On this edition of Locked On Cavs, Danny Cunningham reacts to the latest injury update on Cleveland Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen, with the team announcing that he will miss at least the next week while dealing with knee tendonitis. Danny breaks down where the team has missed Allen the most during his absence and how they can improve defensively even when he’s not on the floor. Next, Danny breaks down the play of Max Strus and discusses how he can help the Cavs unlock new dynamics on both ends of the floor. Finally, Danny discusses the potential return for both Sam Merrill and Jaylon Tyson from injuries.

On today's show, we got an injury update on Jared Allen and it wasn't the best one
he's going to miss at least the next week and the calves have missed him while he's
going out.
What they need to find a way to get through this stretch because it's very important
time of the year and the calves need to be much better defensively.
We'll talk about it on this edition of Lockdown Caves.

On today's show, we will be talking about the latest injury update that we got as it
pertains to Jared Allen because of his knee tendonitis that has cost him the past five
games and will cost him at least three more ones, what the calves need to do over the
course of his extended absence, what macstras can bring to the table and take a brief look
ahead at two day nights game against Milwaukee Bucks.
But the calves on Monday night put out an injury update on Jared Allen stating that
Allen will be listed as out for the Cavaliers upcoming three game road trip with the right
knee tendonitis.
He sustain the injury during the second half of Cleveland's March 3rd game versus Detroit
and his missed the last five games.
He will continue treatment and rehabilitation and his return to play will be updated as
appropriate.
This update that the calves gave on Monday means that Jared Allen is going to miss at
least one more week as I just said, he has missed the past five games which at this point
has now been two weeks.
So he's going to be missing at least three weeks of action down the stretch of this season
which is a concern and it's a concern for a number of different reasons and the calves
have I think greatly missed him while he's been out dealing with this knee injury.
But one of the sneaky things here and I've talked about this as it pertains to macstras
and we are going to spend some time coming up in segment number two thinking about how
macstras can help this basketball team because he looked awesome and we probably didn't talk
about him enough because of how bad that loss was on Sunday.
But I do think that the calves have missed Jared Allen a lot and I talked about this with
macstras.
They're running out of time to get things figured out and with Alan missing now at
least the next three games he's not going to play on Tuesday against Milwaukee will be
out on Thursday against Chicago and will also not play on Saturday in New Orleans.
Next chance where Jared Allen could potentially be back in the lineup is a week from Tuesday
when the Orlando Magic are in town that will be three weeks from Jared Allen's injury
against the Detroit pistons back on March 3rd.
But at that point they will only have 11 games left in the season.
So if Jared Allen is back on that date which I don't know if he's going to be back on
that date.
I don't know that that's been decided yet.
I think if they rule him out for the three games on this trip.
I think that that next Tuesday is not a sure thing that he plays in that game.
But the point being here is the calves are running out of time to have their team together.
And I talked about this with Max and getting Max back on Sunday was a very good thing
for the calves and something that they certainly needed to do.
And I think he provided a boost and I expect him to continue to provide a boost as he works
his way back in and we'll talk about him again coming up in just a second.
But the calves don't have a lot of time to figure this thing out.
I think that is going to be something that I look at as a big challenge as they enter
the postseason because typically teams that find success in the playoffs are teams that
have been together.
Teams that have been in battles together that know how to play basketball alongside each
other.
And there is a big group of this team that had a lot of reps under its belt, right?
Like, no, just Jared Allen need additional reps with Donovan Mitchell probably not.
I think he and Evan Moby know how to play basketball together pretty well.
I think you could say the same for Max True, Sam Merrill, Dean Wade.
Like all of those guys that have been in Cleveland for an extended period of time for multiple
seasons, I don't think that that group necessarily needs the reps.
But you look at this and say, okay, well, the calves are trying to do this while James
Hardin is still a new player in Cleveland with Dennis Schroeder, who's a new player in
Cleveland.
Keanu Ellis, who is a new player in Cleveland.
And I know that Schroeder and Ellis aren't necessarily the most high usage guys.
