Good people, what's up, what's up, it's Questlove.
So recently I had the incredible opportunity to have a real conversation with actress and
producer Jamie Lee Curtis from routines to recovery, true lies, and a certain Jermaine
Jackson music video.
Jamie is real and raw and there's something I really admire about her.
I am so happy that I'm the head-f***ing charge at 67 that I have the perspective that
I have at my age.
To really be able to put all of this into context.

You're listening to Bill Handel on demand from KFI AM640.
KFI Handel here on a Thursday morning march 19 and some of the stories we are looking
at.
$217 a barrel.
I think that's Brent Crude.
And now if I'm not mistaken, it is down to $93, am I right on that one, Amy?
I mean, it is bouncing like crazy.
It's bouncing around the on from our market watch.
It's at 97, but that's different than the Brent Crude number.
Okay.
Yeah.
Well, I think are they saying Brent Crude at 93?
I don't know because Brent Crude is usually more expensive, I think.
Okay.
Moving on.
It's up at 105.
Okay.
Moving on.
This is a story that is, I've been reporting, we've been reporting on it for the last couple
of days.
And it is far bigger than I thought and it has to do with Caesar Chavez and it has to
do with the allegations, I mean, keep in mind, he died in 1993.
So this is way after the fact.
But what's coming out is the story about his partner, Dolores Huerta, who founded
the United Farm Workers with him.
I mean, she was a full partner.
And as you know, in the history of the labor movement, the American labor movement, the
two of them just changed, changed the entire world on that one.
National attention to the brutal working conditions and the wages.
I talked about that yesterday.
Agricultural workers were effectively treated like the worst of the slaves during the 1800s.
And Chavez was the leader.
But Huerta within the movement also a legend, a mother, independent mother, passion for
addressing social issues, women's rights, poverty, racism.
And when Chavez died in 93, she took over the reigns of the United Farm Workers Union.
At 95, she still wears this mantle of sort of one of the leaders, well, actually, yeah,
one of the leaders of this movement.
And here is the story that has come out that for six decades, Huerta said she was keeping
a secret.
And what kind of a secret?
She said that Chavez had raped her in the 1960s.
And she kept it under wraps until the New York Times blew open the story.
And that the story was that Chavez had sexually abused two underage girls in the 1970s.
And by the way, this rape was separate to that.
And Huerta said she felt manipulated and pressured to have sex with Chavez.
The first time, the second time, it was an out and out rape.
And she said both encounters led to pregnancies.
She hid that at the time and then adopted the two kids out to other families.
I'm, she, this is a quote, I carry the secret for as long as I did because building the
movement was my life's work.
And I wasn't going to let Caesar or anyone else get in the way because that would have been
a huge story and may have taken the attention away.
The New York Times quoted to women who said that she had sexually assaulted them as girls
when they were, this was back in the 1970s.
Now, a little bit about Huerta and then I'm going to go into the end of this segment.
And then next, what do they do with Chavez's reputation?
What do schools do, what do communities do?
But back to Huerta.
After her parents divorced, her grandfather helped raise her and her two brothers while
her mom, Alicia, waited tables during the day and worked at night at a cannery.
And eventually her mom bought a small hotel in restaurant and gave free lodging to migrant
farmers and their family.
So Huerta earned a teaching degree, taught English in the Central Valley, but saw the poverty.
And even in the classroom and decided she was going to help in some way.
She met Chavez in the late 50s by the early 60s.
They had co-founded the National Farm Workers Association and the Union.
Chavez became president.
As we know, Huerta became vice president.
And Chavez received all the public attention when he had the fast that Robert Kennedy broke
the fast with him.
Huerta was this advocate, a voice for women in the agricultural movement, the agricultural
community and for the rest of the nation among workers.
And it's a story and this I have this conversation with Lindsay all the time where she talks about
women just not getting the credit, not being treated the same.
And I said, that's not necessarily true.
But the more of these stories that come out, the more I agree.
And then the consumer boycott of table grapes.
Remember that?
Uva is no.
And Uva's grapes were left rotting in supermarkets.
And finally, the union broke the back of the owners of the great farms.
And then it all pushed for better working conditions.
It's she was ruptured hospitalized with a ruptured spleen and fracture ribs after she was beaten
by the police during a demonstration.
And she was open.
She said, say, sir, and I had our differences mainly about tactics.
And in an interview with a Smith, with it, choose me with a Smithsonian, she talked about
the challenge of being a woman in a union dominated by Chavez and men.
And the nonprofit, the United Farm Workers Union, this really just smashed them when you
talk about being blindsided, they issued a statement on Wednesday, applauding her decision
to share her story.
That's where they're going.
Well we acknowledge the weight of this moment, the allegations.
We remain focused, determined, and inspired to serve our community with the same relentless
determination she modeled for us.
And so what ends up happening, and I want you to note that no one is refuting the Chavez
did this.
No one is saying no, no one is saying no organization is saying these are simply allegations.
Nothing is proven here.
So these are disgruntled members of the union.
No one's saying that.
Everybody is accepting this is fact and now they are spinning and what do you do to United
Farm Workers that he created, not being refuted.
