We're talking about Ben Powers as NFL free A&C approaches.
0:39
Will the Broncos embrace the youth movement?
0:41
We'll talk about how the Broncos might be nearing
0:43
their decision here on Ben Powers
0:45
and why that could be coming sooner rather than later,
0:47
especially with the cost of that end.
0:50
Whether or not Denver will look at the cost effective approach
0:53
at left guard considering they've paid Garrett Bulls,
0:55
Luke Wattenberg, Quinn Miners,
0:57
and Mike McGlinchee's cap hit being where it is
1:00
could cost effective be the way here's the Broncos
1:02
look to maximize all things for their offense
1:04
and why that cost effective approach
1:05
could be Alex Poucheski.
1:07
So let's get into this here.
1:08
I've seen with NFL free A&C beginning on March 11th,
1:12
ideally as the Broncos go into that day
1:14
and if they want to be aggressive like they say they do,
1:17
they're gonna have to make some changes between now
1:19
and then we're talking about restructures.
1:21
We're talking about potential roster cuts, so to speak.
1:24
So what do the Broncos do here?
1:26
When it comes to Ben Powers, who in my opinion
1:29
last year at left guard, he ended up becoming
1:32
a very valuable asset to the offense
1:34
and specifically the Broncos run game.
1:36
And as many shows as we have done here
1:38
talking about how frustrating the Broncos inconsistency
1:41
in the run game is that didn't have as much to do
1:44
with the offensive line more so than I think it did
1:46
with play calling, flow of game development
1:49
based on how the defense was playing.
1:50
But let's look at the first five weeks of the season here
1:54
for Denver, specifically one thing you saw on film
1:57
when it came to Ben Powers and the Philadelphia Eagles game
2:00
was a great example.
2:01
You look back as well as the Monday night football game
2:03
the week prior against the Cincinnati Bengals,
2:05
the Broncos, they love pulling Ben Powers from left to right
2:09
to be able to create open holes there for their running back.
2:12
And that's where JK Dobbins and his patients
2:14
as a runner really came into play here.
2:16
You saw that in Monday night football,
2:18
you saw that in week five and unfortunately after week five
2:21
he suffered that bicep injury he had surgery on that
2:25
and he missed a large portion of the season
2:27
didn't return till probably mid December just a few weeks
2:30
before the Broncos had their playoff run against the Buffalo
2:34
Bills and for Ben Powers, the reason why the Broncos
2:37
are facing this decision right now,
2:39
as it stands here today on Tuesday,
2:41
he's going to cost 18.1 million dollars
2:44
towards the salary cap next season
2:46
which is the third highest on the team right now
2:49
and he's on the last year of his deal, right?
2:51
If there were two or three more years remaining on his deal
2:55
we would be talking about a simple restructure
2:57
and in theory the Broncos could restructure this deal here
3:01
but it doesn't seem like the likely path that they take.
3:04
Now things could change but the Broncos,
3:06
if they maybe want to go with the cost effective approach
3:08
here at left guard, let's look at the big picture here.
3:11
Luke Wattenberg just got into a four year extension.
3:14
If they view him as the center and they don't view him
3:16
as a guy they want to kick to left guard, okay, that makes sense.
3:18
But the Broncos at this point could either extend Ben Powers
3:22
which in my opinion you want to keep continuity,
3:24
I think you do that, he's a proven guy, he's a vet,
3:26
get him to that second contract,
3:28
he has been durable minus the bicep injury
3:30
which was something that was beyond his control there
3:33
but he has been a durable lineman for you.
3:35
So I think that kind of plays into the favor
3:37
of what you want to do here.
3:38
However this is all aimed at maybe the Broncos
3:42
Now the Broncos cap space right now is around 20.9 million
3:46
according to spot track, you get different models
3:49
from things like over the cap as well.
3:51
If they were to release him so to speak
3:53
and not do a post June 1st designation
3:56
that would free up space.
3:58
That would jump them to about 28.4 million dollars in cap space.
4:01
They would incur a dead cap hit of 9.7 million dollars, right?
4:06
Obviously they want to pee away from the dead money narrative
4:09
because they just came off the Russell Wilson dead cap.
4:11
You don't want to add 9.7 to that.
4:13
You want to be as in the green as possible in that category.
4:16
But I talk about his value there as an offensive lineman
4:20
and what it meant to Denver's run game early on.
4:22
And certainly I think the loss of JK Dobbins,
4:26
the rotation so to speak of what we saw
4:29
with Ben Powers and Alex Pouchesky
4:31
when Powers initially returned from his injury.
4:34
You know, it messed with the continuity
4:36
on the offensive line a little bit.
4:37
Dobbins injury impacted things where RJ Harvey
4:40
had a little bit more of a workload on there.
