Do You Still NEED a Top-5 Player to Win an NBA Championship?
About this episode
Locked On NBA – Daily Podcast On The National Basketball Association is made possible by:
Do you still need a top-five NBA player to win a championship? Recent champions have challenged one of the league’s oldest team-building rules, and Wes Goldberg, Matt Moore and Haize debate whether having an elite superstar is still the best path to a title — or whether teams are better off building deeper, more balanced rosters around stars such as Jalen Brunson and Jayson Tatum.
Then, should the Indiana Pacers regret trading for Ivica Zubac? The guys revisit the massive deadline deal now that Indiana lost its 2026 first-round pick and debate whether judging the trade by what that pick became is fair.
Finally, we reach peak offseason content: Which NBA players, past or present, belong on the Mount Rushmore of guys you’d most want to have a beer with?

This is the Lockdown Podcast Network celebrating 10 years of your team every day. Coming up on Lockdown NBA Daily, you used to need a top five players to win a championship. But what if that's not true anymore? The last few champions have started to blow up that theory. Plus, did the Pacers make a trade that they should already regret? And then it's peak offseason content, we're building the Mount Rushmore of NBA players we most want to have a beer with. Lockdown NBA Daily starts now. You are Lockdown NBA, your daily NBA podcast. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Hello and welcome back to Lockdown NBA Daily. I'm Wes Goldberg. That's Matt Moore and Hayes. On today's show, we revisit Indiana's Ivijasubatch trade. And we're going to build our Mount Rushmore of NBA players that we want to hang out with.
But first, we've seen the last few champions do it without a consensus top five player, Jalen Brunson, Jason Tatum. There's been this belief, though, for years that you kind of needed one of those guys to win a title. So I want to start today's show with a big picture conversation about this. When we're kind of talking about which teams are contenders in today's NBA. Who has a legitimate chance to win the next NBA championship? I just wonder that old rule of kind of unofficial rule of you kind of need one of these guys to have one. Is recent history, Matt, proof that you don't need one of those guys to win a championship anymore? And if so, what changed? You're muted, Matt. You're muted. Well, off the top. Sorry, it's typing the one. I don't know the answer to this. I really don't. It's a good question. I don't. I think you can look at it and go, well, look, Jason Tatum was in top five. Jalen Brunson was in top five. Sorry, next fan. They're pitching a fit about this.
But yeah, he's not top five. Staff, 2022. Right. Borderline. Stop top five. Right. Like a lot of people who still had them there. LeBron. 2019 or 2020. Probably still top five. And then like the counters here are Shay obviously top five MVP. Yoke it's coming off of two MVP seasons. Yannis and former MVP still in his prime. Why 2019? Probably top five player. Right. So you have this really mixed result. The thing I kind of get to with this West is like, if you're not going to have a top five player, you better be on the side of the bracket that falls apart, where everything gets melted because of injuries and bad luck. And because this is kind of, I think what we've seen is the too much of, I think the playoffs have become about attrition in recent years. And it really felt last year like the next one that we're on awesome run
and played the best basketball. But also like that cast team. Good God. Good. Good God. They face the six years they got past the Celtics after like the Celtics flew into pieces. So you do kind of have to have like the pathway break right for you more than I think it's about how good your best player is. Yeah, I mean, I think that it we've seen is more built around like just having a quality built team from top to bottom. Like having depth is I think is hugely important. But I think while you don't need a player that's necessarily a top five player, you do need a player that I think can go into playing like an MVP. Calibur top five player at times like Jalen Brunson has had absolute runs where he plays like an MVP. So I think that you doesn't have to be a top five, but they do have to be able to go into that mode. They have to be able to take over a series or a game from time to time. If you have one or two of those guys that can do it, you can be right there competing for a title. If OG has a 30 point game in game. Six five five. Who wins finals MVP?
