So our guest today is Alexandra Pregalinsky and she's an esteemed AI scholar and vice president at Cosminsky University where she directs international relations and oversees the human machine interaction research center. With extensive research experience and prestigious institutions like MIT and Harvard, Alexandra brings a deep understanding of collaborative AI to her role as a key member of the campus AI program council. Her significant contributions to the field are highlighted in her published works with the MIT press Cambridge University press. Alexandra began her academic journey with a PhD from new school for social research, which is why we're going to refer to her as doctor.

Dr. Alexandra welcome. Thank you so much for having me Ron. I'm very happy to be here. Fantastic. Well, before we dive into the details of campus AI, could you tell us a little about your journey into the world of AI and what inspired you to co-found campus AI? Yes, well, I will say that my pathway to artificial intelligence has been quite rocky because I started with philosophy and I majored in philosophy, but I was fortunate enough to have a lecture who was to us philosophers presenting their final course.
I was very proud of the foundations of artificial intelligence as a sort of philosophical quest, you know, that really forces us to ask questions about the future of humanity, the boundaries between the human brain and the synthetic brain of any sort. I was such a fascinating lecture that I actually really thought that this was a field that was full of challenges and that for a scholar like myself, who is pretty much interested in everything out there, both in the technical side of things, but also in those philosophical questions about, you know, the future and future directions of technology. It would be a very good field to study and then I started learning how to program and I started programming myself. I became very fascinated with bots and virtual assistants and Ron, it was at the time when those assistants were not really doing a very good job. So most of them were definitely not context aware and not responding well to user queries and very often quite quite well not smart, let's say.
So I do remember that my advisor at that time told me that perhaps it was not the best field to study and that the touring test was very, very far away, but still I decided to stick to it because it was fascinating to me and that's how I enrolled into my PhD program. I started working in the field of AI both as a researcher, but also as a practitioner because I wanted to be a practitioner from the very start for me, the theory part was not the only interesting part. So ever since for the past 12 years, I have been working actively in the field of natural language processing and as you said, also human computer interaction, right. So how to manage human bot conversation, how to make them successful was something that was interesting for me for my research team, also for the research teams that I've joined at MIT at the Center for Collective Intelligence and also at Harvard. Two years ago, a chat GPT revolutionized pretty much everything when it comes to AI and became this label, I would say, of new AI systems, generative artificial intelligence systems.
And I do know, I guess like many of your listeners that artificial intelligence is much older than chat GPT and we have seen really acceleration already five, 10 years ago, very interesting systems have been built, but I think because of the fact that chat GPT was very powerful and at the same time very accessible, it became that big galvanizing power that introduced artificial intelligence to the mass audience. But together with that, I think came many questions about how to use generative artificial intelligence well, how to really benefit from it, where are the best use cases. And we saw those questions being asked by many different practitioners. And this is something that motivated us to start campus AI, which in fact is a learning platform, a platform to learn about generative artificial intelligence in a very basic way, but also in a very advanced way. To learn how to prompt again in a basic way, but also in a very advanced way in order to control the system so that it gives you really the output that you need.
And we did notice that this sort of education that is kind of wholesome in the sense that it teaches you about AI and generative AI and the place of one within the other. And also shows you a practical potential of this technology is very important because together with this big AI revolution came also a very big frenzy and to some degree also information chaos around artificial intelligence. Is it a good technology? Is it a bad technology? I think 2023 was a year of many polarizing discussions around artificial intelligence. So you did see growth in terms of AI algorithms and their capacity, their complexity, but you also saw many scholars, many people expressing concern around artificial intelligence. And I think it is very important to provide high quality education on this topic in order for people to be less scared of artificial intelligence and more excited about it and also to use it in more and more advanced way.
I love that you know your researcher, but you also said you want to be a practitioner and I think that's really important because if you're only in one of those camps, there's a component missing to really getting to the essence of things. So I love that you do that. You also mentioned collaborative AI. Can you can you speak to that a little bit? What what do you define collaborative a is? Collaborative AI is in fact a paradigm within artificial intelligence that hasn't been explored. I think enough. It's a paradigm that tells us that artificial intelligence is our tool and should be designed in such a way to serve as a tool for humans to enhance their productivity, perhaps to make their work also more satisfying to help out. Right. So it's a technology that should in fact collaborate with you. And you know, there is a whole concept. There is a design around collaborative AI how to build such systems right to make them more in a way personalized to your needs and to make them more collaborative in fact right.
