don't feel is good for them in their sport.
People want to know how this impacts the Chiefs.
This is a Chiefs show.
Here's Chiefs owner Clark Hunt on 18 games.
The quote is here from the SPN, quote, growing the number of international games that's something
we're very supportive of from a scheduled dynamic having 18 games would facilitate that.
Look, the Chiefs are all about, you know, this kind of growing the brand, growing the
numbers for getting as many eyeballs as possible.
I'm trying to find the right word to describe that was not player safety anymore, right?
That was the big thing.
And for a while, the player safety and, you know, change all these rules and, you know,
take care of the players, players, but now adding all these games and more weeks, more
games, more travel.
I mean, you know, where does it stop?
Yeah, obviously it's not about the players anymore.
It's about the owners and the money and that's why they want to go overseas so much because,
you know, they want to try to grow it internationally and, you know, kind of be the real football
of the world and not soccer.
And Robert Kraft, and Robert Kraft has been one of the owners who have been out front
of me.
He's just been blatant about it.
We want 18 games, we want every, if they get 18 games to JC's point and I think Ryan
might have mentioned earlier, they will play every NFL team will play a game out of
the country because to build an international brand, which is another reason why they want
to 18 games.
Again, it's, you know, the, the, one of the, one of the, one of the owners of the, uh,
Earth says daughter, uh, talked about how, you know, players of course, they'll give
more revenue.
Of course, all they can think about is the money, but they're not thinking about, as JC
talked about, the players safety aspect because when it was, you know, at most of the time,
I think it's always been like 20 games or whatever because you had, when it was 14, when
it was a 14 game season, you had six preseason games and then it went from, from four to 16,
uh, and then of course three to 17.
But if you think about it, a lot of fans don't really care for the preseason because you're
not getting a lot of the starters anyway.
So of course, if they feel like that we can cut it down to two now, we got the starters
for 18 games.
Now, the question is, you know, what were the players association given max for the players
to play in 17 games, but then, you know, but then now you got to figure out, okay, you
know, where would you, if that were to happen, where would you take that game off because
obviously, literally from, you know, from week one all the way to the end, you're always
in a jockey in position, you know, uh, you know, for first place or whatever in your
division.
So you really can't afford to even take time off or to take a game off, you know, send
them meet at 17 or 18 game threshold.
So, I mean, this is, this is the situation that people ask how does it affect the cheese?
Well, Clark Hunt is one of the people who was in favor of 18 games.
So that's how it affects the cheese.
And if the league goes to it, they'll have to do it as well, which means you're either
going to get like super goals after Valentine's Day or we'll be talking about July football,
either of which I think is good for the players.
And Ton is the name of the board game I was looking for.
You were playing Katan before Ryan.
It's like a territory game.
You kind of try to acquire as many territories as possible.
That's kind of how I feel the NFL is doing right now.
You know, they've, they've looked at the guy's risk, dude, risk, yes, you know, anything
that would have got us in trouble, any game where you look at the board and you try to
get as many properties as possible.
Helm and Opel is just like that as well.
I mean, the league, the NFL, they've looked at the sports calendar and said, all right,
Christmas, we like that, you know, we want a little bit of that.
We like what these European leagues are doing over there.
We want a little bit of that.
And Clark Hunt, I mean, when we do have the stadium talks, I don't think y'all hear us
when we say, this is not the chiefs of old.
They're not doing things the way they traditionally used to do and the way their father used to
do it.
And this is how our franchise and all that, the uniforms, maybe, yeah.
But as far as the business side of things, they're trying to acquire as many new fans
as possible.
The chiefs are going to get as many more new fans that they will to replace all the old
fans based off the dynasty and the run and potentially expansion into Europe and beyond.
It doesn't surprise me to hear that he, Clark Hunt, is at the forefront of pushing for
not only 18 games, but international games as well because he has been at the forefront
of kind of expanding his territories, playing Katana, if you will.
And he's got the faces of the league, so to speak, with Pat and with Travis, worldwide,
you know, with obviously as soon to be wife and all that.
But so those guys are the, you know, they're internationally known and the faces.
So you're going to take advantage of it.
But, you know, but the flip side is that you would think that the owners will listen to
their players, especially some of their star players because I believe it was just
two years ago, two years ago, when the chiefs were doing their play on every day of the
week, including the holidays, Chris Jones was complaining about, you know, about the
days that they were not having an off and that, you know, that they play on the, you
know, they play on the Saturday.
You got to turn around and play on the waves and then you got to play on Christmas and
Christmas Eve and think, so the players, you're going to listen to them.
Oh, obviously not that they don't give a dang what, and the thing is, because I know
Aaron talked about this being my, this isn't the chiefs of old because the money is so
much different to what it was in the 80s, 90s and even the 2000s with, you know, with
the explosion of the dot com and the internet and the streaming and stuff.
And now you, you know, you've been trying with the gambler stuff.
There is just so much money that that's all they think about.
I mean, they can, you know, and I know, I know we don't have talked about it all, but
the fact that teams can, can, can sell a portion of their, you know, of their, of their
team, their private equity, I mean, that's just more money in the owner's pockets that
they just feel.