But the point being here is that we are looking at a reality where the calves enter the postseason
and they're going to find ways to win down the stretch.
And I expect them to be much better on Tuesday than they were on Sunday.
We'll have to wait and see.
But they're going to find ways to win down the stretch.
But the reality of this situation is we might get through the end of the regular season.
We might get to the start of the postseason.
And the calves don't have their team fully together for a single game this season.
That to me became a realistic possibility on Monday when this was announced.
Because at a certain point, like the calves have a couple of back to back remaining, right?
Like is Max Schroeder's going to play both ends of the back to back next week, a week
from on Tuesday when they play Orlando and then they play Miami the next day?
I don't know if that's going to be the case.
Jared Allen, let's say best case scenario at this point is that he comes back a week
from Tuesday against Orlando.
Is he going to play both sides of that back to back?
I'm not so sure that that's going to be a thing that happens.
Like I just look at this and say, I don't know how frequently, if at all, everybody's
going to be healthy for the calves during this regular season.
And that is something that we talked about all the things that we're concerning and that
was a very on yesterday's episode and that was like all that rings true still.
But everything matters more that the calves are healthy.
Like if they can figure out ways to be healthy and get these reps together, those concerns
can be alleviated a little bit.
But I think now the biggest concern with this latest update has to be that we might
not actually see the calves at full strength for any of the 82 games they play in this
regular season.
This doesn't rule it out.
It's still possible.
But you've got best case scenario, 11 games remaining in the season when Jared Allen returns.
And that's best case scenario.
This update doesn't say, yeah, he'll be back in a week.
It says it'll be updated as appropriate.
That doesn't say he'll play next Tuesday against Orlando.
Just says that he's going to miss the next three games.
And the calves have missed Jared a lot.
Like he is not the only reason that they have struggled.
And I was planning on talking about this prior to this update coming out on this show.
But the calves over their last five games, which Jared Allen, of course, has not played
in any of them.
They're 22nd in defense.
And that's not entirely because Jared Allen is not on the floor.
Like there, it's not as if with Jared Allen, they've been a perfect defense, but they
have been at their best when they have both Jared Allen and Evan Moby on the floor.
According to cleaning of the glass this year, the calves have a defensive rating of 111.3
when both Jared Allen and Evan Moby are on the floor together.
That's very good.
Like that is a place where the calves can be, they can thrive.
That is a good enough defensive rating for them.
When Evan Moby's on the floor and Jared Allen is off the floor, the calves have a defensive
rating of 113, which is not awesome.
It's not great.
But it's fine.
Like that is a passable defensive rating.
It could be better.
I think a lot of that has to do with Evan, just not being in the same position that he's
in when Jared is out there.
And we'll talk about that in a second.
But then when you go to, okay, well, what about when they have no Evan Moby on the floor
and they have Jared Allen on the floor because things then aren't terrible.
They're not good, but they're not terrible either.
And that is another thing that like I just think is worth looking at.
So in those situations, the calves have a defensive rating of 117.7, which is not good
enough.
Like it is not horrible.
They're good enough offensively that they're still a positive team in those situations according
to cleaning the glass.
But then one of the real issues is that they just, they can't survive for long periods
of time when that's the case.
And I think it's a little bit easier when you go through these stretches of games where
yeah, you don't have Evan Moby out there, but you have Jared Allen out there.
You don't have Jared Allen out there, but you've got Evan Moby out there.
And if nothing else, you've got for the most part 48 minutes of elite level rim protection
on the basketball floor.
And the calves have been missing that without Jared Allen.
And I think that the guy who might be the most impacted by Jared Allen's absence might
actually be Evan Moby on the defensive end of the floor because Evan has still been
a good defender.
And despite the fact that they're 22nd over the stretch, like I don't put a lot of this
on Evan.
I think a good chunk of this is on the perimeter guys and that I do think is a little
bit.
It's not solely because of Jared Allen again, this is the calves being 22nd defense, Jared
Allen matters as far as that goes, but like he's not the only reason as to why this is
not.