So you make them work with you as your sparring partners as your assistants or in whatever other capacity or role that you see them in. And this whole paradigm comes from robotics. I think that is very interesting and not many people know that because in robotics, we have co bots so bots or robots actually physical systems that were built in order to work alongside humans, for instance, in factories, where it's a matter of safety also. There are communication between the human and the machine and their collaboration actually is smooth right and that the machine reads human intentions well and can effectively works alongside human and a good example of that would be also a robot. I have seen examples that were similar to the one that I'm going to provide right now, but it's kind of I think it's embracing the whole concept of collaboration very well. So imagine a robot that works together with you and adjust to the pace of your work. And it can also work a bit slower because you need a break right because you're a human and you need a break.
And then I think this is very, very important. And we have not explored, as I said before, this paradigm enough. And now we have all those very advanced, very complex AI systems. And I think that in theory, they should serve as our collaborators, but in many ways, people think of them as something that either will replace them right or work instead of them. And for me, actually a very interesting future vision is a one where artificial intelligence is supporting us in whatever it is that we do. Or perhaps we do delegate some of our work to it routine works of any kind, but there are also strategic decisions that we make as humans. And in that way, we are not thinking of AI systems as something that can take those decisions, but actually this is something that is important to be left for us, right, these are the decisions that we should be making. So in this whole concept, you have, I think, a very interesting expression human in the loop or rather human in the center where crucial decisions about whatever it is that we are doing, whatever activity, whatever task are made by humans and artificial intelligence is supposed to assist that human.
Not so good. The term, the term AI agent, most of us that are in around AI, we understand what that is. And it sounds like collaborative AI is a more detailed description of what that AI agent is. So it's just technology that's collaborating with, I'll just say it can be a bigger picture, but you as an individual, but it certainly can be a collaborative AI with a whole company or a whole organization. But let's just stick to the individual collaborative AI is the AI agent that you might choose to work with that will continually learn you learn your likes learn the things that you've corrected it on and become your, you know, personal or business doesn't matter, but assistant and life to assist with all things, but at your control and your command. Is that accurate? I think it is accurate to a large extent that I do see that we have right now plenty of opportunities to actually explore collaborative AI so we can have assistance such as GPT's for instance that can be helpful in so many different ways you can feed them particular knowledge instructions prompts and they're going to specialize in that help you in say whatever task you want them to help you with.
You can also have agents like you said yourself that are going to be an extended version of those assistance because an agent can in fact communicate with the online world right can query databases access different parts of the internet also help you out in that way. So I think this is very close to collaborative AI, but I still think that you know we can enhance this concept of collaboration even more and I'm going to give you two examples. One is that during our recent research we've decided to build an alternative version of chat GPT so what we did is we in fact, you know, we built an application on top of GPT the language model. That was hard coded for asking you additional questions and actually you know sort of it was supposed to each and every time you prompted it kind of try to understand what the context of your prompt was by asking you additional questions by asking whether it understood whatever you want it.
By prompting you back it sounds like in a way yes exactly so or fixing the prompt because you know it was supposed to be slightly more you know slightly more detailed in order for the system to actually do a better job for you right so it was self prompting self self fixing in that way. And it really enhanced the dialogue so in our experiment was very visible that people talk to it and for some of them it was very I think surprising because they were used to the fact that whenever they prompt a large language model they immediately get an answer the output is there. But in our case it resembled more a human teammate really that works together with you and tries to figure out whatever it is that you want from it. So for us this you know simple procedure of hard coding has led to completely different experience in terms of the design of this technology and what it means to work together with it because in fact the task was done together by the human and by the AI and not just prompted by you and given back to you by AI so that was a difference.
