Your team every day. On sedays show the hawks still have a roster crunch, but some of that was solved on Friday. We're going to what they did, what it means for the future, and more coming up. You are Lockdown hawks. You're daily Atlanta hawks podcast. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Every day. Hello, friends. Welcome to Episode, two, three, one, three of the Lockdown hawks podcast. I am your host Brad Rowling, comments. You want a Friday evening here in mid September, and I want to thank you as always for joining us here in motherf Hawks to make your first listen each day every day. Check out the podcast, tell your friends, and I appreciate you being here as always. For the last couple of months. I've been talking extensively about the hawks, having a roster crunch. Effectively they've had too many players for two few spots. They have 17 players So as of this morning for only 15 spots by the end, but the first domino has fallen

So I thought that's for a little while on the podcast because it was almost so much to say basically until things started to move But the first domino did take place earlier today on Friday the hawks have not actually said the pressure was out as I'm recording this podcast But I know it's gone for the league office Etc. The hawks are going to wave Devon Carter and that leaves them with 16 players left As a look back for some needed context here Devon Carter was acquired by the hawks in late June and what I would call an Opportunistic deal with sacrameno kings Well, it's not like the remaining roster crunch later on in the podcast But keep in mind that they added Carter before for agency happened So that was before they made the door trade before they went and don't coming up is gone for example For they took on Ryan M. Harb et cetera, et cetera all about happened after they had done this deal for Devon Carter And a very important piece of context here is that the hawks received a 2033 second round pick in the Carter trade and it's coming from the kings So the hawks were essentially paid compensated how do you want to put that to take on Devon Carter's 5.1 million dollar contract?

If the hawks had paid That pick to trade for Carter in late June and then turn around and waved him in September That would have been bad process. You don't want to give up capital to then wave a player that you haven't even seen play For your team yet, but because they received a pick this makes a lot more sense So if people have not talked about that and whatever media you consume on social that that's a very important caveat and distinction the hawks were compensated to take all on Devon Carter's contract Because that happened that's a huge part of the reason why I have I would say over and over again Referred to Carter as one of the guys that they might part ways with to deal with the inevitable roster crunch because they have until Mid-October to deal with it. They don't have to do that right now But along the way he was always maybe gonna be on the chopping block Not a definite I never thought I was gonna be definite. That was gonna be gonna be giving Devon Carter moving on But they had not shown the proactive step to wanting Devon Carter They took him on in that deal, but it was basically a value transaction. It turns out so by the way

I still like that move for the hawks even if you knew they were going to cut Carter Which by the way they did not know but taking him on for one year at $5.1 million and getting that second round pick from the Kings is totally normal NBA business That's totally fine to get paid a pick for five million dollars Not some crazy value anymore without being on the roster But it's totally five pieces of business and again they did this deal early enough where they I'm sure they thought Carter Was gonna be on the roster or always being trying to get at that point Also technically Carter has a fourth year option decision Do in the next month or so, but once he is waved on this deal That won't be an option pretty anybody else Oh, he got I guess you could be claimed by someone on this on the same contracts But it's more than $7 million and that was never going to happen with the hawks Even if they had kept him they were going to decline that option almost certainly It's you know, that's a big enough number given where he is right now in the league What is league wide value is at this moment that was a pretty clean decline probably but you know interestingly enough

I don't think Carter is the worst player on the roster. I really don't like he didn't have a great first two years in Sacramento But he was a lottery pick two years ago and the 24 draft and that wasn't a big reach or anything like he was projected to go Around that area an athletic combo guard with real defensive chops Some on ball juice as an offensive player offensively. He's not been great in NBA at all The shooting is a question mark for Devon Carter at this point and it may never work out for him That's definitely fair. I said that at the time of the trade in late June like it may not work for him offensively That's understandable But the reality is also that the hawks have I would say far less of a need for even a theoretical part of skill set for Carter Then they maybe thought they would when they got him like not that Lou dork and Devon Carter of the same player But part of Carter's appeal is his ball-hawking defensively and now they have Lou dork to do that more and Carter moves down the list of guys That they would kind of need to deploy to have that defensive punch on the perimeter Also Carter is as they will documented like pretty shaky shooter