I mean, so the question that I remember asking Rodger to do at the, at his press conference,
I think about, I think it might have been three years ago, and let me pick that name
up.
You just dropped hold up one second.
Yeah.
Yeah, but, but at his press conference, I asked him how much money is too much money
for the NFL in the owners and, and this was, this was coming off of, I think when the
cheese hosted the Miami dolphins and the game was on peacock, you know, a lot of people
could not watch the game unless, you know, let's, let's subscribe to, and it was a
playoff game.
So I'm like, how much money are you trying to get out of the customers that they have
to pay for something they, they, they, they, they're used to get for free?
I think word to JC's point as well about having the faces of the franchise.
It's like kind of having a high deck of cars like you got the face cars, right?
You feel like you can play to your hand.
I think on the other side of that, the chiefs understand that this window is special.
This is my home's Kelsey window where they're printing money where Taylor Swift is at the
games and they got all these new fans.
I mean, hell, there were 20, 30, 40 years of not this.
I don't want to say darkness or barren or, or dry days, but it wasn't what it is now.
So if I'm a business man, if I'm on the business side, I'm pushing them to say, you know what?
Let's make the most of this.
If we're on this run, let's get as much as we can get it.
I, I, I want to think the human side of them understands that 18 games isn't the best
for the body and it might not be the best for the product as well long term, but to
Derek's point, you know, cash, cash rules, everything around me.
You know, it is money talks and everything else walks and they have to be prepared too
because if they keep pushing it beyond 18 and JC's writing gets 20 or the future, that's
what it holds.
And I have teams right now that can't keep guys on the field, the, the entire scenario
of philosophers, chargers, you're going to have every team that is going to be missing
stars in some of those games because they're not going to be able to keep up with 20 games.
And that hurts product overall, which you know what they'll do is they'll just increase
the roster size so that you can have that, you know, they'll do whatever they have to
do to put a product on the field.
And you know, they don't care about individual teams, they know that, you know, some teams
are going to be healthy.
Some teams aren't.
But as long as they put a game on and trust me, I went through, through that strike one
year as long as they put, yes, as long as they put a game on, they get their money.
The players are the ones that don't get paid.
They don't care about the quality of the game, the product or anything.
Now, ideally, they should, you know, and ideally, they should care about the players.
But hey, like we've been saying, all $90 rules, everything, especially in this, in this
business.
I don't want to be someone who gets into the minutiae, but you know, but I'm looking
at some of the comments.
The problem is at the end of the day is that the players are going to cave when it's all
said and done.
They always do.
And this is, this is a for to be in Patrick is a player rep.
So, you know, and so he's someone that that has been involved with this type of stuff.
And so what my hope is going to be and it's going to, you know, and it's not, it's
not even, it's not even, is that they're going to stand up and that they're going to do
some pushback.
Or if they do it, they're going to actually get some real, you know, some real substance
from, you know, from the league as it, whether it's more guaranteed, you know, guaranteed
contracts or benefits down, you know, I mean, he helps us, sure, something.
I'm not, I'm not, I'm not holding out any hope, but that's, you know, because at the end
of the day, when it came to the last, the last CBA that was signed in 2020, only 51% of
the players actually voted for it.
I mean, voted, voted, voted, voted on, you know, on the CBA.
And I know this, you know, because, as Aaron would say, I was talking to the executive
director.
And so, you know, and he told me the stats.
And so I'm hoping that these players get more involved.
But when you have players that are just flippantly saying to them, play 18, I mean, I remember
I said in a particular, but I always talk about, you know, ready to play 18 games, I'm
like, bro, you get through 17 games before you talk about trying to give the league, you
know, an extra game for nothing.
And so I just really hope that the players save their money, invest their money, because
if they don't get it, the owners will lock them out.
And they won't get them back into the facilities until they cry, Uncle, and give the owners
what they want.
And the other thing is, the owners are going to get away in that 50, 50 revenue split,
too.
That's another reason why that, you know, if the players don't get what they want, owners
are going to lock them out and they're going to get everything that they want.
Not the only potential labor dispute we'll talk about on today's episode.
That is a tease to our fourth block.
Let me stay tuned with this.
We'll talk some NFL opener on the other side, listen to the Chief Squad Show on the Lock
Dawn podcast network.

Like in on the chief squad show here in the lockdown podcast network, Aaron Ladd, Ryan
Tracy Darren Smith and JC Pearson going through some headlines from the NFL owners meeting
this week in Arizona.
Here's from our guy Nate Taylor works for ESPN now.
Shout out Nate if you're listening news tip from Clark Hunt.
The chiefs are not expected to start the season in Seattle quote.
I don't think that's on the table anymore.
I think from a league standpoint, there would be some concern on whether Patrick Wilholms
would be ready to go.
If I think Clark Hunt knows what he's talking about when he says the chiefs won't play
in the opener.
This opener scheduled for Wednesday back to your point, Darren of the league trying to play
on every single day of the year, but it will not include reigning Super Bowl MVP, Kenneth
Walker going back to Seattle.
So Ryan, how about you kick us off on this one?
Does this move you that the chiefs are surprised you that the chiefs are not going to be on
opening night?