And the other thing that I wanted to say is a very recent research work we did we carried out it's still ongoing is about personality and generative artificial intelligence human personality so we carried out a big five tests these are very standard tests of personality that check for your openness. So we had a lot of different personalities, consciousness, consciousness, neuroticism and a couple of other features and we were trying to figure out how different personality types collaborate with artificial intelligence for instance with a generative AI agent and it turned out that you know patterns of collaboration. Really and you can have a very personalized assistant today like you said yourself that's not going to only align with the task that it's supposed to do or form of collaboration whether you delegate tasks through it or like share them together with the assistant but also will align to some extent with your preferences that are a result of your personality. It turned out for instance that people who are slightly more neurotic and prefer to treat an assistant as a proxy to the rest of the team right this is their preferred place for artificial intelligence in the whole set of activities that they're doing and people who are extremely conscientious would not allow artificial intelligence to do anything instead of them they were just trying to kind of control each and every process regardless whether it was a routine process or something more creative.
So I think these are very interesting takeaways because because we really can have now very flexible personalized assistance that can work together with us and this is what collaborative AI also means to me. So if we go from there into marketing AI within marketing is is certainly changing the industry in many ways but campus AI how do they integrate AI into the marketing strategies and and you know what benefits does it bring to the learners of you from your platform. Well, I would say that campus AI is also a generative platform so it's not only about AI and it's not only educating about generative AI to be more specific but it's also a platform that has been built from scratch with the help of AI and AI is sort of present everywhere on that platform. So the founder our relus who started you know working on this very concept he actually created a couple of generative agents or assistance for himself with and with those assistants he had worked on this very early phase of campus AI as a concept right so even the exchange right between him and the agents was in fact you know the first phase of of building the project.
So we're building campus AI and it was very much AI driven in that way but also currently what we use in campus AI are avatars right so we use AI avatars with clones of voices and we actually divide them into two groups we have avatars of real people like myself instructors but we also have completely synthetic characters that are also our tutors or our teachers. All the classes are actually conducted by avatars which I think makes it very interesting makes it very scalable too because those avatars can speak whatever language we want them to speak in whatever style we want them to speak. But also I think it's extremely interesting because whenever something changes in artificial intelligence updating the platform is very very simple right and those avatars are also a vehicle for us to kind of I think promote the platform to show the platform because they have become those characters with their little lives I would say they are personas that people can recognize.
And they have become you know in a way sort of the faces of campus AI online out there so that's one example of how we you know deployed an hour promotional or marketing strategy artificial intelligence but I would say that everything that we do when it comes to communication with the with the outside world with whatever audiences. Because we would like to attract is actually co written and co made with artificial intelligence right so we are very transparent about it this is an experiment by itself we want to see how far this collaborative approach can take us so whatever marketing communication we actually create. AI is in there for sure when we are trying to teach for instance about yeah yeah go ahead. All of the features that you're describing here are they operational now what what is the status of campus AI now is it fully operational obviously improving all the time but what's the status as a no.
The campus AI is absolutely operational has a couple of thousand clients already mostly in Poland but we are entering the phase of expansion as we are speaking right now and the English version will be out very very soon so it is operational however our ambitions are slightly bigger than what we currently have right so we do have those avatars we have content that is co generated with AI we have everything you know. So with AI we have we are teaching about different models I was needing to say prior that for instance when we have a course about music we also generate music with artificial intelligence and this is how we showcase the course because we would like our audiences to not only learn about how it's done how you can generate music using prompts and which models you should be using or could be using but also to actually. So we like them feel that they can do it themselves right so we are very receptive to their works whatever it is that they do with chat GPT with models for video generation movie generation image generation we are trying to display also the the work of people who are our our customers but it is an operational platform however as I said prior it's also a platform that is continuously developing and actually our next step is to be able to do it.
And actually our next step is to build a fully responsive platform so in a way I think I could call it a promptable platform over there I think so in that stage the degree of your interaction with that platform will also be to a large extent motivated by how you want this platform to look for you and to serve you right so we would like to create a platform where you can query those avatars you can. You can ask them whatever questions you want to ask them they are sort of like the agents that you can interact with on whatever topic you want them to interact with. And also we want the platform itself to personalize itself according to your preferences right so it's not just something that. And where you are a passive customer and you just see whatever feed it is that we've constructed for you but instead we want this platform to be very different for each and every user not in the way.