Oh, Jared Allen is back to defensive fix.
That's not what this is.
But I do think with Evan, when he plays entire games without Jared Allen or with most of
his minutes at center, or even alongside Thomas Bryant, who I think is filled in admirably,
but he's nowhere near the same level of rim protection that Jared Allen is, it takes Evan
away from what he's best at because Evan's a really good rim defender.
But Evan is, I think, better at being the guy that can roam off the basketball.
Like think back to the game, the calves played against Detroit, the last game that Jared
downplayed.
The guy that Evan mobility primarily defended was a Sar Thompson and a Sar Thompson, who
is in a very, very excellent defender for Detroit, is I don't want to say a non factor
offensively because that's unfair and it's not entirely true, but he's not a threat
from the perimeter.
He's a guy that Evan mobility can defend because Evan mobility doesn't need to stay attached
to him.
And that allows Evan to create problems for opposing offenses in other areas.
That can only really be done when he's on the floor with another rim protector.
So without Jared Allen, it's not only that they're missing who Jared Allen is, it's forcing
Evan mobility to be in a role that I don't want to say he's not awesome at because he's
still really good.
And like you had four blocks against Dallas, the other night, like he's still a really
good rim protector, but you are then taking him away from the role that he's best in and
the drop off, I think, between having the real drop off is moving Evan away from that
chaos creation role into the rim protector role because we could talk about like what the
difference between Evan as the rim protector and Jared Allen as the rim protector is and
Evan's probably a little bit better, but the bigger drop off is from Evan playing the
four and being able to really muck up opposing offenses to whoever else is in that role.
Because Keon Ellis is the other guy that I think can create a lot of havoc for opposing
teams, but he's six foot four, like he can't do it at nearly the same level for his
as remarkable as his hands have been and how impressive I have been for the most part
with him defensively and he was not good against Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.
He's not the same defender, the same type of defender that Evan mobility is.
And I think that is really one of the hidden areas where the cabs have really, really
missed Jared Allen because without him, Evan is pushed into another role and like he's
still good in that role, but it's not the role where the cabs are best with Evan
mobility playing and I just think that is something that matters maybe a little bit more
than we've talked about.
Now, the point here part of it is the cabs defensively, like I said, their issues on
that and the floor are not entirely because of Jared Allen not being there.
They need to be better on the perimeter, like the game against Orlando and the game against
Dallas on Sunday.
So Wednesday and Sunday of this past week, the cabs perimeter defense was atrocious.
It was really, really porous.
They were allowing guys to get into the paint and I don't care who the rim protector is.
If guys are able to get into the paint with as little pushback or as little defensive force
as the cabs showed in those two games, it really doesn't matter how good Evan mobility
is or how good Jared Allen would be in that spot.
They're going to have an easier time.
Like the opponent numbers at the rim have been really, really good against the cabs lately,
but I don't look at it and say, well, Evan mobility's not been good.
I would say the same thing about Jared Allen.
Like if he were out there, this wouldn't be on him.
A lot of this is on how bad the cabs have been on the perimeter defending the basketball.
That's where the defense really does need to improve.
Now I will say to be fair here, when the cabs are set up with both Allen and mobility on
the floor, it's a little bit easier, I think, for guys on the perimeter to be a little
bit more aggressive because they know, okay, there are two elite level guys on the back
line and when only one of those guys is on the back line, you do have to change a little
bit on the perimeter and the cabs very clearly have not handled that change well whatsoever.
That has been a disaster because there's no world in which they should have given up
130 points to the 27th ranked offense in the NBA, which is exactly what they did on Sunday.
Now against Orlando, like I think that was a little bit more explainable, given the
cabs were in their third game in four nights, but like that becomes, they get less of the
benefit of the doubt when they turn around and have this type of defensive performance
that they had against Dallas and they miss Jared Allen a lot.
They miss him more defensively than they do offensively because as I have said, since
the cab strayed for James Harden, even it doesn't, I don't want to say it doesn't matter
who the supporting cast is, but when you have down to the Mitchell, when you have James
Harden, you're going to be an elite level offense.
