Now back to the game. So the biggest thing today is kind of what we were talking on a bucko brew, the fifth starter.
And we didn't really talk about who was starting today, but that was my cleverger.
But I think my cleverger today really came in and pitched well.
And he might be giving himself a route to being that fifth starter in open today. What do you think of cleverger?
Yeah, so you and I, Neil were basically sitting right behind home plate.
I told you you got to come over and watch this cleverger guy.
He was shoving at the first three innings. He get three clean innings, two ox three strikeouts.
He keeps his ERA at a zero through two games and pitched this spring for him.
Zero earned runs as well.
I would say like he's put his name into the hat for the five starter battle.
I know you guys said you didn't really talk about him on bucko brew.
He's a guy like you could maybe see you and pitch out of the bullpen.
For example, you like you could be a guy that could even make this roster, make the 26 man roster.
Even if it is not just for a five starter role, but like he started in the past,
he could definitely pitch him out of the bullpen.
But like he looked solid today and like 29 strikes on 49 pitches.
Like pretty efficient.
Yeah, and I speak of the bullpen and I think he just, he has that one pitch intangible so far.
Like he had that change up.
The change up had the majority of his 11 whiffs today in his three innings.
It was really moving.
It was sitting around like 86, 88 miles an hour on top of his fastball.
That was sitting 96.
Like it had the stuff working today.
He limited the heart contact and the rates.
The race had very few answers for what he was laying down today.
Yeah, and like he was efficient, especially a first inning pop out, walk, fly out and caught steam.
They got out of the inning quick.
He was able to work with the defense as well.
And he also had a nice play on a comebacker in my opinion.
Really like sharp whiner right to him made the play through a right to first.
Pretty impressive stuff.
Like it was my first time seeing my cleverger pitch in person.
I know it's been a while since he's like he's been like that steady big leader
because of like other things that have happened with him in the past.
But it's like it's fine to get a job on a big league squad and he's looked good so far.
Yeah.
And I was surprised.
I didn't really have him on my radar as a fifth starter.
It wasn't really something I was thinking would even happen.
But if he keeps pitching like this, he's going to make, as Doc Kelly said,
is he going to make some tough decisions with this fifth starter role or even in the bullpen?
So be interesting to see how that goes.
On the offensive side early on, there wasn't a whole lot of offense early.
The pirate scored one run in the first six innings.
And that was because of, well, Jake Mangum, who goes two for three.
And also starts causing a little chaos in the base pass there.
And I want to say was the second or third inning?
It was in the bottom of the third inning.
Bottom of the third.
Yeah.
We're what runners on first and third.
He steals second base.
Incredible jump.
The race slowed down.
They fumbled the ball.
We score a run without even needing to put the ball in play.
And we take a one-nothing lead.
What do you think of Mangum today?
Yeah.
So it's funny.
I had a race fan and older gentleman sitting behind me.
And he tapped me on the shoulder.
I was like, are you a pirate fan?
I was like, yeah.
But he's like, man, the race really messed up with that trade.
And he was talking me through it.
He was like, yeah, you guys got Brandon Lau.
Yeah, I really like Mason Montgomery.
But like, Jake Mangum, he's a hustler.
He's a good kid to root for.
And I was like, yeah, Yensers already love him.
And it appears like he's an older rookie.
He's coming off of a really underrated kind of year with the race.
Kind of quiet.
But like, he's a pesky type of player.
Yeah.
And just watching that play happen.
Like, he's taken the distraction off of Alika Williams.
Alika Williams is easily able to score on that ball.
Because we're just trying to get Jake Mangum the whole time.
Throwing right past the second baseman into center field.
I mean, that is the type of player of the pirates.
I think we've been wanting them to have like that personality.
Like, we've seen him like, you guys had him last week on the show a couple times.
He can talk.
And he's a really personable player.
And like, the pirates need one of those like Josh Harrison types back on this team.
A Sean Rodriguez type.
One of those like pesky utility dudes that you can plug in.
That'd be a spark plug.
And like, he seems to be like that perfect fourth outfielder.
Like, he's going to provide you some defense.
Sure, there was a misdive today.
But then come back to bite him.
Yeah.
I mean, it wasn't like it was a pretty impressive ball to get to in this place too.
Mangum is going to be the real fan favorite among people who love small ball.
And for the people who are always at their real little kids,
little league games yelling about hustle.
Yes.