That social media work but actually in a way where you actively prompt the platform and then the courses are you know designed build shown to you in a way you want to see them and experience them. So another thing I really found fascinating is your innovative organizational culture that you talk about so campus AI can you elaborate on on how your platform embodies web three culture which you know a lot of listeners this probably understand what that is. And then there'll be others that don't yet I would think over time web three probably web three's best friend is AI because it's going to make it far more functional but what's the impact on your community in regard to a sort of web three culture that you've embodied. So I think this is a great question because campus AI the strategy behind campus AI and also its expansion was not to create a global product that would be the same for everyone but rather to create local hubs right so local communities on of innovators who want to work with AI who want to learn about AI and teach others about AI.
And sort of build that ecosystem together using the tools and the frameworks that we can provide for them right those avatars they're all obviously something that you can change you can replace one avatar with another but the framework is sort of there and the content is also already there but I think our concept was to really grow it in a way bottom up where you have a local community that would like to launch campus AI. That this is something that we can certainly offer and here there's also this I would say web three zero or decentralized components of it so we believe that people who are with us as our customers on campus AI are embarking together with us on a journey where all of us are our sort of agents right and we can also all of us. We shape and change this platform and I think whenever you are very active at the platform this is something that can be seen and rewarded if you from our campus AI course participant want to at some point turn into a course creator there is a possibility for you and our tokens also this is you know a vision for the future but we would like to give people tokens for their participation and introduce some form let's say.
The way of liquid democracy where this platform is not governed just by the CEO or the you know core team but it's but in fact in many ways is co governed by the whole community that establishes it also in the context of you know the allocated time the time spent the degree of participation I think everyone who participates more will be rewarded with you know more more power in directing the the future of this platform so this is I think this. Web 300 component that you're mentioning and obviously we are already conceptualizing how this can be technically embedded in the platform itself currently what we see is that our users are extremely active they are a community of people who finish courses this is very different you have many online platforms where people start and then you know at some point something takes their attention elsewhere or they forgot that they started and the conversion rate. In terms of those who finish the courses is quite low but I think the mechanics of our platform and the fact that we encourage this participation and we want this platform platform to be as promptable as possible this is something that helps out in building bigger engagement so yeah this is this is our vision for the future as well.
So that's a community plus AI management right that's a model it's a model that really includes it it's it's it is what decentralization of what three is about right including everybody. You know to help the whole. Platform which in turn helps everybody so it sounds like you've you've really gone out of your way to to make sure that that is recognized throughout. And is that a model that can reshape traditional organizational management with thing companies. Well I think in many ways it's very promising we are at an early phase the concepts were there for a while already when you think about liquid democracy it's not an entirely new concept it's been out there. You know it's been proposed but it's just very a difficult way of managing and I think that the reason why it was not explored to that extent is because it's just extremely complex. But like you said yourself we currently have artificial intelligence we can perhaps combine it with blockchain to some extent and there we can sort of measure and manage this degree of participation slightly better than we used to right with the traditional technologies that we're helping us out.
In managing organizations so I am hopeful that it is possible I think that our official intelligence and its current form extremely accessible in many ways very intuitive is finding a technology that can take us forward and and embolden us to really explore those models right of of. Collaborative collective action that we have not been exploring because they were just extremely difficult or felt very fmero in the sense that they can work once but they will not work stably so now with AI with this is something we are. You know hoping for that this actually can be this can be done because to me and I think you know to do the whole team at campus AI we have this intuition that this revolution is also different in a sense that. Artificial intelligence generative AI allows you for more agency and activity for instance with social media you were more of a passive audience to whatever feed was given to you according to your known or unknown preferences so you never knew what's going to pop up right in front of you on your new speed what's going to be relevant and why and you were just consuming that content but notice with the generative artificial intelligence you.