Like I did not think that the cabs looked great offensively against Dallas on Sunday and
they scored 120 points and their shot quality was better than the Mavericks were and they
made shots at a clip that's respectable.
Like 120 points should win games every single time, but you can't allow 130 points and
they miss Jared Allen a lot on the defensive end of the floor and over these next three
games, they don't play good opponents, but they need to find a way to be much better defensively
than what they were over this past week.
Now Max Drews, as we talked about on yesterday's show, made his return and he was awesome.
I think there are a few things that he can help fix and it's not just the perimeter defense.
We'll talk about what those are next right here.
I locked on cabs.
But first, today's show is brought to you by Five Hour Energy.
Welcome to the Five Hour Energy Flavor Draft with 18 different flavors to choose from, including
new options like confetti craze, fruby rainbow, or cotton candy.
There's something for everyone.
The board is set, the flavors are ready and I've got my number one pick for the Five Hour
Energy Draft.
You've been listening to the show.
You know what the pick is.
For me, it's a sour apple flavor.
The apple that bites back, it's a crisp, tangy taste, deliciously tart bowl,
the little bit of sweet and a lot of sour, I really, really enjoy sour.
Like that to me, since I was a kid, has been something that's always been a big part of my palate.
I like sweet things too, but I like sour things.
That's why sour apple has always been something that has resonated with me.
Not even speaking about Five Hour Energy, just like green apples growing up.
And to now get that taste in a Five Hour Energy, that's why it's my number one overall pick.
You might want to go peach mango, maybe Hawaiian breeze, strawberry or banana.
I'm not a banana guy, but if you are strawberry, strawberry banana is a great choice for you.
But there are loads of great choices with Five Hour Energy and their shots give you a boost
with zero sugar and they do have a lot of upcoming flavor innovations planned as well.
So find your new favorite flavor of Five Hour Energy shots available online at fivehourenergy.com
that is the number five h-o-u-r-energy.com or on Amazon today.

And Max Shrews was back for the first time this season on Sunday against the Dallas Mavericks and he had a fantastic game.
As we talked about, he was actually the best player of the Caves head.
24 points, seven of nine shooting, six of seven from beyond the arc, just totally surpassed any realistic expectations for what he could have done in his return for not playing basketball since May 11.
Like that was just unbelievable what he was able to do.
Nine guys with the Caves played in that game against Dallas.
Eight of them were outscored when they were on the floor. Max Shrews wasn't.
He had a positive net writing, according to cleaning the glass, like that is you couldn't have asked for anything more.
And I think that he can help to change this team and be a big spark for this group because Max is one of the more competitive people that
I've ever met. And I do think that that is a competitiveness and a grittiness that the Caves need because I do think that
Kenny Ackinson frequently throughout his two years in Cleveland has described Max as this connector, right?
Like when you ask about Max, that is the word that I think most frequently comes out of Kenny's mouth.
And I think it fits really well. And I think we saw why on Sunday. And I think that is something that the Caves have been missing.
And I do think, too, it's part of the reason why if and this is a big if.
Because we don't know what Max who is not on the injury report for Tuesday.
We don't know what he's going to look like on Tuesday.
We don't know what he'll look like on Thursday in Chicago.
We don't know what he'll look like on Saturday next Tuesday, Wednesday, like someone and so forth.
We don't know what this process is going to look like.
They could all look like he did on Sunday.
And he'd be one of the best role players in basketball if that's who he is consistently.
I think that's unfair to expect.
But he's somebody that can bridge the gap between the back court and the front court.
That's what that connector role really does.
And I think that is something the Caves have missed. And that's part of the reason why they've had a rotate.
I mean, the biggest reason why they've had a rotating cast of characters in the starting lineup is because they haven't been healthy.
And that is the first and foremost thing about this.
But I think that he is a ideal fit alongside Alan and Moby and Harden and Mitchell.
