3:09Hi, everybody, and welcome in to about Rongo, Cicito Dodgers on deck on this Friday, September 4th. As your Los Angeles Dodgers 83 and 57, sitting atop the NL West, a 9 1 1 1 2 half game lead in the division. After a dramatic walkoff win last night to salvage their series with St. Louis, the Dodgers homestand continues tonight with the first to three against the Washington Nationals who are in town Blake Snow on the mound. First pitch from Uniclo Field. The Dodgers stadium is coming up at 710. Coming up over the next hour. Here on Rongo, Cicito Dodgers on deck. You are going to hear from David Vazday throughout the hour. We'll hear from the Dodger manager coming up in about 20 minutes. We'll got your preview of this pitch team matchup. We got your Dodgers magical moments. We'll hear from Kirsten Watson. We got the latest entry news as well with this Dodgers team. In just a few minutes, we'll head out to the Galpuffor broadcast booth with Charlie Steiner and Rick Monday. Well, last night, it took some walkoff magic for the Dodgers to get the W. Terrick Scooble got the starting navigated through five plus sitting.

4:11That's allowed two runs on 10 hits while striking out six along the way. Scooble gave up a career high. 10 hits, but was able to limit the damage as the Cardinals got an RBI single from bias and the first and an RBI single from Urias and the third. St. Louis jumped out to a two nothing lead. The Dodgers offense, meanwhile, was quiet against starter Quinn Matthews. Sometimes you need the pitcher to finally make a mistake. And he did in the fifth. A lead off double by Tommy Edmund, two baddies later. Edmund on third bays with one out. No pitch and it goes to the backstop. Edmund rushing home. He scores down the second base. Teosker heard and that's it is two to one. That's another way you can score when you get runners over a third base. The Dodgers will take it a wild pitch from Quinn Matthews Dodgers on the board down two to one. The Dodgers had a chance in the eighth inning. Then Cardinals reliever Soriano loaded the bases with a lead off walk to Hernandez. They can second him two out walks to pinch hit or max Muncie and Kyle Tucker. However, Dalton rushing went down swinging to end the thread.

5:12The Dodgers at that point were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Down two to one, go to the bottom of the ninth, facing Cardinals closer. Riley O'Brien. And with one out, Tommy Edmund, a single to left. He stole second base, which was huge. Muncie bets, walked that brought up then. Teosker, Hernandez, who found himself with the three to count. Here comes the payoff pitch to Hernandez. Swings line, tribe, left center field. That's going to split the outpickers. Go to the wall. Edmund comes around the score. Here comes Betzer-Round third. He'll get to the play. Dodgers win. Dodgers win. Dodgers win. On a two run hit from Teosker, Hernandez in the bottom of the ninth. The eighth walkoff win the season for the Dodgers. Oh, how do you like it? Second hit of the ninth for Teosker Hernandez. And the Dodgers will walk off win. Teosker Hernandez delivers a walkoff two run hit to center.

6:15Dodgers walk off the St. Louis Cardinals three to two. That's the top tier play of the game, brought to by Arco Quality. Top tier guys for Les Dodgers. With their eighth walkoff win of the season, Tommy Edmund. Well, he was pretty impressive last night, filling in for Shohei O'Tani in the lead-off spot. Going four for five with two run score. Teosker Hernandez finished with two hits in the two RBI's with the win. Dodgers now 83 and 57 on this season. They're right back at it tonight. Gone on the Cardinals. Now the Washington Nationals in town for the start of a three-game series. Blake Snell on the Mount of the Series opener. First pitch to 710 with more. Let's head out to the Galpin' for broadcast booth as we say hello to Charlie Steiner and Rick Monday, guys. All right, Tim. We're down to the final 22 games of the regular season. 24 days remain. The Dodgers at 83 and 57 in first place in the National League. West, comfortably in front of Arizona by 9.5 games. 10 in front of San Diego. The magic number is 13. The Dodgers and the Braves each picked up a game on the Brewers last night. They trail no walkie by three and a half and three in the lost column.

7:18But the reality is, Mo, with the tie-breaking situation being what it is, the Dodgers are really four behind the Brewers. Yeah, I'm been dead. They've got to get it into gear. There's no offense and buts about it. Hopefully last night was a very good sign for a lot of different reasons. First of all, for Teasca Hernandez, not only the two run double with one out in the bottom of the night last night, the score of the two runs into the victory margin. But he's had better swings, including a single he had in the third inning. So now we're seeing a couple of things. He made an adjustment with the swing itself, trying to use the hands a little bit more. We're seeing a higher velocity now, exit velocity off of his mat. And if he can just narrow the strike zone down and leave that slider away, leave that alone, he's going to be just fine. Eight for 16 in his last four games. And so Teasca certainly come alive. And Tommy had been four hits last night leading off again today. Otani getting another day off. Yeah, another day off along with Freddie Freeman.