He's going to be that guy that's going to be really, really popular.
And he's already happened.
Like, people love this guy.
And I like watching him play.
You know, it's a lot of fun.
And I'm really happy with you.
Even if he's only like our fourth outfielder, he's a lot of fun to play.
It's funny.
Like, when I was talking to the raised guy behind me,
he was basically saying like, he's going to be that type of player.
He's going to hit for high average.
And I was adding like, he's probably not going to hit you many home runs.
And he's like, yeah, he's probably going to hit like maybe one to four a year.
And I was like, that's kind of all the pirates need him to be.
Like, don't force what he isn't.
Do what he's been good at.
Hit for a high average.
Sure, you're not going to probably get an OPS in the 700s.
But like, still, if you're hitting it for high average,
I can take that any of the day of the week.
Especially if he's still providing you great defense.
And if he is that fourth outfielder that you can substitute late in the game,
or like even start a few games.
And he can still hit at the top or bottom of the order.
That makes this team a lot better.
So yeah, far, I like what I've been seeing out of him.
I agree.
And after Clevanger leaves, Karmy Majinski comes in.
He struggles at first and walks some people.
He ends up giving up one run.
But it could have been much worse.
He really battled back and limited the raise offense.
And when he leaves, it's 1-1.
But afterward, Denardo actually got to interview him.
And so here is Anthony Denardo talking with Karmy Majinski
after his appearance today in sprint training.
All right.
So I'm here with Karmy Majinski.
Karmy, now I'm just going to say this because I walked in here today
and the first thing I heard from the security was,
what was your name?
I said Anthony.
He was like, oh, it's a nice Italian name.
So I'm going to say a nice Polish name, right?
So I want to ask you in Pittsburgh,
what's the best parogi spot for you?
Oh my goodness.
If I'm being honest, it's got to be the ones that Chef Tony makes in the clubhouse.
Oh, OK.
Those are super good.
And then there's a few little restaurants
over by like Natrana Heights and Fox Chapel area.
I can't remember the name off the top of my head honest.
So there's a spot.
I got to stick with the guy who's coping for this every day.
All right.
All right.
Now, and also I just want to add on to this.
Halapini Hannah is the best parogi, too, right?
Would you say so?
Halapini Hannah?
She's the best one?
I don't know.
Who wins the most race this last year?
I think, was it Halapini Hannah?
I think I might have been.
Well, whoever freaking won the most race last year definitely takes it.
So whoever the winner is, right?
I like it.
That's right.
So I want to ask you, too.
So last year you experimented as a starter,
went back into the bullpen.
Now, as well, I think set of that.
I know you're incorporating like a splitter.
You added the curve ball, which is really effective.
We're kind of sequencing.
Talking this year, maybe going back and looking at being a starter potentially.
What do you think could be the biggest difference of being in the rotation this year?
Yeah.
Looking forward to it.
You know, the difference are going to come from like experiences and failures
and figuring out how to succeed from that.
And I think kind of the adjustments I'm in the second half there were good.
I had some success there and had a good run towards the very end of the year.
And it was still in length, which was good.
That gives me confidence to say, this wasn't just like a one inning thing.
This was three innings, sometimes four innings there at the very end.
So I think the current challenge is, it's not necessarily the second time through for me right now.
I think it's going to be the third time through.
I think that's where I'm going to have to figure out my mechanics a little bit more.
And I think hopefully this spring will be able to have enough volume to be able to see that.
And I think those pitches that I developed in that second half,
talking about the split and the curveball specifically,
are going to give me more room for my fastballs to play a little bit better.
So in a simple way to put it, there's more space in the strike zone out with those two pitches out.
And I felt that last year like it.
It was essentially, it gave me the ability to be more efficient.
And then it helped with the swing and mess as well.
So hopefully just kind of build off of that package I built at the end of last year.
And then take that into this season.
Okay. And like, is there any different focus on coming in the spring?
Is it just making that more effective?
Or I mean, a Bill Murphy coming in, like anything else, maybe adding into that?
Yeah, I mean, I'm definitely working with Bill every day.
I think he's an awesome guy to work with.
I've really enjoyed being around him every day.
He's super, super cerebral.
And the guy can think the game.
And he's just very on top of what he wants us to work on.
And what he kind of wants us to focus on throughout our work days.
And then the conversations are just very easy to be back and forth from him
because he is so thoughtful about what he does throughout the day.