I still think Jalen Brunson wins it. I think Brunson was really mid for most of that series and had a great finish to it. And the supporting stats were like, I'll give it to Brunson because he was so good in that last game. West isn't maybe the question here like the bar is just lowered. Because if you look at that list that I just gave you Brunson, Shay, Tatum, Yoke, Steph, Yannis, LeBron, Kauai. Isn't this more of just like, you don't have to have a top five, but you probably get it. You have to have a guy that most that I'll enough people would consider top 10. Yeah, I think all of these guys are top 10. So you definitely have to hit some sort of threshold, don't you? But I just think and maybe people just hear this and like, what's the difference? Top five top 10. I do think there's a big difference, right? Because for so much the league, I'm glad you went back to 2019 because that does feel like when things changed. We obviously have not had to repeat champions since 2019. But you think about the Warriors run, right? They have Steph and KD. Those are two top five guys, Cleveland with LeBron James, Miami with LeBron James,
the Spurs with Tim Duncan and Tony Parker and quite Leonard at his prime. You know, when he was a top five guy, still with the Spurs, it, you know, you go back, like some of the top five guys have won Yoke, SGA, Yannis recently. But it didn't, there was, there's a lot more non top five guys leading teams to champions. And they're basically ever has been because you go back. I mean, I went back pretty far. I mean, you can go back to the Lakers was Shack and Kobe, two top five guys, Boston in 2008. I mean, was, was Garnett still a top five guy at that point? I think probably so. Miami with Dwayne Wade in 2006 and in 2007 with, with Tim Duncan. You can go like maybe the 2004 Detroit pistons, which is always sort of the model for this. But even you know, but we're talking about like one in 30 years, you know, when you didn't have like a legit, oh my God, this guy might be the best player in the league. Nobody has ever talked about Jason Tatum or Jaylen Brunson as the best player in the league.
They're just not part of that conversation as good as they are. They are so good, but they're not that. And you usually needed that. And I do wonder, Hayes, if something changed recently that we're starting to see more of these a little bit more often. Yeah, I mean, I think that it's the parody around the league, right? Like you said, that's the error that we're in right now. If you're going to name this anything, it's other than the second text, Apen Err, it's the parody error. Like it's finally getting to Adam Silver's what dream, the fact that so much parody in the Eastern conferences, a perfect example of that. So I think that now because there is that parody, you have teams that have probably more talent on it from top to bottom. Now than ever before that, if you just have that player that can be a top 10 player, it takes you over the top more. Can we just make a quick mandate on the show and never use the combination of words Adam Silver's what dream again? I make no promises and that I can't do it. Way to know six is interesting. He actually did finish six and MVP, but he got zero first place votes. Like we kind of retroactively are going to be like, well, way was the top five player then. Well, not like no.
Yeah, it was probably close to what we just saw from Jalen Brunson, right? Where he just kind of hit another level when it mattered. Yeah. I mean, I think way was much better player, but I agreed. I think I guess you can go back and kind of you can kind of tell the story of the best players have always won the titles. But I also kind of wonder if some of this is this is the kind of stuff that I really fight against where it's. Do the best players won the titles or do the players and one that titles we retroactively that apply them to be the best in the world? Like how much of that happens, right? Because it's a certain level of that. And you think we're just not doing that anymore with guys like Brunson and Tatum that we're just sort of like, hey, we'll give you your flowers, but not that many flowers. And there are there are and there's so many guys that I think we're at that level. Of play that just weren't in the position to win the title. I get there's this kind of reflexiveness to this question of, you know, you don't do you need a top five guy to win a title. Versus if you win a title, do you have a top five guy?
Right. There's kind of this reflexive type of there. And I have a hard time with it because look, I think about guys with Charles Barkley. Tracy McGrady. I think about guys like that have been in these kind of conversations of being that good who are that good and just didn't get there for whatever reason. I think it is like a really kind of interesting question of these seven things like the Warriors 2016. I think Kevin Durant was the best player in the world in 2017. I think he was the best in the world that year. Staff was still the most impactful player ever, but I think Katie was the best player in the world then. But if he isn't going to go and stay as he went in title, I don't know. Yeah. Hey, to spin this forward a little bit, if we think about the guys who are not in the top five, if we just agree that the top five is the consensus top five, shame, the Yokeh, when we look at Yannis and whatever order that you want to put those guys in. Who outside of that top five group has the best chance to be the next non top five guy to win a championship?
