Happy opening day
And welcome in
Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show
Live on the WKYC app
Akron Jackson
Earl the Pearl
Left I Lloyd
I can't see out of my right eye
Jason left I Lloyd
Jason was his first day wearing contacts
I mean you would never know that I've been wearing them for about 35 years now
I got the car
I can't think I'm having a stroke
I can't see out of my right
Like what is going on
You think you know the way
Yeah right
And again here I'm looking at my phone
I'm like I don't think I have a contact
To sure enough like I take a picture of my eyes
I blow it up
Yep there's nothing in there
I don't have my contact
And that's my good eye
So he thought he was friends
He said it's the big one
I'm coming home
Left I JLo today
Left I JLo
Just go around like
Papa I'll go around like this one
Just don't burn the house though
Good morning boys
How are you?
I'm great man
I'm better now
I never threw on a fit yesterday
I was throwing a fiddle
So we're gonna talk about it
Yeah I didn't like it
Do you want me to tell you why you're wrong now or later
You can tell me why later
All right I'll tell you
Save it for later
Cause I was like I'm doing all poor
All poor
Earl's acting like a fan again
Like I thought we beat the fan out of you
And then yesterday he showed
I was just so frustrated
It's just so frustrated
Yesterday showed you're still a fan
Yeah
And it's not the room with that
No no I found the ball is though
I feel like I've been doing this five years
You've been around me for so many years
You even told me like
I've seen the metamorphosis
I found a balance
There's a you know
I read the 48 laws of power
And then kind of changed
How I
Take a professional approach to things
So a certain degree
So it's worked
All right
Until it don't
Yeah
Well it is weird
In people who don't
People who are on the outside
All the time
Don't understand it
But like when you cover
Most of the same team
Or cover this ritual
Like the fan does get beat out of you
Oh yeah
So when it does come back
It's a cool feeling
Right like this calves team to me
I don't I talk about them here
Right but I don't know the guys
Like they seem likeable through the TV
Yeah
The kids like them
Right
They're easy to root for
Like Don and Mitchell
Seems like a legit dude
And when he gets out
It's great
These
So that that part's fun
But then
The other times when people are like
What do you
You don't see it this way
I'm like
No I'm just calling it like
I see it
Right
I'm totally out of it
And that doesn't mean
That you don't
Kind of root for some people
Or you don't think
I have found myself rooting for people
Over 25 years now of doing this
Is like
That's a good dude
I hope good things happen to him
Right
I'm not going to lose sleep over
Get upset if they don't win
But like
You see you come across good people
You want good things to happen for him
And the opposite can be true as well
100%
25 years
How many years for you
25, 26 years
Yeah
All right so for me
I've been doing this five years
And I took a very
Untraditional route here
A lot of my time was spent as a fan
Reading your work
Reading your work
Listening to people that are now my colleagues
And so
You know I feel like
I'm still young and it's
I'm still fresh and it's
So the fan hasn't really been beat
Out of me yet
I don't know what it's going to look like
When I'm 20 years from now
Still doing this
It's so
Stick around
There's that C saw there
Because sometimes
You know I can report the information
I'm just telling you what it is
Or how I see it
Some people won't like it
But I still have that emotion in me
At times when it comes to the teams
That I grew up rooting for
And loving
And I hope part of that
Like is
It never goes away
Because if you cover a losing team
For so long
You can become stale to it
No matter who you start to look like this
You start to look like this
So
Is that actually 27
Yeah that's why it's
I just I just try to find a balance
But you know I try to also be my authentic self
And sometimes I just feel like
You know because of my own approach
Certain things trigger me
More often than other things
Well I think the main thing is
You have to have your own approach
Your own look at it
Whether it will
Whether you're a fan
Or whether you're
An objective media person
Or whatever your way is
Like for me
I've said this to people
And I've kind of said it to myself
Like if I'm still not getting excited
About Sunday
Or about going in
Then it is time to do something else
But the rest of it
It's your job
And like you're going to provide
Your analysis
You're going to make that phone call
And try to find out that extra detail
You know
And you're going to look at it in a certain way
That can't be affected by
Who's a good dude and who's not
Yeah
Right? Like if you're chasing facts
Or chasing a big story
Or you know
Giving your opinion
Like you can't be jaded by
This person was wrong before
Or this person was wrong to me before
Or whatever it was
Right?
Like
Each game each year is a blank slate
You know
The team I cover primarily
Each year starts to feel the same
This is the reality
Round October
Right?
Like well okay
What's going on lately?
Well a lot of contract adjustments
Right?
They fired the coach
Right?
What's he got to work with
Same crap in most cases
Right?
Like
I look at what this front office does
And it's like do not confuse
Activity for achievement
I'm going to tell you
The fact came back alive
Because this is the first coaching change
Of my career
Oh yeah
Yeah so it's like okay
For the last two years
I was so frustrated
Watching this team
It was like same old same old
I'm going to come out here
I'm going to do my takes
Be a good stewardess
And then with a soul with
It's over with
And now we have
You know
A new unknown
And as a lifelong Browns fan
That's exciting
Because you just live on that unknown
Hoping that this is the year
That we're good
And this is the year
That we finally have sustained success
So
The Browns are built on
Hope
Yes
And dreams
Yes
And very little
In reality based production
Hopes in dream
In void years
In void years
That's the way they're built on
I wonder when we
Restore our contracts here
At Tegna and KYC
Can we
And void years to our contract, Earl
I would love to have money
Kick down the line
And just get
I need a no-trade call
20 to 31
20 to 32
But you're not getting money down the line
It's just when it shows up
On the company's book
That's what I want
You get money up front
That's what I'm saying
I want to be in the company's books
When I already have the cash in hand
So we'll deal with that
But we just spent
Six minutes
Talking about the Browns
On Guardian's opening day
The one franchise
In this city that gives us
Eternal hope despite the fact
That they do not spend
A single dollar
In things that matter
Guys
It is finally here
The offseason is over
A 10-10 first pitch tonight
Against the Seattle Mariners
You mentioned the joy of doing this job Jason
You're the one that covers the Guardians more than
Earl and Zach on a day-to-day basis
Do you still get
Butterflies and Goosebumps about opening
That is it still have the same excitement
It once did for you back in the day
Not because of the Guardians
Just because of what it represents
That spring is here
Hopefully we don't have to use the snowblower
Five more times
And that was a joke
And
I'll take you over five
I'll take you over two
I'll definitely take you over
But like good things are like
Summer's almost here
Like you can see it coming
And so that gets me excited
And all that goes on with it
With sport youth sports
And with just life in general
Everything opens back up
In the summertime in Cleveland
It's great
Do I get excited about
The Guardians specifically
Not necessarily
Just because
You know I would consider them a long shot to win the World Series
If I thought that they were a legitimate top three contender to win the World Series
I think people in Detroit are really excited about today
Because I think Detroit thinks they got a legitimate chance to win the World Series
With their starting rotation with that lineup that they have
But you know this is a high-functioning franchise that always operates well
Usually makes more right decisions than wrong
And it's a fun time at the ballpark
So I don't know
You were probably hoping for a more happy joyous answer for me
But you should know
No I knew who I asked
And I want to ask Earl next
Because he is a baseball guy through and through
He grew up playing baseball
Of all the teams I think Earl still has
As much fandom for the Cleveland baseball team
He has for any other teams that haven't caused him as much pain as the Browns have
So Earl do you still get
The butterflies and the goose bumps
When you know the Guardians are playing
Real legitimate baseball game one of one 62
One thousand percent
Absolutely I do man
I am a fan at heart
I'm a Cleveland there at heart
And I grew up in the 90s
So I grew up in an area to where the Indians were always good
We're not goody
Tickets
Like into that
You know for me
This is when my mother let me stay up in 95 to watch the World Series
She let me stay up again in the 97th World Series
Then I got a weapon for crying like I lost something
When we lost
She let me know you're not out there
They ain't paying no bills
So but yeah I do
Even though I'm not a diehard baseball fan
I love my home team
And I still love the sport of baseball
And it's something about baseball that gets an element of anxiousness
That you really don't get from the other sports to where
You really live and die on each pitch
It's that's especially if it's a close game or
Situations to where you can't even turn your head
And take a sip of your drink or you might miss something that might be a monumental moment
And for me I have learned at least in this early steven
Boer to never count this baseball team
And I learned that last year when they were far behind
And I'm looking at steven boat
And he's still saying all these things
To where I view is crazy to the media
About how he still believe
Well that message was infectious
And they ended up making a run
They got us excited in the city of Cleveland
Didn't end the way that we all wanted to end
But the one that this franchise don't spend money
But somehow some way
They found a way to get it out the mud
Every single year
It always gets me excited
Because I know it's going to be this up and down
Rollercoaster ride of emotions
Through the summer I'm going to attend some games
And we're going to have some fun
We're going to get frustrated
And hopefully when we get to September
We're talking about another playoffs when
Before you go, Zach, I should sit like
Much like you baseball was the sport I grew up on
I was a massive Indians fan
As a kid before my heart turned black
And my soul left my body
In 97 I was still
I was in college as a Kent for the World Series
And I was still stringing for a paper in Lorraine
The Morning Journal
So they sent me to all the home playoffs games
I don't think I went to one class the entire month of October
And I didn't have a great reason for it
I didn't feel like going to class
Because I was covering home games
I wasn't going on the road
But just all the home playoffs games I was there
And I remember they lost the
Seer obviously on the road in game seven
And I was laying on my parents' couch
My parents house watching the game
And I remember thinking
Man, I got to go to class next week
And needless to say
I think my GPA that first semester
That fall semester at Kent was like a 1.7
Because I just never went to class
I was in a whole month of October
Fifth grade and I just remember being at the bus
I was my first
You were in fifth grade
And I was a junior in college
I was in fifth grade
Oh
Shut up
Nobody asked you
And screaming from the back I wasn't bored yet
I was in fifth grade and I just remember crying like a baby
Like crying like a baby
I just just never being so devastated
And those was the only those moments
To where my mother let me stay up late
Yeah
On the school night
And I just felt like
You know listening to my dad and my uncles
Man, the Marlins came best with us
This gonna be the year we get it done
And it's just like we didn't get it done
They supposed to game in numbers
There's nothing wrong with a 1.7
Right
Right
You had an Fedsity R.A.