That is magnified even more when you already have Dyson and then you throw in Lou dork like there's not almost a much room for another Shake you shoot on the perimeter of the roster also for example some like Ryan Nimhar who they brought in again after the Carter trade Might have a cleaner role as a third point guard type basically then Carter might have as like the you know Sixth guard or six perimeter player on the roster so Again, I'm not surprised at all if you follow the show closely this shouldn't be a surprise every time we talk about the roster crunch For the last two plus months. I have always mentioned Devon Carter as they have a ten-chal casualty of the roster crunch He was always one of the two of the most most likely guys to be waved if they just were to wave someone and Look on a recent show I brought this up But the hawks did a move at almost exact same time last summer when they tried to Kobe Bufkin in mid September Now that was a trade but they they're not afraid to move earlier than they have to if they like There's some reason to do that so My read on this and no one's told me this by the way to be very clear. This is pure speculation

This could have been a favor to Carter on some level. I'm not reporting that again But if the hawks were open with Carter and his agent that he may not make the team by the end Waving him now could actually do Carter a favor to have him go somewhere else He can kind of pick his own spot before training camp starts and have a fresh start and have a more chance to make a team somewhere Nothing that happened, but that was part of the reason why they traded Bufkin when they did last year Is it bucking head of kind of a chance to latch on somewhere else at that point in time? So the hawks are not gonna do that out of goodness of their heart I think this is certainly something that you would have do you would only do if you were kind of deciding He was the odd man out and you just knew it ahead of time They could have waited and they this could have gone all the way down to the wire in October and that would have been totally reasonable But if they thought they were going to weigh Devon Carter not crazy to go ahead and do it now basically Anyway from the hawks side it would have been awesome to flip Carter in a trade like I was asked by somebody today Like couldn't the hawks have traded Carter well they got paid to take him this same summer and now there's less

Cap space less exceptions available to use in mid-September So if they had a trade for him they would have made it I'm sure So you know yet getting a player getting an asset coming and going what is that the ideal a process? I understand that but taking on a player at five million dollars and waving them when you've been paid to do so is Totally fine and again that's 17 guys 15 spots so along the way there's only one thing that's been a guarantee for the hawks over the last like 6 7 8 weeks is that they had to do more roster moves because they had too many players Not by the way they still do now, but I have one fewer so no issue with me and doing this move Devon Carter was like the super obvious choice But certainly one that was on the short list the entire way and in a moment I will discuss the remaining roster crunch for the hawks worth things stand and more after work from our partners on the show today When you run a business It should not feel like you're just trying to connect something together in systems wise It was not designed to actually work together Maybe it's one after accounting one for inventory and everyone for sale and somehow none of them actually speak to each other

And if you see a post purchase survey, please mention you heard about it right here Cozierth.com All right before I dive into the roster crunch. I want to remind you if you want to check out the show add free Heartlauth on Hawks you join the everyday or club right now visit lock on Hawks dot supercast dot com for more Information and I'll dive into the roster crunch that remains right now and I'll do a refresher on the bottom of the roster and the candidates But I will just say this as an overarching thing at the top of this on a shorter podcast than usual that the Hawks could always make a trade still between now and opening night The roster is not due until the day before the opening week of the season basically so they could send somebody out and trade Into an exception to just kind of dump a player or trade someone somewhere else for a pick or whatever or maybe make a two for one trade or three for two trade That is all still possible But it's hard to project that without direct intel as far as like scenarios are concerned They don't have to just wave someone they don't have to they have to they have to cut the roster one more spot

