President Barack Obama.
Virginia, we are counting on you.
Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress
to raid the next election and wield unchecked power
for two more years.
But you can stop them by voting yes by April 21st.
Help put our elections back on a level playing field
and let voters decide not politicians.
Vote yes by April 21st.
Paid for by Virginians for fair elections.

I thank you for listening and for supporting and for,
and I, I mean, I thank you for listening,
but I also appreciate that you invest in yourself
and you choose to do it with us, okay?
Because you're doing the right thing.
You're working on your English.
Anyway, let's begin this half hour
by looking at today's common mistake.
I have a new.
I have some news.
Got a new.
I have some news.
Common mistakes.
Mistakes.
Common mistakes.
Let's see if David makes it.
David, are you ready to translate a sentence
without making today's common mistake?
Okay.
Let's see.
So, oh well, I'm going to make it.
Who's on charts, but I forget, I don't know.
It's not that.
Yeah.
Who's fault?
I mean, you're saying both of these are true,
so they're kind of correct so far,
but it's not what we're looking for.
Not exactly.
You're dancing around the...
Because I don't want to say...
I know, I know.
You know, the word.
Yeah.
The R word.
I don't.
You don't want to say the R word.
The R word.
Yeah.
Where I come from, you can get beat up for saying the R word.
I don't know.
Well, but sometimes you have to say the R word,
but you just have to say it properly.
As a verb, as an adjective, not as a noun.
So, who's responsible?
Yes.
For...
No.
Yeah?
Yeah, for doing this mess or...
Or who's responsible for this mess?
For this mess.
Okay.
So, what you can't say is the responsible.
And I understand in Spanish,
the responsible.
And I say, ah, but I'm looking for the...
And then...
Substantivo.
That's much easier.
So you could say...
So you could say, like, who is...
Well, who's responsible for marketing?
But you could also say, who is in charge of, like...
Encargado de...
No?
That's it.
Encargado de marketing.
Encargado de marketing.
Yeah.
And so, who is...
But once you say, eh, encargado, the...
Then you have to say, like, the manager.
It's a marketing manager.
Who's the marketing manager?
Who is responsible for?
So, hopefully, the marketing manager is responsible for marketing.
The accounting manager is responsible for accounting.
The radio technician is responsible for the technical aspects of the radio show.
He's responsible for it.
He's responsible for speaking into this microphone.
I'm not the responsible, but I am responsible for it.
I am responsible for making my bed.
Nobody else will do it, unfortunately, as much as I've tried.
I'm responsible for preparing my own breakfast.
Every morning, I drink coffee, and I'm responsible for making my own coffee.
I do not have a barista in my house.
Although, David, I've had a coffee problem.
Did I tell you about my coffee problem?
No.
No, no.
Well, that's all because of my larger problem right now.
My refrigerator problem.
But...
No refrigerator?
No milk.
No milk.
No.
Now, I could have warm milk, but it's not the same.
I actually thought yesterday of using it...
I actually had a little system where I had some ice, and I put it outside,
because it's like eight degrees outside.
So it was not bad.
Better than inside.
But anyway, the problem is I don't have any fresh milk.
Well, I don't have any milk.
Open.
Because I don't have a working refrigerator these days.
In case you're just tuning in,
my refrigerator is broken.
It's been causing me tremendous trouble the last few days.
So, you know what I did, though, David?
I went to the local grocery store, and I bought...
to have these little sobres and a little pouch, a little pouch of instant coffee
with powdered sugar and powdered milk.
Let you in polvo.
Dentro, yeah.
So you dump it in, you put hot water, and more or less, you have a coffee.
It's not bad.
It's not bad.
It's not bad, you know.
It's a temporary...
It's a...
There's a good word.
We can say, make shift.
As an adjective, make shift, like algo.
Como temporal para salir del paso, right?
Make shift.
Well, it's a solution for now.
Anyway, el responsable.
