God doesn't have any problems at creating anything.

If He can put stars with a billion's out there, everyone in its perfect orbit

that He can certainly make a holy city, a heaven-less city.

And this is why John was absolutely old when He saw this absolute thing of beauty coming

down.

Listen, 1500 miles high, 1500 miles wide, 1500 miles long.

And what was it readying?

It was radiating the glory of Almighty God.

There are tasty desserts that we say are heavenly.

There are beautiful places we describe as heavenly.

So it seems we think of heaven as the epitome of wonderfulness.

But how much can we know about the place where Christians will spend eternity?

Today on In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley, we'll continue our focus on the future of

the church, with a biblical introduction to a place called heaven.

If I should ask you, how many of you are planning to go to heaven when you die?

What would you say?

He said, well, sure I am.

Well, I really think that most people think when they die, they're going to heaven.

I think somehow deep down inside they think they are.

Now they don't necessarily know exactly why they're going or what it's going to be like.

Don't know much about it and probably most of what they know about it.

They didn't get from God's word, but they just heard here and there.

But most people probably think that somehow the other, they're going to make it.

Well, that's not necessarily true.

In fact, probably most people are not going there.

Most people don't know anything about it.

And the tragedy is most people don't know how to get there, even if they knew something

about heaven.

So I want you to turn to two passages.

First of all, in John chapter 14, the first three verses.

And then Revelation chapter 21, those first three verses.

John chapter 14, the first three verses, and you'll recall that Jesus, the night before

he was crucified, said this to his disciples.

He said to them, in John, let not your heart be troubled, believe in God, believe also

in me.

In my father's house are many dwelling places.

If it were not so, I would have told you, for I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself

that where I am there, you may be also.

And then if you'll turn to Revelation chapter 21, and you recall these last two chapters

are primarily about heaven.

He says in the 21st chapter, beginning in the first verse, John now remember, he sees

this as a vision as a revelation from the Lord Jesus, and he said, and I saw a new heaven

and a new earth.

But the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.

And I saw the holy city in New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready

as a bride adorned for her husband.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, behold the tabernacle of God is among men,

and he shall dwell among them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be among

them.

Now let me say right up front, there is not anybody alive who is adequate to talk about

heaven.

Because there is so much, and yet, even though there is so much revealed, there is so

much that is unrevealed by God, all we have I believe is a little sketch of what heaven's

going to be like.

And I say again, also that the only legitimate, real genuine trustworthy truth about heaven

is all derived from one source, and that's the word of God.

Now, the big question that many people have about heaven is this, they say, well, where

is it going to be?

That is, if he's preparing a place for us, is it out yonder somewhere?

Well, God is certainly out there somewhere, and heaven is out there somewhere, but the

Bible says something that I believe that most people forget, and that is that heaven,

at first of all, is going to be right here on this globe of ours, and that says, now

wait a minute.

What about all those verses about passing away?

I'm coming to that.

But this earth, the way God created first of all, was heaven on earth, as we would say.

We hear people use that phrase heaven on earth, because it was the Garden of Eden.

And that wasn't just limited to one little space, this entire globe was the absolute expression

of the perfect power and love of God.

He created this globe in all of its perfection.

It was the expression of Himself in all of its beauty, all of its detail, all of its color,

all of its glory, all of its majesty.

This was the expression of God.

And then came sin in the fall in the Garden.

The Bible says that sin came into this world and what happens?

Then you've got briars and thorns and tornadoes and earthquakes and tidal waves and all

the things that bring about devastation in this life.

Well, what is going to happen is God just absolutely going to wipe away this earth

and just annihilate it?

No, He's not.

Well, go back, if you will, to Revelation chapter 21 now and notice what He says in this passage,

in the words He uses.

He says, and I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth passed away.

There was no longer in His sea.

And I saw the Holy City in New Jerusalem coming down.

Now, He says the first earth and the first heaven passed away.

What does that mean?

It does not mean annihilation.

That Greek word means that something either moves from here to yonder or that thing is changed

into something different, that is, it is renovated.

And so what happens is here, God is going to renovate this earth, destroy every living

vestige of anything here, it is going to be absolutely brand new.

When we think in terms of heaven, we think in terms of this renovated earth, like the

Garden of Eden, all of its absolute perfection, but that is only part of it because He says

the new heavens and a new earth and He says likewise a new Jerusalem.

Now when He talks about a new Jerusalem, He's talking about the city, not the city that

you and I know, but a city that He is building.

Listen to what He said.

I'm going away to prepare a place for you.

If I go in, prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself that

where I am, there you may be also.

So He says whatever He's preparing, He's going to be there.

So I want you to watch as we go along here because you're going to see where He is.

And now if you will notice, He says a new Jerusalem.

Now think about this.

If you look at this earth and see how perfectly God made it, and think about that Jesus

has been gone 2,000 years.

Now you say, well, He's been working on this new Jerusalem 2,000 years, or you know, you

and I can say, well, yeah, He's been up there hammering away and climbing ladders and doing

all these things, but we know better than that.