But they have six weeks basically To go from 16 to 15 and that process does not have to be rushed nor does it have to be a trade or waiver has to be one of the two basically Between now and then now obviously there are some guys who are not going to go anywhere J.O. Johnson dice Daniels. I would say I'm okay, Conwoo, K.O. is under Walker Kingston and Flemmings. Zubi edge of four I'd say McCollum is probably on that list as well A very like unguys unlikely to move Obviously never say never in a war where look at gets traded in the middle of the night by the mavericks But like I think it's pretty safe to assume those guys are gonna be staying put Jock Landdale literally cannot be traded by league rule until January so he's not gonna get traded Dort and Wiggins haven't played a game yet The Hawks could trade them But I would guess the Hawks probably wouldn't want to do that unless there was a great opportunity that I don't want to So if you're see so that's like nine or ten guys right there The I'm not even gonna like bring up as far as like you know trade scenarios That's basically the the core of the roster plus a couple others But there are in my mind six players

That I count that are basically I would say possible To move and this is not an order. This is actually I'm gonna give it to you in order of salary And financial order how much they actually make so that leaves Cory Kisbert buddy healed Ace a Newell, which I'll explain in a second Moge Ryan them hard and Henry Vesar I think that is your basically your universe of players who are More likely to be not on the roster than the guys who I listed above them the ten guys earlier So I'll go one by one quickly, but again the Hawks have to go from 16 players on full contracts to 15 And they are under the cap. I won't go through all of the uh the money stuff because it hasn't changed like just waving dev and Carter Does not change the financial picture at all his money is guaranteed it stays on the books That's unfortunate, but that's just what it was So the money stuff that we talked about many times on the podcast has not changed I'll also just say this Cory Kisbert has the worst deal on the team full stop

He's the one guy on the roster that has a negative value contract in my opinion They'd love to move it. It's two years left by $27 million plus a team option They can't move it without paying to do so. That's not a secret. It's just very obvious They won't cut him I wouldn't think with multiple years left in his deal So you'd be looking at like a creative trade to do that unlikely, but at least possible buddy healed has nine point six million dollars on the books I will not do this whole thing again, but the one and only thing that I've disagree with on Cion pretty clearly In his tenure transactually was the choice to guarantee buddy heal its contract Even then I didn't like it But I don't hate as much of Rails does I think because they already owed him guaranteed money It was less than this, but they owed him guaranteed money There is utility and having his deal be expiring For slightly much of purposes, but he can still play a little bit He can still shoot a little bit He's also really the only buyout candidate sometimes you'll hear about a guy taking a buyout Um to help the team or try to get somewhere else I would not fall on the floor if buddy took less than his nine point six million dollars

Uh Sure can't answer the hawks and went inside for the minimum somewhere else that's that's certainly in play to me They do like buddy as a vibes guy. I don't know if you will play famously last year Quinn just didn't play him which was kind of confusing honestly, but um one of those things we're buddy has to be on the list So kissport and buddy make a lot of money everybody else makes a lot less so to be very clear Aeson rule is not going to be waived by the hawks not gonna happen one more time He's not gonna get cut But I would think there's not a zero percent chance that could trade him That's why he's on this list and the other guys above him or not again not expect that to happen But he didn't have this like he didn't have a great summer They did draft another combo big in zubi last year. He was I thought he was okay last year I think I actually played totally fine for his draft slot and his age But um and again, I think he's the least likely of these guys to be moved But I have to at least mention that sometimes teams Proactively trade guys that they don't love what they see and Aes is so cheap that he would have positive value