And how about the schools and the streets and the parks and the libraries that bear his
name, statues, holidays establishing his honor.
Well elected officials and organizations are now spinning, what do they do?
Well, a lot of them are calling for a change, a whole group, a steady stream of leaders.
Communities across the state are reevaluating the way that Chavez has been memorialized.
Gavin Newsom has said no decision has been made yet, but there is a sense of urgency.
Why?
Because March 31 is Caesar Chavez day in California, and he said, if we need to move,
we're going to do it together.
Now, here is the problem.
Officials want to continue honoring the farm worker labor movement.
But Caesar Chavez is so connected that it is going to be hard to attack or disown him
without already somehow affecting the union itself.
So this is really tough for everybody there.
The intersection of Sunset Boulevard, that becomes Caesar, where Sunset Boulevard, and it
turns into Caesar, each have his avenue.
What do they do?
You have to be Brooklyn.
Brooklyn Avenue.
Yeah, and then they change it.
And now you've got a whole coalition of nonprofits and faith-based groups and community leaders.
They've launched a change.org petition, and want to rename it Dolores Huerta Avenue.
LA City Council member Isabel Horado, who's district includes Boyle Heights, where the
avenue is now named for Caesar Chavez, called for the renaming of all public locations,
all events that bear his name.
Man, what do we do with that?
City Council member Miguel Adias, this is Fresno City Council member, said public streets
and building names are meant to honor individuals who uplift the community, represent our highest
values.
Not so much.
Not with Caesar Chavez.
So you've got the Latino civil rights movement, political, educational ecosystem.
You're not grappling with this.
I wouldn't want to be in the movement.
At the same time that Caesar Chavez is, his reputation is being destroyed, and probably
rightly so, because I'm going to take it at face value that he did exactly what he's
accused of, because no one is saying no.
No one is in a circle is saying no.
The people that worked with him, but no one is saying no.
I don't even think his family has come out and said, no, I think his family came out
and said that it's disturbing and all this things, but I don't think anybody's pushing
back at all.
Yeah.
And we, I mean, we're here at I Heart.
I mean, we're dealing with, we have to change the name of our newsroom.
It's the Caesar Chavez newsroom here at I Heart.
Is that right?
Yeah.
I hadn't heard that.
You hadn't known that.
Had you?
You know, what's crazy built?
I remember as a little kid seeing the farm workers eagle on things in my house.
My dad had t-shirts with it.
I remember old silk screens, because he had done that at one time was an artist doing silk
screens.
That's one of the first that Aztec eagle stylized is one of the first images burned
into my brain as a small kid.
Well, he, that is, and all of that.
Yeah.
That kind of pedestal that he was on, boy, when you fall, you fall quickly.
Okay.
Moving over to American Airlines.
If you're an American Airlines membership account, if you have miles since December, they've
been frozen.
You, it's frozen at 55,361 miles.
That's it.
Done.
That's it.
It's most you're ever going to get if you are in economy.
And for basically a dozen years, those lowest fair tickets have been wonderful for budget
travelers willing to trade some comforts for a cheaper price.
Now, man, comforts have disappeared completely.
Perks have disappeared.
Do you know there was a time when you would get on a, you get on a coach seat and you would
get a meal, even for a short flight?
Well, today, what are you getting?
Well, you're getting peanuts.
Well, excuse me, you were getting bags of peanuts.
And now the peanuts are past their use by date, right there on the little package.
I mean, it is getting very, very tough.
So what's going on?
Well, and this is a real gamble the airlines are taking because they're moving away from
any kind of perk you can possibly imagine.
Taking away qualifying for miles, they're moving in that category, change fees, non-refundable
fees, which has been around.
And they started all of this because they had to compete with airlines like Frontier,
Spirit, Allegiant, which were selling no perks for a very cheap price.
So they did the same thing.
And so now they offer a basic or light economy class, which means no perks at all.
And here, the big one, by the way, is you don't get a science seeding until the last minute.
And if you are a family, you're going to be bounced all over the cabin, usually in
a middle seat, usually as near to the toilet as they can possibly produce for you.
I had no idea there were middle seats that near the toilet going halfway up the airplane
for people that buy coach tickets.
It is, it has gotten really bad that's, I don't know if you fly super cheap.
And I have, in fact, I'm going on my vacation and I bought the non-refundable seat.
And if it turns out that I can't go, then it's going to really tag me.
I mean, I will be able to change, I get a credit, but it cost me $250 a seat plus I have
to pay whatever additional fares there out there.
So United charged a $65 to gate check a bag.
In other words, putting the bag up in the overhead and are now being charged by these budget
airlines, which is every airline.
And it all had to do.
And the reason perks are there and the miles are there is to establish a loyalty program.
If you fly our airline, we're going to give you these miles where eventually you are
going to be able to use them for a ticket credit towards a ticket.
And it used to be that the miles were not that extraordinary to get a ticket.
Well over the years, they've been increasing the number of miles necessary where today,
if you want an upgrade, it'll cost you 800,000 miles.
Now keep in mind that you use a credit card and let's say a dollar a mile is typically
what they give you.