It makes me feel relieved.
I don't know about surprised.
I kind of almost expected it.
This is what I was talking about in the open.
I don't mind going to Madrid.
That's a beautiful city.
As long as they're doing the regular season, they don't start the season that way.
What I'm referring to is not having to travel internationally for a kickoff game for a
week one.
I still believe, and to our previous point, is that trip was not about player safety and
it costs Xavier worthy a season in my opinion and might have caused the chiefs are to bear
season in my opinion.
So I'm just glad that they're not in it.
It's the reward for having a crap season last season that maybe you don't have to be
in the spotlight and you don't have to do everything first and you don't have to be
the flag bearer for the whole week.
I think that's a good thing to see.
Oh, but I think that's all about Patrick Mahomes.
All about Patrick Mahomes.
If they knew for sure that he was healthy and going to be able to play in that game, especially
with Frank, I mean, Frank with Clark Walker.
I'm sorry.
Can it walk back to Kenneth Walker?
One of them guys, he'll, what, what a hell, you know, if they, you with him going back
to to Seattle, opening night, if they knew they had Patrick, man, it would be Glitz glam
or all that.
But, you know, if Patrick's not there, it kind of takes a lot away from it.
So, you know, that's the reason I believe that they're not in it.
Darren, you've been pounding the table this whole off season talking about week one week
one week one pass going to be ready by week one.
Here's the chief's owner on the record saying there's some concern at the league level
and the team level.
Does this change your thinking that QB1 will be back for week one?
No, not at all, because Andy, when Andy, he was that's the same question he, and that's
the thing.
And I said before, he thinks that Patrick will be back week one.
Now, the NFL is doing their due diligence as it relates to, again, their, their concern
is, it's not even, it's not even about Patrick.
It's about putting the best product out there at, at the highest level for the networks.
So, if you don't, if the league is not guaranteed that he is going to be playing in week one,
then why risk putting that on, on NBC on open night, when you can still put on NBC for
Sunday night football later on down the, you know, down the road.
I mean, they're going to play Seattle in time time.
It's just a matter of win.
And it has to be week number one, because you can still get that same rating later on in
the season.
So, I mean, now, and look, and, I mean, in, in Clarkson, the same thing, whether it's Sunday night
football or Monday night, it's just one day, you know, so, I mean, to give them maybe
three, three or four additional days is, you know, I mean, that's, that's fine.
I mean, it doesn't, it doesn't shake my confidence.
I mean, I talked to someone close to Patrick yesterday at the roles game and you told me,
he'll be ready week one.
I'm going to be honest, the league has obviously got their own formula and how they cook up
these matchups.
Chiefs versus Seahawks doesn't really, I mean, sure, it's sexy and the names are there,
but I can think of a better matchup in Seattle and San Francisco or Seattle and who they went
to battle with against the L.A. Rams, like the Seattle games, yeah, I mean, that's going
to be there.
Yeah.
I understand they're going to play that.
But if we're talking about opening night, if we're talking about storylines and trying
to build towards this opener, right, those going to be Chicago Bears, those games and those
teams, I feel like they played them closer like like you can't, I understand the chiefs
or a prime time darling and people are going to tune in.
We were talking about them in the lead up to Thanksgiving last year when they played Dallas
and how big of a number that was going to be.
The chiefs are going to draw no matter what to me.
I just think that that NFC, the NFC championship game last year was so good.
People were calling it better than the Super Bowl.
Why not just run that back?
It just that you can't because they're playing in Australia the very next day.
I see.
But if you know, you got Frank Walker coming back, I mean, Kenneth Walker, you know, we'll
get a name right by training.
Yeah, you'll get it.
You've got the Walker, Frank Clark, get in the Walker, you know, you got him, the Super Bowl
MVP coming back to town, played against his old team.
And then again, if you had Patrick and Travis and on and on and, you know, who they're going
to take with the number nine pick and all that, you know, it is sexy because, you know,
because of the names, but, yeah, you got to be sure it's going to happen and it's not,
you can't be sure that soon.
I was just double checking to confirm the opener.
Yes, it is Rams, Niners, 2026 plays that next day, Thursday and Melbourne.
Anybody here make the make the trip down to the chiefs opener this past year?
I heard nightmare stories, but I didn't know if anybody on the panel was actually there.
I didn't get a chance to go.
Steve was there, but he told me all about it.
It was a night.
Well, one reason I'm glad I didn't go.
It took them three and a half hours to get from the hotel to the stadium, which was
only 18 miles apart, so.
The chiefs have had some scheduling conundrums.
It seems, it seems like every year they're playing three games on the road and one of them
is on a midweek and I think to Ryan's point to kind of kick off this whole thing.
We're talking about 18 games, we're talking about them not playing on the opener.
Maybe the bright side of having a bad year and not having, you know, to play until
February, like you're accustomed to is, hey, not only did you get rest on the back end,
but maybe you'll get a favorable schedule and, look, I know these are things that championship
teams don't line themselves up and inside the wall say, hey, we want a favorable schedule
in this and that, you know, they say we'll play whenever, wherever, but we're a team
that wants to win in the margins and could use some advantages.