Etc etc etc So he's on the list, but I think the least likely of the six All right Mogay for me is currently the best player of the six ahead of Aesah had a buddy had a kisspert. He's the best player of these guys But he has two things against him one is that he has a non guaranteed Expiring contract and then and then two is that he's currently injured He has a fractured left foot that's that's a re-evaluation not a return re re-evaluation in three to four months That was announced on July 15 So you're talking mid October to mid november for re-evaluation and that doesn't mean return So they could probably trade Mogay Rather than just cutting him because he's still a really good player defensively The league kind of knows he's a really really really good defender the metrics say that He's still young. It's a valuable contract But there's a chance that he's the roster casualty either be either be a trade or via waiver Uh, I would say Ryan Nemhart's chances of making the team

kind of obviously went up today with Devon Carter not being the guy that they keep But not a lock for heart for Nemhart still The only reason why is like he's so cheap. He's only signed for one year though this season It's two point one million dollars. So there's no pain financially If you wanted to move on from him you just can cut him for very little penalty They could trade him maybe for a small return Um, I think they like Ryan Nemhart from what I understand But also, you know, if they needed to move somebody at the very last minute He would be maybe the easiest guy to move in summer specs And then you have Henry Vesar who they just drafted. I'm not expecting Vesar to get moved But I'm putting him here kind of in the asinule mold where they could trade him Like he's got guaranteed money for two years. They're probably not gonna cut him But um you get the guy in the 50s if stick around picks, you know players Obviously they like him. I think he has first around pedigree, but they're not like So invested in him, but they couldn't be having on this list But basically the guys who are candidates to just be waved are Buddy healed Ryan Nemhart and I guess mogae

I mean they they could wave Vesar But it would be weird if that were to happen. He's so cheap that maybe you could But kisspert and new or not waiver candidates I think buddy, you know being cut on the full number would kind of surprise me But anyway, there's there's a lot of there's a lot going on here I understand but what we do know for now is that uh things Got clarified to some degree because we we we we know that Devon Carter is not walking through that door at the end of the process Um last thing before we get out of here on a short and addition of the podcast the hawks did finally announce their training camp plan Today i've had media day on my calendar for quite some time It's monday September 28th so about two and a half weeks from now But the hawks announced today that they're going to Vanderbilt university in Nashville for training camp this year Now training camp is only like a three or four day event for the NBA teams because you have media day in your home market Then you go away for a few days the hawks went to uga a couple years ago They've been a chat nouga like 20 years ago There's been some times that they've traveled But it's often just in Atlanta this year. It's in Nashville for four days

So media day followed by four days in Nashville I had some hawks fans reach out to me of that actually live in the area asking if they had open events I'd be surprised if they had public events right now I know the actual official practices are all close to the public even the media sees just very very little of practice So uh knowing Quinn I'd be surprised if they did anything that was grandiose in public but tbd on that they didn't say no Just i'm not expecting that to happen and then they'll come back to hey to come back to Atlanta before they Open their actual exhibition schedule, but that's a notable thing Media day coming up in two and a half weeks and then uh a travel to Nashville for four days for some team bonding practices etc and yet by the way on the same topic There were plenty of pictures and the game's devencarner was with the team like not officially because the team's not meeting right now But like you saw some of social media content from a lot of the players they were working out together He was with those guys. So this is a relatively recent development like it was clear that devencarter wasn't necessarily like In the plan, but he wasn't out of the plane either like he had been with the team like playing basketball

Um at points over the summer. So um, you know One of the six in the NBA. I think devencarter is an NBA player and we'll see where he lands next But um for now the roster crunch is down to 16 and one more move on the horizon either Subtamsoon or not until mid-October Everybody's all I have on this Friday night edition of the podcast as a PSA barring more news I will have our first edition of the NBA Basically divisional over under series with myself and Robbie Kalam that I do every year Robbie's from CBS Sports that's already been recorded It will drop in your feed by the end of the weekend and say to him for that please subscribe to the podcast anywhere you find your podcasts Apple Spotify YouTube etc. Tell your friends and we'll see you all next time This is Jake from Lockdown when the game's on the line the best no end to pass because the right assist can change everything And off the court it's no different That's where your state farm agent comes in whether it's protecting your car your home or helping you prep for the unexpected That'll upset you up with a game plan that works for you like a good neighbor state farm is there