8:20And for Freeman, he's going to be back in there tomorrow. Dave Roberts is talking about that. The other good news is, Rocky Sasaki, because of the blister went on the interlist. He had an extended bullpen session today. Now the blister was covered, but just watching him as a coming to the ballpark, he had very good velocity. Dave Roberts was very impressed on top of it. He even had Dave Roberts stand in there like a hitter. And he says, you know, hitting his difficult. He says, I felt much better in the interview room that I did at home. Blake Snal goes for the Dodgers tonight. Boy, he's been great since coming off the injured list. Young Lefty, Big fella, 6-3, about two and a quarter. And when you, Dave Roberts was saying that, with talking to Shochu, Hado, last night, today, how they're looking at this, they're hopeful that it's not going to be an IEL situation, they're hopeful that, you know, maybe in a few days he'll just be feeling better so he could be available in a pinch hit situation or just, you know, to be back out there. He has stopped his throwing progression. He's not doing plios anymore. Until, you know, they get a better idea. It's just whether it's the bicep, allowing not some time to heal. All the imaging has come back negative, but it's clear that it is, as we saw in the

11:25results of their night with the four strikeouts, it's clear that it is kind of bleeding into his hitting and the performance at the plate. So how they're just looking at this is it's continuing to be a day-to-day situation. It's continuing to be, okay, let's just check in with the show Hey, see how he's feeling in allowing this time to be a mental reset as well as a physical reset. It's clear that the body is not 100% and we know that in general at this point in the season, the body for anybody is probably not going to be 100%, but when the results are starting to be impacted where it's clear that there's some frustration, now is a time that they're looking to try to manage the physical and mental side so that show Hey can get back to being the guy that they need and that they know can be at the top of the order. Alright, a couple of other updates. Edwin Diaz, still on the injured list, Roki Sasaki, got the blister on that middle finger on his right throwing hand, but both guys are throwing. Yeah, both guys are throwing, both guys look really good today, so Edwin Diaz took

12:26part in a live BP. So for him, right now Dave Roberts was saying they expect for him to go out on a rehab assignment, but due to where we are in the calendar and due to the length of the minor league season, they might have to go back and forth to see if that would make the most sense for Edwin or if it makes more sense for him to continue to do lives before he is activated. But the stuff is coming out really sharp. Dave Roberts was saying that this is the best that he has looked, especially as he's been working through a few mechanical changes, the arms lot, and looking to get the results on the mound. He looks really good, and then you've got Roki Sasaki, as you mentioned, who's still nursing that blister on his right hand, and he had it covered up, but for him to be able to throw a bull pin for the stuff to look good, Dave was even laughing that he stood in the box. And he was like, hey, I was impressed. Even considering he's still as much as the blister is healing, it is still there. So the fact that he's feeling good and was able to execute the pitches is a great sign

13:27as they continue to kind of have a plan for him to be built up for now as a starter, and if they need to make an adjustment from the bull pin when he comes back, they'll kind of work through that when the time comes. Always good news when guys are trending in the right direction on Comic-Con. We appreciate it. 14:27Marongo Casino resorts and spies a grand slam for good times Blake Snell on the Mount First pitch coming up at 710. This is the LA Dodgers injury report. Presented by UCLA Health, the official medical partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers show Hey, Otoni, soreni elbow neck Eric Lauer on the IEL with the elbow inflammation. Roki Suzuki on the IEL with the blister on that middle finger. Andy Pahes on the injured list with the fracture left hand, but he is injury paying free right now, but he is paying free. So that is good news. And when Diaz on the IEL Blake trying in his back, that is certainly good news for the Dodgers bull pain. We'll climb out for the regular season, hoping to be back for the post season. Well, the Dodgers last night with a walk off win. Tarrick Scooble got to start gave up 10 singles, two runs pitching into the sixth inning. Got a no decision and afterwards talked about his outing. I think early just to change up was a little bit elevated and that's kind of how you can put some good swings on it. And at the end of the day, though, they're all singles. So it's not like I need to change my approach. It's not like they were slugging anything.