It would be nice to see the chiefs have a late season by avoid the opener if they're
playing an international game, have a buy after, you know, I mean, there are some things
that could go their way that could be helpful.
And if you stop and think about it, this game is not favorable, you know, about how
bad six and 11 soundlines here, they're playing the NFC West this year on top of the other
teams that you're playing.
So that's not a favorable schedule for them this season.
JC Ryan thoughts on this.
You got to play who you got to play.
There's not a lot of, not a lot of pushovers in this league anyway.
And then again, you don't know how good all these teams are going to be until you start
playing because, you know, free agency, injuries, whatever the case may be.
So what may look like an easy schedule may turn out to be super hard.
What may look like a hard schedule may turn out to be a lot easier.
So you, you know, you just got to line up and play them every week.
They're, they're all going to pose problems and they're all going to be tough for the
most part.
And I also get, I'm sorry, and I was going to say when we talk about an opener for
Kansas, you know, I'm looking at the comments, you know, going back to where Clark was talking
about in the owners meeting, you know, and I mentioned how he would like to play in Spain.
But he's also open to playing on Christmas and Thanksgiving, you know, they won't, you
know, we talked about the NFL showcase in the cheese.
Clark is one of the main culprits and wanted to make sure that the cheese get maximized
as much as possible on the prime time and on the, on those, on those holidays to where
you get, you know, single, single building and stuff like that.
I mean, that's funny.
I mean, that's just, I mean, he's the chair of the international committee, didn't he?
He's, he's the chair of the, of the finance committee.
So you go all about the money, which again, from here standpoint, I understand.
I just, you know, I mean, to somebody's point about the veterans, you know, they get, they
get their money.
But I don't think a lot of fans realize the teams get a check from, from the league prior
to prior to the season, even started prior to preseason, they get a check for almost
$400 million each and that comes from the contract from the network.
So they get all this money that goes into the owner's pockets.
They didn't go, didn't go towards the parking, the revenue, none of that stuff.
That's just money that they get every year prior to the start of season from the networks.
So they want more of that, you know, just, I just, again, I asked the question, how much
money is enough?
And for someone like them that have worked, you know, carcorder 126 billion, I guess he
wants another billion, I had to, I don't know.
Speaking of the Seattle Seahawks, they are going to be featured on one of the many hard
knocks series this year, which is interesting for a suitable champion to be featured or
hard knocks this year.
Well, be honest, I kind of wanted to see the chiefs or at least I want to see them in
some version like we get and we have gotten specifically over this past dynasty run.
We've gotten so many of these little documentary look into what was the last one called that
ESPN did, red kingdom or something like that.
Obviously, the quarterback series, Patrick Mahol is a part of, I believe on two separate
occasions.
I want a version that the chiefs don't have a fingerprints all over you know, I want
HBO to be in there and really show us the nitty gritty.
We've talked so much on this platform about what is it like inside the walls and some
of those decision making rooms when they're picking between the roster spots and this is
happening and this is happening.
It was all my wish list and it still could potentially happen because hard knocks has,
I think they have an in-season version now and different versions.
But on my wish list, you know, I've been nice this year, I wanted to, I wanted the chiefs
so hard knocks.
They are still, huh?
How they work out for her?
I wasn't around them.
I can't speak to it.
Yeah, where I got to look was the initial case by Barber's that shot out to them for
that.
Yeah, but they, yeah, and the chiefs are two.
What's the word I'm looking for?
You used hands on Aaron.
But you know, they're going to control what goes out there controlling, I think is the
word you're looking for.
Yeah.
They're not going to give you, give HBO or anybody else just full total access and, you
know, they're going to, you know, yeah, well, the teams have final say on what goes out
anyway.
So the teams get a chance.
They can, they can mix a lot of stuff beforehand.
I mean, that was, that was one of the reasons why a lot of people were questioned.
How the giants let that, you know, let that little office issue about, you know, them getting
rid of sake water, it's like, I didn't even let that hit.
So, I don't know, but we'll see.
A quick Google search says Andy Reed has never been featured on HBO series hard knocks.
So that likely won't be happening off my wish list this year.
That is the end of our second segment here when we come back.
We will discuss some player prototypes for Casey.

I was trying to have some fun with this and I wonder where y'all take this.
We got some player prototypes entering 2026 and really just generally four players in
the Kansas City Chiefs.
There's a couple of different names you can attach to these.
I have names next to all of those but I want to know where y'all take it from here.
There is a coach on the field prototype.
This is a player who's an extension of the coach on the sideline.
The coach can always rely on him to get the other players in place as well as being in
the right spot.
You can take offense or defense.
JC, who do you see as the coach on the field prototype for the Chiefs entering 2026?
Offensively or defensively?
It's up to you, big dog.
Well, I mean, obviously we know offensively.
It's my homes, right?
The quarterback.
He's the only guy on that side that knows what every player is supposed to be doing,
right?
You know, like the offensive lineman, they have no idea about the pass routes.
The receivers have no idea about the, you know, who's blocking who up front.
And you know, the running backs may be the second, second most knowledgeable, but it's
Patrick, obviously.
And then defensively, the mic backer, which is Nick Bolton, is the front seven.
