The New York Giants wouldn't really draft a running back at number 5 overall, right?
0:54
You are Lockdown Giants, your daily New York Giants Podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast
1:00
Network, your team every day.
1:06
Hello New York Giants fans, I'm Patricia Trayna, your host and welcome to today's Lockdown
1:12
Giants Podcast episode.
1:14
And on today's episode, the last time the Giants drafted a running back in the top five,
1:19
they really didn't get much out of it.
1:22
So would they really seriously be considering doing it again this year?
1:26
That's will be our first topic on today's show and then in segment 2, head coach John
1:31
Harbott, told reporters at the leak meeting on Monday what he wants the offense to look
1:37
So how close are they to actually fulfilling his wish list?
1:41
And then finally, we'll wrap things up with, is it that big of a deal that the Giants
1:45
don't have a third round draft pick, right?
1:48
So that's our list of topics for today.
1:50
Let's get right into today's episode.
1:53
All right, so the Giants are in a position now where they did a lot in free agency and
2:00
in their minds, they have given themselves a lot of different options as to which direction
2:04
they can go in the draft.
2:07
Now if you have been watching the shows this week, you know I had Damien Parson of Lockdown
2:11
NFL Draft On and he was of the opinion that this year's draft class is not really
2:18
the strongest of classes that, you know, this is the type of class where you just throw
2:22
a positional value out the window and you kind of go for best player regardless of the
2:30
So that being said, that's raised a question about would the New York Giants consider
2:36
drafting a guy like running back Jeremiah Love out of Notre Dame with the fifth overall
2:45
Now people are split on this and I think the majority of the people who have weighed in
2:50
on this topic have been on the opinion that no, they should not go there because luck.
2:55
They drafted Safe 1 Barclay back in 2018 with the second overall pick and they should
3:00
have traded down which, you know, they should have.
3:03
And oh, by the way, how many Super Bowls did the Giants win with Safe 1 Barclay on the
3:09
How many playoffverts did they have with Safe 1 Barclay on the roster?
3:14
And they didn't go very far in the playoffs.
3:18
I think they won the wild card and then they were bounced out in the division around.
3:23
So people are remembering that and they're saying, no, no, no, don't try out the running
3:27
back at fifth overall, you know, fifth overall.
3:31
Go and get sunny styles if he's on the board.
3:34
Get Caleb Downs if he's on the board.
3:36
Get anybody else, Carnell Pate if he is on the board.
3:40
Get anybody else except for Jeremiah Love, all right?
3:44
Now here's the thing folks and John Harbott and Joe Shane, when they spoke to the media
3:51
on Monday at the meetings, made some pretty good points.
3:57
This is not the same giant team as it was in that 2018 lead up to the draft.
4:06
The Giants now have their quarterback.
4:09
They have a left tackle.
4:11
They have a linebacker.
4:13
They've got tight ends.
4:15
They've got a defense tackle, no tackle.
4:19
They've got some depth now in the secondary.
4:22
They've got a whole new kicking battery.
4:25
They filled a lot of holes.
4:27
The offensive line is four fifths return from master, okay?
4:31
They still have holes, obviously right guard.
4:33
They could probably use more depth in the running game, whether it be, you know, Jeremiah
4:40
They've got pieces, whereas back in 2018, the Giants didn't really have a whole lot
4:48
If you remember, Eli Manning was approaching the end of his career.
4:54
They drafted Saekwon Barkley to take some of the onus off of Eli, who was coming off
5:00
of, I think, two straight years of attempting more than 600 passes.
5:05
And they felt at the time that Saekwon would take some of that pressure off of Eli, that
5:10
giving him a running back would help Eli ease into, you know, the final years or however
5:16
many years left he had, which I think was one more year after that 2018 season.
5:22
So that being said, the Giants are in a different space right now.
5:27
And when we talk about how the Giants roster is being built, everybody always says it's
5:34
got to be built around the quarterback, Jackson, dark.
5:38
So then does it make sense to add pieces on offense?