Okay.
And yeah, just continuing to develop what kind of build off of last year
and make the adjustments as we go, I think, you know, something I've kind of seen in my career
is I've definitely struggled early in the seasons.
And just having awareness of that going into this year, I know, is going to help me immediately, right?
Like, I want to make adjustments faster this year.
I don't want it to take, you know, three, four weeks with a crooked number DRA.
Sure.
Set back down, come back up, and then make the changes, right?
Like, I think I have the ability now and the confidence going into my fourth season
with this club in the big leagues to say I can make adjustments fast.
So let's go ahead and do that this year.
Well, great stuff.
Well, hey, once again, I want to appreciate you taking your time out.
Talk to us.
Karma Zinski.
Have a great season.
Of course, man.
Thank you very much.
Absolutely.
Yeah, appreciate it.
Thanks, Zinski, after his appearance today and today's game.
And now I'm here with Alex.
Alex, how are you doing?
I'm doing well.
Thanks for joining us.
We got to see a couple of young prospects.
You know, we already need De La Santos.
And, um, how have you, our Revis, got both hit home runs.
They were back to back and put three runs up on the boards.
What did you, what did you make of those guys today?
Yeah, I mean, it's exciting to see with De La Santos in particular.
I've got a high, you know, a penny of this kid.
I think he could be an impact player in the future.
So even if it is the late innings of a spring training game and on March 2nd,
it's good to see him put together a swing like that.
And, you know, it was a game-winning homer.
It was.
And that's the second home run of the spring, of spring training so far.
He's really making a big impact.
And so it was really, really cool to see those.
It's really cool in spring training seeing those guys.
You don't get to see much of make big impacts like that.
It's really promising.
And that was the first time I've ever heard of Revis in my life.
And that was a really good way to do it.
Like, that was, that was a tank of a home run.
Yeah, it was super cool.
No ball.
Sorry.
Yeah, if De La Santos was, you know, a wall scraper just had enough on it.
Yeah.
Revis was a no doubt.
Revis, I'm, I, Stadcast from, I first had it at 390 and I think that was well over 400.
But anyway, we also got to listen to Don Kelly after the game in his pressur.
What did you make of Don Kelly's comments today?
Pretty standard kind of what I expected right there.
The big one I took away was, I mean, I asked the question,
but what he had to say about Maginsky and just being able to use that splitter
especially against left handers, you know, neutralize them,
be able to throw the fastball up in the zone.
I know this wasn't Maginsky's best day on the mound,
but like, the way that he was able to use the splitter I think was a very encouraging sign.
Yeah, and that's what you really want to see out his brain training.
It's not the results is about the fact that he's able to use his brand new splitter in an effective way.
Yeah.
And so even if he was struggling with those strikes today, you know, that's okay.
Like, this is the time to get the kinks out.
And I was, I really liked how he was able to fight through all that stuff.
Yeah, not only did he have it, he went to it after he's like,
I don't really have the fastball right now.
And I think that shows a lot of the confidence he has in the pitch.
Yeah.
And then we will now go to Don Kelly's interview.
Yeah.
And here it is.
How nice was it to get a what's the point of your today going into the morning?
Yeah.
He did a great job, you know, involved.
He's done well really well.
A lot of coaches have changed up this.
It was really good.
Yeah.
We just had a comment.
Spent up a little bit at the game.
I mean, one the game, he wouldn't have been the game,
helped win the game for us.
I mean, there are a lot of big plays with the fact he was able to slow things down there
and only one run across the plate, you know,
really was able to bear down us, especially that, you know,
put out at home plate if he's able to get over and make that play.
And then get out of that in was actually huge.
And then found his stride, settled in.
And I thought he could have balled up.
Kind of like what he could with scores the first run.
But he kind of changed the place.
I could have scored the end of that third.
How much the diversity could he have helped in terms of having to have
whether it's here or in my place?
Yeah.
This huge one, especially the way he can play defense up the middle.
You know, there's not a lot of guys that can play to you like him.
And he's going to have a good advance too.
We think I might find a trick to bring it to the competition this time.
He brings an edge.
He brings that compete factor in how he goes about it.
He's had a happy career.
And, you know, he's got the experience to go with it.
And something that can help around the pitching staff too.
A guy that's been there and been through full season like that.
Spencer obviously missed out.
Last spring, he was injury.
He talked to him about how he's kind of enjoyed the ability to ramp up that
in normal pace this year.
