2:06What's up everybody? Welcome into another edition of Crush City Territory. I'm Chandler Roondrome by Tyler Stafford. After the Ashers have played just two awful baseball games against the white socks. Winning one, losing the other. The one they won, they walked 10 matters and the white socks stranded 14 bass runners, but somehow the Ashers came out with a 63 victory. And then in the second game, the Ashers got three hits. They pieced together a pitching plan that included Ronel Blanco, Kiway Dung, and Tetsuya Imi. And somehow the big three. And when you really think about it, it saved their pitching staff because they only had to use those three guys. And if we're going on precedent, we'll see Tetsuya Imi again in 11 days. But that was a game Tuesday that they were going to struggle to win just going in. Just with the lack of pitching they had, their bullpen. I think if they would have gotten a lead in the night thinning, Josh Hader was available. But no one else was. And they were only going to use a certain amount of guys.

3:10The three guys you saw pitch on Tuesday, they were going to pitch no matter what. So I know there was some hand ringing about the order and who came in when it didn't matter. Like those three guys were going to pitch all of the innings of that game no matter what. And to be honest, they did a decent job. They only allowed five runs. Tetsuya Imi allowed three or two, excuse me, Kiway Dung allowed three. Ronel Blanco was for a guy that allowed 10 earn runs in his last start and triple A. It was four scoreless settings. It wasn't pretty how it happened, but it was four scoreless settings. So the actors just needed to kind of reset their pitching staff. They needed to kind of reset everything. And I know you they were not punting Tuesday's game. Don't get me wrong. But sometimes you need a game just to kind of see the forest through the trees and kind of settle things down. That's what Tuesday was. Yeah. Yeah, all in all, I think. I mean, you had a shot to win the game. It was not an unwinnable game. And that's about all you can ask for there.

4:12Can you can you remind me what are the bonus things in EMI's contract in the innings? I see some chatter of that online. Yeah, that's become the new thing. That and like why isn't Joey Loefer Fido hitting fourth every day for the big league team? I think that's the two. That's the two things people are yelling at me the most about. So to see my his contract calls for $2 million raise for next season when he reaches each of 80, 90, and 100 innings pitched. So if he reaches 80 innings pitched, he gets an extra $2 million tacked on the next season salary. On top of the like 18 or whatever. Right. So his so so if he opts into his contract, which at this point seems a foregone conclusion, it's an $18 million base salary. That's what he's making this year. It's like okay. The contract he signed was essentially three years, $18 million per year,

5:13with the opportunity to escalate to 64 million based off innings pitched. So if essentially if he throws 100 innings this year, his base salary next year, presuming he opts in will go up to $24 million because it's he'll get $6 million in total bonuses. It's $2 million once he reaches 80 innings, $2 million more dollars once he reaches 90 innings, and $2 million more dollars once he reaches 100 innings. And this is not a mutual out this is a player option. It's a player option. Yes, it's a player off. Okay, real quick. If I'm thinking logically here, and I'm giving a player an option to opt into an $18 million contract, and then it goes up to 24th, they hit 100 innings, correct? That's threshold. Okay, so here's my problem is if I am writing a contract,

6:14and my guy throws 100 innings, and is bad enough in 100 innings, that he would rather take a $24 million contract the next year, that seems like a really bad contract, right? Like from whose perspective from the agents perspective from the teams from the yeah, from the Astros perspective, like 18, whatever, if it's, we're trying to get you over here, we'll give you 18 million a year. We're assuming you're going to opt out after year one, but if not great, we'll have you at 18, and that's not the end of the way. I mean, it's still a lot of money, but 24, like that's, that seems like a bad contract, even regardless of what you might end up doing this year, just logically, if somebody throws 100 innings, and there would rather take 24 on your team, like you know that that's going to be a bad contract.