You had an excuse for it
And the sad part is
I was like on the Dean's list of my friends
Of being on my friends
I had the highest GPA of everybody
Yeah, so I will say this
As you guys know I want a lot of things
And a lot of people off my lawn
And I want opening day being at 10-10 pm local time
All the way off my lawn
Yes, I want it to be opening day
I want baseball at 1 pm
No game should be allowed
On the West Coast to start past 4 pm
That's facts
Right, none
That is facts
None
And that's before
That's nostalgic
But that's before you get to even the discussion
About like 162 is a lot
Yeah
So baseball only has certain windows where it's really gonna grab you
So why wouldn't opening day be one of those
Right, like I understand Pawskines is on a 115 today
Right, but like opening day is what people relate to
Baseball Day
Yes, it's not opening night
It's opening day
I agree
NBA has opening night
Yeah
NFL has opening night
They've now stretched into a 3-week adventure
Yeah, they do
Right
But opening day is baseball
That said
There is magic in baseball to me
Right, it did
It's your childhood memories
For me it's my grandmother who never missed a game
Even when she came to our game
She had this little silver ring
She always had it
She knew every player
She cost them all
Right, she lived through it all
Years and years and years of bad baseball
And then in 2016 they got really close
She was still alive
You know, that's who I wanted it for
But I agree, Earl
You relate it to
Where were you on TV
What, who was with you when you went to that game
Great
And even though there was a lot of bad teams
You remember standing out in left field
Who was playing that day
Right, you remember if they were down 8-2
And came back in one
And for me
The kids now like
One especially who's a big baseball fan
That's been brought back
And we're rooting for Travis Pazana
Because a couple of years ago
We got the opportunity to go down to the Superregionals
NCAA and Kentucky
They played, it was Travis Pazana's last college game
Three weeks later he got drafted by the Guardians
So we'll root for him because we saw him play
You know, up close
Yeah, I'm excited
I think you mentioned it
Culturally
This organization does things right
We're gonna, you know, they have their way
People don't love it
It hasn't resulted in the big trophy
They have their way
So we're expecting competitiveness
We're expecting results
Eventually we'll see if they can hit the baseball
And how the summer goes
162 is a long time
That brings us right to the next part of this topic
And we're gonna cover the Guardians
All day we got two topics coming up
Later in the show on the Guardians
Exactly
Joining us at 11-30 from Seattle
Who's out there covering the game
But Jason, when you look at
This Guardians team
Last week he said if everything went right
Could they win a World Series
So in your mind
We know everything's not going to go right
Because that never happens in sports
What is the successful season this year for the Guardians
What does success look like for this team
Coming off back-to-back A.O. Central Championships
I mean Steve votes as when the World Series
I love that
Like I love that your manager doesn't run from that
It doesn't matter what the payroll is
It doesn't matter who you have
Or who's missing like this is the goal
And this is the task at hand
I think realistically
What's the successful season
Reach the postseason
If you advance to the A.O.C.S
Surely I don't know how you can look at that
Is a not successful season
Particularly when you look at the age of this roster
You know I was going to say
I was going to throw out 90 wins
Because it always
It seems like this team always wins 90 games
I saw a graphic yesterday
About like
10 years
Yeah
Somehow when I saw that too
That was very fun
Right
You pull that up if you can find it
I don't know how
I had A.O.E. set the top
Did it had two other teams
And did a Guardian
Somehow when I win 90 games
Like if you ask any random baseball fan
Not like the bowl in the me
And the jays of the world that play fancy baseball
And live and breathe this stuff
But like
Go ask a fan in St. Louis
Name three players on the Cleveland Guardians
Not named Jose Ramirez
Could they do it?
Probably not
But yet somehow you look up in the playoffs
Every year or not every year
But most years
They're right there
So you know
Make the playoffs
Advance the A.O.C.S
Surely to me that's a successful season
Obviously you want to win the whole thing
I don't
Again they would not be in my top three or five teams
Mike your question if everything breaks perfectly for them
Could they win it
Yeah there it is
There it is
If everything breaks perfectly for them
Could they win the World Series
Yeah I sure
I would go along and play ball with that
But you know as you said
How often does that happen in life
So they would not be one of my favorites to win it
But I still I love baseball
I love the sport
I love the game
Looking forward to a good season
Yeah same here
I think you frame it perfectly
Make the playoffs
You know I was going to say at first
Just win a division
But I think the Detroit Tigers is a series
And they confident in a baseball team this year
If the Guardian somehow some way find a way to make the postseason
At that point all bets are off and anything can happen
You know that's a realistic answer
We all want this to end in the World Series
Mike I hate to put you on a spot here
But if you can find today's opening day lineup
I think why just the postseason is realistic
Because even if you look at this lineup
Jason told me I think last week
That he looked at this one through nine
And it looks like a MLB one through nine
Even with that said
Jose Ramirez is still the only proven thing
That's consistently in that lineup
And so you know it's going to be a lot of projection
A lot of different conversations all season long
And if some of these guys panicked so if out
And they are hot at the right time
Anything can happen
But like a successful season for this team
Is making the playoffs for the third consecutive year
Why don't you sign out yet just to heads up
Yeah it's because it's a seven o'clock game
And we'll be able to do that for you
It's can they hit right
Last year they did make the postseason
But they were tied for last
And the entire league in batting average
They were 28th and runs scored
Not even average in four games
That's not supposed to happen
So yeah we do feel like
Confidently
Just supposed to make it
Right what is this organization built on
Pitching development
Pitching identification
You know being good enough to weather the long storms
And the times you don't score runs
But they got a score run
So we're looking at young guys
To come in and provide a boost
And starting tonight
You don't we'll see how that goes
Tanner Bobby against Logan Gilbert
Tonight in the opener right
Obviously Bobby
We talked about it before
He was supposed to get the start
Last year food poisoning knocked him down
So hopefully he had cereal yesterday
For dinner
Maybe some nice salad
Yeah
And listen
Mariners have one of the best rotations
In baseball certainly in the American League
They're pitching factory much like Cleveland
They know how to draft and develop young starters
And Logan Gilbert is at the top of that list
They do have some injuries
Bryce Miller is out with an oblique
So they're not 100% for the series
But it should be a great pitching matchup
It should be a great series
And we talked about before
This is a heck of a start to the season for Cleveland
They get to go to LA from here
So you're running into the fire right out of the gate
The Mariners right
They had the strife with the World Baseball Classic
Where the guys were going at each other
Cal Raleigh and Arosa Reyna
Yeah
I had no problem with it
With the with the fact that Raleigh
Like when Kobe ran through Paul Gasol
And took the soul from his body
Everybody thought that was great
But people are gonna get up in arms
Because Cal won't bump
Bump fist with Arosa Reyna
Come on man
I think Bobby should go high and inside on somebody
See if they
If they clear
If the Mariners are gonna fight the Guardian or each other
See if they go
I'm looking forward to seeing Tanner
Bobby Pitch
You know last year was just a rough year from him
Literally from the night before
On and
I thought about this
You know I've been watching the last dance
Documentary back right
And I don't know how much time Carl Willis has left
But if I'm Carl Willis man
I'm getting my rotation together
And I'm labeling this the last dance
And if I'm Tanner if I'm Gavin
If I'm Parker if I'm the rest of those guys
Let's make it one of these years man
The possibility to sing Carl Willis out
With a positive salute
So that would be that would be awesome
Are we taking a break when we come back
Cams were home last night against the heat
Not a great performance in a loss
We're gonna talk about it
We come back in two minutes on the ultimate clean sports show
Welcome back the ultimate cleven sports show
Cams fall to the heat last night
Was it 121-03
Correct Michael you were there
Michael thoughts
Hey Michael's a wild
Michael is saying
Hey
Hey
Where are you going to play
Flag all the play
Listen
What
My dad and brother in town
I don't even know if they call me Michael
Like that's
What do they call you just Mike
Mike yeah
Does anybody call you Mike he besides us
My mom every once in a while
No, once in a while
But that's it
But the calves last night the
So Kenny called them out
After the win on Tuesday
For their lack of defensive intensity
So they had to play defense
Better moving forward
Unless they're gonna have a short stint
We talked about that
On the show yesterday
And then last night
They still
Give 124
Miami team that
Isn't good offensive team
But it's not a juggernaut
After the game Kenny Ackinson
Ended on a Mitchell both double down saying
They like the process
They didn't like the results
But they liked the defensive process
That led them there
And the whole idea was Jason
We're gonna collapse on BAM out of bio
And force the other guys to beat them
And if you roll this clip here
Our guy Jackson Flickinger
Over at Fear the Sword pulled this together
You can see numerous examples
Of over helping where they end up getting burned
I understand the philosophy
The idea
As Jason covers one eye
To literally look at the screen
Because he does not have a second contact
I understand the premise
Of wanting to get the ball out of BAM's hands
Just two weeks after he scored 83 points
Let guys like Davey on Mitchell
And Kaleh Ware
And Jaime Hock is Jr
And those guys beat you
But at some point
I feel like you have to make an adjustment
When the other guys start off the game
Is hot from beyond the arc as they did
And the calves didn't do that in this one
Yeah
Plus you can't kill him two nights in a row
Like if you're gonna come out and set him on fire
Is Kenny did
After the Orlando game
It's hard to come back and burn him again the second time
So I understand why he backed off a little bit
But uh
You know listen
With some of these guys
I hear what you're saying
But also like you come with with the philosophy
And who do you want to beat you BAM
Or some of these other guys
If they're making shots at night
Well that's the NBA
You're gonna live and die with the other guys making shots
So
If you start
Changing what you came in
Intending to do
And now you're covering the wings
And now you're letting BAM go
I just I don't know like
I don't get hung up on one game
Like we come in here and we dissect this game
And we talk about this game
And I get it like it's a daily show
It's what we're gonna do
But I would tend to look at things
More in 10 and 20 game blocks of like
Would you accomplish
Are you turning the right direction
Rather than focus on every specific
Single aspect of every game
Who's out of position in that clip
Tyree's proctor
Well I can't see
Right
Well we'll tell you
I saw figures
Confirming around on the court
Right
This is proctor
Yeah
There's a couple plays where it was done of in
When the one the calves have their guys
Tyree's proctor
Well proctor is not gonna be playing
Yeah that's that's what I'm saying
Look look
Miami had just gotten embarrassed
On national TV on Monday night
They needed this
They've been reeling
They need to escape
The calves were
You know got drugged to the finish
By Orlando
You can make excuses and they are
I'm not judging this team for four more weeks
Right
Till they have everybody
And if they don't have everybody
If they don't get their stops
If Tyree's proctor has to play
In late April and early made
Whew
It's gonna be very trouble
Right
But like
Last night was set up as a loss
And they didn't get off the bus
They didn't play till the third quarter
They got beat
Yeah you know
I told somebody yesterday
Morning before the game
That
I was looking at this game
And said you know
This might be tough
To get a win
They coming off a
A slug out
With the Orlando Magic the night before
And regardless of where the heat are
And the stand is
That is still an air exposure coach team
And this is a basketball team
That every year their identity is different
I heard on the broadcast last night
They're like number one
And pace of play
And the Miami heat is never like in the top 15 or 20
And so they hit you with something different every year
Then you got to add on to the fact
That Dean Wade wrote this ankle
You know
And pregame
So I don't know if Kenny came into the game
That night with that game plan of collapse
Collapsing on BAM
Or if he had to make an adjustment
After Dean Wade got hurt before even tip off
But then even still
So when you look at this singular game
I will ask a hypothetical of
Okay
Why do you feel the need to collapse on BAM
If you have Evan Mobley
Right
BAM should be able to get his money off
On Evan Mobley 101
Like that
That's just like how I see it
I am with Michael on the point of
And I'll get you Jason
You can't just go around
Readjusting what you do
But in game adjustments is a real thing
And they was likeness up from
Behind the art
And they just kept doing it
And kept doing it
And it just didn't seem like the cast wanted to change
Their approach to their defensive philosophy
Last night
And so I ain't going to really
You know
Beat them over the head too bad
It's one game
At the end of the day
When we get late April early May
Will we even be talking about that heat game
No
So you want to see the bounce back from that
Right
It was a scheduled loss
And it was a slight performance
Yeah it was very flat
So you want to see him respond
Yeah
They'll get a day off
Both teams staying town obviously
And rematch on Friday
Yeah
More importantly than a defense last night
The offense
Was bad bad