5:43
Now you could sit there and you'd say, well, he absolutely needs another receiver, because
5:48
who knows if the league neighbors is going to be ready to roll?
5:51
Eventually, he will, but who knows when?
5:54
The Giants have added at receiver.
5:56
They haven't really added in the run game, all right?
6:01
Now the thing with the run game is you give a quarterback a really, really good running
6:07
game, and you can check off a lot of different things, all right?
6:11
For example, you can keep drives alive with a mixture of the run and path, okay?
6:20
Last year, the Giants had 47 three-in-out plays, which was ranked 25th in the league, but
6:31
they already averaged 4.3 yards per rush play.
6:36
So while the three-in-outs were reduced a little bit, and that was a benefit, I think,
6:41
more so of the passing game that they leaned a little heavily into, got to cut down on
6:47
the three-in-outs, obviously.
6:49
In the red zone, the Giants had 18 rushing touchdowns, which was tied for 4th, but we'll
6:55
break that down in just a moment, all right?
6:59
Let's look at the stats between 2024 and 2025 regarding the running game.
7:06
That those years, by the way, are post-saquant, all right?
7:09
So from 2024 to 2025, the Giants had 29 rushing touchdowns, 14 of which were by the quarterbacks,
7:19
not in the red zone, by the way, all right?
7:21
So 29 rushing touchdowns in the red zone, 14 of those by the quarterbacks, not a very
7:30
They had 121 three-in-outs, which was the 12th most in the league over those two seasons.
7:38
They had 152 red zone rushes, which were 17th in the league, probably should be a little
7:45
higher, you would think, right?
7:48
Their red zone efficiency and their goal-to-go efficiency over that period, 2024 to 2025,
7:56
dead last in the league in both categories, 45.6% conversion percentage in the red zone,
8:04
and 60% on goal-to-go.
8:07
That again, post-saquant.
8:10
Now, I looked up last year how many touchdowns did the Giants score on the ground inside
8:19
The running backs accounted for four, all of which were Camp Scataboo.
8:25
The quarterbacks, Dart and James Winston accounted for six.
8:31
So you think maybe there's a little imbalance there with the running game?
8:35
I mean, you can look at the overall running game and say, oh, we got better.
8:39
And it did, but take away the performance of the quarterbacks.
8:44
And is the running game really that good, or wasn't that good last year?
8:49
Probably not, right?
8:50
The stats would suggest it wasn't.
8:52
Now, the other benefit of having a really solid running game, obviously, you cut down
8:58
on the need to have Jackson Dart execute a ton of design runs.
9:04
All right, Jackson Dart last year, 49 design runs out of 86 rushing attempts.
9:11
That's way too many folks.
9:15
And when you have a quarterback like Jackson Dart, who's going to try and get you every
9:19
last drop of the art age on a run, you really want to put them at risk several times
9:26
of game like they were doing at the start of the season before they made the coaching
9:31
You probably don't want to do that.
9:33
So getting a good running game together, and look, Camp Scataboo might very well be
9:41
able to provide that as Mike Tyrone Tracy.
9:44
But Jeremiah Love, I think you can make the case that he would elevate it.
9:49
This is a guy who doesn't have a lot of mileage on his feet, all right?
9:52
A guy who could be at every down back.
9:56
And you know, just a guy that he's going to make some team's offense happy.
10:02
And this isn't a situation where, you know, again, the Giants have to trade down because
10:06
I'll talk about a little later.
10:08
I'll talk about how the Giants not having a third round pick, you know, may not be as
10:14
big of a deal as we're making it out to be.
10:16
But look, the bottom line is this, if you read what Joe Shane said about how he is a fault
10:23
in his thinking regarding positional value, if you listen to what John Harbott said, I
10:31
don't know that that's necessarily smoke that they're just blowing.
10:35
I mean, maybe it is.
10:37
This is my first go-around with covering John Harbott.