Whether or not we actually see that is yet to be seen.
But I do think that his ability to to play up a position should be able to unlock some things for the cast.
Like he is comfortable playing the three and the four.
And I think that because he is so different than Dean Wade.
While I don't think Max is as strong defensively as Venus.
He's so much better and so much more versatile offensively.
That makes him a better fit.
Like I don't think that the Caves have the same defensive upside.
But I think they're overall a better basketball team.
And the fact that Max rebounds as well as he does for a guy his size is something that the Caves missed too.
Like he played just under 23 minutes on Sunday and he had eight rebounds. He had three offensive rebounds.
He does all of the little things at a really, really high level.
Like when I think of guys on the calves.
That handle the little things and the little things are different, right?
Like no one does all of the little things perfectly.
But like I think there are little things that Sam Merrill does that really impact winning.
I think he analysis does a lot of little things and he was not good whatsoever on Sunday against Dallas.
But I think he does little things that can impact winning when Dennis Schroeder is at his best.
I think he does little things that help to impact winning.
And I think Max is kind of like the best version of all of that.
And if he's hitting shots, he's awesome to have on the floor.
And even if he's not, I do think he's an added player.
So I think that Sunday was a great example as to why when we've talked about Max.
As it pertains to the postseason rotation.
It's always been if Max is healthy.
He's in the playoff rotation.
And Sunday was a great example of that.
Like that guy is a playoff player.
There are 82 game players and there are 16 game players.
And Max Schroeder is unquestionably playoff player.
And he is as tested if not more tested in the postseason than anybody else the cabs have right now.
Like and I know that you know Sam Merrill won a championship with Milwaukee.
But like Max has a lot of experience in these big moments.
And truthfully, last year if you go back and watch that Indiana series.
Schroeder was the one role player that really stepped up and had a good series.
And I think that is something that's worth remembering as we have these conversations.
So I do think that what the cabs got from him on Sunday might be a little unrealistic to expect on the night of night out basis.
But that's in the scoring department.
It's not fair to expect Max to, like I said, scored 24 points a game in 23 minutes.
The other stuff's fair to expect.
All of the other things and he wasn't good enough defensively.
Anything they got from him was a bonus.
Like I will be critical of the way that James Harden played defense down.
Mitchell played defense key on LSD.
Wait, all of those guys were not good enough defensively.
And even going back to Wednesday against Orlando.
If you want to add Jalen Tyson into that mix, you can and Sam Merrill, you can do that too.
Because they were not good enough defensively against the magic.
And Max can be better and but like he's the one that deserves the least criticism.
Because again, first game since May 11.
That's a long time without playing basketball.
But I expect the rebounding. I expect the playmaking.
I expect the grittiness that Max played with to be a thing that whether or not the scoring is there.
I expect that to be part of who Max is because that is who Max has always been.
And the cabs truthfully too.
The way we look at it, they don't need Max to be that guy scoring once.
He had 24 points.
And part of the reason why that was so beneficial is because James Harden had an off game offensively.
He only had 13 points. He was four of 12.
I think it was the worst game that he's played as a member of the cabs.
And you know, off games are going to happen from time to time.
I have no reason to believe that James is not going to be so much better on Tuesday against Milwaukee Bucks.
And he was on Sunday against Dallas Mavericks.
And even then, like he was really good.
I thought on Friday against the Dallas Mavericks.
And he only had 17 points, but it was a much more efficient game.
And I just thought that he looked so much better in that game.
And then you go back to Wednesday where you had 30 like that's the guy that I expect James Harden to be when push comes to shove.
So they don't need that scoring from Max.
But I think all the little things that he showed he can do.
Like some of the tip outs that he had and some of the different dynamics that he can bring to the cabs offensively.
And I think that this can create some very interesting and fun lines.
Like I am really interested to see.
And again, the cabs don't have a lot of time to figure this out.
But I am very interested to see what lineups they're going to look at.
Because there's an opportunity.
There's a chance that the cabs have their full allotment of wings available for the first time this season on Tuesday night in Milwaukee.
