This is the Lockdown Podcast Network celebrating 10 years of your team every day. Here in Baton Rouge at the center of what's supposed to be the best college football game of the weekend. LSU versus Clemson 24 hours away. But nobody's talking about that. They're talking about this courtroom behind me where Greg Sankey sat on the stand for three hours on Thursday. We'll catch you cut up on all eightous Lockdown SEC. You are locked on SEC your daily podcast on the southeastern conference. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network your team every day. What's up everybody welcome into locked on SEC I'm Chris Gordy and the big news coming out yesterday from batterers last night. An injunction was granted by judge William Jordan in Louisiana paving the way for the NCAA and SEC eligibility for group of 40 athletes.
And that of course includes the headliners former Ole Miss now LSU transfers tight end dayquan right and D. Leibhann Xavier Harris. And now the ball is in the quarter of LSU setting up a huge decision today if they will indeed add them to the roster. And all sides point to LSU will in fact decide to add them to the roster we were on the scene last night as we heard from the players attorney Tony Clayton who had this to say. It's about the fair application. You're going to fly the rules but fly them fairly to everyone. So today justice was served and justice was served in the SEC. It was served like a cold cup of gumbo and that judge forced them to eat. And so the SEC if you ask me and the NCAA really hadn't shown any respect for this court rules. And the day I think this court is judge made it clear to me. Also we heard from the players here was dayquan right.
Really just being with you know the cost of that brought me to home. Just you know I'm familiar with the system. They've been you know real good to me great guys great group of guys so you know just really just that for real. What do you most of them were to about Saturday? Just putting on a cosmetic form again I wanted to have fun embracing my opportunity. In hearing right Sankey today saying all those things on the stand I've seen you been there since this morning. What's going through your mind? I can't really tell you it was a lot going through my mind for real. But you know I have my trust in the lawyers so I was on the same side with them. Whatever Sankey says is what he said. I just had my trust in them. Are you really involved in classes? Yes I am. You wouldn't be able to play it to the next side of the life. I'm not really clear on everything but I hope it will be this way. As you hear it there dayquan right saying outside the court how I look forward to putting on a college uniform again.
So full expectation is that these guys are going to suit up and the SEC going to push back. Now this was not even the biggest news on Thursday. As the day started with the hearing in Badrurs we found out while SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey was on the stand that the SEC had filed a federal lawsuit against LSU and Lane Kiffin. The suit was filed in the state of Alabama at the U.S. District Court level. LSU, school president Wade Rousse, 80 Virgil Osbury and head coach Lane Kiffin all named as defendants in that case. And the SEC taking issue with LSU's actions and recruiting and citing those former kind of NFL players who are looking for eligibility asking the NCAA to apply the new five and five policy obviously to the class of 2022. And the SEC saying LSU's conduct has quote already harmed the conference and threatens to cause further substantial harm if not curmed. They went on to say defendants wage day deliberate and coordinated campaign or crew pro athletes to play football for LSU during the upcoming season including players who had signed contracts NFL contracts with the Brown Saints and box.
Now of course this is where a lot of the you know what side of your on here are you on the side of okay the guys who went into mini camp in the you know right after the draft they want to drafted went to mini camp as an invite but didn't get paid from what we did. And you kind of look at the research sounds like to go to mini camp you had to sign a waiver to be able to play for that team but you weren't technically part of the team you had to make the training camp roster and then some of these you know these other guys like Xavier Harris and they gone right they want to drafted made the roster the training camp roster but of course got cut during training camp and did not make the season roster and so just a lot of interesting stuff here. Now one of the guys Jack Byburn who reported was planning to return to LSU he got cut by the Tampa a box but he got scooped up claimed by the Kansas City Chiefs so thus he will be in the NFL I'm assuming on their what practice squad or whatever but.