I probably still go, Jay Branson. When they're first because Branson is probably going to be one that can win. Let's go. Yeah, that's a good point. Yeah, Branson, you know, Tatum, obviously they've done it. Is there some, yeah, I mean, I said Branson's your answer. I'm not going to push for more. Wait, what's the question? Who outside of the top five has the best chance of winning the next championship if we kind of try to say it's not jail and Branson. I'm not, this is not me. Krabbing on Branson again, I've done twice in this episode, but like Branson's awesome. Okay, but it's also just like what we haven't seen a repeat champion. If the thunder can't repeat, the nicks are not doing it. It's not apples and oranges. It's just not that simple. I mean, it's just not. It's not as simple as, oh, X player couldn't do it. So other player can't because a lot of things have to come down to it. I don't think a lot of a lot of people didn't think the nicks could win a title last year if they're being honest with how they started off the season. So to tease, I would put this guy on there. I think Tyres Albert and absolutely proven that he can win an NBA championship. Oh, for sure. For sure.
We were probably talking about him already being an NBA champion if it wasn't for any key. I mean, Donovan Mitchell with Cleveland, you know, we all have our doubts about the calves, but they're going to win a lot of games. They're going to be up there. Tyree Smack see perhaps with the Philadelphia 76ers. Anthony Edwards is sort of on the doorstep of this and he's kind of he feels like one of those guys that if you were to tip the scales into champion, he would end up probably being in our top five, but there's some names here and I do think it's a good point. The parody, I think is really important. There's a million reasons why we can go into that that we don't have time for on today's show that we've talked about in the past. Meanwhile, to use Matt's tease there, the Indian apacres will try to get back to the NBA finals, but they've made a big change at center. Trading for a Vichazoo botch at the last trade deadline, but should they already regret that deal? We're going to talk about that and here from Tony East over at Lockdown Pacers after this. We are Monday to Friday at 1 p.m. Eastern wherever you get your podcasts. Now that the big moves of the offseason are pretty much done. I want to go back to one of the biggest moves from our last trade deadline. That's the of each of you to Zubatch trade just a reminder quickly of the details. The Pacers traded for Zubatch and Kobe round of part of the deal. The Clippers got Benedict, Matthew and Isaiah Jackson. And here's the sticky part. The Pacers 2026 first round pick that was top four protected and 10 to 30 protected. Meaning that if it fall if it fell between five and nine. It would go to the Clippers. They also got a 2029 first from the Pacers that was unprotected. You know spoiler alert that Pacers pick ended up landing at number five. The Clippers are and the the Clippers went ahead and use that pick. Now we know the Pacers lost the pick. Obviously they revisited that trade recently on locked on Pacers.
So the trade that gets you about to Indy was one that I think was I don't know if controversial is the word, but it was certainly an eyebrow raising trade at the time. The Pacers send a top four protected first round pick to the Clippers, which the Pacers had. I think the second worst record in the Eastern Conference among the worst records in basketball. And they end up not winning the lottery. They end up picking fifth, which means that pick went to the Clippers. Do you think that there is any regret from the Indiana side of things that they kind of didn't get the chance to have their cake and eat it too? In terms of being able to get two bots and pick inside the top four, do you think that they would do that again knowing the outcome? It feels worse when the literal like if you try to top four protected pick the worst case scenario is that that pick is five. And guess what the pick was five like the worst case scenario did happen. And so that does make you feel different and have some regret like their president basketball operations tweeted. I'm sorry like two seconds after the lottery ended, right? Of course they feel a different way about it.
I maintain and I think this would be their stance if true serum was ejected into them that if they had had the fifth pick, they would have been trying to trade it for if he's a spot or done something similar in the summer anyway. So hey is now that we're revisiting this trade here. Do you think that the Pacers should have regret seeing how things played out? You know, they got exactly what they wanted out of this trade. I mean, you could have walked away like bandits had you still kept your pick, but like you getting Zubak in that trade and now that you have Tyrus, Haliburton coming back, you know, fully healthy. It shouldn't regret anything. You took a risk and that risk could still end up paying off for you this season. This could be one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference this season, although they're not being talked about a lot. Yeah, I mean, I think they're going to be awesome. I think the question of the pick value is always difficult. It's like they did lose the pick. Well, they're going to lose a pick regardless if they hadn't been this one. It was going to be the 2031 and 2031. They could have been worse, right? I think it's probably still worth it for Indiana based off of what zoo is now.