He could speak it into existence just that fast.

If He chose to, but He says, I'm going away to prepare a place for you.

Now you know, I don't know how He's doing all that, how He's making, how beautiful He's

making that place and how He's preparing it.

That's what He said He was doing.

So we believe He'll do exactly what He says He will do.

And He is the master builder.

So what He does in the revelation is He comes through this time of great tribulation.

There's so much destruction and war and bloodshed up on this earth.

He comes down to that...

With chapter the last part and he talks about the judgment and all the things that are going to happen.

And then he breaks that in this 21st chapter talking about a new heavens and a new earth and a new Jerusalem.

He gives us sort of a panoramic view of this holy city called New Jerusalem.

And this panoramic view begins with the outside and goes to the inside.

So I want us to see what he says remembering that the only legitimate knowledge that you and I have about heaven is what is given to us in the Word of God and everything else outside of that is conjecture.

It is all of us have arid is of what this could happen and that could have what it could be like.

What we know for certain is what he's placed for us here in the Word of God.

So I want you to notice this if you will that John is seeing this.

Here he is seeing this vision, this revelation that Jesus is giving him.

Notice what he says in this passage verse two.

I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God and he says it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

When you think about one of the most beautiful things there is in life, what do you think about?

You could go through lots of things but he says it's going to be the beauty of such.

It's going to be like a bride, a dawn for her husband on the day of the wedding.

Now wouldn't you say all you ladies know this?

You know that of the pinnacle of your thoughts of beauty, the moment that you would want to look the very, very best.

You're most beautiful.

Everything in its perfect place is the moment you walk down a aisle or stand down at the front of a church somewhere with the man that you're going to marry.

He says heaven, he says the holy city is going to look like.

The beauty of a bride, a dawn, dressed her best, looking her best for her husband.

He says that's what it's going to look like.

But notice something else he said about it.

If you'll go in verse 10, chapter 21.

And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God.

Her brilliance was like a very costly stone as a stone of clear crystal jasperate.

He says it will have the brilliance and the glory of Almighty God.

Then if you'll notice what he says in verse 12.

He says this city he noticed had a great high wall with 12 gates and at the gates 12 angels and the names were written on them, which were the 12 tribes of the sons of Israel.

There were three gates on each side, three on the east, three on the west, three on the north, three on the south.

And then he says and the wall of the city had 12 foundations, foundation stones and owned them with the 12 names of the treble apostles of the lamb.

And then if you'll notice what he says.

He says and the one who spoke with me, he had a goal measuring rod to measure the city and its gates and its wall.

And the city is laid out as a square and let's know what he says here.

He says it's laid out like a square.

This heavenly city coming down. Now watch this. He says it's 1,500 miles long, 1,500 miles wide and 1,500 miles high.

And I used to read that and think, how do we always going to get in there? No problem.

Listen, God doesn't have any problems that creating anything.

And this is why John was absolutely old when he saw this absolute thing of beauty coming down.

Listen, 1,500 miles high, 1,500 miles wide, 1,500 miles long.

And what was it radiating? It was radiating the glory of Almighty God.

Now if you'll notice he said in verse 18 and the material of the wall, the material of the wall was Jasper with a shine like a diamond.

When he saw it coming down, he said it was radiating like the glory of God.

And the city was pure gold like clear glass.

That's the way he saw it.

The foundation stones of the city wall were done with every kind of precious stone.

So if you go through those stones, you'll find all kinds of colors here.

That is gold, blue, green, yellow, purple, violet, red, white. These are the stones.

And he says, and the 12 gates were 12 pearls. One of the gates was a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

Now, when you and I try to visualize what this is going to be like, these earth demands of ours can no more conceive, adequately, accurately, completely, and sufficiently, anymore,

than you and I can conceive of the infinite power and the infinite knowledge and wisdom of Almighty God.

We are talking about a heavenly city. Our father has provided for us, and Jesus says he's gone to prepare for us, and listen,

there will be room enough for every single child of God all the way back from Adam to the last person who in is the Kingdom of God, there's going to be plenty of room for everybody.

And he says he has prepared it for all of us. He says there's some things that are going to be absent, some folks are going to be out of business.

Look if you will in this passage, and start if you will in verse 22 of this 21st chapter.

He says, and I saw no temple in the holy city, for the Lord God, the Almighty, and the Lamb are its temple, not go many church buildings, and we will worship not in a place, but the person of Almighty God Himself.

And now some of our time is certainly going to be spent in worship. We'll be worshiping him, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

He says there'll be no temple there, because the Lamb and the Father, the Lord God, are the temple.

He says likewise, there will be no Son and no moon. For notice if you will, he says the glory of God has illumined it, and the Lamb is the Lamb.

That is not going to be in light. For example, in the streets of heaven, not going to be in light post. He says because it's all going to be lit by the glory of God.

The brightness and the glory of the Lamb of God of Jesus, God the Father, God the Son will lighten all of heaven, this earth, and the Holy City so that there will be absolutely no need whatsoever for any kind of light, any kind of light in terms of light that you and I think about here.

