China’s property giant Country Garden missed two United States dollar bond coupons due in early August, totalling US$22.5 million (S$30.5 million). Another major real estate developer, China Evergrande, filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States to protect it from creditors as it restructures its debt. The company defaulted on US$300 billion (S$407 billion) of debt in 2021.