And it was partially
Tired legs
Like they all talked about
Second night of the back to back
It was an 8 p.m. tip off
In the first leg
But they started the game
And were outscored by Miami
By 30 points from beyond the arc
In the first half
You know how hard it is to come back in the game
When you lose the three-point shooting battle
By 30 points and a half
They came back
They did tie it
Donovan and Sam went nuclear in the third quarter
They chipped 3-3s
In the quarter
As a team they hit 12-3s in the entire game
So they had half of their threes
Between those two players
In the third quarter
And then they just fizzled out down the stretch
I saw people
After the game complaining about this
About that
Saying Mobley
And then if you want to take Mobley's game stats
Now all of a sudden you give him some hype
And he disappears
What's funny is
Exactly how Cleveland wanted to guard BAM
And force him to kick out to other players
That's exactly what Miami did
Against Evan Mobley the difference was
The heat guys
Not named BAM out of bio
Hit a bunch of threes
You don't happen when Evan was passing out the open shooters
Brick City
Clank
Clank
And clank
So
Pick your pick what you want with these guys
Last night was not an Evan Mobley issue
Even though it took 8 shots
Miami's entire defensive strategy was
When he catches it
Work collapsing
Make him kick
And I didn't think he was late on a couple passes against the zone
But Miami's a scrapping team
Sposters the hell of a coach
And overall
It's a one-off loss
And they're
Fifth they're 14 to five with James Harden
Yeah, this is the team that
We did a topping a few weeks back
Could they get to the two seed
And I said yes I thought that they would
Well, they're not going to
No
They're pretty well settled in
As the four seed now
I think Detroit's pretty comfortable as the one
I think that's going to be
Obviously the second round matchup more than likely
At this point is calves and pistons
Against old friend JB Beckerstaff
The nicks and Celtics can kill each other in the second round
And made the best team win
And see in the conference finals
Yeah, you know, like a couple things on which you said
Back to last night
I thought that third quarter was really fun
Really exciting
And I thought the Cavaliers did an amazing job
Of getting themselves back into that game
I always tell people man
Donovan Mitchell was a straight-up dog
Like there was a sequence to where
The ball moving was phenomenal
But nobody wanted to shoot the ball
And he was just like you know what
Give it here
I'll shoot the damn basketball
And so like just to see him come down
Hit those consecutive shots in the row
To get the momentum going
To get the crowd back into it
And then you close the game
You close the third quarter tie to 83
I immediately said okay
New ball game
One quarter game
Who's going to out coach who
Who's going to outstrap who
And we'll see how this end up
We took the L
Get the night off
Come back, handle our business on fire
Gear it out, potentially back
Friday
Hope so
I mean look
This team's healthy and specifically
Donovan Mitchell who you just talked about
Feel good about it
When it counts
So you need to get Gear it out
And back no doubt
Thanks
And stay everyone
Keep everyone in bubble wrap
Until for another about what
Two weeks
And I know some people hate this discussion
And I get it
Because you still got a win in one of matters
But isn't the four seed exactly where they want to be
Yes
How the season's gone
Yes
Right
So it's exactly where you want to be
You're headed there
Right, you still got three
Ish weeks to to work on things
To get Jared out on back
Figure out
You know what's going on with these other guys
And just be healthy
And be ready
When it counts
As that four seed
It's the best path
For where you want to go
Who's five Toronto
Atlanta right now
Because they've won an crazy number
Atlanta's a good team
I've told you guys for a year
You have
You have
I like Atlanta
The funny thing about it is
I remember Jason telling me about two years ago
He said about two years
And him and my
This team is young
They athletic
They can shoot
They can run
And two years
This is going to be a team
That a lot of the NBA is going to have to reckon with
And here we are now
And they just seem like they keep getting better
How many of they want in a row
Mike
It's a crazy number
Right
Almost double digits
I believe they lost one
And then now they're back to the winning ways
It's like 14 to 15
They're nine and one of their last 10
And 14 to last 15
Yeah
So they are taking care of these
They're on well at the right time
One last point on the defense
The Cavs last night
Or without Jared Allen
Dean Wade who rolled his ankle on a ballboy in warm-ups
Which is an issue
Max Drew's and Jalen Tyson
Who are some of their best defensive players
So you missed those four
And it's going to make a difference
On Saturday
The Cleveland Charge are back at home for their
Regular season home finale
They have clinched a playoff spot
Which means they will get
A home playoff game
And on Saturday
If you want to head out there
And see him take on the Staten Island Nets
It is also Naquan Tomlin
Bobblehead night
This is the Bobblehead
The Charge sent us one
Naquan
The former charge player now
A full-time member of the Cleveland Cavaliers will be honored
Buy the charge before the game
Tip off at 7pm

When we come back
Zach Jackson was at Carnell Tates pro day yesterday
And he did not see Carnell Tate
Run a four to yard dash
That matter for his draft stock
And whether or not the Browns
We'll select them at six
We'll tell you
Two minutes
Welcome back to the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show
The NFL was in Columbus yesterday
Because half of the NFL players
Who will be drafted were in Columbus yesterday
That's a fact
Zach will not be drafted
I don't think
But he was also one of those in attendance
Your thoughts on Ohio State's pro day yesterday
And specifically Carnell Tate
My draft stock is taint
I would not pass the physical or the background check
So I'm safer in the press box
What's your 40 time
Oh
40 seconds
How fast can I drink a 40 and not run the 40
Right
I think we're all whole English
Yeah
Yeah it's always the most attended or one of the most attended
I would tell you one of my impressions is walking out
And there's John Harbott
We're in the Giants gear
It's like whoa that's a little different
That's new
Yeah the GM's come
I saw six or seven of them
Harbott
I think he's the only head coach that I saw
But people come
Right
And like the buckeyes have maybe four top 10 picks
So um
It was interesting
Only three guys ran the 40
Carnell Tate was not one of them
We know there was a little bit of controversy
His agent tried to clear this up
Yeah it doesn't matter
It doesn't matter
They have tracking
The tape says Carnell Tate's pretty fast
Right
Carnell Tate passes the medical check
All of that stuff
They've watched him for years
The 40 doesn't matter
He even he discussed it afterwards
He said
He thought about it
That was the competitor in him
He thought he was faster than that
He took advice he he cooled off
Like that doesn't matter
This guy has played at a high level
So before we dig in on
Players specifically
I'm just curious
I should probably open with this
Pull back the curtain a little bit
On what these pro days look like
I've covered a high estate
For a number of years back
When Trussell was there
I don't recall them letting us
In to see those
Yeah it's kind of a new phenomenon
Yes
So I've never seen a pro day
So like take us through
Do you have acts like
Are the NFL people separated from the media
Are you do you have access to them at any point
And like what does the day look like
So a high estate has this
monstrous field house
All the banners and bells and whistles
The program that's got unlimited funds
We go over in the corner
Yep
Right so
It's started
The pro day will generally start
Like mid-morning
Right around this time
The guys will lift
They will do their jumps
They will meet
Individually
This is what I'm going to do today
Whatever
And like a lot of pro days
There's 30 scouts there
There's 150 to 200
NFL representatives
That's the NFL
So then after about an hour
After everybody's measured on the bench press
They'll come out
Everybody will get loose
The kicking workout starts
You just see shuttle runs
You see 40 yard dashes
Not not fancy stuff
And then every
Each position has an individual group workout
So Caleb Downs did not run
The 40
But he did the defensive back workout
No knee brace
No anything
I think that
Whatever was out there is overblown
Yeah
So many styles didn't do anything at all
Because he blew up the combine
Yeah
I'll tell you what
I laughed
He came walking around the corner
He looks like my old scar
Really
He is
Like I was stunned
Now that is high praise
Because you and I are two of the few people
Who have seen Miles
stood next to him
And know what he actually looks like
445
Sunny styles
I thought this
This is my
Like I thought it was Miles' carrot standing behind me
Wow
One of those like
Straight out of the movie's double takes
Right
So yeah
So what goes on is
It's not sexy
It's not really made for TV
It moves over the courts
It's two and a half hours or so
To see Julian saying out there
And I think that's part of the reason
Some of these GMs come
Yeah
But you know he's making 30 throws
It's a scripted workout
It's not
Under any pressure
They're not playing for points or anything
He and Carnel have worked on some throws
Can I ask you a dumb question
If you're there
If it's the quarterback
Trying to throw for the receiver
Right
Is it a different workout
Than when it's for the quarterback
You see what I'm saying
Yeah
Is it the same
It's pretty much the same
It's a little shorter
When it's for the receivers
They don't have many
They had two tight ends
But I think only one of them was working
And they had two receivers
So they brought in a Youngstown State White receiver
Who's probably not going to get drafted
It's just kind of the add a guy
So they each run through 5 or 6 rounds
There's 40 throw is made
And they go
It starts with short stuff
They let them go deep at the end
Each guy gets 8 or 10 chances
Yeah
And they move on
You mentioned sunny styles
You mentioned Caleb Downs
You said one or the two tight ends
Worked out
Was it Max Claire
It was
Kazmeric
Okay
Max Claire was there
He might have been in part of the workout
He wasn't in any of the other stuff
And then sunny styles
Brother Lorenzo Stiles has an injured
He was in a sling
So I know he lit up the combine as well
But he's about 3 inches
To 5 inches shorter
And 40 pounds lighter
Than his brother
Who's just like a cartoon character
Like I honestly
It was like I couldn't believe
What I was seeing there
And this is a guy
And Arvel Reese is nearly as big and fascist
And I think people would talk about sunny styles
As the best linebacker in the country
Except that Arvel was so good
For most of the last year
He wasn't even the best linebacker on his own team
Yeah
Right, crazy
So these guys both could go in the top 5-ish
To 7-ish picks
And the Browns hope that they do
Because the Browns are looking for the best offensive player
Or the best option to trade out
It's funny because we're both of those guys
When you hear pro scouts talk about them long-term
That they're going to eventually be edge rushes
And it's just so wild to see
Like you know
Arvel Reese
Intercity Cleveland kid man
I knew his brother very biased
I don't care where he lands
That's going to be a dude that I cheer for
His entire career
I just want to see him do well
But it's always exciting as a buck
I fan to have all these dudes
With the potential to be top 10 picks
It'll probably be 6 or 7
Gone in the first round total
So it's exciting times
The only thing that frustrates
All of us sitting up here
All that talent and we ain't
With an astronaut hat
That's right
That's right
Zach, so you were there yesterday
And I know Carnell Tates
That he believes the 40 is overvalued
And he cited guys like J.S. Ed
And Pukinakura is two people who
Didn't destroy the 40 yard dash
Have gone on to have incredible NFL careers thus far
For someone in Tates position
Who is maybe wide receiver one
Maybe not
Depending on what teams value
A guy who could be a top 10 pick
Could be a top five pick
He ran a 453 at the company
Supposed he didn't try and up that
At a track that has historically been
Incredibly favorable
To players running the 40 yard dash in the past
Do you think him not running
Help or hurt his dash?
I don't think it affects it at all
Mike
I understand why it was a talking point
Because he is a deep wall specialist
And people thought that he would be a little bit faster
But the teams have the GPS tracking
They've scouted him
He doesn't have the lingering injury
He came back and played
There's nothing
I remember three years ago when J.S.
And ran his and there was a little bit of mystery
Because people didn't think that he was that fast
He had missed some time via injury
He did it once
His time was this time
Guess what
He's arguably the best receiver on the planet
The highest paid receiver in the NFL
Yeah, right
So it's different for different guys
I was at Toledo's pro day on Monday
There was a guy that ran
He ran 449
He wanted to run it again
Why?
He's fast
He wants to get noticed
He's a Toledo guy
That's what he has to do
Right?
Carnell Tate
There's years of tape
The production is there
Teams have known about him
He didn't need to run the 40
To up it by once
Either the Titans are going to love him
Or they're not
The Giants are going to love him
Or they know by now
Just go ahead
Yeah, I agree with Zach
And I agree with Carnell
The 40 is overrated
Depending on which your situation is
And who you are
If you will stand out on Ohio State
Why receiver who has produced
Year in and year out for that
For that college then
It's not something that is
Necessary
Not only that
We all know
When you get to the NFL level
It's not about how fast or straight
Long speed is
It's about you being a route running
Assess
And one of the fastest
Doos we've ever seen
Playful Ohio State
Was tagging junior
And it took him about
Eight years into his NFL career
To really get the route running part down
Pack
And you start seeing him
Have success in Carolina
A little bit of success in New Orleans
And so
Having that straight line fee
Is cool for talking points
But it doesn't really
Mean all of that
When you own a field in real time
And I don't think so
Do you guys know the history
Of the 40 why it's the 40
I don't know
It goes all the way back to Paul Brown
All right
And when he was coaching the
Players at the military school
The maritime school
Is that A&M wasn't it?
