A brutal day in the transfer portal for the Iowa State Women.
Why one cyclone football player stayed in three keys to beating Tennessee,
all of that after a word from Whiskey River.
Looking for a good time?
Thought so. Whiskey River is just the place.
We've got the booze, the food, the vibe, and the amazing rooftop patio.
The only thing missing is you. Whiskey River.
Welcome into the Northwest Bank Studios. For the daily clone coming your way on a Tuesday,
a little bit later and I hate to follow up that ad of Whiskey River that's always a good time
with some bad news for cyclone fans as five cyclones have hit the transfer portal today.
Addy Brown the headliner Iowa State star forward has been the do-it-all player for this team
the last three years. An absolute star who battled injuries this year announces on social media
that she'll be moving on from Iowa State. The same goes for Reese Beatty,
a sixth man for Iowa State this year. Got some starts as the backup point guard
and showed a lot of promise. Certainly a player that would have had potential in this program
had she stuck around. Reagan Wilson, Lily Tololay, and Ily Tanky, all players who probably didn't
have a massive future as rotation players at Iowa State. None of those two shocking,
but it's the Addy Brown news that really, really hits home. She's a fan favorite
in one of the best players in school history and now Addy Brown leaves for another program most
likely having not personally underachieved but the team underachieved in her three years at Iowa State.
Just one tournament win over the first three years of the Brown and Crooks era and Iowa State's
coaching staff will have some questions they'll have some holes to plug and hopefully there's not
more to come, but that's why I waited so late to record this is we didn't know how much news
is going to come. It's about 8.30 right now. We'll continue to keep you updated. We've got a
transfer portal tracker on our front page at Cyclone fanatic to see what else could happen in the
transfer portal for the cyclones. Of course, eventually that portal will show who's coming into
Iowa State's program as well. They will have a team next year, but it's certainly appearing that
it's going to look different after an early exit to Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA
tournament. We had pro day today for Iowa State football. A lot of former cyclones are still
cyclones who are entering the NFL draft got to display their skills and we talked to a couple of
them Tyler Miller being one of them and he's been training in state college the past couple of
months. He actually got married. Miller could very well find himself in an NFL camp, but what I want
to talk about is Austin Barrett. We just talked about the women's basketball team and the Exodus
that they are having right now. It feels really similar to what the football team went through.
When Matt Campbell moved on to state college and Jimmy Rogers got hired, so many players entered
the transfer portal, felt like the entire roster did, but it wasn't the entire roster. Austin Barrett's
coming back and he explains his decision to stay names. I never ended the portal and that was
the best decision for me. I think I was looking for a fair chance for you know a fighting chance to
get playing time and secure a starting spot and earn something. I haven't had that in my career yet.
As far as having a starting spot, I never started getting my career, but I think by the other
coaches telling you the new coaching staff what kind of guy I am and how I work, they sold me
out not making me empty promises but telling me that I'll have a fighting chance at playing time
and whatever I want to go earn. That was a huge part of it because you can go look anywhere
you want nowadays. You don't have to be in the portal. You got ages. I don't have an agent. You
can have agents reach out to anybody and that's fine, but I know what Iowa State is and I love
the community of games and fans of games and it was easy to come back to this place. It's
a place of awesome. Barrett also talked a lot about the relationship building that's going on
through this team. Everybody knows everybody's name at this point according to one player that I
talked to and that's been good for Jimmy Rogers to see. Rogers talks more about the team building
process as they get started with the Spring Football on Thursday. Watching the players connect
with one another, watching them struggle together and then get better incrementally through what we
did with them through the strength and conditioning to when we ran into the gauntlet days, watching
that growth of players becoming a team, it got better and better and then you know we ended on
Spring Break and now they're back and just excited to get going. Some more good news for Iowa
State fans. April 25th will be Iowa State's Spring Showcase as they wrap up the Spring Football
season. Roger says it'll mostly be a practice. There could be some scrimmages mixed in there,
but it will be an opportunity for fans to get to see the Jimmy Rogers era on half display at
Jack Tray Stadium. That is April 25th. We'll get you up to date as that gets closer, but we're not
moving on to football just yet because the Iowa State Cyclones are two wins away from their first
final four since 1944, but in order to get to the final four, you got to get to the elite eight.
