The initial draft, penned primarily by Thomas Jefferson, underwent significant editing by the committee, including the removal of a passage condemning slavery due to opposition from Southern delegates. Despite this omission, the Declaration's assertion of equality remained, foreshadowing future struggles over slavery. Following heated debate, the resolution for independence passed on July 2nd, with final adoption and signing occurring on July 4th, 1776.