Pete Neko is putting out a quote from the SEC saying despite the SEC's longstanding rules prohibiting pro athletes from returning to college defended saw this as an opportunity to be exploited they began orchestrated campaign to recruit pro athletes to join LSU football roster now this comes on the heels there was a story out that CBS sports. I put out there that they had some kind of report that you know they knew Lane Kiffin had reached out to the spires I will say it's to defend it a little bit I mean did did Sarc reach out to Cole Hudson at all when he got let go from mini camp a burrow you should come back here I again these are guys who played with lane we was at Ole Miss with the SEC have as big of an issue if he was still a little miss and they were coming back to Ole Miss because remember they don't like the idea of transferring to a different SEC school as well with all this. But again I think a lot of the people get hung up on the idea of were they pro players a lot of LSU put you know side saying and they were they were there in trade camp they wore the brown jersey for a couple weeks but got let go I think Xavier Harris's case with the Saints he was injured the whole time so really didn't do anything with them but people are hung up on they signed a pro contract and then again to go through training camp you have to be under some kind of contract somewhere around the twenty twenty twenty five thousand dollar payment you get for being.
In training camp and then get cut you go on your merry way but a lot of people seeing that as you're a former NFL player at that point the NFL P.A. in fact considers you a former NFL player but it is pretty funny when you think back to you know would we if you talk to Diego Pavia today would you call him former Baltimore Ravens player Diego Pavia no but he did sign a contract with the Ravens they got paid by the Ravens so it is just it's it's it's one of the sticky territories black and white and meets and it's a gray area on where you fall on it and again a lot of people stand by the the idea if you signed a pro contract whether it was a 10 day in the G league whether it was a training camp and you got cut you were a pro athlete and you should go on your merry way and not be able to go back to college that's where a lot of people feel on this thing but this suit comes days before LSU takes the field out Saturday against Clemson of course the SEC requires rosters to be finalized twenty four hours before kick off thus if you're watching us on Friday expect the hearing decision made on on that and again all signs point to them joining LSU's roster now some highlights from earlier in the day in this court hearing attorney Tony Clayton asked SEC commissioner Greg Sankie who was on the stand for over three hours
asked him how much money he made and added that Sankie flew down to to battle ruse on his private jet Sankie replied he made four point eight million dollars last year Clayton then said they make a lot of money off the backs of these kids Clayton was also also asked Greg Sankie why the Ole Miss quarterback was a lot of the play a six-year when these kids are only asking for fifth Sankie he said because the quarterback had a medical condition Clayton also hammered Sankie and his attorney kept objecting and nearly always getting overruled according reports Clayton said quote as my grandma used to say ain't no fun when the rabbit got the gun the judge ordered that comment to be struck from the record Sankie finished on the stand more than three hours of testimony and Tony Clayton asking the judge to keep Sankie around in case he needed him again saying don't let him get on that jet yet once Sankie take away the NFL he said the NFL is not a recruiting ground for college football it never has been dayquan right took the stand he was asked how much he has been paid in NIL money thus far in college he said over seven figures for sure
Louisiana attorney general Liz Murrell Murrell called the merits of the SEC lawsuit garbage she called the timing legal gamesmanship and criticized Greg Sankie for wanting to go home on his private jet this was during a recess and then afterwards Greg Sankie talked with the media saying a long experience it's important to be here plenty of disagreement on some tough issues I wanted to represent our universities and their expectations on why he came he said I think it's important to stand up for principles even if people disagree so Greg Sankie there was a report he was given special security in batterish after threats this is recorded W.A.F.B. Sankie test testifying for three hours at the Baton Rouge courthouse a sheriff's East Baton Rouge sheriff's spokesperson said given the high profile nature of today's proceeding and security concerns including threats received in connection with the manner a request was made for Sankie to utilize an alternate entrance to the courthouse a pretty interesting there now also on Thursday we got other state attorneys general I get a
