On today's show, the Cavs early Eastern Conference opponent preview series continues with today's episode talking about the Toronto Raptors. That's right. Sean Woodley is here. We talk about Kauai Leonard, who still not a member of the Raptors. As of this recording, or when Sean and I recorded last month, we talk about Scotty Barnes, a playoff series that was between the Cavs and Raptors and so much more on this edition of Lockdown Cavs. You are Lockdown Cavs, your daily Cleveland Cavaliers podcast. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Hi again, everybody. My name is Danny Cunningham and I cover the Cleveland Cavaliers over at my sub-stack, the Inside Shot. You're listening to the latest edition of Lockdown Cavs. We're on today's show. We are joined by Sean Woodley of Lockdown Raptors. We're talking everything to Ronald. With the summer that they've had where they aren't supposed to at some point, trade for Kauai Leonard that deal is still not yet been made official. It is 10.39 in the evening on Tuesday, September 8th.
Kauai Leonard is still technically a member of the LA Clippers after that whole aspiration thing. Still continues to, I guess not be stored out because the NBA has handed down its punishment. But I would have thought by now that move would have been made official. We talk about that. We talk about Scotty Barnes. We talk about where the weaknesses the Raptors have and kind of like have the Toronto Raptors who did lose to the Cavs in the postseason this past year. Did they pass the Cavs by this summer? We'll talk about that. I do want to preface by saying this episode, Sean and I, we talked back in August. Now some things have changed with the Cavs since then, which is the other reason why this episode has been so delayed because there has been stuff going on. We recorded this actually the day that the Cavs acquired Peyton Watson just for some time frame reference there. But it's still a lot of the stuff still rings true. I think it's an episode that you're going to enjoy and it's about a team that I do think the Cavs are going to have to deal with again this postseason when things do arrive. So before I get started here with Sean, do me a favor. If you're watching on YouTube, hit the thumbs up button, click that notification bell
and subscribe wherever you might be listening to the show. Now here's my conversation with Sean Woodley. And back now is Sean Woodley. We're talking for the first time since the month of April when the Cavs and Raptors played a seven game series that was wildly entertaining. Had some incredible moments, had some very frustrating moments if you're a cast fan. And also probably some very frustrating moments if you're a Raptors fan too. But now these two teams have turned the page and they've gone about their summers or at least kind of because Sean, the Cavs and the Raptors, I think are in similar situations in very, very different ways in that they are kind of the story of the summer. Kind of has been just sitting in a holding pattern. So that said, how would you describe what the summers been like for the Raptors? Weird. Not like anything I've covered before. It's nice to have the Kawaii thing to talk about every day, but it's also not so nice that it's the only thing I have to talk about every day. It just as we kind of wait for the sort of picture crystallize here. I'm operating out of the assumption that Kawaii is going to be a Raptor at some point.
I think it's become pretty clear that NBA is not terribly interested in exacting the death penalty upon the Clippers or Kawaii. Maybe his agents probably his agents, but we're just kind of waiting for all of the processes to finish up now. And I think Kawaii will be a Raptor. But yeah, it's been a bizarre one, man. It's been the incredible excitement of the deal getting reported on June 30th and the sort of 10 days of just imagining, oh wow, Kawaii plus Scotty. What does this mean for RJ in a different role? What does this mean for how this team's all going to take shape? Holy crap, Calamari, Boyle's plus Scotty plus Kawaii. Those three guys playing together, that's the stuff of, you know, Kavis fans nightmare is probably in the future. Like it's all very exciting. And then, you know, we get put on hold. We have notifications set for publicatory podcast episodes. And it's just kind of been the same cycle for the last like 41 days now is that at the time of recording. And I'm ready for it to all be finalized and through. And I think I've kind of also gone past the point of caring about salary cat map malfeasants.