We'll talk about that.
What that can mean and take a quick look ahead to this game against the box.
Snacks right here.
Unlocked on calves.

It was not from Wayfair, but it served its purpose.
But I would only come into this room in my apartment that we have turned into a podcast studio.
I would only ever be in here to record my podcast.
I would watch games, you know, out in the living room.
Games that I'm not at.
I would not do a lot of things in this specific room.
Because the chair wasn't very comfortable.
Now, I've got this chair from Wayfair that was cost effective.
That's extremely comfortable.
And I will sit in here and I've got a TV over off to my left.
I'll watch Cavs games on Monday night, going to watch Orlando take out Atlanta on this TV sitting in this chair because this chair is comfortable because I got it at Wayfair.

And there is a lengthy injury report once more for the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday against Milwaukee bucks.
We already talked about Jared Allen not being available.
Tyrese Proctor is also out with that right quad strain Craig Porter Jr. The Cavs announced going to miss the next one to three weeks because of a groin strain.
But Jalen Tyson who did not play on Sunday against Dallas Mavericks.
He's probable dealing with some ankle soreness and Sam Merrill who has missed last couple of games because of a hamstring strain.
He's been upgraded to questionable and what this means.
There's obviously no guaranteeing this like I would obviously expect Jalen to play will see on Sam can Ackinson did say on Sunday they're going to be conservative with this injury.
So maybe he doesn't play on Tuesday, but if he's questionable on Tuesday, even if he doesn't play, I think that will probably then see him on Thursday at the latest, which is a good sign, but this could mean that while not without restrictions because as Sam comes back from a hamstring injury.
He might be on a minute restriction. We know Max truce is on a minute restriction right now.
Jalen Tyson could be I'm not so sure on that one.
So while it's not without restrictions, we could see the full wing rotation for the Cavs, which at this point is Dean Wade, Keanu Ellis, Jalen Tyson, Sam Merrill, Max truce, we could see all of them for the very first time available for again.
And it is exciting to me to see what Kenny Ackinson.
What strategies he's going to use, what lineups he's going to roll out there and how these guys mesh together because it's important for the Cavs when games they need to hang on to a top four seed in the Eastern conference.
I think at this point, they're probably going to finish fourth at one point.
I thought they could get up to second. They have underachieved since then part of it is because of the injuries without question, but they've underachieved since I thought they could get up to second.
But I think fourth is fine enough. And you know, if they do happen to set up a second round matchup against the Detroit pistons.
I don't think that is the worst thing in the world for the group of Cavaliers.
But I think the most important thing.
Aside from winning basketball games is figuring out how this team fits together. They've got 14 games remaining to do so.
And it begins on Tuesday night against Milwaukee.
Now, as for Milwaukee, Yannis entered the Cumpo is questionable. He's dealing with an ankle sprain.
He did play on Sunday against the Indian of Pacers. He actually left that game after appearing to hyper extend his knee, but the fact that he's listed as questionable despite that.
I think it's pretty remarkable.
So we will have to wait and see. Yannis has not played against the Cavs since earlier this season. He actually, I believe.
Strain his groin against the Cavs. The last time the Bucks were in Cleveland, elsewhere for Milwaukee, Miles Turner coming back from a calf strain.
He's listed as questionable and it was my jam is questionable with an illness. So the Cavs, this is a game again, the Cavs should win.
We'll see if they do win this game, but they will they should at least be a little bit healthier than they have been because.
They've been without four or five guys. That's when the team has really not performed near what it could be, even if those guys are real players.
And there are no excuses for the way they played on Sunday. They need to be so much better than they were.
That's the biggest challenge for them like they need to respond properly to that.
We'll see if they do on Tuesday night in Milwaukee. That is the biggest question moving forward, but having some bodies back in the lineup potentially could be a big boost for them.
We're going to do it for this edition of Lockdown Cavs. You can find this show anywhere you get your podcast. That's on Apple, that's on Spotify, that's on YouTube as well.