You know what?
Talk to him, but not necessarily specifically about that.
It just seems like he's in a really good spot.
More relaxed this year.
Not dealing with the injury.
And also being able to settle into a rhythm last year towards the end of the season,
which you talked about.
You did a really good job of dealing with that.
Just happy for him that he's healthy and doing really well.
I'm going to give you a huge high velocity guide.
You mentioned the change of pace.
He's around 95.
96.
And he's in a normal pace.
And that helps that change of pace.
Huge.
Yeah.
That's the way that change up was acting too.
And then if he can get that up, take a B-Lo.
I mean, honestly, he's, he may be one of the most athletic guys that I've seen
on the mound the way that he moves.
And it's, I know he was really excited about the working up season
to be able to add that B-Lo and to pair it with the other stuff
that he's able to offer.
It's a good combination.
You know, of course, I was in the sign of change.
I've provided a little bit of time to find the outfit.
How is he adapted to the right field?
Not much of the work is he had to put it to get his arm and his legs ready for that.
You know, they mostly put it in a tiny toilet.
He's, he's amazing.
You know, when you see the way that he goes about it,
that play and right field today, that line drives.
I wasn't when he's played.
He made it look really easy coming in on it and really smooth.
And just goes to show you the better he is and the work that he's put in out there.
You know, we'll see him at first a little bit too.
And he's not a great job of adapting to, to right field and being able to read those
because those line drive ones are tough.
And do, do you have any concerns at all about why he's expensive
to be able to help him?
No, you know what?
I don't.
And I say that in the limited interactions that I've had with him and the,
the human being, the compete.
I mean, he saw it today.
We were in a contract form and he shut it down.
He wanted to stay out there and run and, you know,
got the, not their ball ball over the catcher side,
but fly in here in the second base.
He's a baseball player and he's going to be really good,
regardless of what he's for a South field.
He likes to play and likes to play.
All right.
I'm going back to Carmen for this player to talk about
how it was a recent pitch for him today.
How have you seen that pitch kind of a ball since he got recalled by his dear
and what has it been that he could go to the right in front?
Yeah, a lot.
It keeps the lefties neutral.
He's going down last year.
He really did a nice job of, you know, adapting that pitch
to be a really big weapon form, especially against left-handed,
but it's been successful against righties, too.
It's kept the lefties neutral and allowed his basketball
to play out with it as well.
Obviously, very, very early.
But seeing her during Carmen's pitch in the same game
and how much confidence in that pitch that you've been doing,
the depth you have in the pitch startable.
Yeah, depth.
It's kind of, it's going to be tough decisions, you know,
when you're talking about the startable bench spots,
guys are playing well and it's a really cool thing to see the competitions
that are going on and just talking about those two in particular.
You know, they threw the ball really well today and looking forward to
seeing how the rest of Carmen shakes out.
All right.
And that was Don Kelly.
I really liked what he was talking about Ryan O'Hern.
Talking about him adjusting to the outfield every day.
Like, what have you noticed from O'Hern?
And what do you think Don's comments about him?
I mean, I think it shows the type of player O'Hern is.
Like, not just, you know, what he's got produced on the back of the baseball card,
but there are a lot of guys who would be like, you know,
I'm a free agent.
I'm a potential go-glove caliber, you know, first baseman.
Maybe they wouldn't be as willing to make a jump to the outfield,
but, you know, it adds another potential big bad news, you know.
So I think that's more my big takeaway from him.
And I mean, there's got to be some, maybe not learning curves.
He's played there a lot, but like, he looked comfortable enough out there for me.
He did look comfortable.
And I love his attitude.
Like, he's a guy who clearly understands his role as a veteran leader in the clubhouse.
And I love that he's just leading by example with what he, you know,
he could have complained.
He could have thrown a fit.
But instead, he's really just embraced his role.
He's probably going to be the everyday right-fielder.
And I mean, like, he keeps hitting.
He hit today as well.
He's hitting previous games.
And I'm really excited to see him as a pirate for the next two years.
You know, it's him talking about wanting to be here.
Yeah.
You know, this off season, I think really was good for the culture.
But he's also back at it up right now.
Yeah.
No, I love everything I'm seeing.
But that's going to wrap it up for us.
The pirates win 4-1.
Another win in spring training for the box.
Hopefully that translates to a regular season.
Thank you everyone for watching.