7:15Well, I guess the thought would have been, and look, this is, this is gone about as poorly as it can go, from a, from what you thought this contract was going to be to what it is. Like, I mean, when they signed him, the thought was, all right, this is a, this is a, this is fair, because like if he throws 100 innings and is great, then like, okay, great, like it'll be, the point would be to opt out would be to go find a longer term deal, because only having, you know, two more, one more guaranteed year, that would be the point of opting out. If you were good, if he had pitched well, and he had gotten 100 innings and had a three ERA, it would have been very easy, like opt out, and then the contract's null and void, like he's going to go sign another contract, like you wouldn't have to worry about this. The other part would have been if he was very bad, and, or got injured, and like, wasn't able to reach the innings threshold, and okay, like it's $18 million next year, it's not terrible, it's not going to torpedo your payroll, but it's still something. They've now reached the point

8:19where he's been healthy all season, and he's just not been pitchable. So, look, I know the, I know the convenient narrative, the, the thing that all the engagement farmers want you to retweet and share on their various social media platforms is that the Ashers are cheap, and they're not going to pay him, that's why they're not pitching him. Am I saying that that's completely unreasonable? No. Do I think that is the driving force behind this? I do not. I think that's so you, EMI, is unreliable. He has shown himself to not be trustworthy. He has shown himself to not be able to throw strikes. He did not throw strikes last night. He didn't pitch particularly well last night, coming in in of the lowest leverage spot you can. Like, I mean, there were down four runs, our three runs when he came in. He knew he was wearing the rest of the game, and still, I mean, he walked three guys, give up a two run homer. If not for Cam Smith would have given up another homer. The reason he's not pitching is because he's, he's not reliable. He's, he's not, he's not

9:23pitched well. He's not shown himself to be able to pitch well. And the other thing that I keep coming back to, they know that they're going to be on the hook for eight, you're already, they're on the hook for 18 million dollars next year. Like, I would be very surprised if he doesn't opt into this contract. What's an extra two million dollars more? Like, I mean, and with what you have coming off the payroll, you have Brian Abray, you coming off who's making six. You have, you know, other guys coming off in free agency and you may trade Jeremy Paine, who's making close to 10 million. Like, I don't think this is not a situation where they're being cheap and they don't want to pay him two million. He's in the back of some people's minds. I'm sure it is, but the, that is not the main reason he's not pitching. The main reason he's not pitching is because they don't want to pitch him in games that they are tied or leading. And they don't play enough blowouts to put him in to just wear and be a long relief mop up guys. So it has resulted in this where Tetsu Yimae is

10:26throwing 70 and 2 thirds innings now this season after throwing three innings last night. I don't see how they're going to be able to get through the rest of the season without him throwing nine and a third more innings. So it looks to me like the 80 innings will hit and it'll be the extra two million. I don't see how he gets to 90. I don't see how he gets to 90 within the next month, but who knows? Maybe they get in a dire streets and they have to do something, but I mean, they've been in dire straits for a while now and still haven't pitched him. 13:30you know, maybe they are mindful of the CBT and they don't want that that money to go up and that salary to go up. But no, it's for next season. And yeah, there could not even be a next season. We don't know what the salary structure could look like. This could all be moot by next season. So I push back against the notion that this is totally contract incentives based. But it should be noted in any more, if you didn't need it anymore, glaring obvious sign of their lack of faith in Tetsuya Yemi. Rurno Blanco started yesterday's game and he gave up 10 runs in his last start and triple A. But Mike Burrows was supposed to start on Tuesday. But as Joe Aspada said, he, Mike Burrows was playing catch on Monday, felt something bark in his shoulder and they sent him for imaging and he's got inflammation in his right shoulder. So that is why he did not start the game on Wednesday. That was the plan was for on Tuesday. Excuse me. That was the plan for Mike Burrows to start the game

14:31on Tuesday. But that did not happen. And so Burrows is day to day. I have stopped his throwing program. So I don't know when, when or if he will be back. But we did get news on somebody that could be back sooner rather than later in that's Carlos Correa who went to the doctor on Tuesday and was cleared to essentially do everything. It's cleared to do all baseball activities. He is going ahead to the team spring training complex in West Palm Beach sometime this week where he will face live pitching where he will run the bases and start to slide. And those are the only three things he has not done yet. He's done every other baseball activities fielded ground balls. He's running a straight line. He's hit off pitching machines. He's hit off tease and everything like that. The only two things he really has not done is face live pitching and run the bases and slide. So he's going to go do that in West Palm. They have what's called bridge games at the complex. It's basically a bridge