Just like whatever man, open it up. This is everyone do crimes against the cap. Maybe that's the way to do it going forward anyway. Maybe Steve bomber was on to something. So yeah, it's been a strange unprecedented summer. That is for sure. 41 days, but I'm guessing you're not really keeping track of how long this is. No, no, no, I certainly haven't like scrolled it on my wall. Like I'm in the cave on cast away, not at all. But 41 days ago is when statements were put out, I believe, by the raptors, by the clippers, maybe by the NBA as well, saying that this trade is basically on pause. It's not something as if oh, you know, why physical came back bad or the clippers are trying to shake out their appers for more. It's the raptors were not in a position where they wanted to accept if something was to happen to a team that the punishment would have been on them, which is the most understandable thing ever. But when that happened, let's go back to what that day was like, like what was your reaction was like, oh, this trade's actually on pause. And I think why is still going to be a raptor, but at that point, I don't think it felt
like a sure thing anymore. Yeah, I kind of oscillated, right? Like as stuff comes out and reporting happens and then the dust settles around that reporting, you kind of realize, oh, okay, nothing actually kind of tangibly changed about the situation based on this latest round of reporting. I think what it first happened, I was still again, of the mind that it's going to happen as I am today. I think I also understand it from the raptors end of things. It's strange because like two days prior to the pausing of the trade, Kauai was literally in Toronto at Kyle Lowry's retirement ceremony. Like it's like, all right, they're already parading him around. It's like all done, deal, everything's happening and then all of a sudden hold on. We're not going to do this just yet. But I think it's just like proper risk management for a team that could afford in the summer to take their time and kind of wait for any penalties to be handed out. You know, it's kind of like if you were told in the morning, there's a 1% chance that you're going to get killed by a bus if you walk out your front door today. You might just stay in that day and you know, had yourself, you know, order in some take-out
and not leave the house that day, even if it is just a 1% chance why take the risk. And I kind of think that's what's gone on here with the raptors with the Kauai thing, where all of the messaging around the team, people who cover the team closely, it's all been, yeah, we're still confident this is happening. It's just, you know, in that rare, you know, sort of outcome here where Kauai gets his deal voided entirely and makes it so, you know, the raptors may not be able to retain him and have it given up all these assets for a guy who's had their contract voided from the team. Like it just makes sense if you think you can get it all done before the season starts, which clearly they do to hold off until everything's final and we know exactly the level of punishment if there is any at all handed out to Balmer, Kauai, et cetera, et cetera. So understand the risk aversion. I, you know, at this point, you know, I've just, I've kind of settled into a flow state of waiting and it's all right. But yeah, I think there is sort of corner of the fan base that with every day that passes
that sort of little itch in the back of their brain of like, I mean, you should just like not do this because time is getting thin and I'm nervous about uncertainty. I think there's that sort of sort of part of the fan base that's getting a little bit more antsy as the days go. The days go on here. So let's actually talk about Kauai and not the off the off the off the off the trees that maybe you've been planting or the scoreboards that you've been buying from Dectronics. Let's actually talk about Kauai, the basketball player because I think he's a really good fit in Toronto. But I'm also curious because like you've been through this before, right? Go back to the summer of 2019, the Raptors were I think in a bit of a different place than them. Then they are now and in kind of it's like, Hey, if you're not going to do this now, you're probably never going to do it where the Raptors now feel like they're going to like they're at the start of something as opposed to the end of something. But they acquired a 27 year old Kauai and this is a 35 year old Kauai, which I think is a little bit different. What do you think is different about Kauai Leonard this time around versus the first time in Toronto? I mean, he's a hell of a lot better three point shooter. I don't know.
Like I think, you know, he's not the same defender he once was certainly in the health questions. I mean, there were health questions when the Raptors acquired him in 2018-19. Let's not forget. The games that season, they load managed him, kind of made loaded management cool and set us on the path to, you know, Adam Silver trying to stop load management from happening. You know, it was also like you said, a very different state for that team where they were kind of at the end of the line they had, you know, been just bludgeoned by LeBron three years in a row and it kind of felt like, well, what else are we going to do but make this big swing for this big risk star player? They were not like beholden to making a similar move necessarily going into the summer. I think most people thought they'd be pretty quiet coming into the summer but I do think we saw last year a few things, right? One, Scotty Barnes proved he's that dude and I think if he doesn't have the playoff series he has against the calves, they probably don't go and make this trade. I think he kind of justified this kind of move with what he did to Cleveland in the first round. And then we saw Brandon Ingram just has very real limitations and did not fully adapt
his game. You know, there was some adaptation. I don't want to say he did nothing. He wasn't just the same old Brandon Ingram but there was a lot of the same old Brandon Ingram in there that made it pretty clear like if the rappers are going to really kind of tap into a higher ceiling here, Brandon Ingram is probably not going to be on the team. He is like the kind of guy who raises your floor but lowers your ceiling and they needed that floor raising last year for sure. He helped them become competent but I think it was made pretty clear in the post season and even in some of the more trying times watching him in the regular season where the rappers really struggled for example in crunch time on offense where I just became what I called the Brandon do something offense which was just kind of boring and uninspired and not terribly effective became clear like this is the avenue by which they can most improve if they can turn Brandon Ingram into oh I don't know a Kawaii Leonard type. I'm not expecting Kawaii to be peak 2018-19 finals run Kawaii where he was basically like big Michael Jordan.