Iowa State has a tough matchup with Tennessee on Friday night at 910 on TBS in Chicago. I leave
tomorrow morning. We'll talk to the team at the hotel and then of course we'll talk to the team
on Thursday in the locker room and we'll get you up to speed on Tennessee. But right now I want
to focus on three keys for Iowa State to take on Tennessee. In number one, there's no doubt that
it is rebounding, rebounding, rebounding, rebounding. That is what's going on at practice right now
for Iowa State. Tennessee is the number one offensive rebounding team in the country. They rebound
25% of their misses. That is a high, high rate. And we know that Iowa State sometimes has struggled
with rebounding this year. Sometimes that comes down to a physicality standpoint. Sometimes it
comes down to an out of position problem. But either way, it's going to be a massive challenge
for Iowa State. Here's what I like about it though. Blake Buchanan has rose to the occasion time
and time again against these high level opponents. Houston and Hilton call Sam. I thought Buchanan was
great. Both games against Arizona. Buchanan was awesome. Floyd Badunga in town. Buchanan rose to
the occasion. Buchanan will have to rise to the occasion on Friday night because regardless of
the status of Joshua Jefferson, he could play. He could not play. He's probably not going to be 100%
and if he's down low at 70% at 75% going against a team the size of Kentucky will be really,
really hard. A lot is going to be asked to be Buchanan. A lot will be asked to be of play to those
guys have to stay at a foul trouble. And of course, get some help from Nate Heise, Killing Torrey,
Tame and Lipsy. Guys who are really good at crashing the boards. My other key, those guys I just
mentioned, lock down Jacobi Gillespie. Gillespie, when when he's rolling Tennessee is absolutely at
their best. When he struggles, they struggle. If Gillespie doesn't score 15 points, Tennessee is just
six and six this year. Gillespie, really efficient, but he can be prone to turning the ball over a
little bit. He's a smaller guy. Iowa State will be sending two at him a lot. Tame and Lipsy,
Killing Torrey, go make his life difficult. Go and do what you did to Kentucky. And while I think
Gillespie is better than those Kentucky guards, no doubt, Tennessee doesn't have a ton of guards.
So if Iowa State can take Gillespie out of the game, it is going to be really tough to get the ball
to Nate a meant who is a freshman who's no doubt really talented, but could maybe be fostered
a little bit by Iowa State's physicality. It comes down to the cyclones doing what they do best
and that is rattling the other team. Tennessee turns the ball over a lot. They were nearly last
in the SEC in turnover percentage. If Iowa State can force some turnovers, get out and run.
That makes Iowa State's life a lot easier in the half court, which brings me to my next key.
You got to hit some shots. They didn't shoot that well against Kentucky and still blew them out.
The recipe for Iowa State to lose at this point. I don't think it's them not playing hard
because I don't see that happening. We've now seen five games in a row.
Honestly, give me seven games in a row dating back to that game at Arizona into
Sun. When I was take up blown off the floor, I thought they competed the best they had all season.
That carried over into the second half on senior day and then it carried over into every single
minute in Kansas City and every single minute in St. Louis. As long as Iowa State continues to do
that, they will have a puncher's chance in all of these games. The only way they don't
as if you start another game like you did against Kentucky and don't get out of that rut.
Or if you shoot the way you did at Arizona, it's going to come down to Meal and Mum Chillovich
having a good day. You don't need an amazing day from them. Although you'd take it,
that would be the best way to punch your ticket to an elite eight. But you just need a good day
out of Meal and can you get you a four, five, six, three's? Can Bateman add something? He saw
a logo three go down at the end of that Kentucky game. Maybe that gives him the confidence he needs
after a rough first half and then Torrey, Tayman, Heisee. I think the number out of those guys
can they get you three threes. Just between between the three of them. You don't need
Tayman to have four. You don't need Heisee to have four. If those guys can get anywhere between
three and five threes between the three of them, Iowa State's offense and the half court will be
in a really good spot to potentially play Michigan or Alabama with the spot in the final four
on the line. Well, in Indianapolis, the cyclones will be playing in Chicago. We'll get you up
to speed with the daily clone on Wednesday. You won't want to miss it. We've got Williams and
Bloom coming your way Wednesday morning. Let him cook has a new episode out on Cyclone Phenatic
right now. We'll also have the beat reporters coming your way on Wednesday evening. Thank you