And then the free safety is the back seven, you know, meaning the backers and the secondary
in coverage.
But if I had to pick one, it had to be Bolton, because he's the, he's got the green dot.
Ryan, what you think?
I absolutely agree.
And I, it leaves me a little bit concerned.
I think everybody was up in arms about Brian cooking a cheese, maybe having an interest
in bringing them back.
And that continuity is part of it.
I think we did see a difference in after Justin Reed left.
And I think that communication specifically between whoever's going to be playing
especially if they're, if they're trying to get into more single height to be able to
communicate with, with Nick down the middle, that's going to be utterly important this season
to see who takes on that role.
And I, I'm not convinced they know who that is yet.
I, I don't know.
I'm, I'm looking for somebody possibly in the draft that can come in and play more of
a center field and let what I see is a group of box oriented safety, play box safety.
You know what I mean?
And not have to play over the top, where maybe they're not quite as comfortable.
So I think that's crucially important and Nick's going to be the glue holds it all together.
Darren?
I mean, they both took the answers.
I mean, both, both Patrick and Nick, I mean, actually to one of the comments that someone
posted the thing, which I've been hoping for this for a while, I want to see where Patrick
grows enough where he can kind of start calling plays and modeling the plays on the field
as though he's Brady or, or, or paid men and whatever where he can kind of control the
game by being able to scoop the defense out of being able to call plays and make adjustments
and, and on a bulls at the line of scrimmage beforehand.
And so that's what I, I want to see the next growth and step in maturity and Patrick as
a quarterback.
And, and we saw that, of course, when they, when they traded away Tyrick Hill in that
22 season, we had the new receivers and people wondering how he was going to play quarterback
and spreading the ball out and stuff like that and he was able to show you can do that.
Now, I want to see him take that next step, which is, which is what Brady ended up having
to do later on in his career where he was, he was being like, man, where he could get
up to line of scrimmage, see the defense, make any type of reads and adjustments right
away and, and, and, and combat.
So that's what I want to see for Patrick being the, being the extension of the coach on
the field.
You know, when I think of this, I got a different name.
I thought of Creed Humphrey.
We talked so much about the changes along the offensive line last year and different
pieces in and different pieces out.
The center, just like the quarterback has to know where everybody's going to get people
in place.
I thought of him as a coach on the field, JC disagrees, I also thought of, yeah, I also
thought of Drew Trinkel as well as another guy who could be an extension of the coach of
the field, cerebral in a similar spot on the defense.
How about another prototype, a Swiss army knife, someone who plays a lot of different
roles that can serve in a lot of different capacities for Kansas City.
I think the first name that came to mind for me and Darren, I'm going to go right back
to you on this one is Bershart Smith, the guy who they think can be wide receiver, but
lines up at running back.
I think his versatility is something that Casey needs to take advantage of entering 2026.
Who's somebody you see as a Swiss army knife for Kansas City?
Well, I would probably say Taekwondo because I know they had them playing special teams
a lot last year when they, when they could have riffs down, but you say Swiss army knife,
but I don't know, they got too many players like that for real because outside of a while
we see we're turning kicks and, you know, they're trying to utilize the exhibit worthy of
the run game for some strange reason.
It's so serious.
I mean, he's a 155 pound, you got him trying to run reverses of stuff.
So he's fast, yeah, but fast, you know, he's fast until he gets hit.
But he don't use his speed like he should.
So, yeah, I would probably say Taekwondo's because he can, he's a little bit more stout
and he's someone that can, he's fast as well and can actually, you know, run, run the
football if given the opportunity because he can return plunge as well.
Ryan, couldn't Tonga be a Swiss army knife, doesn't he play a little fool back as well?
You know, maybe a little bit, but he's no calling sonner.
Let's be real.
I miss con sars, but there's a guy in the draft class that reminds me of the one I'll
tell you guys about him coming up.
So I think maybe the best Swiss army knife we haven't seen in a chief uniform yet.
Yeah.
And back to the safety position.
I think, although it might be a guy that can move all the way around, right?
We've seen him play two roles, one for the chargers, one for the Ravens, and unless they
get somebody that's a true center fielder, he may have to be the guy that's at the back
of a defense, but he can play up top.
And I think having Jayden Hicks there allows him to be more intermingleable in their alignment
and what they disguise.
And I'm excited to see a player.
Jay, see if I'm crazy.
No, I'm just trying to think that I mean, there's not a lot of guys that, you know, Swiss
army knife ish, you know, I mean, you know, maybe guy like Justin Fields, they're bringing
him in, you know, maybe he's a guy that's going to be able to run the ball some, maybe
do the quarterback sneak stuff, maybe some RPO stuff, maybe, you know, some of that kind
of stuff.
We haven't seen it yet, but, you know, I don't know, you know, up front, the offensive line,
you know, all those guys are, you know, they try to get those guys where they play multiple
positions, but it's just up front on the offensive line.
So, you know, but I don't know if they have a true Swiss army knife, you know, they say,
I'm going to be honest, man, if it's a chiefs, they're trying to do stuff like that, that's
a problem.