You know what, you know you know what is the thing and how is it going to be available to you and the other people are the one from things so it's about your decision what is that you want to see you know that the model will somehow show you and I think this is a change and it's a change that can also help in building more participatory management culture. So in light of that how do you think the role of traditional managers are going to evolve in in a set up like like you just described. So I think that's a great question. I guess remains to be seen but I think traditional managers are also you know benefiting already now those who you know wish to explore artificial intelligence they probably already already see it and and feel it. So it can be a great help for them right that you can surround yourself with different agents of different kinds and distribute some of the workload to them get feedback from them obviously you have to be cautious about it you cannot delegate too much to them as I said right I think human and the look is is very important here.
I think their way of managing can be challenged but also can be a made way more fun than it used to be and way more interesting. I can give you one example this is not about management work but it's just example from from my life I recently published a book together with my co author. Tamila Tremtoro we are both data scientists and we wrote a book about collaboration with artificial intelligence which was actually written as a collaboration with artificial intelligence so we wrote the book together with four AI agents. And we've explored you know different patterns of how to write that book the first idea was to generate the book and then try to edit it so that resembles something that would be you know more hours or at least we would feel that it's more of our contribution and that didn't work at all. So what we did instead is we wrote a book from scratch and then we decided to enhance it with artificial intelligence and we were still kind of in charge it was our input but the agents were supporting us in generating interesting ideas for titles of chapters or reorganizing the content of the book fixing our style to make it more accessible to wider audiences.
The most interesting agent was actually our critic that was given one prompt and the prompt was you don't like this book you are an experienced reviewer from this and this you know publishing house and you just don't like this book and you have your reasons not to like it. And then you know we would send the chapters chapter by chapter to that critic and the critic would actually provide very interesting and insightful criticism to us right to our work was a sort of you know a very interesting feedback loop that I think in many ways elevated the quality of our book and my experience of writing this book and I think also our experience at campus AI of working with the agents to come up with the concept of campus AI in an iterative process. I think to a large extent illustrates the change that managers will also see in their work right where they can open themselves up to working with AI but they also have to figure out how AI can be working effectively with their teams that they are managing where is the place where artificial intelligence is an role on the team or is it an assistant to the whole team.
I think there are many very intriguing questions here to ask that the managers if they still want to continue being managers have to sort of ask themselves right how to incorporate AI in a meaningful way to the to the organization to their own work and also to the work of people that they supervise so. I have to tell you this is reminds me of a there's someone I know very well that is a manager and when he's addressing his team now on zoom he actually in the background types into AI if he comes up with something he's trying to get across he actually types it into AI and I don't know in no exact platformer he's using and he says to it give me a two line punchy example that will get this point across. And he's in a live meeting and he comes up with these singers that are amazing through this process without his team really knowing that he's doing it and that's just a small example of an assist to the manager to get more powerful outcomes.
Yeah I fully agree and I think it's very good to start somewhere and this is a very interesting and good use case. The use case that that I provided was more of I would say in advance throw for that model because perhaps not everyone would actually welcome feedback from artificial intelligence like we did you know from the critic that we've created. But actually it felt like you do have a sparring partner here that you have you know a system that is a cognitive help that it's really supporting you in doing that that job the core of that job that you're doing. And this is a feedback that you need that is useful and that perhaps no of your none of your friends would provide because they never have time and so to me there are so many different modalities in which AI can be introduced also into management and the example that you gave is I think in many ways so great because it's simple and is very actionable. Yeah and I do like the critic thing I've always been you know I've always had a belief that it's more powerful in life to be the question as opposed to the answer and a lot of what you've described with campus AI is getting more questions and asking more questions yet you're able to do it in real time and your your critic agent is just phenomenal.
So you're going to get you're only going to get better by listening to that and and they all have a personal critic assistant or call it is a dream it's an actual dream and I the way you guys utilize what I think is truly fantastic and I for one will be what is the name of the book. Converging minds and published by Rutledge it just came out on pre sale currently it's going to be out in you know in bookstores i'm assuming around mid mid June so very very soon but I can also tell you that we utilize the same strategy at campus AI because campus AI when someone visits our website campus.ai where you will see is a building actually it's a building in the future we hope it will be a metaverse building. Building that you can actually wrong and then visit different floors currently it's a building because it's supposed to resemble an innovation hub in a school sort of at the same time and on different floors you have different things that you can.
