Excuse me, the Friday edition of the Drive Time Show here on Vaughn Radio. And how about that brand new show? A couple of hours ago, if you tuned in, we have a brand new show, The Cain of Spain, as presented by our friend Damian Moya.

1:04That'll be Fridays from 4 to 5 here on Vaughn Radio. Nice to have Damian in the mix. We welcome him to the Vaughn Radio team. Great to have him with us. Let's begin this half hour with a section we did yesterday. And it was a lot of fun. And I'd like to do it again. I'm talking about a fact section where what we're going to do is, well, we're going to give a couple of facts. Two of them are real and one of them is a lie. And I want you to try to figure out guess at Divina which one is the lie. That's right. And that's a fact. It's a strange world we live in, ladies and gentlemen, a world where knowledge is power. A world where we strive to know as much as we can. You didn't know that it's impossible to sneeze with your eyes open or that a shark can detect one part of blood in a hundred million parts of water. Today's fact might not turn you into a genius.

2:07But you just might find it interesting to know for sure. And that's a fact. And that's a fact today. We're talking about the world of beer, let's have a thought exactly beer. Well, I'm going to give you a couple of facts and we'll try to figure out together which one is a lie. And the truth is I don't know myself. So it's it's a guessing game for me until I look at my answer guide here. So the first one beer is mostly water because of this the type of water used in the beer making process has a significant effect on the taste of the beer. Dublin's hard water is most suitable for stouts while Pilsen's soft water is best for pale loggers. That sounds about right to me. Your stouts, your dark beers, okay.

3:10I would say that that's true. I would say that's correct, but we'll find out in a minute. Number two, according to annual Gallup polls, about 78% of US adults have occasion to use alcoholic beverages. When it comes to their beverage of choice, it has been almost even between wine and beer since the 1940s with wine becoming more and more popular each year. Beer took the lead only once in 2005. So more people prefer wine to beer. Interesting. Now is that true or false? I don't know. That one might be a lie. I think I think I think more people drink beer. Wouldn't you think? I don't know. Third fact, a program was launched in Belgium in 2001 to replace sugary drinks and soda in school lunchrooms with a healthier option. Beer.

4:19Students had the option between logger and bitter and 80% of the children in the pilot program said they enjoyed having beer with lunch. I bet they would. Okay. Now that one seems, that one seems to be like the craziest one, the wildest one. So for me, it's almost like I think it's probably true because it seems like it would be a trick question. That would be the obvious choice for the crazy one. That should be false, which makes me think it might be true. You know what I mean? Anyway, let's review. So the first one said that beer is mostly water. Of course, Dublin's hard water is most suitable for stouts and pills and the pills and well, soft water is best for pale loggers. I believe that to be true. And that is true. Okay.

5:28So that's a fact. So yes, the typical ingredients of beer, a water fermented starch yeast and then hops, a loopulo, but you have your moths, which can be if you used to have your moths, which can be create your fermented starch so that can come from from barley, it can come from wheat, it can come from corn, it can come from different things. The mineral content of the water does have an effect on the taste of the beer, hard water, high in minerals like calcium and sulfate, enhances bitterness and soft water, free of most minerals as a cleaner taste. So this is why Guinness brewed in Dublin tastes different from Guinness brewed in London. There you go. Okay. Fun fact. Number two, okay. Said that number two was saying that beer and wine popularity was very similar, but typically more people drink wine. And this is false.

6:36Beer has maintained the lead each year with wine being more popular than beer in 2005, a limited time. Hard liquor is a distant third place. And only 64% of US adults drink occasionally. And it's been pretty, pretty much the same since the 1940s with a slight increase during the 70s. Okay. So that was false. So that means that the third one was a fact. Program in Belgium in 2001 to replace sugary drinks in soda and school lunchrooms was a success replacing these drinks like Coca-Cola with beer. Imagine kids, hey, Coke is bad for your health. Have a beer. But yeah, the chairman of the local beer club in this community delimbergs.

7:43He said beer is for the whole family. The program was drawn out for students ages three to 15. Imagine your three now. Have a beer. A special beer was used for the program, which contained no more than 2.5% alcohol. Okay. So it was a low alcohol beer, but the kids loved it. They loved it as they would, I guess, right? And I like beer too. More and more. It's growing on me. And there's a real growing scene I've had on the show last year we had Bob Maltman, the brewer in Madrid from Maltman Brewing. And we learned all about beer. I should probably have Bob back or maybe have another brewer on the show because it's fascinating. And there's a great place. A great place for beer in Madrid. If you if you want to try different beers craft beers, I would have to say the best place is called the toast. Malasenia.

8:51It's on Kaisen, Vicente Ferrer number 33. And they have 24 taps, 20 quarter grief was the savanta artisanal 24 taps of craft beer. It's a very interesting, very unique experience beers from all different types. You know, you have your IPAs, different types of India Pale Ales. You have Pills Nurs, you have Stouts, you have Porters, you have Imperial beers, different wheat beer. You have all kinds of beers there. And if you know, and they have a very educated staff, a very good staff who can talk about the beers and explain the different flavor profiles, parrot worth different foods. They have great food as well. It's called the toast tap room. Tap room like Saturday, it was but the toast tap room on San Vicente Ferrer in Madrid. And I do recommend that place. It's it's great. So it's in it's in Malasenia, the toast tap room. And yeah, you'll find me in there sometimes on the weekends. I'm in there because it's a it's a good place to go to have a to have a beer.