whole journalism thing not attorney generals attorneys general a chimed in across the SEC of course we had the Georgia AG Chris car rental letter to the SEC on Wednesday asking them to take all measures including suspending or removing LSU from the conference if they proceeded with rostering former NFL players South Carolina AG Alan Wilson joined in on Thursday calling on the University and the Gamecocks program to support the SEC rule of banning NFL players and then also Mississippi attorney general in Fitch she put out a statement saying University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University run to the very best programs in the country I support their right to do what is necessary to protect the integrity of their programs support their right to promote their best interests so even more kingdom the president of Mississippi states and I want to thank her for steadfast support during this pivotal time for college athletics Louisiana governor Jeff Landry fired back at the Georgia AG suggesting the LSU suspension and he said calling them NFL players is that best disingenuous and it was intentionally deceptive he said they're not pro football players circling
back after years in the NFL these are college players who were told by the NCA they were done so they took the only door that was open only to watch the NCA change the lock behind them so again this is interesting a lot of the other SEC state AGs backing you know Sankey say hey do something here we don't want this to happen and we want to kick LSU out of the SEC if they keep going forward with this uh lastly on this the other 15 SEC University presidents did hold meetings to discuss a range of serious measures on LSU of Lane Kiffin and company proceeded with adding his players the statement was the SEC will continue to defend this standard the principal fair competition and the conference's authority to govern competition among its member universities that statement coming from the SEC and then also attorneys representing the SEC and courts say they plan to file an appeal on Thursday nights decision as soon as possible now one other report that came out that sentence uh we heard this name prior but LSU also working to add former Utah cornerback Blake cotton
who went their training camp with the Denver Broncos uh he said it's not finalized but there were things being worked out to try to add Blake cotton to LSU's roster now there was an interesting sidebar yesterday Oklahoma added a veteran player to their defensive live room ex Boise State D lineman Braxton uh as a Feli Feli FELY but he was granted a TRO on Thursday granting him eligibility now he was invited to an NFL mini camp by the Denver Broncos there are pictures of out out there of him where a Denver Broncos helmet but he never signed an NFL contract he didn't make it past the mini camp and again this is where people get hung up like I went to the mini camp warn NFL Jersey got coached by an NFL coaches but was only there for a couple of days and got cut it's the other guys that made it past mini camp to training camp and that's where you know you become a pro and so again right wrong or indifferent that's those are you know the lines where people are drawing in the sand and then lastly Arkansas defensive
tackle transfer Danny Saley I say I L I he had already been added to the roster to receive a separate TRO on Thursday for Oklahoma he's headed there so um anyway a lot of moving parts a lot of craziness across the SEC but let's talk some actual football one who returned thanks again for making lock down SEC your first listen every day support for today's episode comes from square the system powering so many of the places we already know and love whether you're running a packed game day spot a local restaurant or a growing business square give sellers the tools to run their business without making things more complicated square brings payments inventory payroll invoices customer insights and more together in one connected system so whether you're a one location business or growing into multiple locations square gives you the tools to sell manage and grow without needing an IT team to figure it all out and there's something I really appreciate about a lot of those local spots nearby they can handle a huge game day crowd without everything feeling chaotic quick checkout easy payments everything moving smoothly that's
where a platform like square can make a real difference behind the scenes so if you're starting a business or running one that deserves better tools square helps you sell manage and grow without slowing down right now you can get up to two hundred dollars off square hardware at square.com slash go slash college that's squar e.com slash geo slash college run your business smarter with square and get started today thank you guys for making locked on SEC your first listen of the day think you're making locked on the number one sports podcast network and hey we actually had a college game last night in the SEC the Missouri Tigers getting started on their season beating up Arkansas Pine Bull up in their open last night they were up jumped out to a 40 to nothing lead at half time be like drink what's opting to take a lot of his key players out of the game by the third quarter new starting quarterback Austin Simmons who transferred over from Ole Miss of course was the Ole Miss starting quarterback at the start of last season he was outstanding going 17 for 19 for 252 yards throwing