40
40
No Paul didn't coach there
That was Bear Bryant
40 yards is how long you run to cover a punt
So that's how they were timing guys
Guess what nobody's drafted in
Cardinal Tate to cover
To cover punch
Not at all
Now people are drafting
Cardinal Tate to catch 56 yard touchdowns
To run 40 yard sideline routes
But that's the history of it
And it's just been adopted as the 40 yard dash
The 10 yard splits for the lineman
Like Ted Ginn probably had outrageous 20 and 30 yard splits
Right but like it's
That the one number on
Cardinal Tate does not define
Who he was as a college player
Who he's going to be as an NFL player
The idea
I never
I think I used to dismiss
The difference in 44 and 45
Because it's you
It's the 10th of a second
And then
When I watch my son swim
I saw the difference
In a 10th of a second
But how important
Is one 10th of a second
Because when you hear it you think it's really not that big of a deal
And I know he said like he's
Better in other ways
And I agree
Like he'll be in the top 10
He deserves being the top 10
What is the significance
Though between a 4-4 and a 4-5
Nothing if you can't catch a ball
If you can't defend and catch it
And that Cardinal Tate is a finisher
He's a reach-over guy
Yeah
Right he's in the just his body
Deep ball
True outside guy
So it matters
Very little
It's one data point
I know Brown's fans are a little scarred
By the use of data point
But it really is
And that's part of the reason
Brown's aren't big on these
Like there's some guys they want to know
But they can tell from the film
How fast you are
It was funny you said that
One-tenth of a second
You know we're so at most that in sports
Track
And the swimming pool
Race track
Yep
NASCAR tracks
Like
That's where one-tenth of a second is a big deal
So
Yeah
What
I want to go back to
Because you
I'm not just saying this because we're friends
We work together and you're sitting six feet for a minute
You can pray
Kick my butt if you want to
You are one of the few that go to all these pro days
Why do you like attending so many pro days
And what's the benefit
Well I want to see these guys up close
The top guys especially are the freaks of freaks
Like I want to see what they look like
And I'm glad you asked because about 10 years ago
Ohio State had the pro day with Zeke Elliott
Joey Bosa
And all these guys
When they set the record or tied the record
I think for most first round
Was Tyvis Powell part of that pro day?
He probably was
I think 15 or 16
Well he demands to be included in that headline group
Yeah
Joey Bosa and Tyvis Powell
But I remember
Catching up with the scout that I knew
And I said
Watching them go through the bag drills and stuff
Same stuff you see at youth football practice
Or at high school football practice
And I said
You know when you've seen these guys
What's the value here?
And he said wait a minute
I'm going to show you
He said that's a good question
He said all these guys
Were the star players in their
Eyes to star in their college
He said watch this guy
Who ended up being a fourth round pit
Go through the bags
And he said
And watch Joey Bosa do it
Like this
That's what you see
Like the difference is
Like watch these E.C. Elliott turn the corner
Right here when his E.C. Elliott was 21 years old
Like people forget
How explosive he was
222 pounds with zero body fat
Like you see the best of the best
And why teams value and why a lot of GMs
And head coaches don't miss these
The top ones as they want to see
Now there's more than
Than just seeing that
It's how they interact
Like the workout should go well
They're on their home turf
They're around their coaches
Their teammates
Their families are there
They just want to see that
But you want to see these guys
Up close in that in that setting
Because you're really trying to add it
The draft the team
Of the biggest
Strongest fastest freaks
And that doesn't mean that everybody
That's the biggest strongest fastest
As the best football players
But when you're spending this kind of
Pick on them
You want to see them up close
And see what they really look like
So then
Have you seen Andrew Berry at any of these
No
They don't
They don't believe in it
They have they
They use the tracking
Most of the time it's a young scouts
Now yesterday both assistant GMs
From the Browns award there
And that's a that's a rarity for the Browns
Agents are there they're talking to them
Yeah
They're getting a look at Julian Sand
Which you're not going to get
You know
In a lot of other places
And you are you're just kind of seeing
These guys interact in in talk like that
If you don't want to fly to
USC for a pro day
I get it
It's two hours away
There
I why not
Well I would say this last year
And I thought it was strange
That they weren't on all the top quarterbacks
But then they went and
And worked these guys out individually
Yeah
So
A lot of these top guys don't really work out anyway
Like kill a downs
DB workout was 10 minutes
Yeah
Carnel Tate ran
Eight full speed routes
Yeah
So like the debate is
What are you really getting out of it
But I remember going back to
I mean how many GMs did you say were there
Like at least seven that I saw
You know
But hasn't this been Angela Berry's norm
Correct me
Oh it has
It has been the norm
The ones I've been to
I've never seen him a one
I'm not saying the GM has to be at every one
I'm not saying that
You have
One of the two to three most dominant football programs
In the country over the last
Let us affect
And they ride down the street
They're right down the street
And your owner has a plane
He loves to take everywhere
He can be there in 15 minutes
I don't need that
I just don't understand
I don't see the harm in having
I agree
It seems like
I don't want to make a big deal
But I don't want
Like don't clip this and make this
No
I'm not trying
I know what you're saying
Especially when
People from the Pittsburgh still
They show up there
I just don't understand
It's a philosophy thing
Like it was strange
To not see Mike Tom on there
Because he was there
Every single year
It was strange to not see
Vrable there
Because even when he was the head coach of the Titans
He would be jumping in front of the drills
And doing the defensive
Like running the defensive line drills
Like there was a young brown scout
Who was running the shuttle
Run
And he was out there explaining to the guys
This is where we time you
If you don't hit this cone
We're going to do
Well Mike Vrable used to be out there
himself as a head coach
So it's a philosophical thing
I don't
I agree
That it's strange
And I agree
People can say what are you doing here
Like John Harbaugh sees value
In meeting these guys up close
And watching them out close
And watching them
They didn't do that
Now go and cook in Catherine Hickman
We're there
Catherine Hickman was at the Toledo pro day
Timing somebody in the forward
Like
So they do feel some value in it
But he chooses not to go
Now are they busy
With other things
Yes
But it's a fair question to ask Jason
It really is
Why is it a manual
He did not run
At the top of the hour
When we
When YouTube joins
We're going to talk about
All this miles care at stuff
But you mentioned sunny styles
Looks like miles care
30 seconds
Because I don't want to
Turn any more than that
Is there any possible chance
That all of this is connected
They would take sunny styles
Of six and trade
I don't I don't think so
I think this team has to go offence
I think this team wants to trade down
And is rooting for these defensive guys
To be the great prospects
That they're heralded to be
So they get that opportunity
I would be stunned
If our values are sunny styles are killed
Downs as a Cleveland Brown
Because those guys play in the defensive side of the ball
All right
Taking a break we come back
We're going to wrap up the WKYC
Ports of the show
Before the YouTube body
And joins us to the 11th
Stay tuned
Be back in two minutes
On the alternate groups
Welcome back
The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show
It's opening day
Mikey
You know like Michael Mikey
Let's do it guys
We're going to play a little game
Of filling the blanks
For the Guardians
Upcoming 2026 season
Earl we're starting with you
The Guardians
Will win
How many games in 2026
Finishing
What place in the A.O. Central
And we'll
Blank in the playoffs
That last blank is your playoff prediction
Earl start us off
Fill in the blanks
With your 2026 prediction for the Guardians
The Guardians will win 90 games
They will finish in second place
We'll make the wildcard
And they will lose an individual round
Of the playoffs
The Guardians will win 91 games
Okay
Finish first
Okay
Earl Central
And we'll lose in the A.O.C.S
Is Tarek Scoobles
Arm going to fall off?
Yes
Yeah I can't take the Guardians
To win the division
Not over the Tigers
I sure I think they're too good
I'll say 88
I think they'll win 88 games
Will finish second
And unfortunately
I don't think they have a long playoff life
I will say that they lose in the wildcard round
Unfortunately
All three of you
Were plus 500
Yep
In the 88 to 91 range
Zack, if you had gone first
Would you have said 91
Or intentionally tried one up Earl
No, I was going 91
Because we had the 90 graphic earlier in the show
So I was going 91
I was going 90 does does
Because what they do
Look, the bottom of this division is mud
Right
So if you hit at all
The twins are awful
The socks will be better
Like there is a world
I mean you're counting on guys
Who can never stay healthy to stay healthy
Like I'm just as excited as everybody else
To see what an outfield of De Lauderdquan and Valera
Looks like
While fully acknowledging
De Lauderdquan missed two months in Valera
Valera's already hurt
They didn't make it a spring training healthy
And then what
So like
And I get why we keep focusing
And you want to focus on
Okay if everything goes right
This is what can happen
It will talk to Zach Meisel about it here in about 30 minutes
But there is
There is an ulterior world where
This does not go the way that we envision
Where it is back to guys in the outfield
That you don't really want to see out there
So I'm just being
I'm just trying to stay realistic
I think 88 is great
That's a good year for this team
But I can see a world where they remember you need to get in
I see a world where the tigers live up to the height
They could also win 75
And finish third
Behind the royals
But if they only win 75
That means something went wrong with the pitching too
Right
Well that's not a question
With arm injuries this year
With the state arm injuries in baseball
And again I'm picking them when 88 go to the playoffs
So I'm just saying I don't think it's out of the question
To see a sub 500 season
They're due
They got 75 million dollar payroll
Like most teams 75 million dollar payroll win 60 games
And we're saying they should win 90
And in the batting stats from last year
They're down there with all those teams
Yep
And it gets just outrageous
But if they hit
They're gonna win
And I think
So real quick Jason
You just mentioned the fact that their payroll 74 million in change
That obviously
Takes off the books of class A and or T
So it was a little higher
You subtract those two
And you get to the
Second lowest payroll of baseball
Is it the innate confidence in the guardians
And that organization
Their ability to somehow pull 90 wins out of a hat
Just the reason to be optimistic
If this was
Let's say that Pittsburgh pirates in the same situation
Do you guys think we all be
Be betting on 88 to 91 wins
Pittsburgh's actually been spending a little bit of money recently
But I hear what you're saying
Yeah, I mean listen
Zach like Zach's right
The pitching is very good
The bullpen should be very good
The lineup should be better
And you're basing it on just the culture of
The franchise
That they always seem to figure out a way
Like the graphic joke
You don't know how they do it
But you look up
And you got a bunch of players nobody has ever heard of
And they've won 88 to 92 games
And they're in the playoffs every year
So that's really what you're based
That's what I think all of us are
Absolutely
Our basing it on
It's just the fact that they always seem to figure it out
And all the credit goes for that
For goes to Steven vote
To Chris Antonetti to Mike Churnoff
These guys who have built this culture
To do what they did
To lose a legend
Like Terry Francona as a manager
Who will be in the Hall of Fame
And to hire the guy who's never managed
Day in the Life
Who has won
Now
A manager of the year
Every year he's every done this
Is insane
Like that doesn't that doesn't happen
Usually when you got a team with this
With the limited resources
This low of a payroll
You lose a legendary Hall of Fame coach
You're going to hit bottom
And you're probably you know
You don't necessarily get the first hire right
And they just absolutely they nailed it
And they knocked it out of the park
And that's a credit to vote
Obviously if we're doing the job
And to Chris and Mike for identifying him
As the guy because
You know there's only so many of these jobs to go around
There's not a ton of them
But you know the Guardians
It's an appealing attractive job
From the stability standpoint
The culture standpoint
But from the resources
It's not
That's just being honest
So they I mean that's just a great job to them
For figuring this all out
There is good as anybody
Leaning into what their strengths are
For sure
For reality
Yeah
Right
And you're right
That transition that could have been awkward
And what a sunk a lot of franchises
Instead it's it's strength in their culture
Right
They have their belief
So yeah
Guys got to hit
And the arms certainly have to stay healthy
But I think they've shown Jason
I think they will make one move
If like you said
If if something happens in the outfield
Now they're not going to go trade for three guys
And up the payroll by 100 million dollars
But if they get the pitching
If they get the development from the young guys
They will make one move in junior's life
They need to
Obviously we're excited to see
Hopefully Travis Pazana
Around I would think he's not going to be here
But for Memorial Day
But if he gets off to a great start
If he's hitting
Around Memorial Day
You make that
He's got to be ready by now
Right
Well I'm not trying to rush him
But he's got to be ready
I see I don't think with him
I don't think it's a contract clock thing
I don't think it's a contract manipulation
He missed a lot of time last year
He really does need the at-bats
And he has to force the issue
This isn't a
We're going to stall and wait two weeks
So that we get the extra year service time
No he has to go down there
And prove that he's ready
And that he's hitting
That he's ready to belong
And hopefully he can do that
We're taking a break
That's it for the KYC exclusive portion of the show
We come back
We welcome the YouTube audience in
We're talking
Welcome back to the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show
And welcome to our YouTube audience
Joining us for the second hour of the show Mikey
Guys we saved this for the YouTube audience
Because this is the juiciest story of the day
Despite the fact that it is Guardians
Opening day
Yesterday
The Browns and Miles Garrett reworked their contract
Essentially pushed back a giant portion
Of his bonus
Which was due to be paid to him yesterday
Now till the week before the start of the regular season
And everyone started to speculate
What could this mean?