Son los padres responsables de sus hijos alutos.
That's a good question.
Are parents responsible for their adult children?
No.
No.
So, to be responsible,
aunque estaba borracho, sigues siendo responsable de lo que pasó.
Even though he was drunk,
he's still responsable for what happened.
Yeah.
OK.
Even though...
OK.
Even though he was drunk, he's still responsable for what happened.
Uh-huh.
Mm-hmm.
Um...
Here's a good question.
Let's...
Let's...
Here's what we're going to do, David.
I'm going to ask you to translate this sentence,
and then I'm going to get...
I'm going to get you to give us your opinion.
OK.
OK.
Let's go.
Algunos creen...
Now, you can...
You can give your real opinion,
or you can give a fake opinion.
It doesn't matter, OK.
Whatever you want.
Algunos creen que no somos responsables del cambio climático.
OK.
Uh-huh.
Uh-huh.
Some...
Wow.
Some belief.
Yeah.
Some believers.
Yeah.
Some believe that we're not responsible for the climate change.
Mm-hmm.
Or for climate without the article.
Just for climate change.
So.
For climate change.
Some believe we're not responsible for climate change.
And that's a...
It's a...
Kind of a political issue, right?
Well, it...
Well, it's become a political issue.
It's become a...
Yeah.
A topic that people have lots of opinions on.
What do you think?
We would have to ask a scientist.
And scientists...
There are some that say that human being is not that responsible for it,
as we could think.
Or as responsible as...
Yeah.
Some may think.
Yeah.
And there are some scientists that would say that, yeah, we are totally responsible.
And we are destroying Earth and things like that.
I don't believe we are destroying Earth or nothing at all.
The Earth has really a...
Mucha capacidad de restaurarse.
It has a great ability to restore itself and rejuvenate itself.
That's it.
And the human beings will see, maybe it's less than a 5% of...
You know?
Seractical.
Less than 5%.
Or a change of less than 5%.
Yeah.
We cause less than 5% of it.
That's my opinion.
Okay.
Yeah.
I mean...
I don't know.
I think this is one of these issues that...
Certain people with certain political lines almost have to follow.
It's like a certain thing.
It's like in...
You know, if you're like a...
If you're in a certain line, you often happen to have a certain football team, too.
In Spain...
Enter a football, también, in Spain.
And they're not a cavearch or anything.
But all of a sudden, oh, you support this political party,
so you, for some reason, have to have these views on the climate.
And you also have to have these views on football.
It's totally ridiculous.
And also religion also comes in, too, sometimes, right?
No kidding.
There's nothing there.
But somebody goes, hey, why don't you see?
If you have this line, then you're like,
you gotta believe this, and this, and this, and this.
And maybe that just goes to show.
The effects of the media, or whatever,
where certain people get into a certain path of reading a certain media source,
or certain sources, and then they have the same beliefs about all the things that that channel feeds them.
I don't know.
I don't know.
That's why I use my social media to teach English.
Yes, that.
I don't get into it, guys.
I don't get into, you can follow me on Twitter, X, Instagram,
and I'm not going to be, oh, I'm going to be hard at this door,
because I don't like it.
I don't care.
It's just a way for me to teach you the present perfect.
To talk about verbs.
Right?
I'm not talking about political stuff.
We're just having a good time working on our English over here.
Right?
That's the goal, right, David?
Exactly.
Peace.
Good purpose.
Peace, love, and conditional structures in English.
Peace, love, and verbs.
Los verbos.
Disenthales.
That's right.
That's what we do, everybody.
That's right.
Okay.
Hey, why don't we move on?
Because it is, well, it is that time we have to move on.
My gosh, we have to move on.
And why don't we, yeah, why don't we get into the paragraph of the day?
Paragraph of the day.
All right, it's time for the paragraph of the day.
Paragraph of the day.
Mm-hmm.
Once when I was about your age.
