Cubs Claim Ben Cowles, DFA Shelby Miller

The Chicago Cubs just brought back infielder Ben Cowles by claiming him off-wavers from

the Toronto Blue Jays.

This 26 year old has bounced around rosters a lot over the past 15 months.

To make room on their 40 man roster, the Cubs shifted right hander Shelby Miller to the

60 day injured list.

Miller had surgery on his elbow last October and will miss all of the 2026 season.

His two year deal worth $2.5 million needed this move anyway.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays had grabbed Cowles just 11 days ago on February 18th to clear

space for Mac Shursers one year contract.

Cowles started as a 10th round pick by the New York Yankees in 2021.

He got traded to the Cubs at the 2024 deadline for Mark Leider Jr.

Since joining Chicago's 40 man roster in November 2024 to dodge the Rule 5 draft, he's been

designated for assignment several times and even spend time with the Chicago White Sox.

In 2025, Cowles played 113 games at AAA Iowa and 15 at AAA Charlotte.

He hit 235 with a 300 slash line, 9 homeruns, 48 RBIs and 18 steals, though caught 8 times.

For Rear in AAA, he's at 235 over 536 played appearances.

Defensively versatile at shortstop, second base, third base and some outfield, Cowles has

two minor league options left.

No big league debut yet.

But this could give him another shot with the Cubs this spring.