I was saying like I've been a little bit. I mean, look at some of the numbers from last season a little. Tell them my head a little bit about zoo. There was like he just wasn't the same guy and everyone's like, oh, that's just context. Like the Clippers weren't as good and. The Pacers weren't, you know, we're obviously tanking the Pacers stuff. Fine. Look, okay, we can throw that stuff out. We got trade to a team that was ahead of plan. But like we remember that the Clippers came in coming off of that rum where it was like man, the Clippers might be the second best team in the Western Conference and then lost the first round. And then they came back and it was like, oh my God, what a disaster. Like the Clippers had like their heads fell off. Like everything got terrible there. And if you're like, well, yeah, the team was terrible. So it's on zoo. Well, zoo's on that team. Zoo's part of that. It's like I have like a little. There's this nagging thought in the back of my head that's like, what if there's like a little like zoo. Some guys peak early. What if the zoo peaked a little bit early on this? I still think the trade value was worth it. I just think you include that pick because it wasn't guaranteed you lose it. If you kept it great, if not clearly been a McMatherin doesn't have the value.
I think he should have like I'm shocked. Or the Pacers and Clippers were both like, we're good things. I'm shocked at that. Are you as much as you being a numbers guy. Benedict, Matthew has never been a plus when he's been on the court either offensively or defensively. I'm not too shocked at it in that sense. I do think he's better than what people have given him credit for. I think he has a chance to make that deal look like a vast underpay. But like I'm not too surprised that people undervalued him. Like he's a scoring guard, a bench scoring guard. They scored a lot of points off the bench, but his teams never been positive when he's been on the court. That's fair. I just I always thought he was really good and you know, I never thought the plus minus stuff was necessarily tied to him. For sure. I don't know if he's like some other guys. I do think West has got question in here. I'm going to spoil it on the run down about who would they have taken otherwise. That's like a really ancient question because the next three guys were all point cards. Yeah, I don't want to. I mean, do we assume that they ended up with the fifth pick because I didn't do this trade or do we assume or can we pretend that it fall. It fell at nine and that it you know, the protections ended up being going back to the Pacers, but no, the officers are do it or don't that you do it and live with these results or you don't do the deal.
All you keep the five. I can see them being in Omora is Johnson. That feels about right. I can see them being in for Omora is Johnson. Well, is there anybody in this group that would have helped them in a load of East because this is a Pacers team that has aspirations of getting back to the NBA finals, not of rebuilding, not a finding their next star. They have their star. They're have their second banana and see how come they have all the role players that they need. If you look at the board of guys who are just sort of in this lottery area, is there somebody Hayes that stands out as, oh, this player actually would have helped them in an Eastern conference that just got a lot more competitive this year. Oh, yeah, I think if you're talking about immediate impact, like they probably I could see them being in on a Yaxxel and Dumber. That's kind of the name is I can see them being the actual team. Yeah, not any thoughts here. I mean, I think that's way too much like if you move down, maybe that's it. Like they moved down and pick up some stuff that makes it I can't see like taken. I'm sorry. Mores was more was projected largely right around here, but also like kind of.
Three spots early. Yeah, it was like nine versus 12, right. And then Yaxx was is I think a pretty divisive guy. Mara's there's a lot of like a lot of eyes on him. Right and buries is the only guy I can get here where it's like maybe you take buries and that sets you up the ability to move off of them hearts money in the future. Like that's the only guy I can really kind of look at. It's like it allows you to kind of not have to retain to your McConnell and potentially move forward, but like also we're talking about them not doing the trade. Then that would have that would have been their instant replacement for being math and a better version of because he's more of a defensive mind player. Like Wagler, Brown, Aka Fleming's down those guys make sense to me. You're just be like you're you're basically just like drafting somebody who's going to be a passenger for the entire season and like long term it's good, but I just have a hard time with that. So that's kind of the reason why I'm still kind of like, yeah, I don't know man, they got they traded a player that didn't want in Matherin. And a number five. For an all NBA center.