15:28So just got to stay true to who I am. I bet there was 10 to 15 throws that are less than two inches off the plate both ways. And as those are over the plate, there's 10 or 15 more strikes. I mean, leverage a lot better. So it was a good day, though. When you have moments like that where it is such a small kind of difference for you, where you want to be and where the ball is at, how do you kind of just work there and how did you find making that adjustment in game? Yeah, I mean, I'm just really making adjustment. You know, we're talking this small, you know, that's like in my eyes, that's execute in a pitch, you know, and especially, you know, if I'm practicing, that's execution. You know, it's just, again, an inch and a half the wrong way, you know, or, you know, some of them are like point four the wrong way, you know, and it's frustrating in the moment. But at the same time, like, the ball's gone almost exactly where I want it to go, you know, but, you know, if I'm throwing a baseball within three inches of where I want it to go, that's pretty good, I'd say.

16:29It just happened to be outside the strikes on. What was that ninth inning like for you where were you doing watching that? That was an tournament I'm doing my post throw stuff and, you know, what an inning. Obviously Tommy, what a series out of Tommy. And then good up out at a Mookie. And then Teo, you know, he's been hitting the ball really, really hard lately and a lot of them haven't been rewarded. You know, he's had a lot of 111 line outs or 107 ground out, you know, and you feel for guys when they're hitting the ball really hard and they don't get the result they want. So it was only a matter of time until he kind of came through and that was a great effort to get that to. I mean, the pitch you challenged, you know, he's not trying to throw that up, change up up and then perfectly executed. Now, it's not where you're trying to throw it that ball. 23:44I accept everybody for who they are. This is Dodger Insider, David Bassett. All right, David Show, hey, Otoni, it feels like we're just kicking the can down the road a couple more days. Is that the case with Otoni and maybe an IELST? Yeah, that's still on the table, Tim. That won't be decided until Sunday and you'll hear from Dave Roberts later in the show to discuss what the Dodgers options are and what they're weighing when it comes to whether or not placing Otoni on the IELST, but just observing him in the dugout. I hadn't seen him with a smile that big for that long in a long time and a baseball game. And I think he was somewhat relieved that the Dodgers made the decision for him to not have him start last night and certainly not have him start tonight. The only question is the Dodgers are weighing whether or not one or two days is going to make a difference or does an IELST really make the biggest difference to get him as right as possible offensively.

24:46Forget about the pitching. Get him right so he can be the dominant force as the lead off-fitter and the DH and the best player and the guy that really drives this whole thing. So that's what they're weighing and they'll come back tomorrow and check in with them, and they do have him have to make a decision by Sunday whether or not to IELO, Tani or not. Ford, official vehicle of Major League Baseball. I saw your tweet earlier today, David, Bobby Miller had a locker inside the Dodgers clubhouse. What's going on? Yeah, it was great to see him. He's in great physical condition. He's excited to be here and he's on the taxi squad tonight. So he's here in LA, he threw a bowl pen session. He could be activated tomorrow, but that's not a certainty. So when he does come back, he will be a relief pitcher and it's something that he told me in spring training. He's really embracing.

25:47Unfortunately, from spring training on, his shoulder was not cooperating. So he's been in Arizona for the last three weeks after only throwing about 15 innings in the minor league season this year. So he's a fresh arm and I think he has a real clarity as far as his role and his opportunity that makes him as soon as tomorrow. David on paper, this series, it kind of looks like a mismatch. You got a 83 win Dodgers team going up against a nationals team that, you know, 67-75, but they got some young bats and some young arms. Should the Dodgers sweet this series? I think they should. I know the nationals have CJ Abrams and James Wood, but that's about it. I mean, they don't have much else. Their offense, though, is one of the top in baseball, but their pitching staff is one of the worst. They got a lot of young inexperienced pitchers and they just give up a lot of runs and their bullpen gives up even more. So the Dodgers can put up some runs not just against their starters, but certainly against their relievers and, you know, this offense should be able to hang in there with the nationals

26:51offense. And the Dodgers are throwing out Blake's nail tonight. I would imagine that the nationals have not seen a guy like him as far as when they put up their big numbers. And James Wood was on the IEL with an oblique strain. This is only his second game back. So there's a lot of rust with their best hitter. Well, all those Dodger fans get ready to take their seats there at Uniclefield in Dodger Stadium. They're going to notice no Freddy Freeman in the line of David. It's Kike Hernandez at first base. Everything's okay. Everything's okay, but he is approaching 37 years old. He's playing virtually every day. Dave Roberts just noticed that maybe he needed to take the night off and just reenergize for the last few games of this homestand because you got to manage these guys as we go down the stretching, keep their legs as fresh as possible. And we all know Freddy doesn't want to sit. But again, Dave Roberts protecting Freddy from himself. No doubt about it. Great stuff, David. David will be back with the manager. Dempsey hits a long shot to left field and the Dodgers break the scoreless tie. They lead one to nothing on Dempsey's home run. 30:54We'll wait and see 24 hours from now. We'll show Hay O'Connie being the lineup. They Roberts meeting with the members of the meeting of the Sanctus. They will cross that bridge tomorrow. They have conversations and hopefully he's going to be all right. Also, Rokis Isaki had an extended bullpen session earlier today and it appeared to be going in a fine fashion on the interlist because of the blister. The blister was covered as he was throwing. But as I was walking in, looked down into the bullpen and he was bringing it. I didn't have very good velocity. Did you notice something else about that bullpen session who was standing in? Everybody. Yeah, everybody including the manager. And then in the interview room he said he felt more comfortable in the interview room that he did standing at home plate. And he even said, hey, hitting is difficult. Yeah, no doubt. No doubt. Dodgers have made it difficult until last night. And maybe good news that Teosca Hernandez who had the other two run doubled to the walkoff win. Hopefully that as a sign is some very good things to happen because he's swinging about