And actually do there right on one floor we have this prompt crafting school so it's a school that is focused on good prompting from the basics to more advanced strategies of prompting like I said before. And on another one you have a maker space and in that maker space we want to display the works of our students of campus AI right to be them a visual works or movies done with AI or you know sound bites or whatever it is that they they've done pieces of code. But the third floor is called a gym and actually this is a floor for rescaling and here what we've decided to do is is introduce agents and assistance that can first diagnose you know on the basis of what you've done so far and your work of life until now. So what would be a very good rescaling strategy if you want to jump into that AI world that you have not known prior and we have a couple of different options for different people you know with different backgrounds and obviously we are expanding that but there is a tutor that that is an AI tutor it's in fact an avatar right that is helping you out in.
So what would be the next good step forward if you want to reskill and enter this AI space you can be an AI developer architect you can be an AI ethicist right and there are different courses that you can take in order to actually learn about that a bit and to reskill yourself but also that agent is your evaluator. And if it doesn't seem to be working very well for you and the pace of your course work and whatever it is that you're doing on the platform is not too is not too fast or it sees that the progress made is you know not really satisfying. Then it can suggest for you a different pace or also a different a rescaling strategy so we have used that critic just as a tutor and assessor sort of of your work in a way. But it's the same concept as the critic is supposed to give you feedback about how how you you've been doing so far and. If that really works for you and there's a dialogue with you it's not something that is supposed to you know dominate the discussion and give you the best answer or what to do but actually it's supposed to enter a conversation with you about whether that rescaling strategy is actually working for you and if the materials provided are also working for you.
So I look at this like we've covered a lot of ground horizontally as to all that campus AI does all that generative AI is enabling campus AI and in the whole world quite honestly to grow and do different things. In regard to education itself it's already changing it I have one example I probably won't mention the company's name but trade down the New York Stock Exchange it's a traditional educational company market cap was $600 million range and over the last I don't know exactly when it's say the last year since chat chat GPT brought brought AI to the masses. It's it's value is down 95% and education changed overnight for a lot of private companies is apply education less so for most universities in college although I believe it's changing but not a bat pace. So with that in mind let's and we're going to wrap up this this part of the podcast with this last question but with that in mind if we look at campus AI let's just say three years from now not that long and traditional world but a long time in.
In AI generation if we look at campus AI in three years who's primarily using it is it institutions is it individuals is it different businesses is it is it an education destination for those that would have typically gone to college possibly or assisting high schoolers like how would you describe I know a campus AI is capable of everything I just mentioned but let's just look at your company and what you think is going to be. What you think it's going to be doing in three years where do you think it falls most into. Well we certainly are building B2B already now and we see that this is already attracting a lot of attention so there are many institutions that need rapid reskilling and unfortunately probably sending all of their employees you know to back to college or to university is not a strategy that they will likely choose. And also many people need a lot of flexibility so their own time and pace of learning but also you know sort of here there are many massive open online courses but some of them are as I said designed in such a way that they don't really motivate you to finish right so I think in that way B2B is a very interesting strategy for us and this is something we would like to explore.
Not only as providers of content or courses for the employees of a given organization but also as a playground for them to build things right so that they can use our frameworks our code our technology our avatars our own language models right everything that we have our whole technology stack to actually experiment and explore and perhaps to create some spin-offs inter organizational spin-offs right that are. Actually doing something good or interesting for the organization so we want to be a hub for those businesses and a playground for them to explore new things with artificial intelligence prototype with AI so that's one thing but the other is I don't think the the ambition would be to you know replace education as we know it although I do agree with you being a researcher myself you are very right you know traditional education is very much challenged by artificial intelligence. In a negative way but also in a very positive way so for me you know I have a daughter I think her education to a large extent is very theoretical particularly the one that she obtains here in Europe and in Poland for specifically and I think chat GPT really challenges that concept of theoretical education and just tells you hey this is not going to work this is just fiction you have to teach these kids and the very fine knowledge in a way that's not going to work.