Right number five for a center like Zubach who is who was all NBA a couple years ago, but he we don't think about him as one of the elite centers. I understand why a lot of people look at that on its face and just like that is too much you just traded the fifth pick for Zubach what a disaster. I think all of us agree like we can't get there with disaster because everything has to be taken into the context of this patient's team is what ready to win right now. We know that because they were just in the NBA finals last time we saw their star healthy like they're going for it and teams that draft players this high that are kind of going for it. Those players don't exactly end up becoming their future franchise players like sometimes they'll get lost in the shuffle. Can I ask you a question? I mean, I think I really great by the way example that is actually throwback for the old heads is dark on millichatch. Great distance great crap to them and then he just was like there you know, I didn't stop them from winning the title. Wes if they traded this pick for zoo let's just make it into that they trade the number five pick for zoo.
If they did that in 2024, how do you feel about it? Like before they go to the finals. Before zoo has his breakout season in 25. It's an interesting question I kind of see where you're going with it, but I would have been like what on earth are they doing and I like to even back then but I would have been like that's crazy. So like this is this is I think is where I'm starting to be a little bit like the hairs on the back of my neck what's left of them are starting to stand up is like. Okay, how much are we judging this deal and being very much like oh yeah, it's totally worth it's going to be great. They're going to be awesome based off of just the 25 season. And what does that do? Because I think everyone was like oh yeah, zoo's really good. He's like he's a really good player. But like not an all in the air guy not like oh yeah, he's the missing piece. He's the one that's going to replace miles turner and make all this fit. Yeah, does he level out as like a slightly better Isaiah Hart and Stein and then you just traded the fifth pick for that.
Interesting question. I think this might be one of those rare situations where we almost do have to play the results right like we kind of have to see what zoo is in Indiana and then judge it based off of that. The process was risky. No question about it, but I think we all agree like even what the pastures are trying to accomplish here maybe the risk was worth it. We're going to shift gears into some peak off season content in the next segment. I'm going to ask the guys if they can get a beer with any former or current NBA player, who would they get a beer with stick around. It's locked on NBA daily. Welcome back to locked on NBA daily thanks for making us part of your daily routine and making the locked on podcast network your first listen every day. It is September 1st which means we are in the peak of the off season not a whole lot of stuff going on guys so it's time for some peak off season content. I've got a bunch of questions lined up that I want to ask you guys over the next few days. The first one is your mount rush more of NBA players current or retired you would most want to have a beer with Matt I'm going to start with you because you seem so excited about this that you already put some names in our shared Google Doc show notes so aren't you lead us off here.
Yeah, shockers I've got things to say. My first big was like a lot of morning because he's my fair player of all time but then I realized I'm asking you have a beer with a guy with one kidney and was like oh no. It's tough you can have a water yeah so I was having a water but I just would love to have a conversation with so because I have that much respect and love for him like that speaks to the kid in my heart. Drew holiday is one I just drew like the best dude in the league like everyone knows Drew is just like the best dude in the league and he's seen so much stuff from the Anthony Davis year in New Orleans or everything fell apart till he was on that Philadelphia team and like that like you got traded out for the process and you know once it's title with the box and then gets traded and when and then trade again and when the title of the Celtics and I just think Drew would be a really good hang could be a cheat code too because you could end up getting the whole family there and everybody loves the holiday family like they might just stop by. Yeah. Brook Lopez another one I would I would rather have both the Lopez brothers and just definitely we would have a lot to talk about I think and so comic book stuff I would love to do that just nerd stuff in general would just very much like and just like there they are smart people who I like having conversations with smart people that's kind of the thing.