Like you have with, you know, I'm saying, I'm saying, if we try to use, you know, certain,
certain players as your, as they're saying to the Swiss army, I feel like, I guess, if
you got, well, no, let me stop saying, if you got Xavier, whether or why a receiver,
let him, you know, let him go down the field and catch the ball.
Don't put him in the backfield or try, or try to run reverses like, it's what you have
to run him back for.
Like you have skill players, skill players make a lot of money, let them do their job.
Don't, you know, because sometimes when you try to get too cute, you get your players
hurt.
And so that's the reason why, you know, I'm not, I'm not a big fan of that to be quite
honest, because I mean, we, we, we, we, we, we would see that a lot and, you know, Xavier
worthy, we're trying to run, we're trying to run reversing the defense, we're already
catching one of your, like, he's sitting back and he's like, why, you know, just, just
why?
Next player prototype is the player that's always under the microscope, the player that the
coach is always right next to him.
His lease is a little short, you know, he's not always, he's not always where he needs
to be.
The potential is there.
But the production maybe hasn't exactly matched up to it, just, yeah, I'm not naming
names, but this player is under the microscope.
No, you might have to name a name on that one, that kind of, when they're having, they're
having guys that have played the, okay, Ryan, go ahead.
What you got?
I said, I ain't naming him.
You go ahead.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, I think Xavier worthy is under the microscope and where she rises under the microscope
as well.
If you want to just throw the, you say, I think I'm going to get benched or they're going
to get, you know, here, come say about me for a little bit.
I don't see that happening, but not benched, but it seems like when it's, you know,
it seems like when Xavier worthy or why you more, there you go, why you more, if you
that they left tackle, that's someone who, who will get yanked.
For instance, Kingley Suomati was under the microscope for a very long time, too, he got
yanked.
And I know they had him playing in different positions, but it seemed like when he did
make mistakes, they were magnified versus when other players made mistakes, the leash
was a little bit longer.
There are, there are a few players that I think fit into this build on Kansas City, Kingley
is one of them.
Whoever's at the left now, not now, not now, yeah, yeah, yeah, two years ago, we asked
that question.
Yes, we can told you why you were keen.
Whoever's at the left tackle position had a short lease.
Nobody else wants to say any names, you want to the next one.
All right, the final, the final player for this, yeah, I mean, not too many players have
that quote, of course, release to where they don't make those type of, I mean, you would
have thought someone would have had a short lease would have been a John Taylor, because
of all the penalties and all side of stuff like that.
But the money that you wouldn't go bench or pull them or, hey, come stand over it to the
side until you, you know, until you start not getting false started and that happened.
That happened.
And it happened.
He got pulled to the side of a couple of times and went right back in, right?
He went back in.
Yes.
Okay.
I, you know, Black Friday, when the Chiefs played the Raiders and my homes kept getting
sacked.
He made sure that they, that they ain't wanting more so he didn't see the field again.
So there's a big difference.
Let's end on a positive note.
The final player prototype is the Iron Man, the, the ever reliable player, the player that's
always there when you need them, trusty, reliable shows up day in and day out.
Does their work continues to move the line forward, a chain mover, the Iron Man are the
reliable player prototype.
There's a couple of different ways you can go with this.
JC, anybody come to mind?
Creed Humphrey, Trace Smith.
Right.
Oh, that's what we've already made.
Yeah.
Creed Humphrey, Trace Smith, you know, I put Nick Bolton on that list though.
Nick Bolton.
Yep.
Absolutely.
Right.
The reliable tough there when you need him.
You know, those are those are the guys right there.
For me, the chiefs need this to be Kenneth Walker.
I mean, for them to get what we're hoping for out of the run game or I'll speak for myself.
What I'm hoping for out of the run game, he's got to be the guy that's reliable on first
second and third down consistently shows up is able to take some of that pressure off
Patrick Maholms and bring back some of the run game and the explosiveness and the efficiency
that we've been missing over these last few years.
I also think Travis Kelsey is somebody that comes to mind.
I think that's a pretty obvious name as far as Iron Man reliable.
We're talking about a guy 14 years into his career who's leading the team and receiving
yards.
Do I think that Travis Kelsey should be the Iron Man to get them to where they need to go?
Not necessarily.
But Travis Kelsey has been an Iron Man for this franchise.
100% put him and Kenneth Walker down as that.
And the only problem with the Kenneth Walker thing is that that's going to be dependent
on somebody doing this and calling the plays for him to be that particular person that
you're looking for.
So that's a lot of pressure from you to have on him.
He's going to be dependent on your guy on the sideline to call the plays for him to actually
do that.
And the quarterback.
Yeah.
Because if this RPO thing stays in there, we all know they're not running the ball.
So it takes a dedication to make Kenneth Walker what you hope he will be.
All right, I appreciate you all playing along with me there.
We'll take our last break here.

Final segment here on the Cheese Squad Show here in the Lockdown Podcast Network, Erin
Lad, Ryan Tracy, JC Pearson, and Darren Smith wrapping up our final show for the month of
March in 2026.
A lot of active comments in the chat.
We appreciate y'all making us part of your day, week, month.
We'll get to those at the end of the show if we have time.
Let's talk some replacement refs on the way out of here.