10:40
So I kind of have to get a feel for, you know, what he likes and what he doesn't like and
10:44
what the little cues that give off, you know, signs that maybe he's throwing smoke out
10:49
there as opposed to being, you know, forthright.
10:53
But I don't think that we can discount the very strong possibility that the Giants take
10:59
Jeremiah Love with the fifth overall pick.
11:03
But I do it myself, no, I wouldn't.
11:06
And it's no, you know, this on Jeremiah Love, he's a great player, it's going to make
11:11
something very happy.
11:13
I personally would go defense.
11:15
I still think the Giants need cornerback help.
11:17
I still think they could use another linebacker.
11:20
They definitely need defensive line help.
11:23
But I could see the logic behind going with Jeremiah Love with the first pick, the first
11:31
round pick, fifth overall pick in the draft, if he is on the board there for the Giants.
11:37
So something to keep an eye on, something to think about for sure.
11:41
All right, Giants coming up next.
11:45
John Harbott told reporters what he wants out of the Giants offense, what he ambitions.
11:52
So how close are they really to fulfilling that need and what else do they still need
11:59
Talk about that right after this.

13:39

13:42
All right, let's talk about John Harbock and his vision for the New York Giants offense.
13:47
And you know, nothing earth shattering here, it's probably what every head coach wants
13:52
out of their offense.
13:53
You know, John Harbock talking to reporters on Monday at the lead meetings said he wants
13:58
an offense that's going to score a lot of points and offense that's going to be explosive.
14:05
So that being said, how close are they really, you know, and what do they still need?
14:11
Well, they have their quarter back for starters, all right, that's obviously the first step.
14:17
They have now added, you know, a big slot receiver in Isaiah, likely a Titan, who's going
14:24
to get a very big boost in his production versus what he might have had in the past when
14:30
he was kind of stuck behind Mark Andrews in Baltimore.
14:34
They will have Malik neighbors eventually coming back.
14:37
The big question mark is, is how close will Malik look to being the guy he was before
14:45
Eventually he'll get there, but it might still take a little bit of time.
14:49
They've added Calvin Austin, who I think is one of the underrated signings of free agency.
14:55
This is a guy that I think the Giants will be able to do a lot with, right?
14:59
They have Dornell Mooney that they added to that receiving course.
15:02
So basically, they swapped out one Dale Robinson and for what they would have had to pay
15:07
one Dale Robinson, what Robinson got from Tennessee, the Giants were able to add likely Austin
15:14
and Mooney, basically for roughly the same price, all right?
15:19
Each guy allowing for different things.
15:22
The offense of line, four-fifths of it is back.
15:27
The key though is keeping those guys healthy, particularly Andrew Thomas, who has missed
15:32
time each of the last few years with injuries, all right?
15:36
So once they saw the guard problem, the right guard problem, and again, I do think that's
15:40
going to come via the draft, they should be fine, all right, with that offensive line.
15:46
Because that offensive line last year was not bad, and if you believe that continuity
15:50
is an offensive line's best friend, well, this would be year three of that same line playing
15:57
So that could only be good things for the offense.
16:00
Now, the running game, we talked about a little bit in the previous segment.
16:05
The running game is not that bad, all right?
16:10
Would it be better?
16:14
Tyrone Tracy really stepped up, but there are things that he doesn't do as well.
16:20
And if you're talking about a power running game, I don't know that he's a great fit for
16:26
a power running game.
16:28
Obviously, Cam's scatable a little bit more of a better fit for the power running game,
16:33
but the thing with scatabo's running style is he runs hard every single play, and you've
16:41
got to wonder if that's going to be sustainable.
16:43
So that's why I think the Giants brought in Pat Ricard, a 300 pound full bat who's going
16:51
to do all the dirty work, if you will, and take some of that away from the running backs
16:56
to have the scratch and claw pound for their yardage.
17:01
But in terms of the overall offense, the big question mark, and we won't find out more
17:08
about this probably until we talk to offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy, which we are scheduled
17:13
to do on April 7th when the team starts its off season conditioning program.