I don't think that's going to happen but he's coming off a really excellent season. He was a second team on NBA guy. I had a case for first team and played 65 games like he's played more than 65 in two of the last three seasons. I think you have to feel all right and I also think he's coming into a team where he doesn't have to be everything right. I think they can afford to take their time with him and if he needs to rest certain nights we saw the basically just going to have the same rotation that took the caps to seven last year on the floor assuming health in the games where Kawaii doesn't play with some hopefully incremental growth from guys like Caldmari Boyles and Jamal Shed and Jacobi Walter and Alan Graves in the mix next to you know and so I think they can sustain and not have Kawaii need to be out there for 38 minutes of game carrying the day on offense every single night they have enough roster depth to get by and you know he just kind of gives him that ceiling right and I think if you can get him to the playoffs healthy which is a big if of course it's the risk that hangs over this entire trade but if you can get him there I think this team is set up to be pretty damn scary and you alluded to the fit
I think it's like a hand in glove perfect fit particularly between Kawaii and Scotty and they're not a team I'd be relishing playing you know in the sort of matchup gauntlet that is the playoffs because I think they're going to have posed a lot of problems for a lot of teams just by the sheer volume of guys that size who are that good and physical and athletic and you mix in the three point shooting of Kawaii the pull up shooting I mean Danny last season the Raptors averaged five pull up threes as a team per game Kawaii averaged four and a half on his own he's going to revolutionize the way this team shoots threes which has been long long needed in these parts as well so yeah you know all the risk understood I think it's still just no brain or hold run of a trade for the Raptors assuming it gets over the finish line at some point here the problem of finding clothes that you can live it all day be comfortable and do whatever you need to do whether it's just chilling go into meetings playing golf being on the move that problem has been solved by Kozy earth the everyday polo
is the answer it's lightweight built to move with you just easy to wherever I've got it on right now and it's fabulous plus the Kozy earth essential socks they're exactly what the name suggests soft supportive comfortable enough that you stop thinking about them halfway through the day plus Kozy earth backs everything with a 10 year warranty and hassle free returns so if something isn't quite right you're covered that makes trying them for yourself an easy decision I've got the Kozy earth everyday polo in blue and in black check them out at kozy earth dot com use the code locked on for 20% off that's right locked on for an exclusive 20% off and if you see a post purchase survey please mention you heard about it right here Kozy earth dot com how do you think that that playoff series that has been mentioned a few times already could it will change who Scotty Barnes is because that was you know I thought he
struggled in the first couple of games and it was numbers looked okay and I thought some of that was like step adding after the caps are big and in the fourth quarters there but games three through six he was awesome I think games have any kind of ran out of gas a little bit and I do wonder if he was dealing with some sort of lower body injury as well I'm like the first half of that game yeah you and he looked like he was going to go win the damn thing himself in the first half of game seven right right and how do you think that that experience will change him moving forward not just for you know next spring when the raptors are back in the postseason but the regular season as well yeah I mean I think we'll see that change kind of translated most often in the games were koyes out right like I think we'll see him just kind of become the guy through which everything runs when there's no koay on the floor and I think you feel more confident he can do that based what we saw in the playoffs I don't think we would have been able to go into this season with that having to be the Scotty we see all season long and think that's sustainable right he carried such a huge burden on both ends of the floor in that cab series that it just yes he was impressive he was
efficient he was 24 6 and 8 whatever it was it was awesome but asking him to do that over the course of 82 I think was just going to be a recipe for burnout but I think we've seen now that there's that gear he can get to right whether it's in games or koyes out they need to lecture juice from him whether it's in the playoffs and you just kind of ratchet up to play off Scotty mode I think knowing you have that version of Scotty Barnes in your back pocket to go to is kind of an incredible thing and for it not to have to be the whole way by which he's deployed this coming season because you have koay I think that's also a huge bonus like I know there's there's a lot of members of the Raptors fan base who still insists Scotty Barnes as a point guard Scotty's magic Johnson and that's just not who he is Scotty's just good at a whole bunch of stuff he's really good at basically everything and putting him in all kinds of different positions allows him to imprint himself on games in all kinds of ways and I think having someone the level of koay to carry some of the offense to be a spacing agent around Scotty when he has the ball in his hands I think it's just all going
