Chiefs Trade for Edge Rusher, Cornerback in Mock Draft

About this episode

The Kansas City Chiefs, after a tumultuous free agency, traded cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams for draft picks. ESPNs Mel Kiper Jr. predicts theyll use their ninth overall pick in the 2026 draft to select edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. from Miami. This move, along with a potential twenty-ninth pick of cornerback Brandon Cisse from South Carolina, aims to strengthen both the defensive line and secondary, mirroring their strategy when they traded Tyreek Hill and drafted pass rushers and cornerbacks in the past.

It's March 18, here's your NFL news in two minutes, subscribe to stay locked in all season. The Kansas City Chiefs had a roller coaster free agency period, they lost some key starters but signed a couple of solid impact players. In a big move, they traded cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams and picked up four draft picks including three this year, that extra capital could speed up their retooling efforts. ESPN draft expert Mel Kuiper Jr. put out a mock draft for the 2026 NFL draft based on these changes. He has the Chiefs grabbing edge rusher Ruben Bain Jr. from Miami with their ninth overall pick. The Chiefs secondary took hits after the McDuffie trade and losing Jalen Watson in free agency. But Kuiper points out their past rush struggle last season too. Bain brings speed, power, and smarts off the edge with 71 pressures, 9.5 sacks, and 18.5 tackles for loss despite shorter arms. At pick 29, Kuiper sends cornerback Brandon Sissy from South Carolina to Kansas City.

This duo would fix both the front and back of the defense right away. It's a smart trenches first approach, much like when they traded Tyree Kill back in 2022 and drafted a past rusher and cornerback. The front office seems laser focused on rebuilding that defense that wore down last year. This story is shared with support from our sponsor.
