Today on the LA Report, a beloved restaurant in Malibu that survived the
0:37
Palisade's fire is finally reopening, where you can watch the Oscars in LA this weekend.
0:44
And for Food Friday, how donuts became an each tradition here in SoCal.
0:49
It's Friday, March 13. I'm Nere the Moreno and you're listening to the LA Reports
0:54
After Newed Edition from LAS News.
1:01
The beloved restaurant Duke's Malibu reopens today for the first time in 14 months.
1:07
It survived the Palisade's fire, but subsequent mudslides sent four feet of debris into the
1:12
building, forcing it to close. The deck has now been replaced so that diners can once again
1:17
look out into the ocean. We recently spoke with General Manager Jimmy Chavez. He says bouncing
1:22
back will depend on when PCH can fully reopen. Estimates are that it's going to be years before
1:28
PCH construction is done and that commute looks normal for people and that's such a huge
1:34
impact on our business and all Malibu business. That's probably the main concern as we move
1:39
forward. I'm not to mention just, you know, our neighborhood and where it feels like a neighborhood
1:44
again. The restaurant will be open through Sunday from noon to 8 pm.
1:52
It's Oscars weekend and here's a few watch parties happening in LA. The sports bar 33 taps will
1:58
be showing Oscars live on Sunday at all four of their locations starting at 3.30 pm.
2:03
The Greyhound in Highland Park will have an Oscar ballot contest with a $5 buy-in for a chance
2:08
to win a cash prize. That starts at 4 pm and Dusty vinyl is hosting a Brazilian watch party at
2:15
3 pm in honor of the film The Secret Agent which received four nominations. You can find more
2:21
details on our website, LAS.com. Coming up, why so-called Muslim celebrate Eid with donuts? Stick
2:28

3:24

3:31
Moreno. It's food Friday when we talk all things food and drink going into the weekend.
3:36
Next week, Muslims will mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan with the Ethel Feather Festival.
3:42
LAS reporter Yusra Farzon joins us now to talk about a must-have dessert on Eid Morning. Hey Yusra.
3:48
Hey, Neri, though. So tell me about Eid. How are people celebrating?
3:53
Yeah. So as soon as the last fast finishers, Eid actually brings that night. You know,
3:59
Muslims follow the lunar calendar instead of like how Jewish people also follow up day starts at
4:06
night. So soon as that first fast is done, you know, people will gather for celebrations. It's
4:11
usually called Chandra. Where we come together, Chandra means the night of the moon because you've
4:15
spotted them new moon for the new month. And you'll put Henna, you know, you'll sing, you'll dance,
4:21
and people sort of celebrate together. And then the next morning, it's the first breakfast,
4:27
after fasting for 30 days. Before they can eat, though, they go for prayers, and these prayers
4:32
are typically held at parks and convention centers. They're dressed in their finest clothes,
4:37
and then it's breakfast time. So what do people eat at this breakfast?
4:41
Well, it's a very, I'm sure, you know, all the listeners, you know, are familiar with this,
4:46
the crispy cream glazed doughnut. What? That is the breakfast of Chandra.
4:51
Hmm. Okay. When did this become a tradition? And why doughnut specifically?
4:57
Yeah. So I asked around, I asked a bunch of community and mosque leaders about what is it
5:02
about doughnut? Like when did this start? Nobody has a clear answer. Some people tell me that the
5:06
Islamic Center of Southern California was doing this in the 80s. Others tell me that it started
5:12
20 years ago. So it's been around for a while. I spoke to one mosque, which is the Islamic
5:17
Society of Orange County, which is sort of known as the Mother Mosque of Southern California.
5:22
They do about 3,000 doughnuts on eat morning. They said, you know,
5:26
Muslims in Southern California are very diverse. You've immigrants from South Asia, South East Asia,
5:32
Africa, and then the Arab world. And then also, you know, Black Muslims who've been here for
5:37
a really long time. And so doughnuts are sort of like this uniting food. So it's like a way for
5:43
them to eat something sweet, but also celebrate the American identity. So you have your other
5:49
identities and then the American identity. So it's a great food to unite people across culture.
5:54
There you go. That's Elias reporter Yusra Farazan. You can read her story about how doughnuts
5:59
became an eat tradition on our website, LAS.com. Yusra, thank you so much. Thanks, Naretha.
