On this date in astronomical history, we celebrate one of the most profound discoveries

in modern astronomy.

March 7th, 1989, the launch of the cosmic background explorer, Kobe Satellite.

Picture this.

Scientists and engineers at Mass' Goddard Space Flight Center had just sent a spacecraft

into the heavens with a mission so audacious, so technically challenging, that many thought

it boarded on impossible.

The Kobe Satellite was designed to do something that sounds almost poetic, to detect the faint

afterglow of the big bang itself, the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Now here's where it gets genuinely thrilling.

The CMB is incredibly faint, just 2.7 Kelvin above absolute zero.

It's almost incomprehensibly cold.

Kobe had to be sensitive enough to detect temperature variations of just a few millions

of a degree across the entire sky.

Hagen tried to find the difference between two ice cubes when they're separated by billions

of light years.

Over the following years, Kobe would provide humanity with the most detailed map of the

universe's infancy ever captured, essentially giving us a baby picture of the cosmos itself.

The data revealed tiny temperature fluctuations that would eventually become galaxies, stars,
