很久很久以前，佛祖在舍卫国祇树给孤独园说法，当时城中有位愚痴的人，名叫恶奴，他好逸恶劳，偷鸡摸狗，靠抢夺别人的财物来养活自己。当时有位比丘在坟地里坐禅修行。
每到吃饭时间，这位比丘就身着袈裟、手持饭钵，进入舍卫城乞食。有位长者看见这位比丘威仪庄严，安详肃穆，升起了信奉和恭敬之心，就拿出一张细棉布，供养比丘。比丘接受之后便回到了坟地，正好遇到那个恶奴，恶奴见到细棉布就起了贪心，向比丘索要，比丘随即给了他。