He says these things will not be there. He says likewise, there's not going to be anything unclean in it.

Look if you will in the 27th verse of the 21st chapter.

He says, and nothing unclean, no one who practices abomination and lying, should ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of light.

There's not going to be any sin, no more pain, no more suffering, no more crying, no more tears.

None of the things that cause heartache in this life, he says they're all be gone, every single solitary one of them, no disappointments whatsoever.

Now, when I look at that, I think about something else that's going to be missing, is one other thing going to be missing.

What's going to be missing is some of you, because you see, I want you to listen to this contrast, this terrible contrast.

Watch this. Go back to the 20th chapter of the revelation.

And the 20th chapter and the last few verses is the great white throne judgment.

And this is where every lost person will stand and give an account for their life.

And he says they'll stand there. Look at that, let's read those verses.

And I saw a great white throne and him who's set upon it from whose presence the earth and heaven fled away, which means he's talking about the magic.

He says, the greatest majesty and power and the greatness and the glory of God will be such that he says it will be such as if the heavens and the earth nothing can stand in its presence, his presence.

He says, and I saw the dead, the great and the small, presidents down to poverty, standing before the throne, and the books were open.

And the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books according to their deeds. These are the books that have the works.

And the sea gave up the dead which were in it. Death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them. And they were judged to every one of them according to their deeds.

Now listen to this. And death and Hades are tall men.

We're thrown in the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.

If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he or she was thrown into the lake of fire.

Now look at that. Then move down one verse, chapter 21, verse 1, and I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven in the first earth for the past the way.

Here's what I want you to notice.

According to the Scriptures, there's only two places to go when you die.

One of them is heaven and the other one is hell. The Bible calls the final hell the lake of fire.

The final heaven is that heaven in the home. If a person dies the day without Christ, they go to tall men.

When a believer dies the day we go to paradise. The lost person dies the day we go to tall men.

After the judgment, the lost person in tall men goes to the lake of fire eternal hell having been judged and suffering accordingly.

My friend, listen to me carefully. If Jesus Christ is the Son of God and He is.

If He is truth in life and He is. If this Bible is true and it is, there are only two places to go when you die.

One of them is this glorious heaven and the other is this eternal separation from God called the lake of fire as there are two places.

When a person dies ultimately they're going to spend eternity with God, with Jesus, with their loved ones.

Are they going to spend eternity separated from everything that is good and God laying holy?

Would you not agree that a person is a fool to take the chance of dying without being able to know that you're going to heaven?

And so what I want to do is I want to tell you how to get there. This is how you get to heaven.

Not by being baptized in a church or confirmation or living up the rules and regulations and legalism and all these things.

There is only one way. Listen to what Jesus said.

This is the same Jesus and the same passage you said, I'm going to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I'll come again to receive that where I am there you may be also. This is what he said.

I am the way. Listen to that.

Now how do we come by Him?

We acknowledge and recognize and humble ourselves before Him that we are sinners, that we have a sinful nature been against God.

We are rebellious on the inside, and we need to be forgiven of our sins, and we need to be cleansed of our sin.

And we do believe that when Jesus went to Calvary, that He died and when God sent Him, He'd sent Him for this primary reason that placed upon Him all your sin and mine,

all the sin of all mankind from Adam till the last person, and every single person who is willing to ask for the forgiveness of their sin,

by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, death at Calvary, asking for forgiveness, believing in Jesus Christ as the Son of God,

and believing that He died for your sin, the moment you're willing to believe Him, the moment you're willing to receive Him,

He says, but His men has received Him, to them gave He the power to become the sons of God, the children of God, and inherit the kingdom of God.

And I want to challenge you, plead with you, think my friend, think if this is true and it is true,

you only have two choices, and I want to plead with you to make the wisest decision you can possibly make as a person.

Choose the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior by faith, choose to die and go to heaven because one of these days you are going to die.

And after death, no second chance. There's not one thread of Scripture that says you'll get a second chance.

You're only hope is here and now, and you're only hope is in the person of Jesus Christ, and that is my prayer for you,

that you would receive Him as your Savior, and your Master, and make heaven for absolute certain. It is your eternal home.

Believers will be in heaven when they die. And it's not just a state of mind. It's a real place. Here's a moment with Charles Stanley.

When you think about this, you have to think about it in terms of the way Jesus talked about it.

He said, for example, that heaven is not a thinkmen of the imagination. It is not a fantasy. It is not a dream. It's not something people think of.

You will go to some schools or some seminaries or colleges. And when somebody's talking about the Bible, they'll say that heaven's not a real place.

There's no real resurrected body. All these things are spiritual. They're not real. They're not material.

They're a thinkmen of the imagination. Dreams people have. And if heaven is in your mind and heaven is on earth.

But listen to what Jesus said. If I believe that Jesus Christ is a son of God, then I've got to believe it tells the truth.

And he does tell the truth because he said he was truth. And here's what he said. I go to prepare a dream for you.

Is that what he said? No. He said, I go to prepare what? A place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you,

I will come again and receive you to myself that where I am, there you may be.