Why do this?
And then
Zach Jackson
Quote tweeted a tweet from Jason
From over the cap
Not this Jason
But Jason from over the cap
Who is maybe the best cap guys
You want to take tag where you're full
It's already up full
Jason OTC said
This is a very odd move for a contract
With a no trained provision
There is zero cap benefit to the Browns and Garrett
I'm assuming
It's now deferring 10 million
That was going to be paid now to the fall
I guess maybe a bigger payment in the fall
When they pick it up
Zach Jackson Hours, Zach Jackson then said
I still don't see the Browns trading Miles Garrett
Anytime soon but as Jason OTC says here
This gives the team maximum flexibility to do so
If it ever made sense and Garrett agreed to it
Long-term flexibility for the team here
Not much short-term
Cap game
Oh, you then
Hang on, before we get
Can you put the Jason one up
One more time
There's an important line in there I wanted to see
Going to be paid now to the fall
I guess maybe a bigger payment in the fall
When they pick it up
Okay, just keep that in mind
Now go
Earl was very mad that people started speculating
This could mean an open door has been kicked
To a Miles Garrett trade discussion
So Earl, I want to let you start on this one
You're not having it
So I was irritated
I'm not irritated at the fans
Fans are going to do what they're going to do
They're going to speculate
They're going to come up with all kind of stuff
My irritation, personally, this is just me
It comes from some of our colleagues
And I feel like that
Sometimes they purposely trigger other people's emotions
For absolutely no reason
All three of us sitting here on this panel
Know that there is a very, very low chance
That Jimmy Haslam or Andrew Berry
Is considering trading Miles Garrett
Hang on
You think we think there's a low chance
That they're considering it?
Yeah, look at that
So at least I feel that way
I don't know if you feel that way
I don't think Jason feels that way
I feel that way, okay
So the fact that I feel that way
And I feel like most of us know
Exactly why Andrew Berry did
What he did with Miles Garrett
Like he's done with everybody
It seems like
You know, take the base converted
To a roster bonus
Kick the can, make the base salary lower
Down the road
This has always been his course of action
And it just frustrated me to see
That everybody is leading with this narrative of
Well, this means that the Browns
Was possibly entertaining trade
Miles Garrett or
Miles Garrett is action to be traded
So before we came on
I just want to read this
This was from Mary Kay Capit this morning
The Browns and Miles Garrett
Have agreed to a contract modification
They gave them cap flexibility
But they have no plans to trade
Him a league source tells Cleveland.com
The modifications confirmed by Cleveland.com
Results in more team families
Friendly structure of the contract
Which would make him easier to trade
But the Browns have no plans to
Plants to do so so far
In fact, if they had wanted to trade him
Which they don't
They wouldn't have needed to tweak the contract
And so to me
It's letting you know that
Andrew Berry is just following the same course of action
Of trying to create some type of cap flexibility
For whatever reason that he has
We know that most of us know that
And it just
It gets a little irritating when
The narrative is always
Trade is Godway, trade that Godway
And I always go back to
That clip of me
Here in T.J. Ward talk about
Dilling with Cleveland media
It can be tough sometimes
Because they always want the next guy
And the first hour to show
We opened up to show
Kind of told you my backstory
My dirty
Sometimes I even get frustrated with that
Because it's like
Why is it always the next guy
Why is it always this outside guy
Here it is
You got arguably
The second best Cleveland Browns player
Ever behind Jim Brown
Future Hall of Fame on your team
And people want to entertain
This idea of trading him
For some damn draft fix
That you can't even guarantee
You going to hit on
It just it triggers me man
Because we know that's a
In my opinion
A low reality
Well the why is because they
They're not winning
So why is that always the
Discussion because they're not winning
Because it is always about
The uncertain future
Now I don't think they're trading
My I was scared at any time soon
This is not a standard modification
This did not create a bunch of
Cap space that the Browns can use
That's the one point I want
To make clear is this is not the
Okay, this is what is
Do we're going to turn this into a
Signing bonus
Here's all your money up front
And we're going to spread the
Hit out over the next four years
That's what they do every time
That's not what this was
That that allows them to do that
Down the road
But this allows this gives them
The flexibility to do so
If they want to
No, I don't think that they want to
For a lot of the reasons that you
Outline
And I don't think that they intend
To anytime really soon
This just gives them the
Opportunity and we are headed to
A year for the Browns
Where we're all guessing on the
Outside and to a level on the inside
Of what really the expectations are
Right we know what expects this team
To win the Super Bowl or even make the playoffs
But is this a full March for arch
Or we expect these strats
Because the message it's been given is
They're expecting strats
They expect better player development
They expect the defense to not be
Completely wasted
They expect to be a more competitive team
In a division that seems wide open
Right but but this specific move
Is is mostly for the future
But it does at least open the
Possibility that if the trade is made
If something changed and that would be a big
Change that a trade could be made
And it would be more accompanying to the browns
I want to say this too
The cap is what it is and some people know
A lot about it and some people know a little about it
In either case
Wherever you stand on that
When the Browns did this deal with Miles Garrett
Just 15 months ago
They gave him 20 some million up front
So it doesn't seem like real money
That's for money
They did not do that intending to trade him
15 months later
Because regardless of your cap implications
Or who's paying what
Nine months from now or four years from now
That money is already paid
And is not coming back in anybody's pocket
So
There's a lot there to unpack
Nobody wants to trade Miles Garrett
I don't think anybody is like
Man this is great
We're going to get all these picks
If they're probably going to screw up
Like I don't think I don't think anybody
I wrote the column last year
Like right around now
They should trade them
And I still maintain
They should trade them
It would have been hard with the cap and everything else
They would have had to wait until the new league year begins
Whatever
But it's not because
I don't think Miles Garrett is a good player
It's because this team isn't going anywhere
And you're wasting
You're driving a Ferrari
And you're living in a house that's
Driving references with Miles
You got to be careful
Well this is true
But
Because he is driving a Ferrari
Miles on this roster
Is driving a Ferrari in a house that's about to be foreclosed on
Yeah
And
I mean I look at the Cowboys
The Cowboys went 7 and 10 with Micah Parsons
They traded Micah Parsons
What they do last year, 7, 9 and 1
So as good as
And Miles is better than Micah
I'm not disputing that
But I think we can agree there
In the same category type of player
But
When you are at that position
It just doesn't impact winning
At a high level
When the game against the winger
Miles had 5 sacks and lost by 20
Or 19
Yeah
I mean
You've got 8 wins the last 2 years with this guy
Who is by no question
He's going to Hall of Fame
He's going to Hall of Fame
He will go down as
Possibly the greatest to ever play his position
Certainly in the discussion regardless
But they've got 8 wins
And they spend a billion dollars in payroll over 4 years with him
And 0 playoff wins from 21 on
It's a multi-layered discussion
But if you
Boyle it down to should they have traded him or not
It's strongly they should have
But because they didn't
I don't know that they're going to right now
And if they did let's make this clear
That this makes it possible
That on June 2nd they could trade him
Or on September 15th they could trade
So it makes it more possible
Why did they do what they did then yesterday
If it wasn't to trade him
Why did they do this?
Because if it does work
It gives them more flexibility down the road
They're right now Jason
They're basically at the point
Where they're about out of contracts
That they can do what Earl said they do to all of them
They need more guys to do that
This makes it easier to do that down the road
It also gives them more out
It's both
I was in under the impression that Miles
Receives and that's where I'm looking at this
Like if you're miles
Why do you do this?