The NFL owners alarmed, quote unquote, by the state of negotiations and are beginning
to line the path for replacement officials that coming from ESPN sources telling them.
We've seen this in the past.
We have seen this in the past.
Yeah, we have seen this in the past.
You know, I mean, we didn't see it.
It wasn't too long ago where they were using the thing kind of officials and, and according
to what the league is talking about, I think they're looking at getting the vision one,
the vision tree and the vision three coaches to be replacement reps.
So, I mean, it's, it's not going to look hopefully they'll come to an agreement before
the season starts because there was a lot of, there were a lot of mistakes that took place
years ago when they had this, when they had this issue.
I don't know, I can sure you weren't frozen anymore.
Where's your loot me?
I don't know.
But you can start over.
We were just trying to at least try to, try to fill in before you went all, you know,
you can fill in very well, y'all, I have faith that y'all could absolutely fill in from
me.
Yeah.
If they can use replacement refs, fill in replacement host, fill in host, right?
All right.
Jesse, go ahead.
No, Jesse, go ahead.
You have to go ahead right now.
It's awesome.
Yeah.
Ryan, what do you think about this?
You think it's a good idea?
You think they'll get it worked out?
I don't think they'll get it worked out.
I think it's a terrible damn idea.
You know, and the other thing that they, that, that the owner of the number that they vote
on this weekend was to, which is, which is going to be scary because there were, there
was a plug-ins in a Super Bowl where Safan Dicks got, got hit in the head or whatever
that they didn't call a penalty on.
So, there's going to be more things that take place.
In New York or, you know, replay assistance or whatever that's going to be, that's going
to be more involved this year as well, which of course is going to probably hamper the
officiating.
And I also read where, if replay assist doesn't, doesn't notify or do something within
the first 20 seconds, then the officials have to continue on with the, you know, what
the game of play is to not hold it up.
So, but, you know, one thing that is crazy about all of this, and we talked about
it way, way back when, when I was playing, and I'm sure they talked about it before then.
But, you know, all the money that, that we've been talking about this show and, you know,
that the league is making and trying to make and continuing to make and going to 18.
But you don't have full-time refs, you know, how can that be?
That should be mandatory on both sides.
You know, how can you have part-time referees when you're talking about a billion dollar
industry and, and calls and games that affect franchises, that affect players, that affect
all of this stuff that is so much money.
But you got a part-time guy out there.
It's, it's crazy.
It makes no sense.
I agree.
And something that I've been talking about for quite a while.
It doesn't mean they have to be, you know, 40 hours a week on the field at practice with
somebody all the time.
There's film study for referees as well.
Like, there are ways to make this functional, to make it a career path where people want
to continue through it.
It's not a part-time gig.
And it, it hockey these breaches in the wall all week and coming on to a field on Sunday.
I know he's, he's retired down, I'm good for it, but that's fine.
Yeah.
I think there's more problems.
Right.
Yeah.
And this billion dollar industry, you know, and these games mean so much, every game,
you know, as repercussions, every play has repercussions and, you know, this guy's thinking
about, you know, sales call he's got to make tomorrow, you know, I mean, hypothetically,
but I'm just saying, you know, here are the three major sticking points as far as negotiations
are concerned.
The NFL wants to increase accountability for poorly performing officials.
They want to place lower performers on probationary periods.
The second disagreement is on playoff assignments.
The union wants playoff assignments to hinge on the official's seniority and give preferential
treatment to veterans.
The third is always over compensation.
The NFL has offered an average raise around six and a half percent over a six year deal.
This didn't go well in 2012 by anyone's major, by anyone's measure.
The last time this happened, I think if I'm the league, I'm biting the bullet on whatever
the dollars and cents are, I understand kind of the, the, the playoff aspect of it.
And that kind of goes hand in hand with the poorly officiated aspect of it as well.
I mean, your spotlight games, February, February, January, December, when everybody's eyes
on you, you don't want those massive mistakes to be impacting some of these games.
There's got to be something to get here.
This agreement between these two sides expires on the 31st of May.
So we're, you know, two months away from this now.
Is anyone optimistic that this actually happens before then?
Or do we think we're all headed for a redo of 2012?
Redo.
I mean, the owner's going to squeeze them as much as they can.
That's what they do, right?
I mean, what should they do?
Yeah, they should get these guys signed and get them in there and get them going.
But, you know, will they go with replacement reps?
Hell, if they'll go with replacement players, you better believe they'll go with some replacement
reps to get their point across and to win, quote, unquote, the negotiation.
So, yeah, the reps are going to have to give in.
Like you guys were saying earlier, you know, the owners are never going to come out
on the short end of the stick.
What you gain goes back to the question, how much money is too money?
Like, you're making all this money and you're really going to try to be cheap
about the officiating, which, well, which can again, which, I don't
mean, I know they look at the bigger picture, but it's has such an adverse effect on the
game because people are going to think that what the gamut involved that, if you,
you know, if you have these replacement officials that they're making the wrong place,
that's billions of dollars that could be, you know, saying that that can go one way or
the other.
And especially since the replacement, they might have money on the line.
Takes one to no one, huh?
I'll tell you, I'll tell you this too.