I had the chance to work one summer on a merchant marine ship going to South America.
It's a very exciting paragraph, guys.
Already.
I'm Piatha Kondimos.
Once when I was about your age, I had the chance to work on a merchant marine ship going to South America.
My parents said it was okay, and I joined the crew.
After about three days, though, they had to leave me in Trinidad.
I had been terribly seasick for 72 straight hours.
Okay, 40.
72 hours.
Once when I was about your age, I had the chance to work one summer
on a merchant marine ship going to South America.
It sounds exciting, right?
Ooh, interesting.
My parents said it was okay, and I joined the crew.
My parents said it was okay, and I joined the crew.
I joined the crew.
After about three days, after about three days, they had to leave me in Trinidad.
After about three days, though, they had to leave me in Trinidad.
I had been terribly seasick for 72 hours.
right, entre con coba donga y cangas teonis por las curvas, right. Oh, I gotta get it. Stop the car.
I don't feel so good, mareado también. So this is a, this is a type of
nausea. No, you say, I feel nauseous. The noun, nausea.
And to be nauseous, but in a car, we'd call it car sickness, to be car sick, to be on a boat,
seasick, or air sick on a plane, Debbie. Yeah, because I was thinking, because when we say
mareado, it's always a mental thing. It has nothing to do with the stomach. No, it can cause you
to vomit, for example. Oh, yeah, it can cause you that. But mareado is, me due la cabeza,
I'm mareado. I'm like, oh, I didn't know that because, okay, in English, we also, but
just have vertigo. Yeah, but that's another thing, vertigo is dizzy. Yeah. But vertigo,
like if you spin around, if I say, if you turn, if I turn around in this computer chair,
if I sit in this chair, I spin 10 times, and then I stand up and go, oh, that's mareado,
that's mareado. And I feel like I'm going to fall over. No, that's mareado. Yeah, for sure.
That's not vertigo. No, I won't call it vertigo. No, no. Well, it seems that we do not have
clear translations then. Let me just explain exclusively in English. Dizziness in English,
dizziness is in your head. It's like you feel like you're going to maybe fall over. Dizziness
usually comes from rotation. Okay, so that's mareado. But in your head and rotation, however,
nausea, we have now tango now, do you know what I'm saying? But that is like that is in your stomach
when you feel like, oh, you're going to vomit because you've been on a boat. You've been on your
friends lobster boat. Yeah, in my case, I did that. Yeah, because I come from a coastal community,
and one of my friends has a lobster boat, and we went way out into the ocean. And I got seasick.
It's one of the worst feelings you can ever have. Yeah, I can't imagine. So see,
so we call it like being nauseous. But then you have, if it's on the water, seasick, if it's in a
car, car sick, if it's on an airplane, air, I suppose air sick, I guess. Okay, but this was
ganas de vomitar. Yeah, yeah, not a masquiso. Well, it's nauseous. We can say nausea. Yeah, yeah.
But mareado is in the head in the head. Yeah, and you feel dizzy. Okay, as you said. Okay,
interesting, interesting. I think I've been using that wrong for years then. And because you are
DC. Yeah, maybe you can have ganas de vomitar. Also, but you may or may not. You may or may not.
Okay. Okay. Interesting. Good to know. Okay. So this poor guy, right, he, he went to South America.
And then they had to, he got seasick. So they had to leave him in Trinidad. He had been seasick
for 72 straight hours. So they said, stay down there and Trinidad enjoy the nice weather, friendly
people. If you need, you can go over to Tobago, which is maybe more, more rich, I think. Yeah, one of
my best friends, David, worked on a ferry from Trinidad to Tobago. Did he ever tell you about him?
My friend Greg, he's the, he was the ferry captain. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And he worked.