4:42
I do feel like though, Jolimic Loflin had several big runs
4:47
I liked what we saw from him.
4:48
I liked some of the stuff we saw in space from RJ Harvey.
4:50
And that was when Ben Powers got a little bit more run
4:54
back into the starting lineup.
4:55
And then obviously in the playoffs, Denver's got to find a way
4:58
to run the ball more.
4:59
And if you want to go younger, I understand that.
5:01
Does that mean that you're going to lead to more run game success?
5:03
It doesn't necessarily guarantee that.
5:05
And that's where the dilemma is here, Broncos country.
5:07
So the ideal option I think from my perspective would be
5:12
Give them a two to three year contract extension
5:14
that lowers the cap paid obviously for you.
5:16
Keeps your offensive line continuity intact.
5:19
But if they release him, as I mentioned,
5:20
it frees up around $7 to $8 million in cash base, $9.7 million
5:27
But let's talk about cost effective approach.
5:29
That's what we're going to dive into here next on Lockdown
5:31
Broncos, including my outspout Chesky
5:33
might be the best option for that.

8:26
Alex Poucheski might be the Bronco's best cost effective approach
8:29
when it comes to addressing left guard.
8:31
If in fact, they do move on from Ben Powers here,
8:35
let's talk about what that looks like.
8:36
But first off, Alex Poucheski is the time
8:38
that we're sitting down.
8:39
We're talking about this.
8:41
Alex Poucheski is, in fact,
8:43
a restricted free agent here for the Broncos.
8:45
I would expect them to place a tender on Poucheski
8:48
because of what he's proven since coming in the NFL.
8:51
Obviously, when he signed as Nundrat,
8:53
the rookie for agent, they gave him one of the larger signing bonuses.
8:56
He's got so much experience in terms of playing games
8:59
at the college level where he's near Bonix
9:01
in that category of college games played,
9:03
but also think the most college starts
9:05
by an offensive tackle in NCAA history,
9:07
something along those lines.
9:09
So he goes through his rookie season in the NFL
9:12
and doesn't see much playing time with Denver, right?
9:14
He spent a majority of the year on injured reserve,
9:16
even though he necessarily wasn't injured.
9:18
He suffered an injury in the preseason,
9:20
but in 2024, we saw him play a little bit more.
9:24
Have some roles here and then where he has to fill in,
9:27
especially after Mike McGlinch,
9:28
he went down with an ankle injury
9:30
and they missed him for some time, four weeks on IR.
9:33
He did a really good job.
9:34
He held his own against some really good pass horses
9:37
Sean Peyton classified him specifically as,
9:39
he's a right side guy only.
9:41
That changed in 2025 after Ben Powers injury.
9:44
Now it wasn't necessarily Poucheski being the first man up
9:47
after the injury there to Ben Powers.
9:51
Matt Parrot in his first game suffered an injury
9:53
that ended his season against the New York Jets
9:55
and then it forced the Broncos
9:57
with their offensive line depth as is
9:59
to move Poucheski from a right side player
10:02
to having to play left guard.
10:03
And I would say he impressed the Broncos coaching staff
10:07
And if you watch him on film,
10:08
there are a lot of things to like about Poucheski
10:11
and the growth and the step that he took
10:13
having to play a position.
10:15
He never even got time at realistically on the left side
10:18
during the preseason.
10:19
He saw some time at right guard,
10:21
but it's just being able to translate that over
10:23
to the left side position.
10:24
You have all these different rules inside of Zach Street's
10:26
blocking scheme here,
10:27
which could change this upcoming season for the Broncos.
10:29
But Poucheski proved to be more
10:31
than serviceable at that point.
10:33
Even when Ben Powers was ready,
10:34
they were giving a majority of the reps
10:36
even though they were rotating to Poucheski.
10:38
He is, in my opinion,
10:40
if the Broncos want to go cost effective
10:42
while you have Vonix on a rookie deal.
10:44
And if you want to go out there and free A&C this year
10:45
and spend money on running back,
10:47
linebacker, tied in, or even wide receiver,
10:50
this is the move to make here
10:51
where you're going all in with Poucheski
10:54
and you're hoping that maybe Nick Garjulo
10:56
can be ready to play at some point this season
10:58
be a depth option for you here.
11:00
And that allows Frank Krum to stay in that tackle eligible role
11:03
where he's reporting as eligible.
11:04
And obviously we saw him catch a touchdown in the playoffs.
11:06
But Poucheski was that guy before Pert Gott injured
11:11
and then because of that had to slide over.
11:12
And then he ended up losing that spot.
11:14
The Frank Krum once Ben Powers came back
11:16
because Frank Krum was getting a majority of the reps there
11:19
even though Poucho knew what that role was.
11:22
In my opinion, I like what I saw
11:24
from Poucheski and the sample size
11:25
that we saw last season at left guard.