I disagree with the whole seniority has to be assignments.
I think, I think again, if you make them full time, part of that becomes just like
the players do review your game film from yesterday.
Did you make the right calls?
And then you have a way to turn in some actual metrics and actually give the best
performing the, the most to the book referees, those playoff spots.
So we don't have playoff games that are hinging on calls.
Yeah.
And I think you get more consistency too.
And you're not, you're not questioning, oh, is this, is the tackles helmet, you
know, too far back is he up close?
You know, if they are reviewing those things weekly and, you know, daily and
everything else, you know, maybe they're, they're more on the same page and you
get calls that are more uniform.
So guys, you know, know exactly what they can do, what they can't do instead of
guessing because, you know, I remember we used to, we used to have a scouting
report on what officials we have this week.
And hey, this guy calls more person holding calls.
This guy called more, more passing or interference calls.
This guy let you play more this, you know, when it, it shouldn't be like that.
It should be uniform and standard and consistent to the call is what the
call is regardless of who's making it.
Yeah, she'd scout the other team, not the rest.
Right.
Yeah, but we did.
And the other thing is one reason why do you want full-time officials because you
want them to be able to go, especially during training, and I know, I know they do
this when they have, you know, when they have the strategies that you want the
players to get a feel of the officiating during the campuses, so they get a
chance, like the officials can tell them what's considered a foul, what
they're not, you know, saying they plan to aggressively or not, so they can kind
of get that stuff worked out in practice and training camp before the season
starts. So you won't have as many, and so you won't have as many fouls throughout
the game that slows the game down and stuff.
So I mean, I think at the end of the day, it's not, it's not going to turn out
well for the league.
And, you know, but we'll see how many people we talk about it's six man crews,
right? For 16, 17 crew.
And then, you know, they got a couple, a couple of subs on the side line that
got there. You get someone in the sky, yeah, it's a pretty big number when
you try adding it up. But yeah, we're not talking 150. It's not more than that,
is it? No, no, no, no. So, but you can still afford it. Yeah, that's what I'm
saying. It's not like we're talking, you know, 400 people. Right.
On that same topic, the competition committee issuing a rule change,
trying to get ahead of this for one year, only the NFL officiating department
will correct clear and obvious misses made by on field officials that impact
the game. This is in the event that there is a work stoppage.
I'll take the in the event that there is a work stoppage part off of that
and say, why not we just throw this in full time? I know it got wacky for a minute
there where we could challenge passing or appearance and there's kind of a
speed of play thing. We're trying to keep up, keep up with and stay ahead of.
I don't understand. We can't just, hey, you know,
the sky judge is going to be there no matter what 100% of the time.
There were a couple of other changes made as far as special teams are
concerned. But that one is the one that caught my attention, especially when
we're talking about replacement refs.
Yeah.
Can't argue that.
Man, hey, you know, I don't know.
You know, I know there was some questions about, you know, if they could go back
and review a play and call a penalty that wasn't called and, I mean,
hell, you can do that on any given play. Yeah, right.
So I, you know, I think that's opening up a huge can of worms and more
controversy than than not. So I'm not a fan of that.
If you put some guard rails on it, specifically, I think that they have
a spotter for concussions. I think that's important.
Maybe they care about that like the 18 games.
They'll just, I know we'll just watch you make it. We'll watch you and see
see if you knock yourself out and then we'll take you out. No, no, I'm
kid. No, no, no, I'm just, I'm just joking. I'm just through that out there.
Go ahead. Sorry.
I think I think it's a good idea.
Practice doesn't live up to that. But yeah, I see.
Good show today, fellas. Remember the chief squad show is live on YouTube
every Tuesday and Thursday at seven o'clock arrowhead time.
We are in your podcast feeds immediately after. If you want to go ahead,
I mean, look, look, if you made it to this far in the episode, you like the show,
you'll like the content. We're thankful for you. Show that thanks back and go
ahead and hit that subscribe button so we can be happy here on this side of the
platform. Any final thoughts before we get out of here, final show for the
month of March, 2026?
Man, let's get to this draft, man. So we, I mean, we really got some, you
know, some stuff to talk about, you know, right before and and and during and
after. But hey, man, let's let's get to it, man.
And I do have a question. We talked about how the chiefs are going to be,
I guess, going in the second hour with the first graphic. We talked about being
on the internet, but I forgot they do it. I'm a big anti-intro for fron, too.
So are we doing a long show? What could I need to know? Cause I don't know,
they're going to have the players on a Zoom and stuff in between that time.
So I'm just trying to figure out my, Darren, we're not going to get in between
you and your money. We're going to let you get your money and take care of what
you need to take care of. We'll figure out the logistics at seven o'clock is
going to be tough, considering the draft. I believe starts at seven 30.
I don't know. Six thirty six. I don't know. That's not really.
You'll be able to get the free food from Clark County.
They don't worry. I mean, we get that anyway.
You won't be there. Just because you won't be there. Don't hang on there.
Who said I wouldn't go be there? You're not going to be there.
I wouldn't go live. I won't be there.
Can you guys ask for this? Don't work any longer.
I'm just saying. All right.
Till next time, y'all be safe. Make good decisions.
No.