17:19
What exactly will that offensive light?
17:23
Is it going to be primarily a power rushing offense first and a downfill passing offense
17:31
Are they going to go past first and run second like, you know, as was the case, is it going
17:38
to have elements of the West Coast offense in it, you know, with Matt Nagy in there?
17:45
How much of that is going to look like Kansas City?
17:47
Well, you know, here's the thing to remember folks.
17:50
We talk about everything revolving around Jackson Dart.
17:55
Mike Kafka, when he was here as the offensive coordinator, where did he get his coaching
18:04
Andy Reed in Kansas City, Matt Nagy coming from that same system in Kansas City.
18:13
So I think it wouldn't be a stretch to say that you're going to see a lot of those Kansas
18:18
City concepts continue onward with Jackson Dart stuff that he does well.
18:23
I think you'll see a lot more play action.
18:27
I think they will work to, you know, get Dart more comfortable working out, you know,
18:31
under center as opposed to always working in the shotgun.
18:35
So there will be new elements added and there will be elements from the old Buffalo system
18:41
that by a table drove when he was the head coach, I think we'll start to lose some of
18:47
Specifically, you know, maybe some of the yard after the catch things, those shorter passes
18:55
I'm just kind of spitballing here based on what each coach has kind of run and what kind
19:00
of system they've come from.
19:02
But the key here again is going to be Jackson Dart.
19:05
Well, play action is certainly something he does well, you know, obviously making plays
19:12
But I think they're going to maybe tweak it to where now maybe instead of always sending
19:15
him out and design runs, maybe just use the legs to buy time in the pocket, should the
19:23
Now, other things that I think we will see from the new offense, we will see better
19:31
efficiency and mix in the red zone, right?
19:34
One of my biggest complaints about the red zone play calling the last, you know, several
19:39
years, too many times did the giants run wide plays or slow developing plays where they
19:45
would send somebody out why in a short area zone, okay?
19:49
So if you're sending somebody out wide and you only have, say, less than 20 yards to go,
19:54
you're going to give these smaller, quicker, faster defensive players an opportunity to
19:59
string you out and stop you.
20:01
And that's a big reason why I suspect the giant's red zone offense just hasn't been
20:06
very potent of late.
20:09
So I would think we will see less wide or and slow developing, you know, plays down in
20:16
the red zone and more of the bang, bang type plays, all right?
20:20
Because don't give the defense an opportunity to set itself up or to adjust or to get into
20:27
You want to hit them with the element of surprise and the giants just haven't done a very
20:30
good, you know, job of that.
20:33
If you look back, the giants were great from the 20 yard line to the 20 yard line.
20:38
But once they got into the red zone, what did I always call it guys?
20:41
I always call it the dance zone.
20:44
So that's something the giants obviously need to figure out.
20:49
And of course, there's also keeping the pass rush off of Jackson Dart, you know, Jackson
20:55
Dart last year as a rookie, not, it wasn't unexpected.
21:00
There were times when maybe he left the pocket a little too prematurely, all right, on a
21:09
That's to be expected.
21:10
So working with him to continuing to develop that timer in his head to know when to take
21:17
off and when to, you know, hold his ground or move around to buy time, that's going to
21:25
So overall, you know, again, the pieces are in place for the offense.
21:29
They still need a right guard.
21:32
They still need some depth on the offensive line.
21:34
They could, you know, the power run game, you know, can we say that that's finished?
21:38
Probably not, but I think the giants are pretty close on offense, they're having what
21:44
harboring visions as an explosive point scoring offense.
21:49
And you know, lately in the NFL, if you average 25.1 points per game, typically that means
21:57
you're going to be in the playoffs, assuming, of course, you know, the other two aspects
22:01
of your game don't let you down.
22:04
So I think they're close, but we shall see.
22:08
There's still a lot to be unfolded, a lot to be discussed, and we'll get all that in
22:14
But, you know, just based on paper, they're, they're getting it.