to make that much more easy for him to do the things that he does so well and you know without having to burden him with that much over the course of 82 which again I just think was not going to be a sustainable recipe is there a player on this roster that you look at and say you know I'm higher on this guy than maybe the consensus says probably a manual quickly people who listen to my show you will know this is a very much non-brand thing I've been a quickly head from day one and I think he you know it's a shame he got hurt at the end of last season because he was super durable throughout the year but he continues to get branded with this can't stay healthy label because he picked up a foot injury at like the absolute wrong time of the year miss the playoff series I think if they had him there's a very real chance they win that series just because of how much juicy gives to their offense the extra shooting he provides the extra ball handling he offers and I think he's going to be in a really good position to succeed on this team because yes there will but still be times where he has to run point bring the ball up run pick and roll and that type of stuff and he's usually very good at picking roll stuff like his numbers tend to grade out extremely
well in synergy and things like that as a pick and roll ball handler you know with you know including his passes without possessions where he's passing and he's just shooting that's all been very good but it's not like a thing you can build his entire game around right and well you can really I think lean on as a strength for him is relocation off ball shooting right he's just a really really excellent deadly three point shooter away from the ball and I think playing an orbit around Scotty Barnes and co-wild entered and even RJ bear who I think is going to have a really big season two playing and I think his ideal roles like the third play finishing option I think quickly he's just going to get loose for all kinds of looks and is going to provide like a dynamism and a stretch to the offense that just makes it really really hard to guard most nights and I think on on defense he made some strides last season two right he's not the greatest on ball defender in the world but he's a damn good team defender really good at with the flexions you know forcing turnovers getting things moving the other direction and I think there's also some room for him as well Danny to kind of come back to his career averages in a couple of areas it mostly three point shooting wise there's two
areas that I think last year he was pretty miserable with that I just think odd suggest he's going to improve at this year one is pull up three point shooting he shot like 27% on pull up three's last season that's not good enough for your lead guard he's done better than that in the past he's not like the quickest most fluid pull up guy he's not Steph Curry getting that thing off really quick coming around to screen but he can do it a lot more effectively than he did last year and then transition threes Danny Emmanuel quickly attempted more transition threes in any player in the NBA and shot miserably on them if he shoots just normal percentages on transition threes that's going to be a huge boom in his numbers as well I think he's a good player I think you know the the loss season he had in his first full year on his big contract really kind of just like soured the conversation around him kind of irreparably and fair enough I guess but last season he was quietly quite good and help the Raptors win minutes help Raptors lineups makes sense and I think this season in like a third fourth option role in this team he's going to be a really important figure and I think he's going to have
probably his most successful season to date whether it's you know the most points or whatever probably not but I think just in terms of like helping driving winning minutes and you know providing three points shooting that they badly need I think he's going to be in an awesome position to succeed this season where do you think the weakness on this Raptors roster is right now presuming the quiet stuff goes through because I know technically he's not on the roster but presuming he is you look at the center position I think right like yaka perdle is a big question mark like he was bad the players nice bad for most of last year largely because his back just gave out on him and he couldn't move the way he's used to moving and he's typically a pretty fleet of foot big man just was not at all in his repertoire last year his defense fell off a cliff offensively was still helpful and you know had like his career best efficiency season and things like that never misses around the rim he's a really you know he feasts playing off of Scotty Barnes and hear your passing things like that but yeah like after him it gets a little bit dubious right because