Why does Miles
Because it makes it easier for them to trade it
If he goes there
But he has a no trade cost
Yeah
He has tons of influence in this organization
Tons
Right
And he
Like he is going to be 31 this year
And it's always been in the back of my head
Like when he went on his tour at Radio Row
And he said everything that he said
When he basically burned the browns of the ground
I didn't see one lie
Right nobody argued
It was all true
Everything he said was true
Right
And just because he signed the contract
Doesn't mean he didn't still feel that way
That's right
And until the situation changes
Nothing's going to feel that way
However
This is my strongest reasoning
For why it's not going to happen now
In addition to that
It would be a huge change
The GM didn't want to be the guy
That traded four to Sean Watson
And traded away Miles Garrett
And he and now the former head coach
Were adamant
We're not trading Miles Garrett
Miles Garrett is rare
We need him
We know we need to get to more winning
We're not
That doesn't become easier
We get a minute
A little
Rid of Miles Garrett
Now there's a brand new head coach in town
Right
And whether you think that he's great or not
And whether you think that he can magically fix this offense
Or not
You don't do this to a guy
And say
Oh by the way
Now your best player has gone
Thanks for signing
And didn't he mention Miles Garrett
And this opening press
Well
He's got it
And should
And he go into detail
About how Miles Garrett kept him up at night
When he was the co-operator of the team now
And like
We talked in the first hour
And you said it
You know
I see my boy like
Kind of like
Trigger
And I thought
We talked about it
The fan part of me
I am still a fan of this football team
And so the fan in me
Who wants to see the Cleveland Browns be successful
I get the whole eight wins the last two years
But we are more successful with Miles Garrett
As a part of this football team
I just sat there and heard Jimmy Haslam say
In January
That he felt like this football team
Should have won more games
Than what they did
I can only assume
Even though top-munking is a first-time head coach
The fact that he has
All these years of football experience
He was the choice at head coach
Because they believe they are closer to winning than not
So why would you turn around
And trade your overall best player
I get the whole
You're trying to create a situation
To where down the road
If that's a possibility
You can do it
All I'm saying is
What triggered me
Personally
Is there are people out here talking
Like the Browns are placing themselves in the situation
That they are about to trade Miles Garrett right now
And we know that that is not true
So why even like the
Because it's opening the door
You have to admit though it didn't crack the window
I don't think you can say it's not true
I don't think you can sit here and definitively say
They are not trading Miles Garrett
I got 90-10
I don't agree with that either
But this move did crack the window
Or if you're at 90-10
Where were you at before this news yesterday
If I'm gonna always be a little open-minded
Because it is business
I just don't think it's a realistic play
I don't think it's a realistic play right now either
But this did set it up for the future
If they get to that point
And maybe I misinterpreted how some people put it out there
But y'all like like y'all
But there's people out here speaking like
Like this is
They set themselves up now to make a play
And draft David Bailey now
So they can trade Miles Garrett
Post June
That's still four weeks
So it is
What's exactly four weeks from now
So yeah that would be
But I still think that's
That's how it goes
If I have to put money on the table right now
I still think it's more likely than not
That he is here
But I am by no means at 90-10
That I still think like
Because Miles has a voice in this too
And yes, he's got a no-trade clause
But again, I go back to everything that he said
And yes, you could say it's a negotiating tactic
What did he say that was not true
Roughing
No, no people put him with the presentation now with the facts
Right
And it was all true
Yeah
And then the facts are that this is a bad franchise
And a bad place right now
Until multiple things change
And put on top of that
The fact that
Like it's pretty obvious
He did not
Have very fond views of Kevin
So Kevin's gone
He wanted Jim Schwartz
When I was Jim Schwartz
It's not even in the building now
And you saw that
So I'm just saying like
Miles has a role in all of this too
And he already came forward once
So
Do I think he'll be here
Yeah, I would still put it
Higher than 50%
That he's here
But I'm not anywhere near 90 times
Look, it's still
This team still
They have done cap gymnastics
And created short-term space
Right
And what is looked like a really bad situation at times
They have spent ahead to get out of
But the facts are
They just gave Miles Garrett
This outrageous guaranteed contract
Exactly a year ago
And to trade him now
There would still result
And then
This future flexibility allows them to move things
And gives them the chance there
But it doesn't create anything now
And until I see it processed
Pre-June 1
It's still more of a dead hit
Than they could afford
And I look at it like
Are you not trading him
Because it's in the best interest
The franchise
Are you not trading him
Because you don't want to be the GM
Who
Would bebning on the hook for two of the
Let me ask you this
Can Andrew Berry even trade
Miles Garrett
Without Jimmy Haslam saying
No
No, no, great
Andrew Berry can make a move
And kick returner
And fourth-wide receiver
A third quarterback
And kicker without doing permission
But that's why you make it that move
But he's not even in that tier
He's in his own tier
And he's in that tier of influence
In the organization
Yes
Look at the look at Don't you trade
Nico Harrison
Sent look at the Lakers
And look who no longer has a job
Yeah
Nico
I just think
To your point
To go through one in 31
And the misery
That that created
And to have two
Number one overall picks
If neither one of them
Is still with the franchise
Less than 10 years later
That is a disaster
Yeah, well that's the problem
One in 31 concluded nine years ago
Yeah
We're right back there
Yeah
And so like I get it
But again, I just think
You have to look at it
Pragmatically
That like
This franchise is not close
They can say whatever they want
Zach, do you think this franchise
Is close to winning consistently
And I'll highlight a little bit
They are close to being in top three of the draft
Yeah, they're far much closer to that
Than they are being a superbook
And that's with a defense
That's a legit top five or seven
And the meter keeps running on miles
And players can be
At that position
Go look at history
They play at a high level
Late in their thirties
Bruce Smith
Reggie White
These guys were productive players
In their late thirties
I get all that
Another part of this
And people say
Well look, they just saw what
Max Crosby got
Before he fell apart
Right
And that's what a player
The Max Crosby
Miles is two years older than Max Crosby
And one of the realities
Of trading Miles Garrett
Outside of Andrew Berry's ego
Outside of cat implications
Is getting real value for him
Was going to be impossible
Because a team saying
We're going to give
Three first ones and one
And actually doing it
Is different
And then if a team is doing that
The first two are going to be like
The thirtieth pick in the draft
Right now you're in a situation
Where the twenty-fourth pick
The sixth pick in the draft
Doesn't look all that sexy
Now if you can get multiple picks
For next year
You might trade Miles Garrett
Maybe
Maybe, maybe
There is some deal right now
Where the Dallas Cowboys want Miles Garrett
And this is the bridge
To it happening on June 2nd
But that seems highly unlikely
Either one of y'all ever seen a movie
New Jack City
I have a million years to go
One time ago
So, you know, and you know Brown
And the courtroom he said
This thing is bigger than you know Brown
That's what I mean when it comes to Andrew Berry
This thing is much bigger than Andrew Berry
Andrew Berry don't even have the type of
cliche or clout to be
Even to try to make that type of move
Without Jimmy Haslam
And right now
I don't see Jimmy Haslam signing off
For any type of trade for Miles Garrett
Well the problem is the last time
Those two collabed on a big
Look where it got everybody
It was four years ago this week
Cause Matt Facts
Yeah, like it's this
I just
And I hear you
And I'm not trying to be totally close
My tour but again
Right now
And real time
This season
Next season whatever
I just don't see that
I don't see it be in the case
I can be totally wrong
Between now and September 30th
I think it's highly unlikely
But let's see where things are then
Like I said
I'd be stunned if something's
Cooking right now to be
In four weeks or even in two months
But this I think
You look at it structurally
Is a bridge to
Miles turning back into what he was two years ago
It's it's run
We're talking about should we're having a runway
This is a runway
To potentially trading Miles Garrett
And that's what I think potentially
And eventually
Or the words that I would stress
That's why I just get hung up on
Why did you do it?
Why'd you do it?
Well you're always doing
CapExercises
I get it
But he's not making any more money
And no one has yet to show me
How this creates more cap space
I don't see how this creates more cap space
It gives you the chance to do more
Restructures to create more cap space down the road
Okay
Yeah it makes it easier to do
Because you're right now you are
Almost flat out of contracts
That you can do this too
Yeah
You need to get more of those
But you're invested in this guy till 2030
Yeah
It basically full gear
And he's and there's nothing wrong with that
Because he's a weather changing player
So this is about what it potentially
Like I almost fully agree with her
But I'd be stunned if it means something
Right now
But I think is this
Organization continues to confront
That the go this way or this way
And the down the middle is not really going anywhere
I think it opens the door too
If it goes this way
This move can be made
I do like how you put that
That Andrew Berry can be doing a CapExercise
And I've heard a lot of people say that
Andrew Berry was one of the first people
Who started this whole
You know, converting
One million dollar base
And kicking the can down the road
And Andrew Berry is a smart guy
Who's to say that, you know, him and other GM's
And other guys are sitting in a
Protecting Cap
Five, six years from now
And every guy body's hold it up
You know, we tried this
Let's try this now
Let's see how this works
And so it can just be an experiment
We probably won't know the why
And so, you know, he speaks
Or a few years from now
When we see more contracts done like this
For guys who got big money like Miles Davis
I think the general thing
With the way they've done things
Is like this been going on forever
With these simple restructures
And pushing money forward
But when you see like void money
Boyd years getting pushed to 2032
That's usually for teams that are on the brink
Not teams that are on the brink of
Of the top three of the draft
Right, so that's that's what strains you
They're spending
They're committed
They're doing their part
They're trying to manage every dollar of the cap
Because every year you roll over what you don't spend
Right
And that has kept them ahead of the curve
Even with take swallowing bad contracts
And dealing with arguably the worst contract ever
But eventually you have to pay for these guys
And eventually you have to have the flexibility to do it
So this is like a playing both sides
If it works out
This is a long term flexibility
To keep extending miles
If it doesn't work out
This makes it easier for the team
In little subtle ways
When if a move needs to be made
I just like I said
To actually get value
To trade milescare
To swallow the prize
To get the owner on board
To have the fan base on board
To get semi-proper compensation
Like there's just no landing point for that
Right? Because like there's two ones enough
No
No
And so then the team does
Okay, well he's going to be 31
And we know he's prickly
And we know he's going to want influence in our build
And where he's never been before
So like actually landing that plane
Is the runway is not real long
Zach, one last thing before we had to break
You had asked us
If you could have a minute to explain
The Browns spending plans
We made up a
Professor Zach class
We're back to going to CAP 101
So Zach, the floor is yours
Professor Zach
Take it away
What?
Well look at that Christmas outfit
That my wife picked up
Yeah, you know, I kind of just touched on it
Like they are pushing money forward
And their thought is that every single year
The CAP is going up
So it's free spending
It's free interest
It's this is our budget
And guess what?
If we go over it, it's fine
Because the budget is 20 million more
Next year
It's strange because it hasn't worked
And people have angst about that
And that's what's lingering out there
That's where you're at
And like I said, when you see them
Bringing in 30 year old offensive lineman
And making void years till 2032
It makes you stop and think what year is it
Right?
So that gives you the indication
That they're not necessarily planning to stink
This year
Or year after
We know a stadium is supposed to open in 2020
But they are aggressively spending over the CAP
And what they tried to do with the Watson contract
Is no different than Philly is doing with Jalen Hertz
Jalen Hertz has piles and piles of dead money for down the road
And eventually they will move on
And Philly will stink for a year
And they will swallow it
It's just different
Because it hasn't worked here
With Watson
It's different
Because the Browns got in a situation
Where he's only on the roster right now
Because they could not afford to cut him
But they are spending
They are committed to spending
And they are smartly
With the right people doing the right things
To push it forward
And maintain short term flexibility
Is it ideal to have 23 million
And dead money on Joel Betonio?
No, but is it a bigger problem
That you had to go spend on guys
That other teams are willing to get rid of
That's the big problem
We're quick
Yeah
I want to see the picture real quick
Because I know you were just spotted
I got to see this picture again
Zach is teaching
We ain't class
Let's be 100
Jason, what are we doing in class right now
While Jason is
What year is it?
I'm blowing spit wads
30 seconds because we got to run
But I totally understand everything you said
I've separated the exact same thing
Multiple times on the show
I do find it interesting
I know people have very strong opinions about Joe Banner
And Joe Banner is Italian evaluator
But the one thing that he has said publicly
Many times that I find interesting is
You only borrow from the future
If you think you have a chance to win
Right
The next year you're in a half has to be your window
So what is your response to that?