11:27
And I think one specific game
11:29
granted it was against the Dallas Cowboys defense.
11:31
But all Broncos country to go back to that.
11:33
I encourage you, please get NFL pro
11:35
and go to watch the film where you can see the all 22.
11:38
You can see the different angles.
11:39
The Dallas Cowboys match up
11:41
where we saw RJ Harvey bounce off
11:43
for a touchdown off the left side.
11:46
Watch Poucheski, look,
11:47
Quinn Miner was doing damage
11:48
from the right guard spot,
11:49
but Poucheski did a really great job
11:51
of attacking the double team there initially
11:53
working up to the play side linebacker,
11:55
getting up to that second level
11:57
and then burying a guy deep into the third level
11:59
in terms of blocking that sprung RJ Harvey open
12:02
I think Poucheski's knowledge of this offense,
12:05
him having time on task at a position
12:07
he previously never played and excelling at it
12:10
is a gamble here for Sean Payton,
12:13
Davis Webb and the Broncos.
12:15
But I also think it's a worthwhile gamble
12:17
for them to potentially take a look at.
12:19
And then obviously in this year's NFL draft,
12:21
if Denver wants to look at that position long-term,
12:24
you have the opportunity to draft guys.
12:26
Heck and free agency,
12:27
if you wanted to sign a veteran late in that third wave
12:30
that can come in and be that solidified support depth
12:33
or a guy who could potentially compete to start
12:35
with Poucheski at this position,
12:37
go ahead and do that.
12:38
But I'm saying if the Broncos want to make big splashes
12:41
elsewhere, they either have to extend Ben Powers,
12:44
which is not necessarily on Power's timeline,
12:46
both sides have to be in agreement on that.
12:49
Maybe this is the way where you go to Poucheski approach
12:51
by tendering him and then you go out
12:53
and you sign a veteran guy,
12:54
you have some competition,
12:55
but then you kind of go the cost-effective approach
12:58
of addressing that left guard position on your offensive line.
13:01
And does that mean that,
13:02
hey, just because you take the cost-effective approach,
13:04
it means that your offensive line is gonna take a step back?
13:06
No, not necessarily.
13:07
I mean, it's a gamble and it's a risk
13:09
that I think is worthwhile for the Broncos
13:11
to at least look at and see what it can do for them.
13:14
This doesn't even take you away from going out
13:16
as well on the NFL draft and adding guys at this position
13:19
where you think a lot of the interior offensive lineman
13:22
this year could be a little bit more of a premium position
13:24
as the Broncos look to keep this unit as they believe
13:27
as they look and George Payton and Sean Payton
13:29
have openly said, going back to the NFL combine,
13:32
we always have to take a look at our offensive line
13:35
and our defensive line.
13:36
It always starts in the trenches.
13:38
And with obviously Garrett Bulls being at his age,
13:40
even though he just got a contract extension,
13:42
Mike McGlinchee, him there in the end of his contract
13:44
in the next couple of years, you just extended Quinn,
13:47
you just extended Luke, okay, you have continuity there,
13:50
but you need to address the depth there.
13:52
You need to address beyond maybe if these guys go elsewhere
13:55
or if someone decides to suddenly retire,
13:58
you have to at least have a plan in place
14:00
and let a guy maybe build and develop in your system.
14:03
Then when that happens, they can step in
14:05
and you're not having as much, I would say, turnover,
14:09
And you have guys that know the offense,
14:11
that know the system that can execute it.
14:13
And maybe that transition plan isn't as scary
14:17
that I think as we all think about in theory,
14:19
like what happens if the Broncos
14:20
were to move on from Mike McGlinchee?
14:21
What happens if Garrett Bulls or them suddenly
14:24
Although I don't think that's gonna be the case
14:26
would Garrett, he's indicated he wants to play
14:28
at least another five or seven years.
14:29
Maybe he can, but the Broncos,
14:32
the smart business move here would be to say,
14:34
hey, we need to address really good depth,
14:36
but we also maybe need to look at an in-house transition plan
14:39
that maybe a couple years down the road,
14:41
this guy's gonna be ready to step into this role and play.
14:44
Maybe that is already the approach, maybe that's a thought
14:46
they have with Poucheski,
14:47
and that's just based on conversations
14:49
I've had with people looking at what we saw
14:51
from Poucheski last season.
14:53
This doesn't hurt the Broncos to take a chance
14:56
at something like this.
14:56
Now, Broncos Country, I wanna hear from you
14:58
here on today's episode of the show.
14:59
Let me know your thoughts on Alex Poucheski
15:02
as a potential cost-effective approach,
15:04
or not they should add a veteran,
15:05
if they in fact do decide to make a decision
15:07
to move on from Ben Powers.
15:09
But that will wrap up today's bonus episode