you're asking call and Marie boils to play a lot of center and now look calves fans know that can be really effective call and Marie boils rocks and I think they'll be comfortable playing him at the five a lot this season and I think he's probably gonna close most games at the five for this team and they're just gonna roll small and just decide okay we're the best small ball team in basketball try to beat us you probably can't and I think that's gonna be a pretty winning strategy but you know if pertinent goes down and misses half the games like I did last year and you're asking call and Marie boils to like be a five all the time starting closing all of that that could be a little bit too much to ask of a guy and you know it just becomes so much easier a pertinent can play 65 70 games and play 25 minutes a night to kind of fill in the minutes and not overburden anybody and not have to lean fully on okay CMB I guess you're a full time five like that that would I think be a big ask as much as I think he's as equipped to do it as any smaller guy in the NBA with his strength um but yeah Pearl man like you know he's gonna be the guy the people look at trying
to find an upgrade for it's gonna take a lot the rapper's gonna attach a lot of stuff to get off of him to turn him into someone else I would think but if he comes out and plays well maybe that becomes less difficult if he's like a guy who can be like a four-setter like he's been in the past where he's just on the floor and kind of gives a baseline level of competence maybe there's a team out there in this sort of new world where tankings not really favorable and who's just looking for a center to eat some minutes and kind of be the backbone of a rebuild for a few years like maybe there's a way to get off of him but right now I don't think there's any team that's touching that contract with that a whole bunch of other incentive um so we'll see but yeah Pearl he's the least spot and I also don't think he's like done and cooked as a player and there's a lot of rappers fans who do and just kind of assume he's dead that seems premature he's only 30 yes backstep is scary but it's not like the end of the world um and so I'm a little bullish on him kind of finding some return to form he's never going to be worth the money he's getting paid and that contract is an albatross but uh he can still be an effective helpful player even if it's not matching up to his salary and I think that's what we'll probably see from him this year but that
certainly is the place you'd most like to see the rappers upgrade if they can at some point more versionant just a second but first today's show is brought to you by Odu running a business it shouldn't feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems that we're never really designed to work together you've got one effort calming another effort inventory a different half for sales and somehow none of those apps really find a way to talk to each other it doesn't sound right that doesn't sound like it works well that's where Odu comes in Odu is in all in one business management software that brings every part of your business together one powerful platform sales accounting inventory marketing all those things that you need they work together in one place it's one platform to manage grow and scale your business the best organizations they know success it's not just about talent success is about having everyone that's working towards the same goal that's true in business and it's true in sports too think about how some organizations they they don't have alignment between their ownership and their front office and their coaching staff and their roster and when that's the case it's really hard for those teams to be successful you
don't often see those teams hoisting at trophy at the end of the season because truthfully speaking they're not very good great organizations they win because operations matter and that's exactly why you should get Odu Odu is one platform to manage grow and scale your business tried for free today at od.com slash lock down that's Odu O-D-O-O.com slash lock down L-O-C-K-E-D-O-N one more time that is Odu.com slash lock down you brought up Colin Murray boils and I think he's an awesome young player I thought he had a really nice playoff series against the calves last year you brought up playing him at center a little bit more which that can be a very demanding thing over an 82 game season is I know you know what are fair expectations for him in year number two. I'm the wrong person to ask because I think I'm as bullish on Colin Murray boils this season as anybody I think he's going to be like a top three finisher for six band of the year like my expectations are pretty high he's that good defensively he's a monster we know this and scoring wise I mean you saw in the playoffs
it was like 15-a-gamey average and like they don't draw stuff up for him they don't really like design things for Colin Murray boils he's just always in the right place and just finds points because of that and I think this season we'll see him layered a little bit more into the offense whether it's with second units kind of getting a chance to create a little bit work it is an elbow hub stuff like that work more as like a screen and dive guy which he just kind of like learned to do in the last month or so of the season after not being very good at it to start he became just like a killer screen and dive guy lob finisher all of that as the playoffs came around and so yeah like I think he's going to be like a super sub off the bench I think he's going to play more minutes than y'all can perdal per night and he's going to close most games and I think he's going to be pretty damn good doing it he's kind of a sponge he's someone who I think you were there I think when Darko was talking about this he started to hit like a couple of mid-rangeers in that playoff series and Darko was like yeah we just kind of like asked him to start doing that like two weeks ago and he's just doing it now so okay cool like I only they're putting limits on this guy I'm certainly not putting limits on this guy I'm not putting limits on my own expectations for this guy and maybe
