Well a scary situation unfolded for about 70 skiers this week in upstate New York after
1:21
they became stranded in the Gondola cabins, ferrying them up Gormountain on Wednesday.
1:27
The ski resort is located in North Creek, New York, and the Northwoods Gondola experienced
1:32
a mechanical issue, prompting a large-scale response to safely bring everybody back to
1:40
Video captured by bystanders at Gormountain showed the cabins swaying slightly in the wind
1:46
The cabins were between 5 and 20 miles per hour, with temperatures around 22 on Wednesday,
1:52
and AccuWeather real-field temperatures in the teens.
1:56
No injuries were reported, and the Northwoods Gondola reopened Thursday, with officials
2:00
saying the issue was caused by a mechanical alignment problem.
2:05
It's kind of a good thing that happened on Wednesday when you consider that the weather
2:10
this weekend is brutally cold in the area.
2:14
The weather's Jonathan Porter delivered some harsh news for those in the Northeast saying
2:18
the deep freeze has returned this weekend.
2:21
The combination of Arctic air and gusty winds could make it feel colder than any other
2:26
point so far this winter for many in the region.
2:29
In short, it's going to feel painfully cold to be outside, even for just a few minutes.
2:35
The blast of Arctic air is coming directly from the frozen tundra north of Hudson Bay
2:40
Canada, and it will bring dangerous conditions, and yet another surge in energy demands to
2:45
over 100 million utility customers in the north-eastern part of the U.S.
2:51
The Arctic blast this weekend is but part of a long-running bout of well-below historical
2:56
average temperatures.
2:58
AccuWeather's Dan Dupadwin said that in many parts of the Northeast, away from the coast,
3:02
this prolonged stretch of cold is the most extreme and at least the last decade, and in
3:07
some areas, the last two decades.
3:09
Many locations will end up with a streak of days below freezing that falls into the top
3:14
10 longest such streaks on record.
3:16
The leading edge of the Arctic air or the front will travel southeastward across the region
3:22
into this afternoon, almost immediately behind that front, harsh gusty winds will pick
3:27
up from the northwest.
3:29
As the actual temperature plummets, so will the AccuWeather real-field temperature, and
3:34
it will head well below zero.
3:36
The worst conditions in terms of wind and cold will be from the eastern part of the
3:40
Great Lakes to the mid-Atlantic coast.
3:43
In New England, the worst conditions will be from tonight and to tomorrow, with real-field
3:48
temperatures dipping 10-20 degrees below zero in much of the northeast, and in the coldest
3:54
locations, such as over the ridges and along flat open land and lakeshore areas, real-field
3:59
temperatures could plummet to 25-40 degrees below zero for a period of time.
4:05
Now, at that level, frostbite can set in quickly, and there is a high risk of hypothermia,
4:11
if not properly dressed.
4:13
Those spending any time outdoors this weekend, including skiers, snowboarders, snowmobulers,
4:18
taking advantage of some of the best snow conditions in years, well, you should know
4:21
to use extreme caution.
4:24
Much of the landscape along the frigid air's route is snow-covered and frozen, with
4:28
the only large freshwater body without extensive ice being lake Ontario.
4:33
The extent of the ice has disrupted ferry service in some coastal metro areas and damaged
4:39
fishing piers on some of the bays, and along the Atlantic coast, ice coverage will increase
4:44
further this weekend.
4:46
Conditions along and immediately behind the Arctic front will range from flurries to steady
4:52
light snow to even heavy bursts of snow and snow squalls.
4:56
A coating of under-and-enchip snow is expected across a wide area of the northeast, from
5:01
central Virginia all the way to northern Maine through this evening.
5:06
Some of the heaviest snow, with an accumulation of 3-6 inches, will fall along the shores
5:11
of Lake Ontario, the mountains on West Virginia, possibly in parts of southeastern New England,
5:16
with the acu-weather local storm-max of around 10 inches.
5:20
As the center of the Arctic air or high-pressure slides over the northeast Sunday, winds will
5:26
ease a bit, but it will be frigid.
5:29
The actual temperatures starting the day on Sunday will be well below zero over upstate
5:33
New York and northern New England.
5:36
Temperatures will dip into the single digits as far south as southeastern Virginia early
5:42
Now, there is some good news, at least for those in the southeast states, as the core of
5:48
this Arctic blast will focus up north.
5:52
And there's some good news for all starting next week.
5:55
Air originating from the Pacific Ocean will travel eastward across the nation during
5:58
weeks 2 and 3 of February.