15:34between the complex league and the instructional league. That's where a lot of these prospects. A lot of the kids are playing in these games. Correa will get into some of those games so he can get live at bat so he can simulate game situations so he can run around and have to maybe slide, change directions, things like that. But Tyler it's it's really looking like Carlos Correa is going to be a factor of the last you know maybe two weeks of this season. I cannot believe that. I'm so excited. Just hang on to to this lead, get him back in there and oh that that is going to be so fun. I am I will worry about your surplus later and what the line up looks like but that is that is exciting. I cannot believe that. I mean that just did not cross my mind that that was even a possibility. I was just hoping he would be able to hang out around the team for this playoff push and the idea of him being able to play is crazy and look I

16:42it's got to be the Z-cliner. That's that's what the commercials have told me. That's that fixed this foot way to go. So Correa said on Tuesday he's sprinting at about 95% efficacy effort level which is I mean that's that's good to hear for what how do you tell that what is 95% there's a machine they did they did you want I mean are you watching the broadcast like you see it? He's wearing right. That's a that's a catapult device that tracks everything that tracks top speed that tracks exertion level like they can boil this down to a side like Correa I was me that I was like how harder you sprinting is I got to 95 on the machine and yeah like they have a machine that can tell you everything about efficacy level effort all that so that's where Correa is he said he is not taking ground balls anywhere but third base he said he he strongly hinted that he does not want to come back as a DH only for no other reason then quote I don't think I'm a better DH than Yordon

17:48Correa said which can't I can't argue can't argue that I tried my best to see what the infield configuration would look like if this happens Joe Spada was not having it so we we will move on and we will wait until Correa goes to West Palm as far as I know everyone's going to want a timeline um Correa said he's going to spend about a week week and a half in West Palm he did say that he is going to need a rehab assignment in addition to this now my gut tells me that that could maybe not be a thing because we are seeing like Aaron judge doesn't want to go on a rehab assignment um just bigger players don't go on rehab assignments now he's going to play in bridge games in West Palm and get in the games there like that could serve as his rehab assignment but he I brought that up to him yesterday and he basically said no I'm going to also need a rehab assignment after this now I don't want everyone to you know adhere behold this timeline but

18:56the minor league regular season triple A's regular season ends on September 20th which is seven days before the Astros ends and it's conveniently uh that's a Sunday the Astros are off Monday the 21st and then they start their final road trip of the season their final six games of the season on the 22nd in Seattle against the Marineries it would stand to reason that presuming Correa comes out of everything okay the next you know week week and a half and he's ready to go play in minor league rehab games and if it lines up he could maybe go to triple A to be there for the last series or so of their season fly to Seattle join the team for the last road trip of the year again that is not something that I've been told officially that's not something that's even been whispered to me I'm just putting two and two together looking at the calendar looking when the minor league season ends looking where the Astros will be that would make some sense but again there's a lot that still has to clear like everyone is still speaking and very guarded

23:02second interview Dana Brown has done since his dismissal as the asher's jam he didn't want an MLB network radio this weekend with Dan du Kett and Jim Bowden Jim Bowden who Dana Brown once worked for Dana Dana was Jim Bowden scouting director in I believe DC I think they may have also worked somewhere else so they're tight so that that helped facilitate that but Tyler before we get into some of these like specific clips I think what's shown through in these last two interviews Dana's done and again no one wants to hear this I completely get it to bottom line business but this is a good dude like he I will give AJ and Cratchy a lot of credit like they gave Dana every opportunity to bash some people to bash Jim Crane to bash Jeff Bagwell to bash how this was handled and everything and he took the high road of high roads at all times and I think it is noble that he is acting like this we said it after the deadline when he basically went

24:08up there and said like I wasn't going to trade away the farm because I think it's the ethical thing to do now what he's been allowed to do that with what we know now probably not but still this is a this is a good man this is a good guy who handled himself very well and it's pretty it's a class he's a classic individual yeah I think that is fair they're certainly opportunities to be upset and to say you know you can't blame me for anything because I wasn't allowed to do what I would like but you know that that does not seem to be his his ML so yeah I mean everything that we have heard about Dana and like he said from people around the league he is very well liked and respected just didn't work out here so hopefully he bounces back soon so here's the first here's the first thing I found interesting well this is Dana talking about how he was informed by owner