I agree
No, no
At the time that Joe Banner was doing it
The cap was not rising at this point
Yeah
But I agree
That's where people's frustration is
Yeah
Why are you borrowing from your future
Right
Why are you second mortgage in a house that is not worth
Right
Why do you still owe to show them what's an 86 million dollars after this year
All right, that's enough
Oh, Matt, no
Taking a break when we come back
Derrius Garland is playing well in L.A
Should the calves have birish or morphs about the trade
Spoiler alert
No
When we come back in the ultimate cleavage sports
Welcome back to the ultimate cleavage sports
So Derrius Garland is healthy and playing extremely well
Good for him
With the clippers
Yeah
It's good for him
And like both sides can win on a trade
So hopefully that's the case here
And there you can see the graphic
First player can be a history of 30 plus 3s
And 50 plus assists
And their first seven starts with any new team
I have to look at this green
Because I'm missing a contest
And I'm walking around left eye blind
Or right eye blind
I got one working eye and it's my bad eye
Left eye Lloyd
Left eye Lloyd
Guys, do you think there's any remorse
Within the calves for making the trade of Derrius Garland for James Hard
I feel just like you do it
Actually, I tweeted this out earlier
It's good to see Derrius Garland playing well
I'm happy for him
You know, a change of scenery
Some fresh air seems to have been doing him well
The fact that the matter is
We talked about this for the last two or three years
That back quarter him and Donovan Mitchell just didn't work
It just didn't mesh
The situation here in Cleveland
It wasn't going to get us to the promised land
And so a move had to be made
I'm not going to look at Derrius Garland
Balling in LA and be like
Damn
Right
I miss Derrius Garland
That should be going on here
When quite frankly, James Hard and they did nothing
But ball out since he's been here in Cleveland
And the Cleveland Cavaliers are still in a position
To where everything they want to accomplish
Is right there in front of him
So for right now
Like I'm happy for him
I hope he stays healthy
I hope he continues to play well
This is one of those situations
Like you said, it can work out for both parties
What he's doing in LA has nothing to do
What we doing here in Cleveland
Keep balling out Derrius, stay healthy
I wish you well, but we good over here
Yeah, the word accomplishes the one that I want to use
And I don't think either team has really accomplished anything yet
Yeah, but two months in
It looks like both are on their way to accomplish
And what they want
The Cavs wanted to be more ready to win the title right now
The Cavs wanted this version of James Harden
A bigger, stronger, more durable, more proven player
For right now
And the Clippers wanted to get younger
And wanted to get a Superstar
And saw a potential Superstar
And saw this opportunity
So yeah, we'll see where it goes
But look, when you and that girl break up
Just block her on Instagram
Don't look back
Don't creep around
Move forward
Right, just do it
And that's what you got to do
That's what's best
That is what's best
I'm happy
Like he's playing well
He will have a chance there
To have his whole career
in front of the video
He can be on the court
I think everyone question
That was the biggest question
It wasn't ability
Right, it was a little bit fit
But it was a lot of durability
And availability for the playoffs
Yeah, when they made the trade
I'm paraphrasing here
I don't remember exactly
But Kobe said something to the effect
of
This one
May hurt in three or four years
They can't worry about three or four years right now
There is a lot of complicating factors
Working
Within the calves
One of them being
You got to resign Donovan
This summer
And it wasn't working
And you guys are eluded
to the injury history
The derriest is a phenomenal player
He's on the court
We all know that
But he has been on the court
And I think
Were you able to count on him?
Were you able to count on him
During the most important time of the year
I don't know the
I don't see how you can say that you could
So all of that plays into the decision
To have to move on from him
And plus
I mean listen
People around Darious
For years
Have wanted to get him away
From this two ball handler set
First with Colin
Sexton
And then with Donovan
Where the people
Have felt like
He is best suited to run an offense
Put the ball in his hands and let him go
And he's got that ability now
With the clippers
To be more of
The guy in charge
And initiating
And all that
Where he didn't have to have the dual role
That he always had here
So
I wish him nothing but the best
He's a great dude
I hope he goes on
To a long and productive career
And
Yeah, I mean in four years
This one may hurt a little bit
But you can't worry
This team is especially
We've heard for years
Long run away
Long run away
Got a long run
No
You got to get the plane off the ground man
And that's what this trade was about
Because you're running out of time
In terms of contracts
Right
To make this thing go
So
I don't think there's any remorse
From Gladys healthy
I hope he can continue to stay healthy
I hope he plays great in LA
But there's no remorse from the calves over this one
When the calves stunk
And they acquired Darious Garland
Who had played more college games
They were looking at the future
And hoping he'd be the guy
Then Donovan Mitchell came along
And things changed
The circumstance changed
The lack of availability
In key moments
Made it easier to make this move
And I just don't think you look back
I don't think he does any good
Yeah
No, it was so wherever
I think everybody alluded to it
You know
And I think Kobe Altman had also mentioned
You know
He just felt like the last couple playoff runs
The Cleveland Cavaliers was just too young
You know
We needed to get older
We needed to get more playoff experience on this roster
And it's just one of those situations
Four years from now
James Hartman will be retired
You know
Hopefully Darious Garland
Is still playing lights out
Ballin
And we'll come back to it
But if we want a championship
Or two within that time span then
Doesn't really matter
No, it don't
So you know
It's just
It's one of those situations
To where
It's a rarity
Where it's working out
For everybody that's involved right now
Yeah, to win win
The Cavs are 14 and 5
Since they acquired James Hartman
Darious is playing great in LA
He needed a new set of
teammates and a fresh start out West
The Cavs needed a little more playoff presence
A little more size in the back court
You make the swap
And so far it's been a win-win for both sides
I wish the best for Darious
Hope him a long healthy career out on the West Coast
And the Cavs
You got at least one run here
Maybe two, three with a current iteration
The team
Go on a championship
Speaking of championships guys
They cleave in charge of their regular season
Home finale
On Saturday against the long
Island Nets
They've already clinched
A playoff birth
This is a chance to clinch a
Second home playoff game
And it is Nekwan
Tomlin bobblehead night
On Saturday if you want to get your hands on one of these beautiful
Nekwan Tomlin bobbleheads head over to clevelandcharge.com
Get your tickets tip off
For that game is set
For at 7 p.m
When we come back guys
We are being joined by
The number one guardians beat reporter
Who's located in Cleveland
Currently sitting at a hotel in Seattle
The one the only sacrifice after the break
Welcome back to Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show
Also known as the athletic out
Zach Jackson and myself both work at the athletic
And so does our next guest Zach Meisel
Joining us from an undisclosed location in Seattle
Guardians opening night to night
Uh, game will end after midnight
I hate these late start Zach
We were
Winning about that in the first hour
How insane this is to start so late
But anyway
Welcome. How are you buddy?
I actually learned a little bit about how that works
Because I said the same thing
I said why
When you started at one or four local time
And then
I said no games should start after 4 p.m.
On opening day
4 p.m. should be the latest start time allowed
Tell me why that's incorrect
No it's it is correct
But it's the mariners who get to choose
And so it's as simple as they can
Pack this place better if it's a night game they believe so
Yeah
Here we are
I'll let you know what happens when you wake up
Oh I'm staying up
I'll watch we got hoops on
We got call troops on tonight
I'll be up too
I'm locked in man
I love baseball
But
Zach we played a game
In the first segment
Or in the first hour of the show
Fill in the blank
The Guardians will win blank games
Finish blank the division
And the season will end with blank
You asked me to
Yes, I'm asking to play along
Will you just wake up
I don't I don't want to
I want to do the no fence riding thing here right
I don't want to
Or you look
Right off the rip
But this team is so hard for me to figure out
And Jason I kind of feel like
You know when when you say something positive
And everyone's like whoa hold on
I thought you were dead inside
Uh
That's kind of that's kind of where I'm at with this team where
I see all the projections in like
I've seen 75 wins by one computer system
And 76 by another
I talked to
Or a different organization in their office
And that person told me they have the Guardians
It's 76 wins in their internal database
And I'm like I just don't understand
I don't get it
I watched Nolan Jones take 400 some of that
I watched Carlos Santana
I watched Jonathan Rodriguez
He clean up in a playoff game
Like it can't be
It cannot be as bad as what we watched
I talked to a player the first week of camp
And I said
Give me the sales pitch
Like what makes you optimistic
And he said look at our offense
We cannot be
Anyworse
It's so I'm like okay
You guys realize that
I'm excited about Chase De Lauder
And eventually Travis Bazzana
Joey Cantillo and Slade Sikoni
And like I just
I think there's a lot here
Now the most important person in the organization this year
Is the freaking trainer
Because he's got to keep these people healthy
Yep
But
I mean we
The three of us picked him to go to the playoffs by the way
Yeah
So we're way off the scales
The funny thing is that the royals
We're going to be my
My dark horse
All off season
I thought they'd win the division
Then the Tigers signed
Remember Valdez
And I'm like okay
Let's
Come back to Earth here
And then I think just thinking through
During spring training
The way that this could work
And like looking at the lineup now
I think is already better than what it was last year
And
You know you add Bazzana to the mix
You give Valera back
And I don't think that's the two-distant future
And like the lineup might actually be decent
And the rotation's got to stay healthy
Because they have no depth
But I think this team is actually
More formidable than it's been the last couple of years
So this is a long-winded way of not answering your question
You should be a politician
I don't know
Like the safe play would be to say they finish second
They win like 87 games and they make the playoffs
But I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility
You're like if the lottery and Gavin Williams get hurt
They could win 74
But exactly what I said
Great but if they stay healthy
They could win 92
Like that's not impossible
So I said we're counting on guys
We're counting on guys who never stay healthy
And we're just assuming that suddenly they're now going to be healthy
And everything's going to break right
I'm like okay well if DeLotter misses two months
And Valera can't stay healthy because he's already hurt
Now this lineup looks a lot like it did last year
And now I do see a world where 75 is in play
Yeah I just think
The two guys who had the best springs on the pitching side
Were Sikoni and Cantillo
And that's huge for them
Because we have a lot of questions beyond Williams and Bobby right
Yep, yep
And then you think about who had the best springs in terms of position players
And it was DeLotter with Angel Martinez
It was it was all the guys you need to step up
Bonaylor looked great
So I don't know
Maybe I'm just drunk on spring optimism
It's impossible
But it's I just think they're more formable
I think what's going to happen is it's going to be
Maybe a little ugly in the early going
This first road trips brutal
You come home you get the cubs
The royals you have to go to Atlanta
Like the first month of the season is just it's rough
Yeah
But if they weather that
I think the roster is going to get better as they go
And the schedule eases up
Like I think what's going to happen is it's maybe
A little tumultuous at the early going
And then by the summer when everyone's paying attention to training camp
Like they usually do they'll they'll sneak up on you
And they'll have people feeling good about where they're at
Zach the folks who are looking for a place to put the flacco statue
And the Donovan Mitchell statue
Do they have to get ready for a DeLotter statue right away or no
I'm almost worried if we're like overdoing the hype
And I'm as guilty as anybody
I've seen the rookie of the year odds go from like 22 to one to
Then our buddy TA said he got 14 to one yesterday
So I mean it's it's all predicated on health
I think the remarkable thing about him is
He missed he had he was had some leg tightness
Early in spring
And he sat out for like four or five days
And it's not like there's no rust
This guy just falls out of bed and hits
So it means a lot when a risk of earth organization
Like the Guardians took a kid who hadn't played in an actual game in three months
And said hey I know that we might get eliminated from the playoffs today
But go out and make your debut
Like it's for the Guardians to do that is is mind blowing
And it shows you just how talented this kid is
If you can just stay on the field
Zach I got a lot of optimism for one Gavin Williams in the 2026 campaign
Primarily because of how we finished the 2025 season
I even told Mikey McNuggets my big boat prediction was that Gavin Williams was going to leave the American lead in wins
Talk about Gavin Williams potential if he's healthy for the season
What's the what's the ceiling for him
I mean it's an ace right like he was he was a first-round pick
He was a top 25 prospect he has all those credentials like it's it's not because he's
He's not your prototypical Cleveland starter where they get some kid who's off the radar
But he he throws strikes they add a few miles an hour on the fastball
And suddenly their Corey Kluber or their shame Bieber like this is the dude with
Elite stuff like he can blow you away. He's got a great curveball and and he racks up strikeouts
So that's the formula is can you just
Pepper the strike zone can you not nibble like we saw last season when
There's a start he had in Toronto where he was like through four of third innings and he was in 107 pitches and
Everything was painful. It was like a root canal and
You know he he changed some things and I think he just made a concerted effort to just stop messing around and and throw strikes
And and maybe that would
Blower his strikeout totally guys would make more contact, but it worked like he looked like an ace for the last few months last season
So you know, I think the next step for him is just pitching deeper in the game
Can you give him 200 innings and with that probably comes 200 strikeouts? It probably comes with some, you know saw young votes
Said I know Zach worked
Literally over a year on the story you just wrote the other day about the timeline and the transfer of power from the Dolan family to David Blitzer
So I just want to give you a moment to just sort of extrapolate everything that you wrote the first
The first time David Blitzer can take majority control is after the 27 season
Really he holds control of when that will be and if there is a workstop, and she can
Kick that can down the road until later. Just tell us everything that you know everything that you learned on
This transfer that is impending. I think we can say at this point
And what the guardians franchise may look like on the other side under David Blitzer led group
Nobody knows because
Because no there's so much uncertainty with the league and I think that's that's the issue here is
You know you can dream of some fantasy where this super wealthy guy comes in and spends a ton of money
But the league has to change for that to take place. I think
You know, it's I think it's more of a partnership. Maybe than I realized like the Dolan's plan to be part of this forever
I think like it won't be Paul Dolan's decision. It'll be his kids
Kids decision if that family ever
It's out of this so when blitzer does take over he's majority owner
But the Dolans are still going to be minority owners and have a say it's just blitzer has the final say right? So
I think
The key here is like yeah blitzer could take over after next season
He could do what a lot of new owners do and make a goodwill gesture and sign some free agent kind of like the Edwin and karnasya own bit 10 years ago and
That's great, but I think what a lot of people feel is
For there to be like substantial changes in the way the guardians operate
MLB's gonna have to change and we just don't know what this looks like because
The collective bargaining agreement's gonna expire on December 1st. They're probably gonna be a lockout
No one knows if it's gonna extend into next season
Will there be a salary cap and the big thing is a salary floor like a the guardians have
The lowest or second lowest payroll in baseball it's 75 million right now, which is inexcusable
But if there's a salary floor that might have they might have to double that and so
That I don't think Paul Dolan's gonna want to do that. I don't think even David blitzer's gonna want to do that
Unless there's centralized TV revenue or just something changes on that front. So
I
Go ahead
No, I just you know, there's there's a huge question mark and in a lot of it's related to
The league in the union. I don't want to turn this into economics 101
But a salary floor would indicate your force to spend a certain up to a certain level
And I don't think people realize how much the league already gives the guardians to begin with and under this revenue sharing plan
So I
Like I'm all for a salary floor. I just don't know
Is the league going to give them even more money to allow them to meet it
But I guess that's more of me venting there's not really a question in there
But I guess the thing I would I would ask is explain to people like we're five-year-olds
How a team in 2026 can have a payroll
That we haven't seen since the 90s because I don't care about a TV contract being cut in half
That does that doesn't fully explain to me how it's acceptable to have a payroll
It's 75 million
The best way I can explain it is there's 30 teams in MLB
29 of them hate the guardians and here's what
The pirates in the rate like the razor of example the pirates and the white socks or the the teams that don't spend
Yeah, usually don't win and so those teams hate the guardians because the guardians don't have incentive to spend money because
They still win the central most years, right? So
Now they should spend more they should do more to get over the hump. They want a world series in 78 years
But those small market teams that don't have the consistent track record of winning
Can't stand the guardians because the guardians get away with it because they do win
And then the big market teams look at the guardians and they say
You're doing so much right. Why don't you just spend money because you're making us look bad
You're making the meds look bad because the med spend 350 million and they don't win
And then it powers the guardians argument that hey
money doesn't necessarily translate to championships, right?