I'm over my skis and I typically tend to be like a hold off young guys are usually going to take some time and there's regression and things aren't linear but he was so good as a rookie like outlier good as a rookie that I kind of feel alright being bullish on year two column Marie Poise I think he's going to be awesome all right last thing and this is the question that I've been asking to everybody as part of this series and you can kind of take it in any direction that you want to take it but what would you consider to be a success for the 2026 2027 Toronto Raptors yeah I mean I think it's tough because you'd like to see them take a step forward and like the East standings right like I think it's a fair expectation that they should floor it with 50 plus wins I think they will I think like 52 and 30 is kind of where I'm at right now because I just think it's going to be hard to really run away with like 60 wins in the conference for any team I think it's just going to be the top eight or nine teams are all kind of around the 45 to 50 range but I think the Raptors are like better than the lower tier of those teams I think they're better
than the calves frankly if I want to you know take a shot at you guys like I think I was mean I mean we saw them nearly beat the calves without Kauai Leonard and now they have Kauai Leonard I think I feel pretty good about their chances and I like that matchup quite a bit um especially since there's even fewer wing defenders on this calves team than there was last year apparently Didine Wade didn't know he was so important but uh you know not to stunt on the calves here but um I'm also fine as stunt on the calves anytime but the I think you know it's tough It's so dependent on Kauai's health right and so if Kauai's hurt is that a failure is that We'll chalk it up too okay we got a couple more years of this window I think I think I can get to the next three years be deep playoff runs I think that's success with the Kauai trade and it kind of justifies it So we're not going to know sort of how successful this era is for a few years now I think but Yeah, you don't want to you know there's only so many ticks at the can you have you want to optimize it I think if they can make the second round certainly and kind of give a spirited effort
That's probably like the baseline for success anything beyond that awesome, but um yeah I think it's a tough question to answer because So much of it is tied up in the health of a guy whose health is a constant question mark and so I think we'll have to just kind of see Based on the context of how it is they end up wherever they end up How do they get there? I think we'll kind of tell the story of whether it was successful or not if that makes sense It's a cop-out answer, but you know, it's a tough one with uh with the sort of how much they've put into Kauai and the guy whose you know health is very much up for debate They will be I think a very interesting team to watch throughout the season in the eastern conference and I I agree with you that the The east is I don't know that there are a ton of teams that I look at and say you can win the title this year Like I'd be sure I'd be really surprised if either of our teams won the title this year But I think there are like eight teams that I can say I could see winning 50 games and I think the Raptors are certainly part of that group So it'll be an interesting season to watch it'll be an interesting postseason to watch when we finally get there so many months from now
And maybe Kauai Leonard at some point will actually get traded to the Tron Raptors and all this will kind of We'll have to wait and see But you are Sean with Lee you covered the Raptors over at lockdown Raptors to corner lorne learn more about the dinosaurs from the north Sean is your guy. Thank you so much for doing this Sean Of course, buddy anytime A big thanks to Sean Woodley for stopping by really hope you enjoyed the conversation the Tron Raptors I think are going to be a very good team We'll see when the Kauai Leonard stuff gets finalized I think it's on the verge of getting really really awkward if it hasn't already but like I said earlier That was a conversation taped in August and I hope that you did learn more about what the Raptors are at this point They are a team I think is very good and one that could be a thorn in the side for the calves I'm not so sure that they've passed the calves by I think that after the calves acquired Peyton Watson I would pick Cleveland and win a postseason series again I do have some doubts about some weaknesses the Raptors might have But I think we are all better for learning a little bit more about Tron I've got a few more of these left on tomorrow show. We are going to be Taking a look at the Washington Wizard's who are a team that maybe you would have expected to have an early season preview of