It's going to be meaningful right because otherwise they can simply go back home and generate their essays or whatever homework you assigned to them but on the other hand you have so many opportunities for the educators they can personalize the teaching the example that you gave of a manager who is actually you know figuring out what to say next with artificial intelligence the same could happen to a teacher that can now present the same task in multiple different ways to multiple different students with different students. So I think there is a very good possibility a very interesting possibility of using artificial intelligence exactly for that purpose. So coming back to the question that you asked I don't think we want to replace education we would gladly partner and we're already doing that with Cospenski and probably with a couple of other partners partner with the big institution that we can help in their transformation in their transformation towards those new modalities of learning AI assisted learning you can call it. So that's interesting for us, but I think at our core we are very much B2C and we would like to see our community grow not also not only in in the sense that we would like to have the bigger community but also the community that we already have to actually grow together with us and build more interesting things using our platform right and enhance their own competences through our platform.
So I think there are at least two strategies that we are currently pursuing one is B2B playground for organizations the other one is our B2C with as I said bottom up community that's growing in terms of numbers but also in terms of skills and talents. That's great and when you when you get focused on the education is just a personal belief of mine I think we need more teaching on how to how to think. As opposed to what to think what I'm really referring to is the answer like the answer students learning the answer is less important and students learning how to go through a process of finding a right answer so you know great without we're going to go from now into AI wants to know these are 10 quick questions and they're designed to get to know you a little better getting away from the business side maybe over to the personal side. So they're meant to have very quick answers so we can move through it quickly but you should find it interesting ready for this yes.
All right what's the first thing you ever remember being proud of. I was proud that I learned how to swim. That's a big one that's a good one. Yeah but it took me a long time you know I mean and I I I turned eight and most of my friends already mastered it and I did not and then I just all of a sudden learned I don't know how but just very quickly. So that may be proud. All right well number two what do you need help with that you wish you did not. I need help with writing I am very good I think at speaking at least that's what I think of myself but in terms of writing that is not so good so I'm actually very happy that AI agents are here to help because you know this is a game changer for me. All right well what do others often look to you for help with. I think I really love my job and I'm very passionate about artificial intelligence for many years now and I have not been bored bored with it so
I would say that probably my students what they ask me very often about is where do I get this drive from you know and how am I so passionate about it and then we just have a conversation where very often they discovered that they are just as passionate passionate as I am but I just did not know it about themselves. Okay all right number four what do you treasure most about your human abilities. Oh I think I think I really am good quite good I hope with friendships so I would say that I can take time off to spend quality time with with my friends with the close ones and this is something I cherish and I wouldn't like to forget how important that is for me ever. All right and throughout your whole life what's the most consistent thing about you. Oh AI for sure I mean 12 to 15 years of you know and vivid interest and pure passion I think that that that is I'm consistent that way I'm also very consistent with the fact that I'm always moving and I am a digital nomad that is also quite consistent about me but that's all about change so I would say AI is probably number one.
It's kind of funny you might give the same answer for the next question throughout your whole life what has changed the most. Oh locations probably locations locations have been changing I can I think build a home anywhere I'm planted so that's hopefully a good skill. And what is it that you find strangest about reality. I can respond in a way that will resemble Elon Musk's you know concepts that he orders every now and then but I will say I have this projection or I have this suspicion that it is a simulation. And this suspicion grows in me every year so yeah I will say I have this suspicion that it's a simulation it's a great simulation and I'm having a great time but every now and then I just feel hey this is not this is a matrix.
So you know that feeling we get sometimes in life where you feel totally and completely alive it usually just comes on you so when do you most recently remember having that feeling very recently. We together with friends we went for I guess the Japanese notion for that is forest bathing right so you take a deep dive into a forest and you roam freely in a beautiful alt forest and then you smell it and you you know you breathe in breathe out and so that has happened to me five days ago and I really enjoyed it. And can I ask where that was that was actually in Poland that was in Mazur and Mazur or Mazuria as as you can also I guess maybe you know say it in English is a region full of lakes post glacial lakes here in Poland there are 1,600 lakes in a very small area so and they're also beautiful old forest surrounding those lakes so it's a pretty majestic place and I always like to come back there.
