Critique of BioLogos' Article on Biblical Lifespans
About this episode
[Season 5, Episode 1]
BioLogos recently published an article titled Why Did People in the Bible Live So Long? Of course, this got our attention.
After reading it, here is our summary of the argument:
- The author begins by observing that the life span data contained in the early part of Genesis are quite surprising. (We agree at least on this one point.)
- Could this be real, factual information about how long people lived? The author does not think so, in light of all that is currently known about aging today.
- The best course of action, according to the author, is to examine other ancient genealogies to see how they might help us in understanding this information in Genesis. Various points are given about other ancient geneaologies (none nearly as complete or detailed as that contained in Genesis).
- The author (who states that he "holds the Bible in high esteem") concludes that these people in Genesis didn't actually live hundreds of years. This information is most likely purely rhetorical and was never meant to be taken literally.
As you might imagine, we have a few things to say. It's astounding how some of the most precious data in the world is being thrown out, downplayed, glossed over, explained away, and even seen as embarrassing.