25:14Jim Crane that he would not be retained as the asher general manager so here's Dana Brown on his final meeting with asher's owner Jim Crane look at the day you know we set down it was probably about five minutes it was a conversation and it's just as quick as it started I think you know the frustration of the homestand you know we came in up by two games then you know we had a homestand where we lost you know six out of the nine games that we played so we went three and six and so I think that was part of some of the frustration and but ultimately it was a you know five minute conversation and it was over I think you know both Jim Crane is he was great to work for he changed my life in terms of giving me the opportunity that only seven African Americans to walk the face in his earth ever had a chance to do he's a successful owner he's been around for a long time you know the big thing is I think you know from twenty from 2017 to 2022 this team was dominant right

26:19and so you go from dominance to just the normal good baseball team that have to fight your way in every year and you know without signing you know a ton of the free agents that end up walking and you know those kind of things happen and you're just a good normal team that have to fight your way in every year and I think that's the difference that's the transition the transition is you go from that dominant portion of being dominant from 2017 to 2022 when I came in people forget in 2023 we won it was game 161 that we got into the postseason 162 we actually won the division that's one year after you know the the world's here so the team was obviously different and so we got to 161 wins we've got a walk walk car spot in 2023 and then we got to 162 games we wanted division that day then in next year we wanted division with like four games despair in 2024 we ran into

27:23school boom we wrapped right and then last year 25 it was you know a ton of injuries lose the tiebreaker and you go home with 87 wins so look I felt like I had a good run here I felt like I did a really good job and you know it's over but I'm not embarrassed by the work I did I wasn't perfect you know I didn't you know all my decisions were not perfect and I think that's in baseball that's the reality of it but make no mistake my crew and I we did a bang up job and you know we we kept this team in the postseason and but now it's over yeah I think I thought that was about as appropriate a way to put it I mean Dane is not going to go on there and and say we did a terrible job but I thought he accepted responsibility for the things that he felt felt short but also wasn't going to beat himself up I know the five minute thing with Jim

28:25Crane kind of caught some eyebrows but I'm not like if you're going to fire someone yeah I was going to say how long did you expect that conversation to be right it's it's a tough it's a tough deal unless they were going to just sit there and rehash everything that he did wrong but yeah I mean but I think again he was given many opportunities to say some different things then he did and he took the high road and was above board but I guess would you agree with him I mean he said nothing to be embarrassed about he said he thinks he and his crew did a bang up job and he kind of detailed I think what he said without saying it was basically like when I got here things were already kind of on the decline if you're there already on the back end of of this golden era but what Dana could not do and whether it was totally his fault or not what he could not do is keep that era kind of going for longer yeah I mean in 2023 Jose Bray you played 141 games at first base

29:32you know it was a very different looking team he still had quite a bit of the you know Braggmo's Air Pena obviously Althoove had a good season Yordon Kyle Tucker like and then you also had Fraunberg you know that was the year that they went and got Ferlander again so yeah it started worse than the golden years but that is not it's not like the team was just decimated when he took over I mean yeah I think the parts that you can point to that didn't go well or some of the just the acquisitions that were made outside of the Kyle Tucker trade which again was not necessarily the idea from him or you know what you would want to do you'd

30:35rather keep Kyle Tucker on your team but I think that has been successful for trading one year of Kyle Tucker getting all of these years of the three players that he got back but you know the top draft picks other than last season really have not panned out that happened sometimes but it's not as if like every decision went right which you're never going to point to but there were opportunities to have the team be better than what it was which again is always true and there's always revolving doors of every trade and every free agent signing and all of that kind of so you know they had a trade for Nolan Aranato and then that you know there's a million butterfly effects that you can point to but they they will objectively were not good enough the last two seasons and

31:37I that's that's what led to the decision being made I think the one thing that maybe can be directed at Dana but as I think you'll hear maybe shouldn't be as much is you know the one thing that Dana came in with guns ablazing and and real adamant about was that they were going to extend players was that they were going to lock up the young core you know he went on the radio and said that Kyle Tucker would be an astro for life they tried with Pania you can debate on how much they tried with Hunter Brown from what I understand there was not really much of an effort there and we'll hear from Dana a little bit about that but I do think the one thing that that Dana I think if he had to do it over again and this is kind of a larger broader topic here I think if he had to do it over again he would have probably come in at the beginning of his tenure not as bold not as braggadocious not as saying like we're going to do this we're going to get them all