22:18
All right, giant fans, coming up next, the giants do not have a third ground pick.
22:24
So is that really a big deal?
22:27
We'll talk about it right after this.
22:31
Hey, giant fans, there is no offseason in the Lockdown Giant's every day or club.

22:58
or visit Lockdown AMA giants.supercast.com for more information or to join.
23:04
All right, giant fans, in this segment of Lockdown Giant's, the giants don't have a third
23:11
And, you know, I've been talking about it a lot in this show and I've been talking about
23:15
how when I run mock draft simulations, how I see all these great players going by that
23:21
I would love to add to the giants and I have to wait until basically from 37 to 105.
23:28
And I got to thinking, you know, is that really that big of a deal, not having a third
23:36
And I've come to the conclusion that, you know what, maybe it's not that big of a deal.
23:42
Maybe it's just not.
23:45
And the reason why I say that is because look at the core foundation this team has.
23:51
All right, they've got their wide receiver one.
23:55
They have their quarterback.
23:56
The quarterback being the key piece, right?
23:59
If the giants didn't have a quarterback, I'd say, okay, that's a different story, but
24:03
they've got their quarterback.
24:04
They've got their left tackle.
24:06
They've got a quarterback.
24:07
They've got the linebacker now, which remain Edmonds in there, who's going to be an
24:10
every down backer for them.
24:12
They've got Dexter Lawrence.
24:14
They've got Isaiah likely to go with the O Johnson.
24:17
They have a lot of pieces.
24:19
Are they a complete team?
24:21
They still need a few more.
24:24
But this isn't a team that, you know, John Harbaugh saw the need to come in here and
24:29
just totally blow the whole thing up and start from scratch.
24:33
There's a solid enough foundation in there to build on.
24:37
And that has been the approach the giants had taken this off season.
24:42
So at the end of the day, if you think about it, the giants have seven draft picks.
24:49
They just don't have that third round.
24:51
They don't have a seventh round.
24:53
They have three in the sixth round.
24:56
So it's the same number of draft picks.
24:58
It's just where the draft picks fall.
25:01
So assuming that the scouts do their jobs, which they will, assuming that the giants don't
25:11
take any gambles on players that have red flags, whether it be for injury, character or
25:17
anything like that, assuming that they have done their homework, why couldn't they come
25:23
up with some solid picks on day three?
25:26
I mean, they've done so already.
25:29
Marcus Bow, promising day three pick.
25:32
Cam Skatibou was a, you know, a day three pick.
25:36
So it's not out of the question to come up with solid day three picks, all right?
25:41
Michael McFan's another one who is a solid day three pick, all right?
25:46
You have to do your homework.
25:48
And Wallet would be fantastic to have a third round pick because, you know, rounds one
25:53
through three are typically your premium picks.
25:58
I'm not so sure it's as big of a deal right now as maybe first thought.
26:06
And again, if they didn't have the quarterback, I'd feel differently.
26:11
But when you consider how they traded to get the quarterback, to get back into the bottom
26:16
of the first round last year, they really didn't have to pay a whole lot at the end of
26:22
the day, given where the roster is headed.
26:26
Now keep in mind, folks, this is all on paper.
26:30
I get that no games have been played.
26:34
We can sit here and we can install the virtues of this roster and how good it looks on paper
26:38
and how they have this and they'd have that and oh, they just had that.
26:43
Maybe they'll be a little bit more competitive than they were last year.
26:47
But right now, that's what we have to go on.
26:50
That's what the giants have to go on.
26:51
They don't know what it's going to really look like until they get on the field.
26:55
But there is a high level of optimism that this will all come together.
27:01
That this team will be more competitive, that it will fulfill what John Harbaugh expects.
27:07
That John Harbaugh, who sat there again at the NFL owners meeting and said he expects
27:12
his team to be competitive and to win.
27:16
That all of that will come to fruition.
27:20
All right, Jayfayette, so that's going to do it for this edition of the Latham Giants podcast.
