Listeners learn the subtle signs of emotional withdrawal, why it happens, and how this internal shift impacts the divorce process. Olivia also offers a grounding exercise to help listeners identify the two emotional truths they’re holding right now, creating space for clarity and self-compassion.

This episode is ideal for anyone experiencing emotional disconnection in their marriage, preparing for divorce, or trying to understand a partner who appears distant or “already done.”

Welcome to Divorce Happens, the show where we support you before, during and after divorce, with education, inspiration and a little bit of laughter. Because as we know, divorce happens and then you start fresh. I'm Olivia Howell and this is Divorce 101A2Z. We're here to break down confusing divorce terms so that anyone can understand them. Whether you're in the thick of it, just thinking about divorce or supporting someone you love. Today's episode is brought to you by the letter W and the number 2. W is for withdrawal of emotion and the number 2 is a reminder that most divorces have two endings. The emotional ending and the legal ending and they rarely happen at the same time.

Let's start super simple. What is the withdrawal of emotion? The withdrawal of emotion is the quiet internal process where one or both parties slowly detach from the relationship before the divorce is even filed. It's the moment someone realizes, I'm not in this anymore. I've stopped hoping this will change, I'm grieving what this isn't, not what it is. It's subtle, it's private, it's often invisible. And for many people, it happens long before the marriage officially ends. In almost every divorce they are two timelines, the emotional divorce and the legal divorce. And they almost never line up. One partner may be emotionally done years before the paperwork begins. The other may still be emotionally attached long after the judge signs the final decree.

This mismatch is normal, but it's also the root of so much confusion, hurt and misunderstanding. Withdrawal can look like feeling numb, avoiding conflict because it feels pointless, feeling lonely inside the relationship, no longer planning a shared future, withholding emotional intimacy, loss of trust or safety, feeling more like roommates than partners, and grieving quietly. Most people don't recognize emotional withdrawal when it's happening, only when they look back. Withdrawal isn't always dramatic, sometimes it's just a slow fading. It's the hollow moments, the quiet Sundays, the times you stop asking for help because you already know the answer will disappoint you. It's the moment you realize you've been living alone inside the relationship for a long time. And here's the truth, emotional withdrawal is not failure, it is information, it's your

nervous system trying to protect you. When one partner has emotionally withdrawn and the other has not, divorce discussions can feel deeply asymmetrical. One person feels ready, the other person feels line-sided. One person is grieving the past, the other is grieving the future. When you understand that emotional timelines differ, things stop feeling quite so personal. Once today's number is two, here's your grounding step. Write down the two emotional truths you are holding right now. For example, I want clarity, but I'm scared. I'm grieving, but I know I can't stay. I love them, but I can't live like this. I'm exhausted, but hopeful. You don't need perfect clarity today, you just need honesty with yourself.

Today we learned that W is for withdrawal of emotion, and the number two reminds us that every divorce has two endings, the emotional one and the legal one. This has been Divorce 101 A2Z brought to you by Divorce Happens.
