Clare Libraries Helping People Identify Presence Of Second Leading Cause Of Lung Cancer In Their Home

The risk of red on gas in our homes is very prevalent in Ireland.

I think it's the second leading cause of lung cancers.

And so this scheme is an initiative of healthier

and that your library done supported by the environmental protection agency.

So the idea, I suppose, is to raise awareness of red on in homes.

And this is it's a very valuable first step, I suppose, in identifying potential red on issues.

And of course, everybody has a local library.

So is this the perfect way to roll it out in your view to have these gas monitors in libraries

where people can then borrow them and use them and return them when they're done?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it absolutely is because it gives, you know, all our

users are members of the public access, you know, easy, easy access to, and to a

monitor. So we have eight monitors spread across the county, but of course,

no matter where you are, you can go into your local library and request

to be put on the wait list. And is it the usual duration that they're allowed to have them for?

Yes, so at the moment, we're asking people, we have them on a loan for 10 days.

So that should be enough as an initial way of identifying potential issues in their houses.

And you mentioned that you have people on waiting lists at the moment.

Can people walk into their library and inquire about these with the hope of taking one

home with them that day or do they need to pre-book online or how do they go about that?

No, they can walk into the local library and request them, or they can email

chair libraries support, email address to see where there might be one available.

And an initiative like this, obviously, it's outside of the perhaps the traditional

role of the library, but our employees of Clare libraries are always happy to facilitate

these types of initiatives and to get involved with something that is very much in the public

interest. Yeah, of course. So I mean, schemes like Healthy R and Dr. Library will always support

issues that improve people's lifestyles. And so we're very happy to support this one. It is kind

of an initial, it will initially identify an issue in your home. And if people do then want,

you know, to learn a bit more, they can, you know, purchase a manager from a company recommended

by the EPA. And so it's these monitors, another replacement for their three-month tests, but

there are good initial guidelines.
