Hello there, and welcome. Are you feeling cozy and ready for a story?

I've got a wonderful one for you today all about a very, very clever cat. Let's get started.

Our story is about a boy named Tom and his cat, but this isn't just any cat.

Look, he's wearing boots. Can you believe it? A kitty and boots. Isn't that the silliest, most wonderful thing?

Let's see what he gets up to.

Once upon a time, way back when, there was a little cottage where a father lived with his three sons.

And one day, the father told them yet a special present for each of them.

Ooh, I wonder what the presents could be.

Well, for the two big brothers, the father gave them each a big bag full of money.

You could hear the coins go clink, clink, jingle inside.

Oh, they were so shiny and golden. The brothers were so, so happy.

But when it was little Tom's turn, he didn't get any clinky coins. Nope.

Instead, his father gave him his most special treasure, a soft, fluffy, purring little kitty.

But, oh dear, look at Tom's face. He doesn't look very happy, does he?

He wanted money, just like his brothers.

Well, the big brothers went away to spend all their money and poor Tom was left all by himself,

with just the little white cat. He felt so sad and he said to the cat,

what could are you? I can't do anything with a cat.

And then you'll never guess what happened.

The cat sat right up and he talked.

He really did in a funny little voice. He said, get me a pair of boots and you'll soon see.

Wow, a talking cat? I've never heard of such a thing.

Tom was so surprised he didn't even think twice.

He ran off and got a teeny tiny pair of boots, just the right size for a cat.

And look at Puss now. He looks so proud and pleased with himself in his new boots.

He looks like he has a very clever plan stirring in his head.

And he did have a plan. Oh, it was a very clever plan indeed.

One day Puss was reading the newspaper and he saw something so exciting.

The king was going to have a big contest and listen to this,

whoever won the contest would become the new king. Wow!

Right away, clever Puss told Tom, we're going to that contest.

So off they went to the huge Grand Palace where the king lived.

It was time for the very first test.

But when they got there, oh dear.

Tom looked around and all the other men in the contest were so big and tall and strong.

Tom felt very small and his tummy felt all fluttery.

His knees even started to feel a bit wibbly wobbly.

Then the king stood up and said, for the first test,

you must throw this ball up, up, up into the air.

And you have to count all the way to 10 before it comes back down.

Hmm, that sounds pretty tricky, doesn't it?

Tom watched the other big, strong men try.

One of them only got to eight, another got to nine.

Tom got so worried.

He thought, oh no, I can't do that.

But then, shhh.

Puss tipped over and whispered a super secret,

super clever idea right into Tom's ear.

So Tom took a deep breath, picked up the ball and threw it way up high.

And as it flew, he shouted, two, four, six, eight, ten.

He did it.

The king thought that was the smartest thing ever,

because counting by twos is still counting.

Hooray!

Tom passed the first test.

Okay, here we go.

It was time for the final, most exciting test of all.

It was gonna be a big, splashy, super speedy race.

And whoever won this race, would be the new king.

Now, for this race, everyone had to carry a big bag.

The other man chose a bag that was nice and light,

filled with fluffy sponges.

Easy to carry, right?

But Tom, hmm, this is strange.

Tom chose a super, super heavy bag, filled with salt.

What do you think clever Puss is planning?

The king shouted, ready, set, go!

And they were off.

They ran and they ran all around the castle gardens.

And then, they came to a big, wide river.

And, splash, right into the cool water they jumped.

And then, the trick happened.

The other man's light, fluffy sponges, went slurp, slurp, slurp,

and soaked up all the water.

They got so heavy he could barely move.

But Tom's heavy bag of salt, well, in the water,

it all just melted away, poof, like magic.

And his bag was as light as a feather.

With his super light bag, Tom swam super fast

and reached the other side first.

He won.

Tom won the race.

The king said, hooray for Tom.

He will be our new king.

But, wait a minute.

Who was the one who had all the clever ideas?

Tom was so excited to be the new king.

But then, he did something that wasn't kind at all.

He looked at the clever little cat who helped him win everything.

And he said, great, now that I'm king, I don't need you anymore.

Oh no, that's not a nice thing to say to a friend who helped you, is it?

Poor Puss was so sad to hear that.

His little ears drooped right down because his feelings were hurt.

But you know who was watching?

The old king.

And that king was very, very wise.

He saw Puss' sad little ears.

And he knew right away who the truly clever one was.

So, the wise old king stood up tall

and said in a big, strong voice, not so fast.

A king must be clever, yes.

But more importantly, a king must be kind.

I know who had all the good ideas.

Clever Puss will be the new king.

And that's exactly what happened.

Puss and Boots became king Puss.

He sat on a big, beautiful throne,

with a sparkly crown on his head and a royal cape.

And he was the kindest, best king ever.

And you know what?

He even gave Tom a job in the palace.

Polishing the king's boots.

That was such a fun story about a very, very clever cat.

It's great to be clever,

but this story shows us that it's even more important to be kind.