And this forest bathing is something I would recommend to anyone there are beautiful forests also in the US so many of them I remember forest bathing also in Massachusetts so that can be done anywhere. The more time we spend in front of a computer the more we need to get out in nature what what is your most unique trait. Very energetic I think I'm very energetic the high energized every day I wake up and I'm ready to do things although that is something that I think is is very different from the majority of Polish population because people here are not as energetic that's not a typical trait. People tend to reason about things and take things slow however in the US it feels like many people are very energetic so i'm not sure if that's so unique over there but it is unique here when I'm here on discount and it feels unique. A good friend of mine is is from Poland and he probably has more energy than anybody know on the planet.
Oh really okay so maybe that's why he's here in the US I don't know yeah yeah. He is living in the US so that can be living in the US it's been here a number of years but but I still have to listen close to his accent. If you weren't human what would you be. Ha great question I wanted to say a robot but then I hesitate it and I feel maybe a cat is a better answer interesting alright yeah at least more mysterious you know more mysterious like a black box cats are the true black boxes isn't that true yeah you are exactly right. Let's thank you for all those by the way I think we did get to know you better and I am really enjoyed it let's talk about AI leaders and influences of yours and also resource list combined so what we're looking for here for our listeners is you know you've obviously been immersed in the space for quite a long time who is it that you follow what resources can you suggest how do you help our listeners on their educational process in the space.
Well I will say that I really love heart for probably I'm not the only one that mentions it but I really thoroughly love this podcast about generative AI I think it's it's really well done and in many ways it's it's it's it's it's kind of hilarious right so it's funny and there's so much burden and there's so much. Gravity in artificial intelligence you know many dooms are protecting that thing so I actually like how how hard fork really tackles AI in a in a in a smooth fun and and light way so that's that's that's a that's a resource that I I really recommend apart from that I think max tag mark from MIT is a very inspirational figure so I'm following him on our website. He's on Twitter and he has worked so much on explainability of artificial intelligence he does express doubts about the future of AI but I think it's done in a very reasonable way and it's not meaning to scare you and it's not meaning to actually somehow yeah bring negative emotions around artificial intelligence but really rather dig deeper into what is it that we can solve that we haven't done.
So far and what's relevant for us in terms of understanding artificial intelligence and our future together with it so I would say that I really am inspired by by by what he says and you know whatever he publishes and writes and there are many other figures I am trying to follow consistently what MIT media lab is doing in terms of. Various AI projects that they are embarking on so that's I think they have a great website a lot of their knowledge is open source so that's I think in many ways very valuable and more recently since I joined Harvard the labor and work life program at Harvard I will say that I'm also very interested in you know workers and AI sort of you know thinking about artificial intelligence not as a resource for the organizational as a whole. But something that can for instance support the well being of workers so I'm very much interested in everything that's done you know in terms of looking at AI as a positive force for people who who work and and you know something that could perhaps make their work a slightly more satisfying and better not something that actually you know threatens their work so yeah that I think the website of Center for Labor has been a very important thing for us.
I think that's a great thing for us to do is to support and just economy at Harvard with all the reports that are publishing on that is really quite fascinating. I think that's some great direction for a listener so I love all that how about any AI tips so any. Any AI products they can be using right now to start start giving more involved and get to learn it more et cetera campus AI has to be a top of the list. Of course, the campus AI is at the top of the list so I'm inviting you to try it out and I truly believe in this product I think we we the team has done an awesome job. Apart from that I don't know about you guys but I am using perplexity more and more often and I have thoroughly enjoyed it so to all of you who have not tried it and are really unhappy about you know search itself today and feel that search can be changed and it can be done well with the use of artificial intelligence perplexity may be the answer and I will say also that you know building agents within perplexity has been a fun task for me recently so.
Try it out. I think that's a great one and I have the app and I do use it myself so it's great it's very user friendly too you don't have to be a genius to get in there and start playing with so I think that's really good but it's also very explainable in the sense that it provides you the resources that it has used to give you that definition or whatever concept you were looking for so to me that is also kind of an ethical approach to artificial intelligence and I've valued that.