four touchdowns didn't have to come in the rest of the game his favorite target of the night how about sophomore wide receiver Donovan Alubede who finished with eight catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns he was one of the top wide receivers if you remember the class of 2025 last year he was right up there with what Dallas Wilson and Vernal Brown those big Florida receivers but he was one of the top wide receivers last year top 100 recruit did lose a fumble in this one but man what a guy that I think maybe we didn't talk enough about any offseason and I think certainly be a breakout player this year in the SEC and be one of the better wide receivers out there so shout out to him now Simmons fellow Ole Miss transfer Caden Lee also coming up big in this one at four catches for 80 yards and a touchdown as well but Austin Simmons just that you knew the chemistry he had with Caden Lee they were together all you know in their time at Ole Miss together and Simmons also connecting with receivers Sean Terry on a score as well so four touchdowns for Austin Simmons I get
it it's Arkansas Pine Bluff but mission accomplished she had to go out there and look good look competent and the starters did that now and the absence absence of running back I'm out of already Tigers rolled with running back Jamal Roberts who had 13 carries for 47 yards on a touchdown and then their transfer coming over from Houston Christian Zation Edwards seven carries for 45 yards behind him now he's he's an interesting one he rents for a thousand yards in the Southland conference last year so a nice little I guess two headed backfield you could say of those guys and then if they get I'm on hardy back again look out because the Missouri run game it's always been good under Eli Drake what's moving back to Tyler Bady I mean all these great backs that that drink has had there at Mizzou I'm on hardy looking like the best of the bunch and again not ready to go yet but they're hoping in a couple weeks he will be back in full football shape practicing and ready to get back into action defensively Jason Dall had a sack and then Nick Rodriguez Jeremiah Beasley they had some nice nights tackling as well we got to see Matt
Zollers get some second half reps as the backup quarterback remember he played a good bit as a freshman last year after the injuries to both Pobulo but you know good reps for Matt Zollers in there and we'll see you know if he has to be relied on at all this year for Mizzou but Missouri will have a full week to get ready for their next opponent a road trip to Kansas next Friday night but shout out to Eli Drake what's the company M.I.C as they say Missouri starts 1-0 in the on the season out of the SEC now we'll get another SEC team in action tonight out in Norman we will get number 10 Oklahoma taking on U-Tap in their season opener obviously it's going to be a major mismatch but Sooners bringing back tons of starters from last year's team that made the college football playoff meanwhile U-Tap has lost 19 games the past two seasons and they're replacing I think I read every starter on offense so going to be a very lopsided one for Oklahoma their defense
consider one of the best in the nation last year and every time we talk to those guys whether it was John Matier or Taylor Wein they all said they think this defense will be just as good if not better than it was a year ago so Taylor Wein's back, Chip Lewis's back Owen Heinecke got another of eligibility so going to be attacking clinic from Oklahoma tonight now starting quarter by John Matier is leading receiver Isaiah Satania and four starting alignment all back for OU along with their Lou Groza award-winning kicker Tate Sandel who made eight of nine kicks from 50 plus yards expectations high for the Sooners coming off a 10-3 season and again still feeling kind of looking their wounds after that playoff lost to Alabama where they had the early lead and let it slip away very quickly but Brad Venables asked what he wants to see from his team tonight he said I want to see clean football if you say hey what's winning look like you stop the run you run the football and you create explosive plays and win the tonal of a margin those are areas that the
stat sheet can tell a story I want to play aggressive clean football maybe we might have a aggressive penalty I don't mind those I don't like the sloppiness pre snap of the mental mistakes that are part of football so like you top coming off a two and ten season they're entering their first year in the mountain west after 21 years in conference USA gonna be a mismatch but expect to see Oklahoma do some good things particularly through the air with John Matier want to see that that is fully good to go after the broken thumb last year and then of course some of his new receivers in Parker Livingston Troll Harris among others and particularly that run game with God to see Oklahoma be more balanced this year and have a good run game that can you know can keep them balanced so we will see but Jason Witten talking about his tight ends this off season saying they are part of the run game he said being the guy who's usually at the end of the line of scrimmage you are an extension of that offensive line you better know how to block so that will certainly help as well with some blocking tight ends and watch for our guy Rocky Beers hope