And so if you buy 800,000 dollars worth of goods on your credit card, then you're going
to get 800,000 miles.
That is probably good for one business class ticket.
It is very tough today flying.
And the airlines, they don't make money on coach, which I don't understand.
They make money on business class.
Do three or four coach seats?
Are they less profitable than one business class seat because they take up more room?
I've never understood that for me.
I really haven't.
But if I business, you're treated well.
You fly economy.
It's getting harder and harder.
And loyalty programs are basically gone because who has loyalty anymore?
If you don't get any perks, if you're not getting anything from it, why would you be loyal?
Now there are, there's a lot of deep stuff in this one.
There are a lot of moving pieces because part of what he said is true for a few drugs.
And then an argument is even if the drugs are more expensive here, there are countries
where if you look at the cost of living, et cetera, then the drugs are cheaper.
I mean, a whole lot of different analysis and formulas.
The bottom line drugs are not cheaper in this country.
Some are, no question about it, but very, very few.
And the comparison was made with the New York Times and a couple of German organizations
compared, basically Germany to the United States in terms of drugs, virtually across the
board, Germany and the rest of Europe and the rest of the world.
Drugs are far cheaper.
And the president can argue that drugs are cheaper and there is some argument about it.
For the most part, no, because we don't have a national system because we have a pharmaceutical
industry that is way, way too powerful.
We have the distribution system where you have a few major distributors of those drugs,
buying drugs, and then selling them, distributing them on behalf of the pharmaceutical companies,
way, way too powerful.
And the price goes up.
And the price is way up.
Now a couple of things, you don't hear much about how gas prices have dropped.
That one is a little tougher to sell you.
Even I think the most ardent magas supporters who believe everything the president says are
looking at the pump and going, yep, prices are down, just like promised.
That is going to be a little tougher.
And there in lies a real problem.
There's hyperbole there that the president engages in.
And a lot of it is, presidents or anybody's allowed in hyperbole.
I mean, we do hyperbole all the time.
This is the best product in the world, word of the finest, you know, it's just what you
hear.
I mean, you're allowed to do that.
What you can't say as a matter of course is our prices are less than and they're not,
you're not allowed to say that.
And that is where the line is crossed and that is exactly what happened here.
The only way that prices can really drop is when entire countries negotiate with the
manufacturers.
And now you're talking some real ammunition.
You're talking real leverage.
And there are some countries that simply say if you don't sell us this price, drugs at
this price, we're not going to deal with you.
There is a, and it's not apocryphal.
I think this happened France was negotiating with one of the big drug makers and one of
these drug makers only had there was the only person, the only group in the world that
had this particular drug was patented and no one else had it.
There was no generics.
There was nothing close to it.
And the, and friends said, this is what we're willing to pay.
And the drug companies said, well, too bad because you're not going to have this drug
then.
And France said, fine.
We're not going to sell any of your drugs in this country.
They caved.
And it's literally going to take that.
So when we hear that through Trump Rx, what a shocker there's Trump Rx prices are, we
have the lowest prices in the world of any drugs.
You go ahead and believe that.
Knock your socks off.
Right.
Oh, by the way, the war is over.
It was over day one.
I just want to point that out.
And the nuclear program in Veron was totally decimated, obliterated, wait a minute.
The nuclear program last week was intact and the attack was going to happen within a
matter of days.
They were going to have the bomb, okay, which way is it?
That's why I get so upset.
I know those.
I get a lot of hassle from a lot of people because you think I'm anti-Trump and I am for
the most part.
You know, I want to be honest, but I want you to refute anything I say.
Tell me that's not true.
Tell me when I say this is what the president said, you tell me he didn't say it.
That's very, very tough words for a guy that doesn't have to go through all the talkbacks.
Because I'm going to have to listen to all the people refuting you, sir.
That's correct.
Yeah.
And what are they going to say?
Prices at the pump are down, right, bills lying.
Are you going to hear that?
Probably.
Okay.
All right.
Coming up.
Oh, there is a strike happening.
April 24th.
Teachers are walking out the door at LA Unified.
I'll get into that when we return KFI AM640.

court, we've got you covered on the podcast, flagrant, and funny.
Do you want to start with the first message for the big-tier and coach of the year?
Oh, what do you like to do?
Did you like that?
Yeah, I should have done that.
Are we going to buy a coat?
You're a Spartan, is that what I'm exactly?
On flagrant and funny, we're giving our unfilter takes on the biggest moments,
the conversations everyone's having, so whether your bracket is busted,
or you just want the latest on the tournament, we got you.
Listen to flagrant and funny, we carry champion and Jamel Hill on the iHeartRadio app,
Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
Presented by Capital One, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sport.
Good people, what's up, what's up, it's Questlove.
So recently I had the incredible opportunity to have a real conversation with actors and producer
Jamie Lee Curtis from routines to recovery, true lies, and a certain Germain Jackson music video.
Jamie is real and raw, and there's something I really admire about her.
I am so happy that I'm the head-f***ing charge at 67, that I have the perspective,
that I have at my age, to really be able to put all of this into context.

Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts.