32:40locked up and you just wait we're going to be like the briefs because that's fairly or unfairly that is what he came in professing and that is what everyone kind of thought and you know Jim crane mentioned it a little bit when he hired him just about how the braves had done a great job of basically signing all of their young guys and their core to eight nine year extensions and when you look at it Dana Brown signed two extensions it was Christian Javier's who is not age well and it was Jose Al-Tuves who I mean that's what you have to do he's the face of the franchise and he's going to retire here like I understand why they did it the logic was perfectly sound but again it's going to be one of those contracts that I don't know how well it's going to end up in the last year or two of it so the failure to get anything done with Hunter Brown Jeremy Paine Fraber Valdez you know Kyle Tucker especially after going on the radio and saying Kyle Tucker is going to be an astro for life again I think Dana had some things to iron out just from being a

33:46front facing member of an organization being a guy that's words carry a lot of weight and I think by the end of his tenure he had figured that out and he had kind of understood that you can't just go out and talk like a scout and talk like kind of the this is how the I mean you talk to Dana Brown this is how scouts talk like that is just him you can't really do that every time you're speaking as a general manager because fairly you're unfairly it gets tied to you and when you don't get it done even if there's some things out of your control it reflects bad on you yeah but that's probably why he got the job right I mean that he probably got the job by saying I want to make this team look like the braves because Jim Krain has talked I mean even even now in the decisions that have been made he talked about looking at these smaller budget teams that are able to have success and sustained success and I would imagine that was a similar thought that he had

34:48when he hired Dana Brown and it's how do I maximize my money okay look at these teams I mean the braves you know it it has not worked out for them in the same way that they would have liked it too so far from injuries and underperformance and you know all that kind of stuff but when when all of those contracts are being signed it was like watch the the braves are making a 10-year dynasty and that's when Brown was hired so I would I mean yeah I agree there's probably some ways that you could phrase it better but he was almost certainly brought in with the understanding that this is value that you bring to being a general manager you're going to figure out a way to do it here so even if he didn't voice it like that had to have been an expectation that Krain had for Dana Brown to do coming into this 10-year that's that's why you hired him but then on the other hand as we're about to hear it sounds like Jim Krain was not going to soften

35:52some of his restrictions some of the things that he has kind of shown that he is not willing to do while he's in charge in terms of contract length in terms of contract value and it's one of these things we talked about a couple of episodes ago when we talked about Jim Krain's comments after firing Dana Brown like essentially can you keep doing it like this and he didn't say yes or no but did say that they were going to make some adjustments so let's hear from Dana Brown about these failed extension attempts about the inability to sign guys to extensions and let's hear what he has to say and relation to how Jim Krain kind of played in all this as well. We made attempts to to sign both guys right and so and that's where I would leave it and then you know some of the other guys that have walked out in the past you know like we've allowed some star players to walk out in the past and and and and that's what it is I mean I mean we don't do long deals here I have high high respect for for Jim Krain he's been a successful

36:56owner and you know he didn't like doing bad deals and I and I get it and I'm right there with him and I'm on board with him and so sometimes guys are going to end up walking it is what it is but you got to you know continue to remain competitive continue to sign good players and I felt like you know we continue to be competitive and we continue to make adjustments and try to do everything we can do to make the teams better and you know do you do you win every decision that you make no you know we signed the mind this offseason I felt really good about him I a lot of people felt good about him I you know he didn't perform as as well as we would have liked him to perform and so you know that's you know that that goes with the with the territory I mean that's part of what happens you don't nail all of your signage and so I think the team still competitive in the narrowest place by two games and you know we worked hard to continue it. 39:07an entire amateur scouting staff he was seeing overseeing a pro scouting staff like Dana may have been you know looped in on a couple slack messages and some conversations but to suggest that he was in any way like a big factor or a big figurehead in these braves extensions is just wrong and that's a failure on in the hiring process if you believed that that was something that he had experienced and something he could do so I didn't want to say that as well too because that is that was always the thing throughout Dana's tenure that really kind of puzzled me was that everyone always a so could because he worked there everyone always associated the two when and I'm just going to tell you like in most organizations the vice president is scouting no matter how high you've ascended the organ no matter how many years you've had in baseball like they don't get involved in this kind of stuff and in Atlanta you know Dana Torta Dana in various ways has said like those were not his deals those were not things that he wanted or necessarily like had a bunch