hoping he finds the end zone there but Oklahoma they've won all five games played against U-Tep dating back to 2000 sooner started their undefeated national championship season that year with a 55-14 win in Norman over U-Tep so let's see if that gets started tonight for the sooners all right still more to come here a locked on SEC part of the locked on podcast network covering your team every day support for today's episode comes from ultra pouches football season means long days early mornings late nights and plenty of time spent trying to stay focused and energized whether you're heading to work get a workout in settling in for a full day of football having something that helps you stay locked in can make a difference and ultra pouches are designed to deliver instant focus at smooth energy and a convenient pouch without nicotine or caffeine ultra partnered with leading neuroscientists to create pouches using no atropics including infinity px l thienine alpha gpc and vitamins b6 and b12 we got the science stuff out looked the result is a pouch designed to

We're going to one here locked on SEC and obviously we got week one getting
underway right now so some things to watch already told you what we're watching what we watch for for Mizzou we saw that we told you what we're watching for the Oklahoma tonight so what about the other the rest of the slate as we head into a Sarri's games and as we look to the weekend Kielin Russell and the run game for Alabama I want to see both those things want to see how the truth the uh second year player quarterback now full-time star Kielin Russell takes over want to see him execute game plan uses legs uses arm and then I want to see that run game for Alabama what does that look like does E.J. Crowell go you're seeing he might go but Daniel Hill and others can carry the load want to see family get back to a dominant run game against the CU the Kendall Brails influence on the North sellers and the South Carolina offense as they take on Kent State want to see that I could suck you I want to see all the new particularly the Will Stein offense now led by former Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchi at Georgia want to see that defense get after Tennessee state I want to see Georgia get back to sacking the quarterback more we were missing that last year
Texas against Texas state want to see Arch connect with Cam Coleman how much do they connect this Cam Coleman find the end zone he finally has what seems like a more competent quarterback trying to get him the football and then how much more aggressive is that Will much champ defense we know he's going to bring it back there in Austin with the Longhorn so let's see what that looks like with Auburn it's the goal she fact in a competitive game against Baylor Kim Byron Brown be that dude and maybe he takes the SEC by storm this year with his skill set running and throwing we will see Arkansas taken on North Alabama I want to see that much improved defense it was a trotious last year can Arkansas show a pulse on defense it's North Texas I get it but want to see that defense get after it and then of course K.J. Jackson the new quarterback very intriguing as well for Texas a.m. how different is that offense with Holman Wiggins gone they take on Missouri state Marcel Reach who put up some big numbers but Holman Wiggins calling the place not calling Klein what will that look like for Vanderbilt does blaze burlow it's impressed versus
Austin P and also with that what does five star freshman Jared Curtis do when he gets in you know this feels like one where blaze may not be the quarterback very long people want to see Jared Curtis and what he can do Mississippi state they take on Louisiana Monroe all ice on Camario Taylor he's been hyped this whole off season the Jeff Levy offense will put him in a space to succeed he should have a big day for Florida want to see her in filo good after FAU but I'm also intrigued about how good this gator defense can be want to see that that Florida defense be a little bit more aggressive now under John Summroll and then Sunday Ole Miss against Lovlo I think the big question is we like turned out Chambers we like Kiwan Lacey they were awesome last year how do they look different at all or do they look exactly the same with no Charlie White Jr. Elaine Kifford influence of course John David Baker the new OC very similar stun law offense but does it look the same that's going to be the big question that a lot of people are going to have all right thank you guys for tuning into today's Lockdown SEC make sure you subscribe and follow see you