So that's your that's your route rush more I have others but I don't want to. Hey so I'm going to start with my bulls guys first Michael Jordan and Dennis robin Michael Jordan for clear reasons Dennis Robbins just because like just to get Dennis robin drunk and just to listen to the stories is worth the worth the night and of itself right there. addiction would you would not be limited to beers. The headline reads bulls podcaster winds up in Taiwan ease adult establishment after a while vendor oh no no no we have to have the location has to be chosen by me it's going to be downtown Chicago like I'm not no we're just no way and Dennis robin shoes were landed it's not not happening at all location and no thank you on that um Baron Davis just one of my favorite players of all time from college. Great choice yeah Baron love to sit down and have like we're Baron Davis is also done in like entertainment to like in TV and stuff to be great to have a conversation with him and then the fourth guy man um
Dr J. Oh it's got you good one that's a great one yeah so way back when I'll get my amount rush more but I had a crown royal with Dr J once because he was a and maybe still might be a like one of the the faces of crown royal like they did a whole NBA thing and I used to run a blog that got sponsored by crown royal for like a year and they I had no business being sponsored by ground well like this was like peak like we just need content creators like like businesses were just sort of figuring out what that was. And so this was the New Orleans all star game not the last one but the one previous to it like they had to all star games in like half a decade. And they like rented out a club and Dr J like gave a speech about how much he loves crown royal or whatever some sort of prepared thing that somebody wrote for him but then we just sat there and just like had a drink with Dr J and it was like really really cool highlight highlight moment for me in my early content creating. So um I don't think you're coming home alive from that he's just I want.
Oh you are going to find another first of all I grew up in Europe I've been legally able to drink since I was like 13 there's nobody who can out drink there's very few people in the world. I love that you just challenged Dennis Rodman to a drinking. I killed him sobbing in drinking contest like once I just this this as and don't judge me don't send help my way so my my younger sister graduated from Alabama. Me and her went out drinking the night we spent $175 on shots and the waitress literally looked at us and said I've never seen two people drink as much as you would be able to walk out of there and we walked out my dad will probably tell people I was conceived on the night at tequila. It's just in my in my DNA so I'm not going anywhere. I'm not really worried about the alcohol I believe you by the way that's impressive. I've just it's more of like the heroin is. I'm not you're not you're not casually throwing in heroin. Dennis Robino thank you for that. I'm heroin into my Miller light that's crazy. Okay I don't think I can top that but I'm just going to give you my list I'm going to win Wade.
They were playing growing up Jersey in the back obvious I'm Chris Bosch because everybody just talks about how great of a hang he is sort of similar to what Matt was saying just like smart guy when hang out with them. I'm going to say I want to save my fourth spot for you guys because I think it's going to surprise you. My I was kind of debating between like Kevin Garnett who was one of my players growing up but he seems really intense but I think that could be fun. Carmelo Anthony who's I've always had good interactions with and I just wonder like with that be kind of fun Kevin Durant like when he's chill he's actually a really good conversation. I do wonder if I can get him with a beer at a table if I can actually have some fun with them. So one of those guys I might just go Garnett for the vibes. My last one is Paul Pierce. I want to like to be like four or five beers in and just to be like really really you think you are as good as Dwayne Wade. I just want to confront him at a bar that's my that's my dream so I want to have a drink with Paul Pierce and just be like are you sure like we want to have this conversation.
I want to have the bar debate with him. Wade Bosch and the chance to yell at a Boston Celtic this is the most Miami coated thing I've ever heard. Man that's incredible. MDA only Mike Antony only played in Europe. It coach there's a lot of big coaches. I will tell you there's like so many coaches I would rather have. Oh we can pick yeah pick coaches that that we know we should do with coaches. We should do a separate one with just coach. There's so many right. Coaches and GMs that's what we should do. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Coaches and GMs about Rishmal. Yeah. Definitely one. Nash is like a fun one because like yeah. There's a lot of stuff to kind of think about but like Steve's a little bit like he's a little bit no toast and just kind of quiet and reserved like he's not his play style was not at all like he was. Derrick's probably a good one. I think. Oh, I think they're going to be a really good hang. Yeah. Just drinking effa wise. I think but I think the best selection of all this. Oh, but David West is another one of mine. Even though West I would avoid the topic of analytics the entire time.
But like West has really he has always had really great thoughtful ideas about things and I think David. I always loved talking to David West when he was a player. Honorable mention Blake Griffin. Everybody talks about how funny he is. I do like the Mount Rushmore if he don't want to have a drink with. I have so many of those guys too. I do not want to go have a beer with white Howard. No, that's a good idea. I can't say the joke I want to say. I just can't say it. We'll leave it there for today.