31:57much, much better over the last number of games and hopefully that just continues. It feels like, and he said this as much after the game that he needs to just forget about the rest of the last six weeks and just play with some joy. And it looks like in the last seven games he's playing with joy. He's got to play for today. And that's it. You cannot make up for yesterday and the day before that and the weeks and the months ahead of time. This is about crunch time. And for this Dodger Broncliffe we mentioned before, you know, from top to bottom, oh, they're getting some pretty good performances here and there, including Tommy Edmond last night was terrific. Um, bats are swinging the bat better at present time, but they need some more guys in that fold. Will Smith back in the lineup again tonight as he's come off the interlist, a limited number of games. Oh, yeah, but this is still a ball club, David. That is lost six of the last nine. And it has not been losing six of nine against teams that you would really list as murderers row. No doubt. Hey, Rick, there's a sign that just came into the booth. You amongst other longtime Dodger employees are going to be honored tonight.

32:58And I know that's part of what makes the Dodgers very special. They they try to continue what the old Malley started years ago. Well, you know, you start to look at different things. Uh, this has been a big item. The Dodgers here in Southern California for a lot of different reasons. And on this date, 1966, the Dodgers became the first team to draw two million fans, both on the road and at home. That was the first time that was ever done and that really kind of set the president. But this is a big deal. And for the Dodgers that every year honoring those that have been here throughout the years and in really making this kind of a home away from home for many of us for great number years is is special. I talked to a couple of the longtime employees that are going to be honored tonight that worked with the old Malley under the old Malley. And they said, it was a time and place that will never be recaptured because of how Walter and Peter on Malley treated to people that worked here like part of their O'Malley family. Yeah, no, and that's what it was referred to as family.

33:59And he started to look at what the stadium offered then and what it offers now. There's so many different venues within the stadium that you can come out early and in real economy. So by the way, David, watch what you say because we're we're double barreling you right now because it's not only me, the Charlie Steiner is on the headset as well. So just to watch your peace and fuse in the remaining two minutes if you got here. I'm always I'm always watching what I'm saying in this booth now. Where are your things and where are your cubes? Yeah, no doubt. That's my check some balances right now. That is. Yeah. So you did you did not get the same phone calls last night as you got the night before. No, everybody was either preoccupied for some reason or were were a couple of callers basically just kind of wait and wait and wait to see if the Dodgers lose. And then all of a sudden their phones work. Yeah, just left your teams. Rick, you spoiled the Dodger fans in the late 70s and early 80s and this team has certainly spoiled them. This has been a wonderful ride, David.

34:59Not just the last two years back to back world championships, but this is kind of special. And I've said it over and over because I believe it. When you come into the gates here, Dodgers stadium, you leave reality with one of the ticket takers. Unfortunately, they give it back to us as we leave the stadium every night. This is high and tight. All right, it is that time of the week. We get to check in with Dave Roberts. The manager's meeting presented by Downey Hyundai. Dave, thanks a lot for the time. And certainly good to talk to you after a much needed win last night. Last night was good. You know, Teos has been grinding it as we all know. And the last couple, that series actually, sung about really well. And he came with that big hit that we needed. So hopefully, you know, that'll free some guys up. And, you know, we can build on the momentum last night. Teos seems to be one of those guys that if you get him thinking too much about the mechanics, the strike zone, it doesn't seem like it works as much as him playing with joy. And it feels like the last week he's played with a lot of joy. Yeah, it's funny. I was with the guy today at lunch. And we were talking about Teos, hit and, you know, joy is the word that came up.