So that's why if you ever wonder like why don't the small market owners band together and and argue with the big market owners that
Hey, we need you know better revenue sharing in this sport and everyone needs to be on an equal playing field
Well, it's because the league does kick back revenue sharing to those small market teams and make it so that they're not as
Motivated to spend it hard. So the league has needed overhaul economically for
Decades and decades and I say all the time. They're like you look at the NFL
Kansas City can keep Patrick Mahomes his whole career. It's a small market. They don't have to worry about
Okay, he's got one year left on his deal
Do we need to trade him to New York or LA? No, we never talked like green Bay can make the the Super Bowl and Roger Gidell
Is not worried about the ratings going down because it's a small market
So we never have these conversations in football and I I just I can't wait for the day that we don't have them in baseball
I just don't know if that's ever gonna happen
All right, Zach. We got to cut you loose, buddy
I appreciate it. Have fun tonight. Thanks Zach and read Zach's article on Jose Vermeer as it came out today
It was to yeah, yeah, Zach. Zach had a great article. He always writes great stuff on Jose
You can get more Zach on his podcast with bowl that he does every week. They do a guardians show every week
I mean Zach Zach is the chronicleer of Jose
I think it's fair to say and he's a unique figure because he rarely ever talks
But Zach still finds angles and ways to get in to tell interesting stories about him
So imagine if he did talk
Think to talk you think some of my topics about the Browns is what imagine of Jose part of the part of the reason that he
Loves Cleveland's because he doesn't have to because he can just
Live in the corner of the locker room and people leave him alone. That's why he to OG. Yeah
All right, take it a break. Uh, when we come back. My court. We're talking about
Dewan Jones or whether or not the Browns can count on him in any capacity. Yep next season that morning
Welcome back to the ultimate Cleveland sports show Dewan Jones remember him who he's been off the field more than he's been on it
It feels like the last couple of years, but the Browns have a decision-make with Dewan
What is his future and can the Browns count on him to play along the offensive line next season and where?
Well, I'll start
There's no future right now unless he can stay healthy. Yeah, all three of his seasons
He's been in the plans to some level. He's been impressive to some level is in his first two seasons that they've all ended on IR
Hasn't necessarily been his fault. I think he has transformed his body and tried to position himself
He looked great last year to have his story physically. He looked great. He did
So if the Browns played a game today, he would be there starting left tackle
We know he failed at left tackle last year
You know, I think his role is to compete for playing time and maybe compete for left tackle against the rookie
We'll see you know how that goes. We haven't seen the draft yet
We haven't seen I think there will be a post draft veteran offensive line edition unless they draft three linemen
Which is possible
But internally they like to want as a player they like him as a person everybody's rooting for him
It just hasn't happened because of the injuries. Yeah, and and this is not to disson
This is the reality of the situation
If it would have worked and this was one of the understated but big story lines last year
This guy moving to left tackle if it would have worked it would have been a big hit
But he got hurt in game three playing right tackle. He was benched after two games as a left
Yeah, so it hasn't worked. So it's no longer a need
But that's that's on the disappointing side of things like they there's a one for DeWine Jones to play and play well
And earn that next contract
But his body has just not cooperated to this point. Yeah good dude good person
I've heard as well that people inside the organization really like DeWine Jones and it comes down to health
If you can stay healthy then you are a rotational tackle primarily on the right side
And if worse comes the worse and you were down on your last you had to put them on the left side
Cool, but you know, I agree with the fact that he has transformed his body and that he has put in the work
And like we see with athletes all over the place
Sometimes you can put in the work and either the results don't show or unforeseen circumstances happen
And these are the breaks. So if he can get healthy and just focus on being a death piece a rotational guy
You know then we can talk about you know what a contract looks like for a potential backup office of London
After this season, but I mean for him
It's all about just getting through the 2026 season healthy. Just guys still 24 years old. Yeah, right still learning the NFL game
And you know what starting right tackles even average ones make these days a lot a lot of so it's out there for
So he's got every motivation to to be in shape and show up and see where it goes
The one thing they've done which I like is
Everybody's making a big deal about the offensive lineman exiting and those are coming in
It's not necessarily about the five of the play on September 10th, right?
It's about finding guys that are going to be in the plants and having some versatility
If you are having a season of being able to move guys around and if the wand is healthy and showing he can play at a starter's quality level
They will find room for him to be out there because the wand at his best especially as a pass blocker
It's good enough to be on a good offensive line. I mean we've seen the tape of him
Brian Boltinger has done the breakdowns
Bolting loves his
Ability in pass-box particularly his his his hands and the way that he can move
He he wasn't
Just a disappointment at left tackle last year. It was an abject disaster correct to
And I mean we spent all last summer talking about what a huge opportunity. This is for DeWine
He's about to make himself a lot of money if he pulls this off and two games in they had to pull the plug the only one faster was charlie fry
It's
Thought made it through the first half of the first round. I don't know
We could probably do not just a show but a series of shows on people on how that really went
But that's a pretty good
Charlie Fry was the starting quarterback for one game and they traded him to Seattle
Let me give everybody a thought as the why I look so old as I look in this camera right now
Charlie Fry drafted 21 years ago next month was quarterback number nine of the new era Cleveland Browns
They're now on 42 looking for 43 44
So back to hour one this is why
This is why
That's it, but I mean
We spent all summer talking about DeWine DeWine DeWine this big opportunity is that he can make himself a lot of money
This is huge like that he could be the left tackle the future and he was so bad
He was so bad in two games. You're like nope
But let me say this and then this is optimism right on the realistic side if you get a guy at a late to mid-round
Graphic price at a premium position that plays for you for a couple years
You're ahead of the curve. Yeah, because you can spend your resources elsewhere
That goes for the current quarterback situation it goes for a couple of moving parts at other places
But you know it times up on DeWine because this is the final year of his contract
But that's what you're looking for you're looking for guys drafted outside those top 100 picks who become hits
And the best way for that to happen is for you to have success otherwise and put them in situations where there's good players around
I he's a backup on this team. He's not going to start at right tackle. I wouldn't think
No, not as tight as Howard is healthy and I hear what you're saying like as of now
He would start a left tackle. Well, it's March. They're not playing for a while
He's not going to be the starting left tackle
So I think he's a backup now at this point waiting for an opportunity
I am excited though if he's healthy to see what he can bring to the table
You know when I look at the additions that Andrew very made on the office of line
He approached for the agency like and my opinion how he's approached the draft with those guys
Always got to this versatile guys that can play multiple positions
And I would George Warhol in a foe with top-munking and his new scheme coming in
I'm interested to see how DeWine Jones plays when he's healthy
I'm interested to see you know if there's anything and I know it's probably a little bit
If you get a little bit out of Zach Zentor right with a different scheme and a different offensive line coach
With that looks like Luke Whiplier the same thing
And so when you have these guys that you've drafted kind of like at the back end of their brows career
With their last opportunity to prove if they can do something
Mary you know married out with the fact that you you've signed some veterans and you're going to probably draft at least two
Offensive linemen and it just be interesting to see how these guys who hadn't shown us much for injury or other reasons
How they perform with top-munking and George Warhol that's their offensive line
Think about those names. Could you walk my guard? Sorry Zach. No, he's too. He's too big. Yeah. Think about those names. Good luck coach monkey
Good luck coach. Good luck coach George does have a good reputation around the league
I what you said about Zach Zentor is what I thought last year is like okay
Well these guys weren't really coached his rookie year
That's why we're able to jump in and sort of be the o-line coach
Maybe things will be different with bloom. It wouldn't any different
Someone no different. He's really struggled in the previous doesn't move anymore after his injury
So I see on the stage
Oh
It depends on how many they drafted and how guys fill in you know, I mean
I thought when they had 10 picks and before they went and got three veteran offensive linemen
I thought that drafted three offensive linemen was a certainty
And it's still as a possibility especially because there's a lot of guys in this class in particular who were college tackles
Who could get moved inside if if it doesn't work or if they're just needed there as rookies right right and so if those
Couple of those guys come and then the other question is are they gonna trust Whiplier or is Elton Jenkins a center
Or they're gonna draft a center in the third round and hope that guys your center for five years
I think all I think you could see all three of those cases working out because I think
They probably want Elton Jenkins to play center and then Tevin Jenkins or a rookie to play right guard
Because Ion Johnson is your biggest ticket free agent and he's been a left
He played right as a rookie, but he's been a left guard real quick 10 seconds. How many players do they take in this draft?
They probably end up taking eight eight or nine. How many picks are they going in? They have nine right now
They traded one for tightest hour. All right
All right, that's it. Thanks for joining us today on the ultimate Cleveland Sports Show. We'll be back tomorrow with more Cleveland sports. Thanks for watching