And he ended up getting a Trinidadi and wife out of it out of it. They say,
I saw Alfinale. Yeah, he, um, so he, he was on a ferry from and they used to go back and forth
between the state of Maine and Nova Scotia, my home province. And then in the off season,
the non tourist season, his own, the company said, okay, you're going to take the boat and go down
to Trinidad and go back and forth Trinidad and Tobago on that route every day. So he did that for
a few years. And he enjoyed it. He's an, he's an interesting guy. I am looking, I will someday have
him on the show. Because he was a, he's one of my, one of my best friends. And he's also the guy
who got me into radio. So we'll do a very special show someday. And we'll do, we'll talk about Trinidad,
we'll talk about fairies and we'll talk about radio. It'll be a great show. Anyway, guys, that was
our paragraph. I'm just going to read it one more time and then we're going to move on. Okay,
once when I was about your age, I had the chance to work one summer on a merchant marine ship
going to South America. My parents had said it was okay. And my parents said it was okay. And I
joined the crew, right? After about three days, though, they had to leave me in Trinidad. I had
been terribly seasick for 72 straight hours. Oh my gosh. Que logura, right? Seasickness is one of
the worst feelings because especially if you're way out in the ocean, you can't stop. If you're in a
car, at least you can stop the car, get out and sit. But if you're on a, if you're on the ocean,
you know, three hours away from Trinidad. I'm sorry, but it's a rough time. You need to take some
medication and try to keep it. But then you vomit it up again. It doesn't work. Trust me,
I've tried it. People, it doesn't work. No funcuna. All right. Let's go ahead with today's
vocabulary.
All right, folks. It is time for some vocabulary. David is with me and we're going to do the fastest.
We're going to do a fast vocabulary section. Are you ready, David? I hope it's easy.
Today, we've got cleaning supplies. We could say a scouring pad scouring pad scouring scouring scouring
sco-u-e-r sco-u-r. I should say scouring scouring. Okay, I don't know really. I don't
travel. Cloth. Cloth. Cloth. Yes. Ah, yeah. I think I've heard it. Yeah.
It's a pill. Yes.
David, I'm in the brush. No, so I can't deliver. Uno, macho. Yeah, well. Yeah. It will be
brush. I think brush. Yeah, brush, brush, brush. Espanja. Como Bob. Spongebob.
Uh-huh. That's easy. Estro pajo. Again. Estro pajo hecho de acero, eh?
Como Lana. We say like Lana de acero. So we'll still are still wall. Still wall.
Uh-huh. Recojador.
I don't know that. We could say dust pen. Pen is like sartén. Como sartén de polvo.
It's pen. Dust pen. Let's see. Fregona.
Yeah. Was invented by Spanish. It was, but what's it called in English?
Um, it's a, well, no, it's a fact. A word in English. That's a spaniola.
I don't know, but mop. I got a mop mop mop. Escova.
Wow. I don't know. Brume. Abrume. Yeah. Brume. Yeah. So you get trapo. Okay.
That was scoring. But, well, that was Estro pajo. So scouring pad. Sorry.
Cloth. And trapo cloth. Scouring pad. Cloth. Yeah. Cepillo.
Brush. Esponja. Esponja. Uh, um, um, Fregona.
Fregona. The map. Escova. Brume. Very good.
Bonus points. Aspiradora.
I can't remember. No vacuum cleaner. A vacuum cleaner.
Yeah. Yeah. Vacuum cleaner. Because that's what it is. It vacuums it all up. Yeah.
All right, David. Thank you. Thank you for your time. Thank you for your time.
We've got to check in with, uh, Twitter folks. We got people writing in.
A lot of people writing in with the Twitter translation. And we had, uh, let me see what people
said here on Twitter. For the Twitter translation. Um,
Esos zapatos están algo gastados. Esos están algo, right?
Algo gastados. They are a little worn out. Now,
born tournaments is these shoes are worn out. Yeah, but they are, it would
era un poco algo gastados. They were, they're a little worn out.
These shoes are a bit worn out. Says Anna. Yes, they're a little worn out or they're a bit worn out.
