Do you trust the Lions secondary?

0:00I saw this tweet during the break. I read it to you and I want to read to everybody else because this to me is unbelievable. Joe Pompleyano, who is a sports business kind of guy, tweeted this out, Roger Gidell has had an insane career. He wrote a letter to the NFL office after college. He landed in an internship in the PR department. He spent 22 years in different NFL roles. He became commissioner in 2006. So 20 years ago. New four year contract will run through 2031. Then it says this, the average NFL team was worth $898 million and Gidell became commissioner. But now is worth $9.34 billion dollars. That's like more than 10 fold. As a result, Gidell's total compensation will likely reach $1 billion dollars by the time his newest contract runs out, making him one of the only people I can think of who's earned

1:02a billion dollars from a single company without ever owning any equity in the company. That I could not believe when I saw that. He's going to he will have earned almost $1 billion dollars when his contract runs out. I mean, he's been great for the NFL. He's a lot of Bushlight Apple man. Oh, yeah. He, I think these these jobs in some ways are thankless and impossible to please everybody. But in other ways, it's just that you're working for the owners to increase revenue. And he was handed the car keys of this league and the job of the commissioners don't effort up. And an example of it getting F'd up is probably right now the best example I can think of is college football. Because college football is, you know, the commissioner college football is right now, the courts.

2:09Yeah. So many decisions are made in college football based about litigation or threat thereof. And neither that's not good. That's not good at all. And in the case of the NFL, he has not f'd it up. You know, is that is this contract incentive laden when the commissioners job is to raise money to take revenues through the roof. And that's what the motivation is. Clearly, you're not always making the decision for the best interest of the sport. The health and safety of the player improvements. That's all to avoid getting sued. And I know, whatever. I mean, I'm not mad at him for making that money, although it feels like money could go to a lot more useful things. Well, they've had some legal scrohn. I guess take Salis and this.

3:10So the donations to charity. CNFL is a very charitable organization. Well, thank you for adding that. You're right. That does help. But I mean, Roger Gidele in his tenure has made a ton of money for owners and a ton of money for players, which is ultimately what both sides want. They want to get paid more. And they are. All right. Here's a feedback coming in regarding what Dan came up to say about the secondary. Back into the defense starts with the front seven. It's hard to grade anybody back there if you're not getting pressure. Secondary to me is a weight and C. That's from Brian and Florida. Do you expect the pass rush to be better this year? Yes. Yeah. I think it'd be more consistent. All right. Because let's not lose track. Okay. Obviously, Hutch had a good year last year. We expect Hutch to be even better. He looks like he's been unstoppable. Great. But we don't want to lose focus that last year they had alkeny Muhammad who also had double digit sacks and was very good. That may have been the one trick pony and they didn't want to invest in that instead. What they did was invest in the position with one of them with other players have in the roster and then by drafting Derek Moore in the second round.

4:13So you've got you know, last year's pick a Haasini who they liked this year's pick a Derek Moore who they like. Did you want him who they like and oh, by the way, Tracy is apparently going to be, you know, the starting. Lacey Lacey. Tyler. Tyler Lacey. No, I got you. You didn't know who he is. That's right. Nobody does. We have to touch on yesterday because I was like, you know, nobody talks about Tyler Lacey. What do you say? He loves him. That's his dog. But it was just I mean, last year Hutch had 14 and a half sacks. The team had 49. It was top five in the NFL. But there's, you know, to me, QB pressures and what you do in run support are underrated, a very underrated part of the position. Yeah, I feel like that the run, the run defense is going to be improved this year because with the healthier, Aleem McNeil and Tyler Williams in a second year, he, he, the other thing he said is Lacey's perfectly cast as that big end opposite of him.

5:14But Derek at work makes a very interesting point. I think people forget the Detroit Lions made it to the NFC championship with Kindle Vildor. Vildor. Yeah. Well, we also remember what happened the NFC championship. We do. But I mean, a team that went to the NFC championship game with what they started in the secondary tells you that there's a, there's a ceiling there. And if you have somebody, it's just a little bit better in Kindle Vildor. Well, they could certainly get there probably probably it picks off that pass. Do I really live a, no, I don't at all. But the name came up and that's all I think of his face mask touched, touched down. And I don't mean he committed a face mask penalty. I mean, it ball went through his hands, hit his face mask, popped up in the air and was caught for a touchdown. Yeah, that happened. It felt like this is an interception. Well, one next text, one of the biggest other reactions locally that I can remember in a long time is us not doing enough to replace a bottom 10 corner in the league. Terran Arnold literally never did anything for the Detroit lines. Um, yeah, I mean, I still, if, if Arnold, if, if, Arnold didn't have the legal issues and they'd released him and he was, I would be like, I'm not sure they're not going to regret that because that's a tough position to learn. Once he got accustomed with the rules, he had all those interference calls to start off and then kind of shut that down and became a much better corner the rest of the way.