10:03If you're a beer lover, you got to check that out. You have a lot of different Spanish brands of craft beer. One that I like is called Ispiga from Barcelona. There's of course La Virgen from Madrid. Founders brewing, which comes from Michigan. They bring beer in from there. There's one called doagles, which is a British guy named Andrew dogal. And he's but he brews in Cantabria, I think. Malta is there as well Bob Malta, friend of the program, his beers are there. So if you want to try some great beer, I really recommend the toast tap room, the toast tap room on in San Vicente Ferrer number 33 in Madrid. Great selection of beers. Anyway, we're going to push forward everybody. We got lots more to talk about as the show moves on as Freddie Mercury says the show must go on. And it's time for a challenge. That's right. 17:25Well, we start by going back just about what? What? 13 years, I guess today? 2008, we have the resignation of Fidel Castro, who resigned as president of Cuba on this day in 2008. After a long illness, the resignation ended one of the longest 10 years as a head of state in the world. After 47 years in power, Castro handed the country over to his brother Raúl Castro and a few younger cabinet ministers. Of course, the charismatic Cuban leader took power in 1959 after waging a guerrilla war against the dictator Batista,

18:29Fulgencio Batista promising to restore Cuban, well, the constitution and to hold elections. But he soon, it wasn't long before he turned away from those promises and he embraced a totalitarian brand of communism, allied his island with the Soviet Union, and he brought the world to the brink, well, the border they're limited to, the brink of war, the cusp of a nuclear war in 1962, when he allowed the Russians to build a missile launch site, just 90 minutes off American, American shores or multiple sites. Now they say that he withstood over 600 assassination attempts. And some of them are just like something out of a James Bond movie, an exploding cigar or an exploding seashell, a poison chocolate bar, all kinds of crazy things that were at least rumored to have happened.

19:42Now also on this day, something interesting in 1996, we have Casparov, Gary Casparov beating the IBM chess playing computer, it was called Deep Blue. And Casparov won the match 4-2, but Deep Blue went on to defeat Casparov in a rematch the following year. Now this guy Gary Casparov, he was considered one of the greatest chess players in history. He was born in Azerbaijan, the Russian Republic, and in 1985 he was 22 years old, he became the youngest world champion in history, when he defeated a guy named Antonoli Carpov. Now the origins of Deep Blue go back to 1985, 10 years before, 11 years before, when a student at the Carnegie Mellon University started developing a chess playing computer called Chip Test, and the computer became later known as Deep Thought.

20:57After the machine in a science fiction novel, the science fiction novel, the hit-triker's guide to the galaxy by Douglas Adams. Now the developer, a guy named Asian gentleman by name Feng Shu, he and his colleagues got a Murray Campbell and others were later hired by IBM where they continued to work on the chess playing computer. And in 1989 Casparov easily beat the Deep Thought computer when they met for a 2-game match. So the IBM team said, okay, we have to refine the supercomputer, train it better. In 1993 they came back, the computer was renamed Deep Blue, a combination of Deep Thought and Big Blue, which is IBM's nickname. Now the 6-game match between Casparov and Deep Blue began on February 10th, 1996, in Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, and Deep Blue wasn't capable of evaluating 100 million different chess positions per second.

22:20And the IBM team wasn't sure how the computer would perform in competition, and Casparov was expected to win. He was favored. But instead, in much of his frustration, the champion lost the first game to Deep Blue, the computer won. But Casparov was very smart, clever, and he managed to come back and he won the second game. The third and fourth games ended in a draw, Empate, Casparov won the fifth game, and on February 17th, the human chess master beat Deep Blue in the sixth game and took the match with a final score of 4-2. Now there was the 6th game, the rematch occurred in May of 1997, and the IBM team had been working to upgrade to modify and update the computer.

23:38And by this time, apparently it could examine 200 million different chess positions per second. Now Casparov still managed to win the first match, Deep Blue won the second, the third, fourth, and fifth games ended in a draw, and on May 11th, Deep Blue won the sixth match. And the victory was a huge publicity boost for IBM, and Casparov was, while he was angry, and he suggested that Deep Blue had been aided by human assistance during the games. IBM denied in Casparov demanded a rematch, but instead IBM said no, and they retired Deep Blue. Now Casparov retained his World Chess Championship title until the year 2000, in 2005 he announced his retirement from professional chess, and in 2007 he became a candidate for the Russian presidency.

24:48Yeah, Russians, they love their chess, and if you're a chess master, you can become very famous in Russia. It seems that people love chess, and Russian women seem to love playing the piano. I don't know what it is. Stereotypes, I shouldn't be calling out stereotypes, but it seems to me that they like playing the piano, and playing chess.