42:29You know, he's an energy giver. He's a great teammate. The sun flare seeds. And as he scuffles, that joy sort of gets sucked out of him. And to your point of just kind of see ball hit ball, go out there and compete. You know, things have fallen and lined up for him. And when he's producing and performing, that joy you felt in the clubhouse or in the dugout last night. I know we haven't talked about this before either, but is it fair to say you don't get this all-star version of Andy Pahez without Teosca Hernandez being there with him the last couple of years? Without a doubt. Without a doubt. You know, in baseball, we have teammates in life and in business. They have mentors. With Teo and Andy, it's a family situation. It's a big brother, little brother. And, you know, they go to lunch together, they write a bus together.

43:30They talk together, they're each other's lockers. And I do think that Andy having Teo around to kind of show him the ropes, love on them, support them, challenge them at times, has certainly, you know, led to Andy being a first-time all-star. Speaking of Andy Pahez, your hitting coach, Andy Aaron Bates, told me the other day that Andy's going around telling you guys that he's pain-free and he may be swinging a bat soon. I guess that's encouraging. Yeah, that is encouraging. All bones still take four weeks, six weeks to heal or whatever, but I was giving him some grief yesterday about getting his spikes on swinging a bat getting in there. And he said only one more week, but the trainer gave me the matumbo and said, that is not true. So it is going to be sooner than I think people expect. Maybe not as soon as Andy expects, but you can see, I mean, not having his bat in there. It affects our club. That's the voice of the manager, Dave Roberts presented by Downey Hyundai, our weekly managers meeting.

44:31And today, for the second straight game, you don't have show Hey O'Tani in the starting lineup. Where is this headed? I know you might be getting tired of asking, answering O'Tani questions, but he's a big PCer lineup and where is this going? Yeah, I absolutely get the questions. I think right now, I think the easy answer is this day to day. I do know that once we hit the three days of inactivity, there are days that you can't get back as far as back dating. So we'll have to make a decision on that fourth day, but right now, yeah, yesterday down, today down. And again, I haven't seen him today. So we'll see how tomorrow goes, but yeah, that's it's more of a reading reacting. But yeah, I mean, I hope to avoid the I.O. But if that's what's best for show Hey, that's what we're going to do. Yeah, Tommy Edmond certainly has done a nice job filling in wherever you need him. When it comes to O'Tani,

45:32I know you have the best relationship with him, but even at that level, how honest do you think you can get the feedback from him about how his right side is feeling? Yeah, you know, I think that and I think that you mentioned at the other day in the scrum about my dealings with Clayton and great players that, you know, even when they're not 100%, they want to be the guy they want to go out there and then sometimes they might not disclose how hurt they are. Show he's certainly in that bucket. I can tell, you know, when he gets more irritable for show Hey, then he's not feeling well. I do have a good relationship with him. Yeah, and I do think that we've kind of taken his thoughts and opinions and kind of mixed with the training stuff and medical and coaches as well. But, you know, this is a time right now, we just have no margin as we sit here in September to potentially compromise the postseason. So, again, whatever we can do in the short term to get him ready for October is what we're going to do.

46:37Another player that looks at you as a father figure is the guy starting tonight, Blake Snell, Snell Zilla on a Friday. I mean, it seems like you're the one guy and he seems to be, he reminds me of Shaquille O'Neill in the respect where he has so much respect for authority. And that's kind of a military background type of thing. I know his dad was not in the military, but it reminds me of that is that the relationship you feel? I mean, he really does respect your authority. Well, it's good to hear. And I think that is true. I think what Blake, like most players, want to hear is honesty. And I think that, you know, we've had some tough conversations as far as in the last couple of years about, you know, what he expects from himself, what I expect, what the team expects and challenge him. I think he likes to be challenged, but knowing all the wild that we're here, I'm here to support him. So I think that we are as close as you can get.

47:39And like I said, when he first came back, he's on a mission. And I've had him for two years, but this look that he's got right now is as good as I've seen. Do you love when you challenge a player that he responds and reminds you that he answered that challenge? Yeah, I do. I do, because I think, you know, when you're trying to win 11 games in October, you know, all players are going to say they want to be challenged. They want to be, you know, spoken to and be in honestly, right? But the ones that say that and you challenge them and they don't respond back with performance, then you know what you got. And so fortunately for me, we got a lot of players that answer the bell when they are challenged. Before I go, obvious question, Freddie Freeman, not in the starting lineup. Just one of those, hey, Freddie, you got to sit down for a day. Yeah, so I'm giving him a day. If you talk to Freddie, he's saying he's getting benched. You know, we lean on Freddie so much and long road trip off day. And then just I just saw last night

48:41he was gassed. And so before his tank is completely empty, I just thought it'd be smart to give him tonight off. Hey, that's why he's the manager.
